  9. Sticky: Game Thread DISCLAIMER ALERT The beauty of the Mafia...

    DISCLAIMER ALERT
The beauty of the Mafia Championship is that it brings communities closer together, and it provides an opportunity for players to learn new playstyles, metas and mechanics. And hopefully make new friends as well.

All that being said, the games can also very quickly become overwhelming and frustrating since you probably won't be able to play completely in the same way that you're used to. You don't necessarily need to adapt, but you will probably need to accept that some of the other players will have a different approach to the game than you.

We hope that you will embrace this as part of the experience. It's easy to grow frustrated with people when you don't know them (imagine how you would have felt playing with your friends on your home site if you didn't know any of them when you played your first game together), so a huge part of playing in the Championship is also getting to know the other players in some way.

Specifically, the seasons have taught us that you should be prepared for:
    • A very high level of activity. On average, there will be 600-700 posts per 24 hours during the early stages of the game in qualifier games, and likely more in semifinal/finale games. This is a melting pot of dedicated and enthusiastic players all gathered in one game.
    • You will likely face very different posting styles: Some will post walls of texts with many quotes, some will post a ton of one-liners, and some people will be very keen to interact in real-time in the thread (using the thread as a chat rather than a thread you pop into a few times a day).
    • A flurry of activity towards the end of the day. This means that if you check out 5 hours before the day ends, you should not be surprised to return the next day to see that the wagons were changed multiple times. If you want your vote to count, be careful to not agree to a game where you can never be around for EOD.
    • A few players in your game will probably have played with each other before. This has become impossible to prevent as increasingly many players have played on Mafia Universe.
    • We do not condone abusive remarks and we have banned several communities from participating based on this before, but each season features dozens of new communities, so there is always a slight risk that you might encounter abusive players. If you do, please report them and we'll take care of it.

Past seasons have shown that players get more enjoyment out of the games when they make connections with the other players, so we highly encourage you to join our Discord server either before or after the game.

Finally, we encourage you to at least skim some of the season 8 games to get a sense of how the games usually play out: https://www.mafiauniverse.com/forums...mmunity-Events

WHAT THE $%#! DOES "WTF" MEAN?

Are you not familiar with some of the terminology used by the other players? Maybe this will help you: TERMINOLOGY EXPLANATIONS.
    MAFIA GAME RULES
Rules may vary from community to community, so we highly advise you to carefully read these rules.

    • Only post/talk about the game in this thread. Don't PM other players, unless you are mafia and wish to talk with your teammates. Also, don't post anything about the game in other threads or on other forums.
    • Don't try to use the form of your role PM. So a screenshot of your role PM would be cheating.
    • You are not allowed to change your avatar, location or any other profile info during game in any way that could be construed as hinting at your role.
    • This is a game of lying. Players are expected to lie. No statement or promise a player makes within the game has any force outside the game. As an example, a bet offered in a game is not something you can collect if you win.
    • If we believe you to be bending the rules intentionally in a way that clearly goes against the spirit of the rules, game, and/or championship, then that would also be grounds for modkill and potential disqualification.
    • If you have any questions about rules, send a PM to your host. Avoid asking questions to the host in the thread.
    • Don't ever refer to private communications with the Game Host.
    • If you should ever require a replacement, PM Lissa and stop posting in the thread.
    • No hydra'ing / multi-accounting is allowed. Do not share your account with anyone else.
    • You are not allowed to reference the post-game voting during the game. I.e. you cannot post "if you lynch me, you're not getting my vote after the game" or anything like that.
    • Treat your fellow players with respect. Hostility will not be tolerated.

Refer to this post for the complete, standard ruleset for mafia games.

I will repeat this particular rule once more in big letters to make sure you understand:

DO NOT EVER REFERENCE THIS GAME OUTSIDE OF THIS GAME THREAD. YOU SHOULD NOT BE TALKING ABOUT THIS GAME WHATSOEVER ON YOUR HOME SITE. IF PEOPLE ASK YOU QUESTIONS, TELL THEM YOU CAN'T TALK ABOUT THE GAME AND LINK THEM TO THIS THREAD.
    MINIMUM ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS
All players are required to make a minimum of 10 posts per game day.

Activity prods will be conducted based on the phase length of the game as follows:

If a player has made 0 posts by 6 hours into a day, they will be prodded in private.

If a player has made less than 10 posts by 2 hours before EoD, they will be prodded in private. This is in addition to the mid-day prod if the player is a 0-poster.
If a player has made less than 5 posts by 24 hours into a day, they will be prodded in private.

If a player has made less than 10 posts by 2 hours before EoD, they will be prodded in private again.
If a player has made 0 posts by 24 hours into a day, they will be prodded in private.

If a player has made less than 5 posts by 48 hours into a day, they will be prodded in private. This is in addition to the mid-day prod if the player is a 0-poster.

If a player has made less than 10 posts by 6 hours before EoD, they will be prodded in private again. This is in addition to the previous prod(s).

If a player has posted 0 times by EoD on any given day without maj, once night begins they will be subbed out as soon as possible.

If a player makes 1-9 posts during a day without maj, they have the full night to respond to the warning. If they do not respond to the warning in time, they will be subbed out.

If a player makes 1-9 posts a second time on any future day without maj, they will be subbed out.

These rules apply to all players regardless of alignment.

The game hosts and tournament organizers reserve all rights to immediately sub out any player who has not met the minimum requirement, regardless of whether or not the player has met the requirement on previous days. Similarly, if players are only meeting this requirement by spamming and/or posting in the last hour of the day, that and similar circumstances would also be cause for substitution.

    SUBSTITUTION PROCEDURE
If your representative needs to sub out during a QUALIFIER (through request, inactivity, or otherwise), your community's backup will take their place, This is assuming 1) you've elected one, 2) they've registered a user on Mafia Universe, and 3) that I'm able to get a hold of them within a reasonable amount of time (i.e. with enough time left in the current phase for the sub to work with).

If I can't get a hold of your backup, I will give the spot to a representative from a community that joined the series late - or failing that, a backup from one of the larger communities.

If your representative needs to sub out during a SEMIFINAL or FINALE game, your community's backup will NOT take their place. Instead the next person who was in line to receive a semifinal or finale spot will take their place.

    BIO:
Annio of Viterbo (sometimes known as Annius of Viterbo, among other names) was a fifteenth-century Italian humanist scholar. As you might expect, he was from the town of Viterbo. He claimed to be able to read the Etruscan language, which had hitherto gone untranslated, as well as various languages spoken in Asia. He also published works he had purportedly discovered or translated showing that the Etruscans, and the town of Viterbo, were comparatively important in the history of ancient Rome. He also led an archeological dig in Viterbo, in which he unearthed several marble statues, in the style of Roman statues, which he used as further evidence of Viterbo's importance.

His claims were, as point of fact, false. His works were forgeries, he couldn't even read Etruscan, and the statues he 'discovered' had actually been planted shortly before the archeological dig.

This isn't actually relevant to the game except by the tenuous connection that he is a liar and this is a game about lying, but now you know a mildly interesting history fact.

Finally, since I am representing a mafia site formerly hosted on a FIRST robotics forum, here is a picture of one of our robots (yes, it's glowing blue, yes, the glowing has a purpose):

I have played sixty five games on Mangahelpers, won as both mafia and townie. Hosted four games and have had probably two dozen unique roles that I played during those times. Repping Mangahelpers for the third time. We never managed to get past round one so hopefully that changes this year. Mangahelpers forum almost never uses regular vanilla townie roles, nearly everyone has a unique role in our games and games usually revolve around figuring out interactions between roles or using them to influence the game, that's quite different from the setup of this mafia championship game, will certainly have to adapt my playstyle.

I'm Ultimate-Gamer. Most people call me UG. I come from starmen.net.

Wow... I'm sitting here trying to type this and I'm coming up with absolutely nothing.

I love all roles but I prefer playing as mafia, love the sense of comradery that comes with it.

For a while I played pretty agro but have since been trying to be a more laid back player.

I tend to favor gut or soul reads over analytical reads. Mostly because I'm not very good at being the analytical type and prefer to base my arguments around player psychology.

I have a bad habit of writing lengthy wall posts that I'm trying to get away from and keep my arguments and reads short and concise but I have so far failed in that regard.

Looking forward to representing starmen.net in these championship games!

Also, please send myself or @Lissa a bio if you have not already, preferably by MU PM. If you have already sent one you don't need to worry about this. We'll need your bio by the time the game rands at 9pm EDT on Sunday June 12th!

  15. Completed DISCLAIMER ALERT The beauty of the Mafia...

    BIO:
One thing in any case is certain: mafia is neither the oldest nor the most constant problem that has been posed for human knowledge. Taking a relatively short chronological sample within a restricted geographical area—forum culture since the sixteenth century—one can be certain that mafia is a recent invention within it. . . . In fact, among all the mutations that have affected the knowledge of things and their order, the . . . only one, that which began a century and a half ago and is now perhaps drawing to a close, has made it possible for the game of mafia to appear. And that appearance . . . was the effect of a change in the fundamental arrangements of knowledge. . . . If those arrangements were to disappear as they appeared . . . one can certainly wager that mafia would be erased.

—Michel Foucault, The Order of Things: An Archaeology of The Social Deduction

The reality in highly inactive communities is grim. Half of Pokemon Showdown's userbase—about 300 million people—live without access to basic forum infrastructure or functional ISOs. In Smogon, where 40 percent of the players idle out before page 35, the staff spends nine times more on offsite invitationals than on their homesite. In 1997, before Flush, PSanon spent more than half its revenue on player substitutions. Until recently, it has taken communities in ORG-adjacent Discord servers six or more years to get subs. For lenders this seems like common sense—making sure the server has its economic house in order before repping out no-posters—but the human cost is tremendous. Six years is a child’s entire elementary school education. If governments are forced to cut subsidies for public education and charge fees that make schooling too expensive for the poor, it cheats a whole generation of players.

—Robert W. Edgar, “Jubilee 2000: Hanging Our Flakes"

In terms of how I read you, much as I hate to do so, I tr you. You're rude, unhelpful, stubborn, annoying, unreasonable, audacious and provocative, but you aren't scum. You state reads with baseless grounds, rather than work on the game you meme, and it's extraordinarily annoying to have to work with your posts which intentionally commit fallacies just to make it difficult to respond to. You call me out for not responding to your posts when you create them in such a way that you can call me out for any response. See the above paragraph for an example. You intentionally quote out of context, and don't think for a moment I'll believe you said 'before this post', then accidentally dug through that whole post to find an example that 'proved' your point. I truly wish I did not have to play with you because of your sheer arrogance. You are not worthy of my time. You are not worthy of anyone in this game's time. You are a hindrance to town because of your toxic and unhelpful playstyle. Somehow, you still flip town, because you have no agenda, because you have no scum interactions, because (I hope) you at least have method in your madness when scum, and here there is only madness. Please, for the love of god, could you give a real reason next time you post, and one that hasn't come from some contrived previous post intended to let you toy with another player.

Thank you so much for this gorgeous award. It's going to look fabulous in my New York apartment. No, I'm just kidding. I'm so nervous. Seriously. Thank you, Billboard, for letting me grow up on the charts with you and for this incredible honor. Icon? I really don't think of myself in that way. I started making music out of a necessity to survive and express myself.

I just wanted to make music so I could feel worthy of existing. If I've learned anything, anything at all in this life, it's that truly anything is possible with God. Even through all the ups and downs in my career...We've all seen them, we all make mistakes.

There's been a few memes. I guess I've always felt like an outsider, someone who doesn't quite belong anywhere. I still feel like that lost interracial child who had a lot of nerve to believe I could succeed at anything in this world. And that is the truth. But I did believe because I had to. The truth is I've dedicated my life to music, my saving grace, and my fans who are unlike any other entity that I've ever known.

I want to thank all the people who've been with me on this journey, through the highs and lows, to the struggles to your struggles and mine. And to anyone who doesn't allow themselves to be broken and keeps getting up and keeps holding on and keeps standing tall and keep on believe, I celebrate you tonight. And to anyone who's ever told me a song I wrote helped save their life, I thank you because you saved mine and I'll be eternally grateful. Thank you.

I’m a carefree player, I tend to just play how I want, not really caring to fit any particular type of meta. I’ve played over 75+ game’s. Honestly I’ve lost track at this point. But yeah I wouldn't say I have any impressive stats, outside of the one time I fooled my own brother by claiming to be a weak doctor. If I had to choose a favorite role it would have to be something that could I hide as if I am mafia. Something like a Mafia Fruit Vendor or Mafia Doctor, Though if I had to choose I would rather just be a mafia goon. My favorite alignment is obviously mafia. Overall I don’t plan to go down easily in these upcoming game(s).

My normal Day 1 approach is slow, I tend to just stay in the background observing everyone's mannerisms. I don’t like putting myself out there day 1 in fear of being night killed, I trust myself being alive more than any other player.

    Strengths:
    Observant
    Aggressive
    Good at Laying Low
    Good at handling pressure

    BIO:
After her mother, Animal Midwife, escaped the vanilla fields of Soviet Russia, she gave birth to supershorty. Communication was limited, leaving more questions than answers, she was raised primarily on Saturday Morning Cartoons. From the Bloodbath of the Emojis to the slog through the lighthouse, her storied career was just beginning. Leading the first expedition to Madagascar, she paid homage to her ancestral vanilla roots. Things got explosive when she tried her hand at Wizardry, but her sly wit and sharp tongue blazed a path through the dawnless horizon. A master of literature, and a must have on any wedding guest list. She bet big in the casino and it paid off. But of course no one could mention shorty without talking about the majesty of her spreadsheets. Now, with the smell of vanilla in the air, the call of her ancestors summons her, like an ISO she can't resist.

Wheaties in the morning - no way. She benchpresses her backup before heading to the lab to cure cancer and save lives. This girl's writing her doctoral dissertation at the same time as her wall posts. Though she be but little, and most commonly found under the couch, she is fierce.

Don't be fooled by how smol,
She'll kick shins in a brawl.

SEASON 9, GAME 7: FATE OF IBERIA (MAFIA CHAMPIONSHIP)

Welcome to Season 9 of the Mafia Championship!

An international forum-based tournament for Mafia players from all over the world

Hosted By: Our automated @Mafia Host w/ @GGhana providing flavor - @Arapocalypse, @Hally, and @Lissa will be overseeing
    Start Date: June 6th, 2022
Start of Day/End of Day: 9PM EDT
    Phase Lengths: 48/24
Elimination Mechanics: Deadline Elimination (person with most votes is eliminated at the end of the deadline). In case of a tie, one of the tied players will randomly be eliminated. Sleep is a valid vote. Starting Day 2, Majority is enabled, meaning the players can end day early if someone attains a majority of the votes.
Night Chat In Thread: No, thread will be locked during Night Phases
Out of Thread Communication: Only the Mafia team may communicate with each other outside of the thread (24/7)
LYLO Rules: Votes are automatically locked in at LYLO. I.e. when the game reaches a point where one more miselimination leads to a loss, you cannot change your vote once you have cast it.
Minimum Posting Requirement: Minimum 10 posts per Game Day
Maximum Posts Allowed: 150 posts per player per Game Day (restriction is lifted 1 hour before EOD though, so if you've reached your max you can post again at that time).
    3x Mafia Goon
    12x Vanilla Townie

    Relevant mechanics info:

    • Day start.
    • Majority elimination is enabled Day 2+, but majority is not required at any point for the elimination.
    • Tied votes will result in a player being eliminated at random from among the tied players.
    • No outside communication. I.e. you may not contact the other players outside of the thread (unless you are Mafia and wish to speak with your teammates).
    • Thread is locked during Night Phases.
    • Votes are automatically locked in at LYLO.
    • Mafia share a factional Night Kill, which is a single standard shot for their faction. The mafia factional kill is mandatory.
    • Mafia may communicate at any time.
    • Each individual player may make a maximum of 150 posts per day phase (this restriction is lifted 1 hour before day end).
    • The game will have 3 organizers overseeing everything and making sure everyone’s following the code of conduct along with a flavour host, but otherwise the game is completely automated (automatic votecounts, thread locks and reveals alignments automatically, the bot receives and processes actions, etc.).

If a player has made less than 10 posts by 2 hours before EoD, they will be prodded in private. This is in addition to the mid-day prod if the player is a 0-poster.

Please note that while the objective handling of subs as delineated above may be mentioned in the thread, it is not allowed to speculate on whether someone will sub out or ask someone if they will sub out, or similar in the game thread! Feel free to pm me if you need clarification!

  29. Completed DISCLAIMER ALERT The beauty of the Mafia...

I have been known in my home community and the community I’m representing to make gambits that have a chance to harm me more than help me. In terms of non-mafia interests, I’m a huge fan of Homestuck, Bloodborne, and FFXIV.

Eyes flit open. It's still dark. The bed-side clock flashes 2:07 AM in glaring red. A dull beam sweeps slowly across the room casting dancing shadows like an errant spotlight. Headlights from a passing car. A late-night drive. Perhaps a graveyard shift change. Perhaps a reveler who stubbornly stayed until the bartender smiled and asked him kindly to make his way home. The rumble rises, falls, and fades to piercing silence.

The air is heavy. Dense. There is a moisture.

Shock! Spine straightens like the metal blade of a tape measure. The sheets are...wet. Deep breath. It's only sweat.

My heart is racing. Something is very wrong. My senses reach out into the night for the faintest hum or vibration. I process only quiet, dark, still.

Why am I overcome by survival instinct? I am in my own bed. The safest place in the world. Right?

I can't feel this with my senses. I feel it in my bones.

Conq is here. He is very close.

I'm a 36 year old management/IT-consultant living in the countryside with three kids, two cats, a dog and my significant other.
I have always loved social deduction games, and games in general, and online mafia has been a source of joy and despair over the last ten years. Joy because I love winning and being right, despair because I hate losing and being wrong.
As a player I love inciting confrontation and chaos followed by stepping back and trying to make sense of the mayhem, favouring high risk plays as long as they give something to analyze.

On my regular game forum we play mostly with wacky rules and explore game design with lots of moving parts, so it will be refreshing getting back to more standard games here!

I usually use conflict and provocation as tools and promise to try to dial that back a bit here, as I understand that the "win at all costs"-style I'm used to isnt favoured here.

Looking forward to playing with you all!

    BIO:
Hello, I am from Something Awful. I have heard about this championship one or two seasons before but only now have I worked up the courage to actually give it a go. While I'm a bit busy with a somewhat unpredictable work schedule, I am what Something Awful calls an "effort player", i.e. someone who pours a lot of time and effort into mafia games. I can be somewhat bullheaded, but be assured, it's all in the spirit of mafia! By no means do I mean to actually cause offense, my playstyle can just be very aggressive if I think I'm onto something. Another thing you should be aware of that I can be terrible at detecting sarcasm/humor.

My favorite role is Vigilante (not that I ever got the role on SA yet...) and I much prefer having a power role over being Vanilla generally. On SA, I usually run role madness (i.e. everyone has a role) games with a bit of a reputation for having crazy and unique roles.

Overall, I'm actually pretty excited to be here and hope to make it far (or at least further than day 2...)
  31. Completed Season 9, Game 6: Champions of Mathematics [Mafia Championship]

SEASON 9, GAME 6: CHAMPIONS OF MATHEMATICS (MAFIA CHAMPIONSHIP)

Welcome to Season 9 of the Mafia Championship!

An international forum-based tournament for Mafia players from all over the world

Hosted By: Our automated @Mafia Host w/ @LanMisa providing flavor - @Arapocalypse, @Hally, and @Lissa will be overseeing
    Start Date: May 30th, 2022
Start of Day/End of Day: 4PM EDT
    Phase Lengths: 36/12

Night's been shortened, SoD will be at 2pm EDT on May 24th!

  42. Completed DISCLAIMER ALERT The beauty of the Mafia...

Instead the next person who was in line to receive a semifinal or finale spot will take their place.

hi!! i'm Datisi, i'm 22, and i live in croatia. i am a second year psychology student, a self-taught artist, and an irreparable mafia addict. some have joked that the only reason i decided to study psychology was to get better at mafia, and i will neither confirm nor deny that.

i've told myself i'm quitting this game many times by now, and i've always found my way back. i still haven't decided playing which alignment gives me less of a headache. i heavily rely on my gut in game. i often make readslists in the form of triangles.

    my feats in mafia include:
    • tunneling a townie for 200+ pages and misvoting him in yelo
    • solving a game on page 4, then mishammering in final 3
    • vigging an innocent child on night 1
    • townlocking a scum i got a hard-guilty result on the previous night
    • as scum, quickhammering a hidden vengeful in final 5, the vengeful killing my partner, and me getting shot by a vig that had one bullet left

oh, i also make memes sometimes:

I'm Joe, I was introduced to forum mafia by eyeball226/SirPrimalform/catte a little after zchinque introduced it to gog in 2010, and I've known about Mafia Universe thanks to yogsloth and observed a few championship games but this will be the first forum mafia I've played outside of gog o_o'
Gog mafia is a bit of an enclave of safety nestled away somewhere in the raging wastelands which gog forums has become. We've got [capital C]ommunity [capital S]pirit; our setups HAVE BEEN KNOWN to turn out to be absolute clusterf#s ((noble experiments)); we regularly struggle to scrape 12 players together; we've got decade-running injokes; and we often forget, to our dismay, that new players don't know what the hell we're talking about. We've also dabbled with Secret Hitler, Court of the Sultan, and Russian Roulette (omg Russian Roulette is ridiculously stupid and fun).

Myself, I like hosting and playing. I enjoy tinkering with new roles and creating high-concept setups which my players will inevitably find confusing and disorienting (whoops). As a player I try to remind myself to embrace the spirit of Reckless Abandon(tm) but I tend to overthink things and trip over my own lojick.

Thanks gog mafia for letting me be your champion, and for being my buddies all this time. I love you all x

Hey, I was the most successful villager mafia user on namafia from 2018 to 2020. I deleted my account after a while as the pandemic took a severe toll on my mental health, however upon seeing my old stomping ground be invited to the mafia universe tournament, I would love to regain my title as the best mafia player on the site. My play style is a mix of social engineering on top of mathematical analysis (typically regarding vote count, though I also keep heavy record of user sentiment towards other users). I believe I am more than adequate for the position of representing namafia, and would love the chance to partake in the annual event that your community have so painstakingly organized. A perfect day for me would probably be a long walk on the beach, followed by a great dinner and a glass of wine, then cuddling on the couch and playing video games. I love dogs, but am allergic to cats. Plants have a tendency to die from me just looking at them. I’m a bit of a nerd and love to get into crazy in-depth discussions on absurd fandom questions, as well as talk politics, science, religion, whatever.

I’m mostly just here to have fun and make some friends. This place is a little faster paced than I’m used to so I apologize if I’m slow getting back to you or miss your messages… it’s not personal.

Hello I'm Wiz, the man who speaks in scum slips. Yes, you heard it right! I'm known by that title by my reddit community because I speak in a way which seems like I scum slipped although that's just me, the typical Wiz. Most of the time I'm town but get voted out because of the way I play the game. I mainly like to interrogate players and pry them to the point that they get annoyed...lol. My favourite role is the seer because this role allows me to mechanically control the game. It's best if I'm given a wolf alignment though because I really enjoy it. I'm also known for my chaotic behaviour but I'm sure I'm going to have some difficulty here on this site because I don't often play here. So, pls forgive me if I'm unable to handle the fancy features of this site...hehe.

Q: Will night be shortened if an early hammer happens?
A: Maybe, subjective to when the hammer happens; if the hammer is very close to SoD 24-hour mark (or midway through the day), then night will be shortened so that it does not end up being 47.5 hours or similar!
