I don't think it's at all typical for me to collapse in that way it was just a really unusual case of "motivation/will to play game was hanging on by a thread dangling over the edge of a cliff and I felt like the game had on the spot turned into a certain loss in a very frustrating way and that thread just snapped and was done"

I think there's some wolves in this playerlist, not setup, that post count/activity could be indicative for. Lissa might even be one of them, but it's just a couple hours into the game, so. Not living in the thread isn't something I care about too much just yet.
I definitely don't think I'm one of them ftr.

I haven't had volume issues as a wolf when I actually have time to play the game in a while, and there was like, a part of me that actually wanted to rand wolf in this game. I've never randed wolf in this sort of playerlist and I've always kind of wanted to.

Realistically it'd probably have been a real rough ride regardless since while I feel pretty good about my wolf game now the core differences I think exist are probably things some of the people in this game understand way too well.
    Hm.

Okay, I just could kind of see you staring down a village full of people that can read you pretty solidly and it impacting volume. Like, you rand wolf and Newcomb/myself zero in on you, do you think you maintain consistent effort? I have vague memories of you kind of just folding in on yourself when he nailed you in mountainous arson. Though activity wasn't a real issue in either Anni, so meh.

Just was more a 'in this playerlist' read than a 'as a wolf' read.
I know it was playerlist specific I think I'd be excited to wolf in this playerlist and want to post a ton/have no issues doing so is what I was getting at.

I did collapse pretty $#@!ing hard in Mountainous Arson. It was a case of "I don't think there is any universe where I can actually do anything useful about this with the time I have available to me and I can't get myself to use my limited time and energy on it given that"

(which was kinda feelsbad and is still writing it out but it is what it is and it's not like i was ever getting anywhere there)

Was the specific combination of extremely limited time and energy + circumstances of newcomb havign subbed in suddenly and entirely flipped the game around in a way I didn't think was fightable with how I had played up to then and the time I had available

    This is word salad.

    See the difference?
it's really not that complicated. i thought your "mislynch lissa" joke-vote was not connected to the game. Jokes can come from yourself out of nowhere (from your own brain alone) or they can be a response/related to something that's happend already.

I think your vote was the first category, where i'd felt the second category would be more natural

I'm sifting through your post a little to try and decide how much I agree with specifics, but wanted to appreciate the effort etc.

    beck
How good would you feel about it being a hit?

Can you talk about your read on those three players in general?
Uh like. Not... great, takes me a lot to get to "great". I don't really know how to translate a typical strength of wolfread into a % or something like I don't know what my normal is. It's not a super strong read but not negligibly weak.

When I iso Beck he mostly just has something of a different "feel" to me than what I remember reading of him in his recent champs game, I think. It could be environmental to a degree? Like he does just... post like this to an extent, but his style feels a little more exaggerated compared to that/what I think of as his "normal".

I write this out and get some deja vu, I think I attempted a similar read once years ago and it was actually flipped. Uh, not sure what to do with that.

But like I feel like he's kind of overly playing up the "I'm a villager and that's kind of disappointing" thing, like he feels like it's something he "should" display (and I do think it's something he'd probably say something on as a villager) but it's coming out a little odd like he really wants it to be seen and thought about.

if you re-read my point (i guess it wasn't as clear as i thought), it wasn't that he made a joke vote. it was the *kind* of jokevote that pinged me. (i explain the kinds in my post)

With that said, it appearently wasn't a completely joke-y vote, so ill have to re-eval him (*suprised pikachu*) with that in mind
Oh good I was right. Go me
i'm giving Dave townpoints for going through the same journey I did and you can't stop me
I want to townread the "you can't stop me" here mindset-wise but it's pretty thin.

    Similar with this:

    No.

If I'm right, I'm right for ultimately meta/feels reasons and I'm not going to slog through your posts looking to articulate something that's going to be meaningful for zero people other than you, because if you're town you'll get to town on me in other, more interesting ways that don't involve me doing drudge work.

And if I'm wrong then you'll have to N1 me anyway because I'm going to demolish you tomorrow.

    So there's not much point.
Boring. Was hoping you'd take the bait and make it easy to catch you.

(If you actually did this busywork you were pretty much lock wolf)
    Hm.

Not sure I actually agree with that.

I think you'd think it was reasonable of me to be excited to get to v on you and like, spew it out / get everyone on board with you by doing the work.

This actually makes me townread you less lmao.
I think like half of my read on this is on the "lmao" which is kind of a lolread but responding to that response of "damn you didn't take the bait" with something along the lines of "lolno I don't like this" feels like... villagery comfort/idk what the word I'm looking for is. Maybe casualness I guess? I don't really think that fits either. Some sort of mix of casualness/comfort/enthusiasm idk.

Outside of that his posting is like... ~fine. But I really like those two posts. They're in the same sort of vein of I guess a type of emotional engagement to some degree/the mix of things I just listed off.

yogsloth is just like... uh. I feel like I definitely should be able to get some kind of deeper read off his posting so far when I read it over but I'm drawing a blank at where I'd go with that right now.

Sunbae's very strongly town reading you - do you think he should be? Or like. Is that something that concerns you regarding Sunbae's alignment
I have no idea what about anything I have done is readable and I don't really think any of it is

But it's a decently villagery read to me particularly in combination with how he is handling it; it's a combination of "it fits with the way he talks about treating early game" and I think "not a super obvious/intuitive choice to fake a read in line with that" with a bit of "at super surface just dropping a read of me that goes as far as nearly a hard clear with my posting in the game is gonna be potentially weird looking and also just feels like a weird route for him to go as a wolf"

    BIO:
Hey guys, I'm just a washed up Mafia player who hasn't actually played the game seriously in almost three years, but here I am, taking the stage of champs once again (neat). I previously attended the Season 4 Mafia Championships, though I don't really remember much from that game other than it was particularly rowdy and $#@!-posty most of the time. I've participated in over 100 forum games in the time that I have been active, as well as thousands of setups between EM and ToS, so I'm pretty confident in my knowledge of the game. On Marriland alone, I have received 14 total accolades for my play, ranging from best backup player, best Night Actions, best Daytime play, and best player altogether. I also have a nice little meme accolade for having been killed on the 2nd Night for five (five!) games in a row, believe it or not. Typically my favorite role to play is Vanilla Town, since I don't have to stress over the Night Phase nearly as much, and I can just play my own game with little to lose upon my death. I like to be a lot more aggressive than most people like, though my play style has evolved to be a lot more question-based than simply ragging on people. That actually came about because of S4 Champs, since I was pretty much the only person not asking questions on a regular basis, and instead forming opinions based on answers to other peoples' questions. While I may be a bit rusty starting out in this game, I hope to exhibit a similar performance to what I've become accustomed to!

Hey, I'm HATER. I competed in last year's championships in one of the meme-iest games of that year. My (admittedly garbage) community didn't send anyone else to play, so I became this year's de facto rep. Not that I mind, y'know, but at least last year I had a litle bit of hope someone else might show enough interest to be this year's rep. No such luck.

A little about me? I unapologetically make walls of text and cases like my life depends on it. I firmly believe that mafia theory is about behavior, and everyone in a mafia game has a reason for everything they do or say (in some cases, it might not be a particularly good reason, but hey). Sifting through the various possible motives is what the game is all about, and the village must take it upon themselves to do so.

I don't really know where to end this bio, seeing as how I'm writing it up at the last minute for Thingy (See, I've changed so much since last year, folks!) -- but I believe I've gone long enough with the utter bull$#@! in the pararagraph above for it to be considered an okay bio, and now I'm just trying to figure out a way to end this post in a way that doesn't sound like I'm an utter garbage fire (which I totally am not. Definitely.)

    BIO:
WELL, WHERE TO BEGIN.I GUESS I SHOULD START FROM THE BEGINNING. I FOUND THE AMAZING GROUP THAT I PLAY WITH ORIGINALLY ON THE CLASH OF CLANS FORUMS, AND I IMMEDIATELY FELL IN LOVE WITH MAFIA. I STARTED OUT ROUGH, GOT A REPUTATION FOR ALWAYS BEING TOWN, AND ACED MY FIRST GAME AS MAFIA, DESPITE HAVING A PARTNER WHO WOULD NOT LISTEN. EVENTUALLY, THE GROUP RAN AFOUL OF THE MODERATORS, AND WE WERE FORCED TO RELOCATE. AFTER TRYING ANOTHER FORUM SITE CALLED COMMUNITY ROYALE, WE EVENTUALLY STARTED PLAYING GAMES ONE DISCORD, WHICH HAS HAD ITS UPS AND DOWNS. SADLY, ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END. WE'RE CURRENTLY RUNNING OUR "FINAL GAME" WITH THIS GROUP, AS SOME CHANGES ARE COMING AND PLAYERS ARE STARTING TO LEAVE. WHILE WE'RE STILL GOING TO KEEP PLAYING, WE DON'T KNOW TO WHAT EXTENT THAT WILL CONTINUE, AND WE FIGURED THAT HONORING THE TIMES THAT WE ALL HAD TOGETHER WOULD BE A NICE TRIBUTE AND FAREWELL TO SOME PLAYERS. I DON'T ENTIRELY KNOW HOW I GOT HERE, BUT I'M DETERMINED TO DO MY BEST. I'D LIKE TO DEDICATE THIS GAME AND ALL FUTURE GAMES IN THIS CHAMPIONSHIP TO THE SMIRK NATION MAFIA CREW, BOTH NEW AND OLD. KEEP ON PLAYING, GUYS, AND I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST.

SOME THINGS ABOUT ME YOU SHOULD KNOW: I'M BUSY, AND MY D1 PLAY ISN'T THE BEST. THAT BEING SAID, AFTER THAT FIRST DAY, I PLAY FAIRLY AGGRESSIVELY WITH UNRELENTING PRESSURE (WITHOUT SOLID EVIDENCE, THAT IS). I PLAY FAIRLY ANALYTICALLY, AND WILL GENERALLY PUT DEFENDING MYSELF SECOND TO ATTACKING IF I HAVE A TARGET. I DON'T HAVE A PREFERRED FACTION, AND PEOPLE HAVE SAID THAT I DO WELL AS BOTH.

THAT'S PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING, I GUESS.

I just want to include as a disclaimer that something I like to do is make a case on someone and vote a different person in the same post. I personally think it's a nice way to pressure multiple people at once and to get reactions, but I've been under fire for it before so full disclaimer before the game even starts.

I think I'm more of a passive player, as I like to get more of a feel on people before I push hard on them... I'm really hesitant LOL This means that I have some trouble voting, but once I have someone as a scumread? I'll die on that hill - literally, haha! I also like to speak my mind during games, so some of my posts may seem like filler, but it's really just me trying to comprehend everything. I feel like a lot of people have trouble reading me because of that, but I'm always looking to improve - that's why I joined this game!

About three years ago I was talked into playing mafia by a couple of friends on PerC, and I haven't really looked back since. I've met a lot of cool people through mafia and made some really good friends because of it. I like the challenge the game presents and the fact that no two games are really ever the same. Different people, different setups, different roles, all make each game a unique experience.

If I had to describe my playstyle in one word it would be: inquisitive. I ask a lot of question. A lot. Especially early in the game. The first time I play with someone, that's one of the most common comments I get.

My favorite flavor of ice cream is chocolate chip cookie dough.

I was also told by <redacted> I should include lyrics from a Beach Boy's song in my bio:
"I'm gettin' bugged driving up and down the same old strip
I gotta find a new place where the kids are hip
My buddies and me are getting real well known
yeah, the bad guys know us and they leave us alone"

    REPRESENTING: La Cosa Nostra

    NATIONALITY: U.S.

    STARTED PLAYING MAFIA (YEAR): 2015

HAVE PLAYED MAFIA ON THE FOLLOWING SITES: Town of Salem, Discord (LCN/Hubmaf/Karma/Newbie's/Sai's/Eklipse/Mayham City), EscapeRestart, MafiaUniverse, IRL

    BIO:
Hello, my name’s Wyatt, and I’m currently 17 years old. I’ve been playing mafia for four years now, but this is my first year playing forum mafia competitively! You may know me from Town of Salem as xWyatt or Cypher, when I played that quite actively in 2017. I’ll try my hardest to win, but I think the biggest importance is to have fun, and to accept whatever result may happen (except gamethrowers, man I get salty at those).

People may say people with anime profile pictures do not deserve opinions. They’re 100 percent correct, don’t listen to anyone with an anime profile picture. More times than not, they’re godfather trying to mess with you.

If my faction loses the game, I can be the one person you can throw toxic comments at, even if it’s not my fault (or if it is, cause people make plenty of mistakes)! I’ll be your scapegoat if that makes you feel more emotionally stable! (Seriously though, don’t be toxic, it just makes your status plummet compared to all your peers.)

Anyways, I wish all my competitors the best of luck, but I wish myself the most amount of it! Good luck, and have fun!
  20. Game Thread FINAL NOTES This is already covered in "Using...

    FINAL NOTES

This is already covered in "Using our software" above, but since this is a role-heavy automated game with a lot of new players to the site, we want to make extra sure that people are submitting night actions correctly.

All roles have actions to use, and these actions can only be used on certain nights. The Cycle modifier part of your role will make it clear which nights you can use your action on. For example, if your role ends with "Cycle 2, 4", you can use your night action on nights 2 and 4.

One more thing that's important to understand is that you can pre-submit your actions for any given night on the day phase leading up to that night. So if you know that you'll be away during the night phase, or even if you're afraid that you might just forget, you can just submit it in advance. I.e. if your role has a Cycle 1 modifier, you can submit your action at any point on Day 1 - you don't need to wait until Night 1 begins.

If you choose to not use your action on a night that you are able to use it on, you will lose it and will not be able to "save" it for later.

How do I submit my Night Action?

In automated games, you may submit your actions by scrolling to the bottom of the thread and selecting your target(s) from a dropdown list using the Night Action Form for the each action. When you have selected a target, press Submit, and your current target will be changed to the player you selected.

You can change your action as many times as you'd like. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Sending your action via PM to the host does NOT work! You need to use the form!

The Mafia Championship is, first and foremost, about building bonds between communities and creating new friendships.

You are all here to compete, but you are also here to represent your home community. Amongst the 187 communities that are participating this year, we have many different community types, nationalities, playstyles and experience levels represented. The Mafia Championship is all about celebrating these differences and opening up an opportunity for us all to learn from each other.

As long as you are playing to win, there is no wrong way to play this game. Some people enjoy roleplaying, some enjoy "$#@!posting", some enjoy solving the logic puzzle, and some enjoy an aggressive approach to discerning others' alignments. They are all valid playstyles.

So we ask that, in the true spirit of the Mafia Championship, that you, as players, do your best to enjoy the experience for what it is: A melting pot of unique and wildly varying playstyles and personalities. You may grow frustrated at times. In fact, it is easy to grow frustrated when you're playing with people that you don't know, which is why we also hope that - besides following our Code of Conduct - you'll make an effort to get to know your fellow players at least a little bit. As the five previous seasons have shown, a majority of you will make several friends from this game.

    Good luck and have fun!

  21. Game Thread HELPFUL INFORMATION The boxes below contain...

    HELPFUL INFORMATION

The boxes below contain very helpful information. If you're a first-time player, we highly recommend that you read through it all.

    MAFIA GAME RULES
Rules may vary from community to community, so we highly advise you to carefully read these rules.

    • Only post/talk about the game in this thread. Don't PM other players, unless you are mafia and wish to talk with your teammates. Also, don't post anything about the game in other threads or on other forums.
    • Don't try to use the form of your role PM. So a screenshot of your role PM would be cheating.
    • You are not allowed to change your avatar, location or any other profile info during game in any way that could be construed as hinting at your role.
    • This is a game of lying. Players are expected to lie. No statement or promise a player makes within the game has any force outside the game. As an example, a bet offered in a game is not something you can collect if you win.
    • If we believe you to be bending the rules intentionally in a way that clearly goes against the spirit of the rules and the game, then that would also be grounds for modkill.
    • If you have any questions about rules, send a PM to your host. Avoid asking questions to the host in the thread. And definitely do not make a post in the game thread asking the host to sub out a player. If you feel that a player is not being active enough, PM Thingyman or Lissa about it (but we're always keeping an eye on this anyway, so don't worry).
    • Don't ever refer to private communications with the Game Host.
    • If you should ever require a replacement, PM both Thingyman and Lissa and stop posting in the thread.
    • No hydra'ing / multi-accounting is allowed. Do not share your account with anyone else.
    • You are not allowed to reference the post-game voting during the game. I.e. you cannot post "if you lynch me, you're not getting my vote after the game" or anything like that.
    • Treat your fellow players with respect. Hostility will not be tolerated.

Refer to this post for the complete, standard ruleset for mafia games.

I will repeat this particular rule once more in big letters to make sure you understand:

DO NOT EVER REFERENCE THIS GAME OUTSIDE OF THIS GAME THREAD. YOU SHOULD NOT BE TALKING ABOUT THIS GAME WHATSOEVER ON YOUR HOME SITE. IF PEOPLE ASK YOU QUESTIONS, TELL THEM YOU CAN'T TALK ABOUT THE GAME AND LINK THEM TO THIS THREAD.
    MINIMUM ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS
All players are required to make a minimum of 10 posts per game day.

The game hosts and tournament organizers reserve all rights to immediately sub out any player not meeting this requirement, regardless of whether or not the player has met the requirement on previous days. Similarly, if players are only meeting this requirement by spamming and/or posting in the last hour of the day, that and similar circumstances would also be cause for substitution.

If players aren't posting, the tournament organizers will always first try to prod the players in question.

    SUBSTITUTION PROCEDURE
If your representative needs to sub out during a QUALIFIER, your community's backup will take their place, assuming 1) you've elected one, 2) they've registered a user on Mafia Universe, and 3) that I'm able to get a hold of them within a reasonable amount of time (i.e. with enough time left in the current phase for the sub to work with).

If I can't get a hold of your backup, I will give the spot to a representative from a community that joined the series late - or failing that, a backup from one of the larger communities.

If your representative needs to sub out during a WILDCARD or FINALE, your community's backup will NOT take their place. Instead the next person who was in line to receive a wildcard or finale spot will take their place.
As was specified in the invitation, some of you will be picked by the jury to advance to one of this season's two wildcard games. In total, the jury selects 23 players that they feel are deserving of a second chance.

Below is a statement from the jury foreman.

Hello and good luck to all representatives!

We, the jury, would like to take this occasion to somewhat clarify our mission and criteria. We consist of finalists from Season 5 who have agreed to follow this year's qualifying games in order to select a number of players for the wildcard rounds who were not directly voted in but otherwise displayed skill - to give them a "second chance" of making the finals, in other words.

This past offseason, there was some momentum to make the jury's exact criteria for advancing select players more transparent, in order to give them an idea of things that we're looking for over the course of the games.

The problem with doing this, especially before the games start and we've really had a chance to talk to each other in detail, is that each individual juror has their own opinions of what constitutes a player worthy of advancement. Over the coming months, we'll certainly talk about it, argue about it, and come to a consensus - that's the entire point, after all - but singling out specific things we're looking for at this stage is unfortunately something we cannot do. Nor do we want to unduly influence games by having players play "unnaturally" simply because they know we're observing and judging them.

That said, we will be examining each player's output holistically. How accurate a player's reads are, how sound a player's logic and rationale is behind their reads, how well they know and use the game's mechanics, how well they work with others in order to accomplish their team's goals, and many more traits are all things we'll be taking into account. The only question is how heavily we weigh each trait in determining who to advance to the wildcard round, and that's going to take up a great amount of our time over the coming months.

tl;dr just play your game, try your best, good luck, and most importantly, have fun!

WHAT THE $#@! DOES "WTF" MEAN?

Are you not familiar with some of the terminology used by the other players? Maybe this will help you: TERMINOLOGY EXPLANATIONS.
    DISCLAIMER ALERT
The beauty of the Mafia Championship is that it brings communities closer together, and it provides an opportunity for players to learn new playstyles, metas and mechanics. And hopefully make new friends as well.

All that being said, the games can also very quickly become overwhelming and frustrating since you probably won't be able to play completely in the same way that you're used to. You don't necessarily need to adapt, but you will probably need to accept that some of the other players will have a different approach to the game than you.

We hope that you will embrace this as part of the experience. It's easy to grow frustrated with people when you don't know them (imagine how you would have felt playing with your friends on your home site if you didn't know any of them when you played your first game together), so a huge part of playing in the Championship is also getting to know the other players in some way.

Specifically, the seasons have taught us that you should be prepared for:
    • A very high level of activity. On average, there will be 600 posts per 24 hours during the early stages of the game. This is a melting pot of dedicated and enthusiastic players all gathered in one game.
    • You will likely face very different posting styles: Some will post walls of texts with many quotes, some will post a ton of one-liners, and some people will be very keen to interact in real-time in the thread (using the thread as a chat rather than a thread you pop into a few times a day).
    • A flurry of activity towards the end of the day. This means that if you check out 5 hours before the day ends, you should not be surprised to return the next day to see that the wagons were changed multiple times. If you want your vote to count, be careful to not agree to a game where you can never be around for EOD.
    • A few players in your game will probably have played with each other before. This has become impossible to prevent as increasingly many players have played on Mafia Universe.
    • We do not condone abusive remarks and we have banned several communities from participating based on this before, but each season features dozens of new communities, so there is always a slight risk that you might encounter abusive players. If you do, please report them and we'll take care of it.

    Some advice:
    • Get an avatar. This makes it easier for everyone to tell each other apart.
    • You can choose between different forum themes (i.e. make the forum look different) in the bottom left corner of the site. Some of them are better suited for mobile devices than others.
    • Look at your settings. You can customize profanity filter, you can choose to automatically receive email notifications of new replies to the game thread if you wish, and you can edit Posts per Page (many regular MU'ers have it set to 100 per page).
    • If at all possible, try to make a habit out of checking in as regularly as you can, especially during the very beginning of the game. Don't delay your first check-in - or you will face a swamp of posts and you will feel like you're constantly trying to catch up.

Most importantly, just do your best and have fun. The experience is mostly what you make it. There will be tryhards, there will be noobs, there will be meme posters, and there will be people just here to make friends. All are accepted, all are welcome.

All that being said, past seasons have shown that players get more enjoyment out of the games when they make connections with the other players, so we highly encourage you to join our Discord server either before or after the game.
  22. Game Thread Season 6, Game 11: Love and Hate Mafia [The Mafia Championship]

SEASON 6, GAME 11: LOVE AND HATE MAFIA (MAFIA CHAMPIONSHIP)

Welcome to Season 6 of the Mafia Championship!

An international forum-based tournament for Mafia players from 187 different communities

    Sponsored by Werewolf Online

Hosted By: Our automated @Mafia Host w/ @IfGodCouldDie providing flavor
    Start Date: June 17, 2019
Start of Day/End of Day: 10 PM EDT (03.00 UK time)
    Phase Lengths: 48/24
Lynch Mechanics: Deadline Lynch (person with most votes is lynched at the end of the deadline). In case of a tie, one of the tied players will randomly be lynched. No lynch is a valid vote. Starting Day 2, Majority is enabled, meaning the players can end day early if someone attains a majority of the votes.
Night Chat In Thread: No, thread will be locked during Night Phases
Out of Thread Communication: Only the Mafia team may communicate with each other outside of the thread (24/7)
LYLO Rules: Votes are automatically locked in at LYLO. I.e. when the game reaches a point where one more mislynch leads to a loss, you cannot change your vote once you have cast it.
Minimum Posting Requirement: Minimum 10 posts per Game Day
Maximum Posts Allowed: 175 posts per player per Game Day (restriction is lifted 2 hours before EOD though, so if you've reached your max you can post again at that time).
    ROLES
    13x Town
    4x Mafia

Of the following 18 roles, 1 will randomly be discarded and the other 17 will be assigned at random to one player in the game without regard for the player's alignment. Each role is restricted to using its action only on the nights listed on the chart. The Mafia will be told which role is not present in the game.

Role Acts On These Nights Modifier
    Watcher n1 Only Macho
    Watcher n2 Only
Alignment Cop n2 Only 1x Ninja
Alignment Cop n3 Only 1x Ninja

    Tracker n2, n4 1x Strongman
    Jailkeeper n1, n3

    Roleblocker n2, n4
    Role Cop n1, n2, n3 1x Strongman

    Jack of All Trades
    (Doctor, Jailkeeper, Voyeur)
    n1, n2, n3
    Voyeur n1, n2, n3, n4 1x Strongman

Watcher: Learns who visited the target, but not what actions they did

Alignment Cop: Learns whether the target is town or mafia, but not their role

    Vigilante: Kills the target

Doctor: Protects the target from kills on that night only (cannot self-protect)

Tracker: Learns who the target visited, but not what actions they did

Roleblocker: Prevents the target from using their action on that night only

Jailkeeper: Performs both a Doctor and Roleblocker action on the target, both protecting and blocking them (cannot self-protect)

Role Cop: Learns the role of the target, but not whether they are town or mafia

Jack of All Trades: Can use one of their abilities per night without repeats

Voyeur: Learns what type of actions were performed on the target, but not who did them

Macho: The player cannot be protected from kills

Strongman: Kills performed with Strongman cannot be stopped in any way (serves no purpose if the player is town)

Ninja: Night actions performed on the night that Ninja is used are invisible to investigative roles (Trackers, Watchers, and Voyeurs)

    MECHANICS
    • Role reveals at death are alignment only. You will not learn a player's exact role when they die.
    • Usage of night actions is optional, but unused actions will be lost.
    • Mafia factional kills are optional. Mafia may submit a factional kill each night, but are not required to. However, starting night 5, the factional kill will be mandatory.
    • Mafia factional kills are assigned. They can be tracked, watched, or roleblocked.
    • Mafia share a factional Night Kill, which is a single standard shot for their faction.
    • Mafia members may perform the faction kill in addition to their regular action at the same time.

    FAQ
Please note that Mafia Host - the Modbot - will post a FAQ as well that might contain answers to some questions that aren't covered here.

Q: What changes to the setup have been made since the practice games?

A: The Roleblocker role has been split into two roles, creating 18 total. One role will randomly be excluded from the setup, and the Mafia will be told which one it is. Also, both Tracker roles have gained Strongman modifiers.

    Q: What does Cycle mean?

A: Cycle is Modbot terminology for the night(s) on which a role can act. This is an example of how some roles might appear in Role PMs and Role Cop investigations:

    Jack of All Trades (x1 Doctor, x1 Jailkeeper, x1 Voyeur) | Cycle 1, 2, 3
    Doctor | Cycle 2, 4
    Alignment Cop | x1 Ninja | Cycle 2
    Macho Watcher | Cycle 1

Q: What do the Voyeur results look like?

A: The Voyeur sees the type of action performed on the target, but not the exact action. Modbot groups the actions into four categories: Protection (Doctor), Manipulative (Roleblocker, Jailkeeper), Killing (Vigilante, Mafia Faction Kill), and Investigative (all others). The Voyeur does not see their own action in their results. This is a sample results PM: "theknightsofneeee had Manipulative, Investigative, Killing done to them."

Q: What is the order of operations? What happens if a roleblocker targets a roleblocker?

A: The automated post at the start of each game contains a FAQ (in a spoiler tag) which answers these questions and more. However, there is one important clarification: the order of operations lists Strongman Kills first because they are immune to blocks, and regular kills are listed ahead of investigative actions because investigative roles can witness killing actions, but this only means that the target is marked for death before other actions are processed. No deaths actually occur until after all actions have been processed. In other words, dying at night never stops a player's action from happening.

The other important pieces of information are that Roleblockers act before Jailkeepers and that those roles are capable of blocking another player who attempts to use the same action. For more detailed information, please consult the aforementioned FAQ.

Q: Can Mafia players target their teammates with night actions?

A: Yes. The Mafia's faction kill cannot be used on a member of their own team, but all other actions (including Vigilante kills) may be used on members of their own team.

Q: Can Doctors and Jailkeepers self-target in order to protect themselves?

    A: No.

    Q: Which roles can self-target?

    A: Only Watchers.

Q: Are the Strongman and Ninja actions limited only to the nights listed on the chart?

A: No. If a player is Mafia, they may use their Strongman or Ninja ability on any night.

Q: Can players be investigated while they are jailkept?

A: Yes. Jailkeep is a combination of roleblock and doctor, neither of which prevent investigations on the target.

"I am SOOOO sad i didnt roll mafia this game i really wanted to" and vice versa for town. They are posts that happen in every game and they seem like such dirty(not in a good way) type of post. Some of them can be ok but i dont like how beck did it and i dont like voxx jumping commenting on it indirectly calling himself town.

It's how I play the early game, just kind of sift through it, point out things that jump out, and hedge my way around until I get some stronger town reads and continually narrow it down into people that just aren't villagery enough to care if they die.

Talk to me about the me/beck thing, too.

I needed some general copypasta Newcomb feeling posts to get into the zone. My thought process will still be my own as the game goes forward, just filtered through the lens of elegance and someone with better writing skills than my own.

Could see it being case of realizing it'd look bad/needing to back it up in this playerlist or something
This post feels a little more surface level commentary-like than I'd expect from Voxx. I don't see this behavior from SS as something wolfy, more just something that's odd. There's a hint of fitting the read to the feeling - rather than having a feeling and extrapolating from there

    What do you guys think @Lissa @Five @SwedishSkumbag ?
i think seeing you attempt to imitate newcomb is bizarre

i also don't really think it's that surfacey, i'd call it fairly deep compared to where we're at in the game

feel like the reason for it you're describing is the kind of thing that'd exist regardless of alignment if it existed at all in the playerlist context

Decent chunk. Don't really play on MU on this account outside of champs the one year, tend to just make an alt account for each game I play in, or play in an anon game.

Completed VOTING TIME . Adrian Bijou DansGame89...

    VOTING TIME

All players that participated in this game must vote for who you think is the best all-around mafia player based on what you've seen from this game.

THIS IS NOT AN MVP VOTE, nor is it a vote for the player who had the most positive impact on the game (otherwise the people who died early would rarely be in contention). Instead, you should vote based off who you think displayed the most overall skill as either alignment.

You are giving a RANKED TOP 4.

The names should be ordered from first to last. The first player will receive 5 points, the second player will receive 4 points, the third player will receive 3 points, and the fourth player will receive 2 points. You may not include yourself in your votes.

The player receiving the most points will advance directly to the finale, and the player receiving the second-most points will be included in one of the two Wildcard games. I will also reveal the rest of the top 4.

There will be two Wildcard games held after qualifiers with 17 players each. 11 of those players are those who received the second most points in each game, and the remaining 23 are selected by the Jury. Players in the Wildcard games have another shot to advance to the finale.

PM your votes to me please!

Role of the Day
Hot Potato

The Hot Potato is a player who starts off with the "Hot Potato" item in their possession. On Night 1, they have to pass the item to a new player, who will in turn pass it on to someone new on Night 2, etc. Any player carrying this item cannot use any night action on the night that they are passing it off to someone new.
