Completed Hi Amrock We did a survey after last season...

That's because the job of wolves is to bring it home, and sometimes doing that requires you doing something that isn't neccessarily "skillful." For example, if you see that town is trying to lynch all the top posters, the most "skilled" thing for a wolf to do would be to fake being a new player and just post the minimum every time. Is that something that anyone here would push forward? No. And yet it is the maximum thing the wolf could do in that situation to advance their win condition.

There are countless more examples and situations of this that have occured, and will occur in the future. The truth is that wolfing is much more results oriented than villaging. Even in a village loss, you can successfully try and note some things that are "skillful"- like having good reads, making yourself town, controlling the thread, explaining points well, being perceptive, etc, the list goes on and on. Even in a wolf WIN, what exactly can you point to that is "skilled" besides the dubious metric of 'towncred acquired." That's why villagers often get voted in the top 4 for wolf wins, while the ONLY time a wolf advances in a town win in the vast majority of cases is if they bussed.

And just to add on to that, one of the things I've discussed with people time and time again, on the forums, on discord, and in DMS, is that repeatability is the the key to how they base their votes or should base it. Statements like "who would you want on your team in the future", or statements such as these:

That's the question that I think you need to ask yourself, and its how I determined who I would vote for in this game. Obviously, we can't play 100 games before voting, but that would be the best way to determine who is the best player out of the 17 of us. I think that all of the names I listed would win """MVP""" more than you. Carson and inkarnit would probably come up close to your total as well, in my head.
    ... they dominate the narrative.

Yeah. This is a fine mentality to have, is pushed upon by the champs organizes, yet is, again, biased against wolves. That's because what wolves need to do to win has NOTHING to do with repeatability. If someone wants to pretend to be a slanker, or pretend to be someone that tunnels everyone every game- is that something that they could repeat or would want to repeat in future games? No, but it's an excellent and skillful wolf strategy. What about a wolf that wants to be abrasive as $#@! to get towncred? Do you think that's going to get them any favors in future village or wolf games now that someone has meta? No. There are a ton of village things that you can say you would want repeated, or that you can notice and say "I would want them on my team for the next 100 games", but sometimes a successful wolf is not that.

And let alone the fact that almost always wolves are held to the standard of "well, would we want this person on our team when they rand VILLA," while villas are almost NEVER held to the standarrd of "well, would they be able to repeat this as a wolf?" Like, a lot of times last year people thought "well, this wolf being super aggressive and condescinding would ruin morale as a villager!" but then when a villager posted 500 times, I almost never saw the question of "would they be able to replicate this as a wolf." Or "I would not want this person on my team if they randed wolf." It's really, really unfair. Again, repeatability is super, super unfairly pushed in favor of villagers.

Plus, just taking a step back, what even is skill? Everyone I've talked to has talked about skill in terms of stuff from a village PoV, and, like I said, this makes sense, as there are very few things you can talk about that wolves neccessarily did "skillfullly." And that's because wolfing is adaptive. It's about looking at the circumstances and exploiting weaknesses. It's about making a plan in wolfchat that might involve bussing, might involve being bussed, and might involve powerwolfing. It's about supporting each other emotionally and in the gamethread. It's about doing WHAT IT TAKES TO WIN- which may OR may not be something that people consider skillful, and may OR MAY NOT be something that you would want to replicate in the future. And doing what it takes to win means that pulling out the win is the absolute number one goal for a wolfteam, and what they should ultimately be taken into consideration the most. Eve

@Beky , I just want to say that I probably? would have voted you in the top 4 if I was in your game over Beck. And this is coming from someone that respects Beck probably more than 90% of people on this site. And I also want to say that it simply dosen't matter. There are many, many, MANY more reasons than this why the champs voting system as it stands is oudated, inefficient, and problematic. (Which I'll include at the end of this post). The truth is that you should just ignore all the problems and play it as it is; to have fun, and not worry about it, because based on my conversations with players, organizers, and moderators, they are unwilling to have a discussion about the deficiencies and this will most likely continue until the end.

For posterity, here are the 7 reasons that champs voting system as it stands sucks:

    1) Wolves are inherently biased against, as I just described above, and some of this is due to INTENTIONAL wording by the administrators that pushes you to not look at the results of the game and more "skill."
    2) Top posters get an incredible advantage, looking both empiracally and anecdotally, and this sucks for the communities that are used to a low posting environment. On that note, people that try to "take charge" of the thread almost always get the votes, while the people that stay on the sidelines, make good points and make critical votes (with fewer posts) are arguably equally important and often less obtrusive to the village effort as a whole.
    3) Wolves have an alterior motive to bus. There is no way around this. Bussing wolves advance, while the wolves that GET bussed don't. Why should that be? It's not inherently more skilled to bus than to get bussed, and in fact VERY skillful to spew people town before you are getting lynched. Take carsongarden- I'm sure he played a good game. But why is he getting more credit for the bus than someone such as say music, who successfully spewed Beky and others town? In this same line of thought, wolves that get lynched are inherently discriminated against, despite almost every good wolf saying that getting lynched is not the end of the world and ultimately is a sign of a GOOD wolf, as they've pushed an anti-village agenda. Wolves that survive to endgame get major points, while wolves who get their hands dirty and therefore get lynched almost never advance. And this isn't to say that bussers, or people that bus, shoulden't be rewarded. It's moreso ANOTHER example of how this system just $#@!s over wolves, because again, it's adaptive- and there isn't a "set" criteria that you can see skill for.
    4) It just sucks for salty people on either team to be voting for the players to advance. Although nobody would admit it, it's my belief that it's almost impossible to be unbiased in this regard. Your trying to tell me that after rooting for your team emotionally for so many days, you are going to want to vote someone from the opposite alignment in? They are your enemies, and 1 day forward you are going to forget that subconsciously and say "wow, you tricked me/caught me, really good game?" No. At least not in the back of people's minds. And news flash: There are more villagers than wolves.
    5) The metric is flawed. Part of the reason it's flawed is because it messes over wolves, but it's flawed in other ways. It's my belief that taking into account results AND process is the best way to advance, and taking into results matters more for wolves and process matters more for villagers. It sucks that people say that process is almost all you should look at, because ultimately ww is a team game (for both sides). And when teams win, how often are people singled out for being better? Teams ALWAYS say it's a team effort. And even in votes like an MVP vote, it's because you did better results, not process. And besides the deep-seated reasons that this metric is flawed, you have a lot of things that can be improved to make it clearer what you are voting on, but that have been shot down by those in charge when I've tried to make it more clarified (such as clarifying that you should not be letting past experiences with a player/their reputation bias you, which I think happens subconsciously whether we like it or not).
    6) Villagers who are nightkilled early are screwed, and people who are alive in LyLo are favored. This goes for both alignments, actually, as I already noted the reason it's a problem to say the wolves who died early did any worse. However, I think this problem is exacerbated for villagers, because really the best test of skill is whether you died early or not. YOU were the person that the wolves feared the most. (yes, I know this setup arguably has some safeguards against this, but it's DEFINITELY true 100% in other setups and this still applies to this setup some anyway). Sure, voting a wolf in a LyLo f3 is snazzy and cool, but if you were any decent you would have died earlier. That's just my opinion. And again, this isn't a 100% thing- sometimers villagers can just get not killed for some reason or another- but it happens more times than it should.
    7) A very specicic one- but wolfchat itself is always ignored. This is critical and something that they should be emphasizing more. How can you judge the skill play of a wolf without even taking into consideration their side of things? How can you judge their actions from a village perspective all game? Don't lie- most villagers here just haven't done it. I know because i've asked them more than once.
    Hi Amrock

We did a survey after last season and plan on doing one after this one as well. The last survey didn't indicate that any changes were needed with regards to the voting criteria, but we will, of course, again be open to changes to this. To say that we aren't open to such changes seems strange, as the wording has been changed 3-4 times over the years. And this season alone had about 10 changes overall.

We are only interested in improving the Championship and having happy players. What motive would we have for doing anything else? Organizing this is a full-time job, literally. Me - and Lissa - pour a lot of time and energy into this. Of course we want it to be the best that it can.

I agree with much of your critique, and in an ideal world the way to fix it and have "better votes" and "the truly deserving players advance" would be to have more games, to force players to read mafia chat, to force players to wait a week and give the thread a re-read before casting their votes, to lock players out of the spectator chat until they've cast their votes, etc. etc.

But all of this would make the Championship more elitist and more unfun than we want it to be. Because as is stated in the mission statement and several other places, this Championship is first and foremost a social event, with the competitive element being of secondary importance.

I do think it'd be a good idea to add a sentence about it being a good idea to look through the mafia chat before casting your votes. Beyond that, I'm not sure myself what changes would be good, but I'm open to hearing concrete suggestions @Amrock

You did good and you deserve to pass but bcs we know Beck to be good player we will give him points.

It is really really unfair towards new players who will almost always be put behind someone who is known
should i have voted for you in retrospect? yeah, i probably should've. i'm sincerely sorry i didn't. i do think though that beck played a good game regardless of what his reads or how well he projected town. he got lynched but that doesn't mean he's a bad player or he played a bad game, at least imo.

i don't know how to fix the issue you bring up in this post honestly because it's hard to not take into account the reputation of players when voting.
I guess I was wrong in reading vanity's post, because to be clear, this isn't how the post-game voting is supposed to go. Reputation shouldn't be a factor.

But of course, it's impossible to not let it bias your opinion somewhat, if you do know of a person's general skill level.

But again @Beky - that is why the jury is there. If you think an injustice has happened, the jury's purpose is to fix that. So trust in the jury

I think there is partly a misunderstanding here. Because I know that many players that voted Beck here have not played with him before, so it isn't based on previous knowledge of his game. If it was, I agree - that isn't fair and that isn't how the voting is supposed to work.

I think what vanity. is saying is that Beck showed himself to have good game understanding or logic or whatever (again, I didn't follow the game, so can't speak to whether this is true) despite the fact that he got mislynched.

To put it another way: We don't know who the very best mafia player on the planet is. But we do know that that person has been lynched before. That doesn't meant that if you looked at that person's skill in the game where he got lynched that you couldn't possibly still tell that he/she is a player of a high calibre.

I would rather take that because i know that is my limit instead of being given consolation prize even tho i did very good and won.

No disrespect to wildcards but i strongly believe i deserved the top 4.
A jury spot should by no means be considered a consolation prize. Jury spots are given out by very qualified players - specifically, last year's finalists. And the jury is there to make sure that "justice" prevails, and that good, worthy players advance, because sometimes the player votes MAYBE doesn't get it right (I didn't follow the game, so I can't speak to whether that happened here), and sometimes there are just several deserving players or other factors at play that make the results play out weird in a vote determined by the players themselves.

The wildcard games each year are often considered the very best games, even better than the finale games.

As Apoc says, this is indeed a privately run site, and I have a certain vision for how I'd like it to be run and which kind of people I'd like to be on staff. And I prefer letting that dictate how MU is moderated, and then people can choose whether MU is for them or not, and hopefully they will decide that it is, since all I want is a nice and welcoming community

For example, we learned what kind of player Thanos was: he would townread anybody that townread him and scumread people that scumread him. We knew that lynching him gave town zero information about reads and gave every person involved in the lynch a free pass. If Thanos was a different player we would approach things differently.

In a game filled with champions and people with awareness we would have played differently, but to suggest that wolves played bad because we recognized what we could get away with is absurd.
This is a common sentiment that specchat has during wolf wins, especially lopsided ones, and I wouldn't worry too much about it.

You guys played well and dominated the town. Let the sweep be vindication enough for your efforts.

    Alright, guys! It's confirmation time.

Your game is starting Monday. Please post /confirm to signify that you'll be there and that you're still comfortable with the activity requirements (making at least 10 posts per game day).

    FINAL NOTES

This is already covered in "Using our software" above, but since this is a role-heavy automated game with a lot of new players to the site, we want to make extra sure that people are submitting night actions correctly.

All roles have actions to use, and these actions can only be used on certain nights. The Cycle modifier part of your role will make it clear which nights you can use your action on. For example, if your role ends with "Cycle 2, 4", you can use your night action on nights 2 and 4.

One more thing that's important to understand is that you can pre-submit your actions for any given night on the day phase leading up to that night. So if you know that you'll be away during the night phase, or even if you're afraid that you might just forget, you can just submit it in advance. I.e. if your role has a Cycle 1 modifier, you can submit your action at any point on Day 1 - you don't need to wait until Night 1 begins.

If you choose to not use your action on a night that you are able to use it on, you will lose it and will not be able to "save" it for later.

How do I submit my Night Action?

In automated games, you may submit your actions by scrolling to the bottom of the thread and selecting your target(s) from a dropdown list using the Night Action Form for the each action. When you have selected a target, press Submit, and your current target will be changed to the player you selected.

You can change your action as many times as you'd like. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Sending your action via PM to the host does NOT work! You need to use the form!

The Mafia Championship is, first and foremost, about building bonds between communities and creating new friendships.

You are all here to compete, but you are also here to represent your home community. Amongst the 187 communities that are participating this year, we have many different community types, nationalities, playstyles and experience levels represented. The Mafia Championship is all about celebrating these differences and opening up an opportunity for us all to learn from each other.

As long as you are playing to win, there is no wrong way to play this game. Some people enjoy roleplaying, some enjoy "$#@!posting", some enjoy solving the logic puzzle, and some enjoy an aggressive approach to discerning others' alignments. They are all valid playstyles.

So we ask that, in the true spirit of the Mafia Championship, that you, as players, do your best to enjoy the experience for what it is: A melting pot of unique and wildly varying playstyles and personalities. You may grow frustrated at times. In fact, it is easy to grow frustrated when you're playing with people that you don't know, which is why we also hope that - besides following our Code of Conduct - you'll make an effort to get to know your fellow players at least a little bit. As the five previous seasons have shown, a majority of you will make several friends from this game.

    Good luck and have fun!

  27. Completed HELPFUL INFORMATION The boxes below contain...

    HELPFUL INFORMATION

The boxes below contain very helpful information. If you're a first-time player, we highly recommend that you read through it all.

    MAFIA GAME RULES
Rules may vary from community to community, so we highly advise you to carefully read these rules.

    • Only post/talk about the game in this thread. Don't PM other players, unless you are mafia and wish to talk with your teammates. Also, don't post anything about the game in other threads or on other forums.
    • Don't try to use the form of your role PM. So a screenshot of your role PM would be cheating.
    • You are not allowed to change your avatar, location or any other profile info during game in any way that could be construed as hinting at your role.
    • This is a game of lying. Players are expected to lie. No statement or promise a player makes within the game has any force outside the game. As an example, a bet offered in a game is not something you can collect if you win.
    • If we believe you to be bending the rules intentionally in a way that clearly goes against the spirit of the rules and the game, then that would also be grounds for modkill.
    • If you have any questions about rules, send a PM to your host. Avoid asking questions to the host in the thread. And definitely do not make a post in the game thread asking the host to sub out a player. If you feel that a player is not being active enough, PM Thingyman or Lissa about it (but we're always keeping an eye on this anyway, so don't worry).
    • Don't ever refer to private communications with the Game Host.
    • If you should ever require a replacement, PM both Thingyman and Lissa and stop posting in the thread.
    • No hydra'ing / multi-accounting is allowed. Do not share your account with anyone else.
    • You are not allowed to reference the post-game voting during the game. I.e. you cannot post "if you lynch me, you're not getting my vote after the game" or anything like that.
    • Treat your fellow players with respect. Hostility will not be tolerated.

Refer to this post for the complete, standard ruleset for mafia games.

I will repeat this particular rule once more in big letters to make sure you understand:

DO NOT EVER REFERENCE THIS GAME OUTSIDE OF THIS GAME THREAD. YOU SHOULD NOT BE TALKING ABOUT THIS GAME WHATSOEVER ON YOUR HOME SITE. IF PEOPLE ASK YOU QUESTIONS, TELL THEM YOU CAN'T TALK ABOUT THE GAME AND LINK THEM TO THIS THREAD.
    MINIMUM ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS
All players are required to make a minimum of 10 posts per game day.

The game hosts and tournament organizers reserve all rights to immediately sub out any player not meeting this requirement, regardless of whether or not the player has met the requirement on previous days. Similarly, if players are only meeting this requirement by spamming and/or posting in the last hour of the day, that and similar circumstances would also be cause for substitution.

If players aren't posting, the tournament organizers will always first try to prod the players in question.

    SUBSTITUTION PROCEDURE
If your representative needs to sub out during a QUALIFIER, your community's backup will take their place, assuming 1) you've elected one, 2) they've registered a user on Mafia Universe, and 3) that I'm able to get a hold of them within a reasonable amount of time (i.e. with enough time left in the current phase for the sub to work with).

If I can't get a hold of your backup, I will give the spot to a representative from a community that joined the series late - or failing that, a backup from one of the larger communities.

If your representative needs to sub out during a WILDCARD or FINALE, your community's backup will NOT take their place. Instead the next person who was in line to receive a wildcard or finale spot will take their place.
As was specified in the invitation, some of you will be picked by the jury to advance to one of this season's two wildcard games. In total, the jury selects 23 players that they feel are deserving of a second chance.

Below is a statement from the jury foreman.

Hello and good luck to all representatives!

We, the jury, would like to take this occasion to somewhat clarify our mission and criteria. We consist of finalists from Season 5 who have agreed to follow this year's qualifying games in order to select a number of players for the wildcard rounds who were not directly voted in but otherwise displayed skill - to give them a "second chance" of making the finals, in other words.

This past offseason, there was some momentum to make the jury's exact criteria for advancing select players more transparent, in order to give them an idea of things that we're looking for over the course of the games.

The problem with doing this, especially before the games start and we've really had a chance to talk to each other in detail, is that each individual juror has their own opinions of what constitutes a player worthy of advancement. Over the coming months, we'll certainly talk about it, argue about it, and come to a consensus - that's the entire point, after all - but singling out specific things we're looking for at this stage is unfortunately something we cannot do. Nor do we want to unduly influence games by having players play "unnaturally" simply because they know we're observing and judging them.

That said, we will be examining each player's output holistically. How accurate a player's reads are, how sound a player's logic and rationale is behind their reads, how well they know and use the game's mechanics, how well they work with others in order to accomplish their team's goals, and many more traits are all things we'll be taking into account. The only question is how heavily we weigh each trait in determining who to advance to the wildcard round, and that's going to take up a great amount of our time over the coming months.

tl;dr just play your game, try your best, good luck, and most importantly, have fun!

WHAT THE $#@! DOES "WTF" MEAN?

Are you not familiar with some of the terminology used by the other players? Maybe this will help you: TERMINOLOGY EXPLANATIONS.
    DISCLAIMER ALERT
The beauty of the Mafia Championship is that it brings communities closer together, and it provides an opportunity for players to learn new playstyles, metas and mechanics. And hopefully make new friends as well.

All that being said, the games can also very quickly become overwhelming and frustrating since you probably won't be able to play completely in the same way that you're used to. You don't necessarily need to adapt, but you will probably need to accept that some of the other players will have a different approach to the game than you.

We hope that you will embrace this as part of the experience. It's easy to grow frustrated with people when you don't know them (imagine how you would have felt playing with your friends on your home site if you didn't know any of them when you played your first game together), so a huge part of playing in the Championship is also getting to know the other players in some way.

Specifically, the seasons have taught us that you should be prepared for:
    • A very high level of activity. On average, there will be 600 posts per 24 hours during the early stages of the game. This is a melting pot of dedicated and enthusiastic players all gathered in one game.
    • You will likely face very different posting styles: Some will post walls of texts with many quotes, some will post a ton of one-liners, and some people will be very keen to interact in real-time in the thread (using the thread as a chat rather than a thread you pop into a few times a day).
    • A flurry of activity towards the end of the day. This means that if you check out 5 hours before the day ends, you should not be surprised to return the next day to see that the wagons were changed multiple times. If you want your vote to count, be careful to not agree to a game where you can never be around for EOD.
    • A few players in your game will probably have played with each other before. This has become impossible to prevent as increasingly many players have played on Mafia Universe.
    • We do not condone abusive remarks and we have banned several communities from participating based on this before, but each season features dozens of new communities, so there is always a slight risk that you might encounter abusive players. If you do, please report them and we'll take care of it.

    Some advice:
    • Get an avatar. This makes it easier for everyone to tell each other apart.
    • You can choose between different forum themes (i.e. make the forum look different) in the bottom left corner of the site. Some of them are better suited for mobile devices than others.
    • Look at your settings. You can customize profanity filter, you can choose to automatically receive email notifications of new replies to the game thread if you wish, and you can edit Posts per Page (many regular MU'ers have it set to 100 per page).
    • If at all possible, try to make a habit out of checking in as regularly as you can, especially during the very beginning of the game. Don't delay your first check-in - or you will face a swamp of posts and you will feel like you're constantly trying to catch up.

Most importantly, just do your best and have fun. The experience is mostly what you make it. There will be tryhards, there will be noobs, there will be meme posters, and there will be people just here to make friends. All are accepted, all are welcome.

All that being said, past seasons have shown that players get more enjoyment out of the games when they make connections with the other players, so we highly encourage you to join our Discord server either before or after the game.
  28. Completed Season 6, Game 2: Deadly Confections [The Mafia Championship]

SEASON 6, GAME 2: DEADLY CONFECTIONS (MAFIA CHAMPIONSHIP)

Welcome to Season 6 of the Mafia Championship!

An international forum-based tournament for Mafia players from 187 different communities

    Sponsored by Werewolf Online

Hosted By: Our automated @Mafia Host w/ @Aquilla providing flavor
    Start Date: May 6, 2019
Start of Day/End of Day: 9 PM EDT (02.00 UK time)
    Phase Lengths: 48/24
Lynch Mechanics: Deadline Lynch (person with most votes is lynched at the end of the deadline). In case of a tie, one of the tied players will randomly be lynched. No lynch is a valid vote. Starting Day 2, Majority is enabled, meaning the players can end day early if someone attains a majority of the votes.
Night Chat In Thread: No, thread will be locked during Night Phases
Out of Thread Communication: Only the Mafia team may communicate with each other outside of the thread (24/7)
LYLO Rules: Votes are automatically locked in at LYLO. I.e. when the game reaches a point where one more mislynch leads to a loss, you cannot change your vote once you have cast it.
Minimum Posting Requirement: Minimum 10 posts per Game Day
Maximum Posts Allowed: 175 posts per player per Game Day (restriction is lifted 2 hours before EOD though, so if you've reached your max you can post again at that time).
    ROLES
    13x Town
    4x Mafia

Of the following 18 roles, 1 will randomly be discarded and the other 17 will be assigned at random to one player in the game without regard for the player's alignment. Each role is restricted to using its action only on the nights listed on the chart. The Mafia will be told which role is not present in the game.

Role Acts On These Nights Modifier
    Watcher n1 Only Macho
    Watcher n2 Only
Alignment Cop n2 Only 1x Ninja
Alignment Cop n3 Only 1x Ninja
    Vigilante n2 Only
    Vigilante n3 Only
    Doctor n1, n3
    Doctor n2, n4
    Tracker n1, n3 1x Strongman
    Tracker n2, n4 1x Strongman
    Jailkeeper n1, n3
    Jailkeeper n2, n4
    Roleblocker n1, n3
    Roleblocker n2, n4
    Role Cop n1, n2, n3 1x Strongman
    Jack of All Trades
    (Role Cop, Tracker, Roleblocker)
    n1, n2, n3
    Jack of All Trades
    (Doctor, Jailkeeper, Voyeur)
    n1, n2, n3
    Voyeur n1, n2, n3, n4 1x Strongman

Watcher: Learns who visited the target, but not what actions they did

Alignment Cop: Learns whether the target is town or mafia, but not their role

    Vigilante: Kills the target

Doctor: Protects the target from kills on that night only (cannot self-protect)

Tracker: Learns who the target visited, but not what actions they did

Roleblocker: Prevents the target from using their action on that night only

Jailkeeper: Performs both a Doctor and Roleblocker action on the target, both protecting and blocking them (cannot self-protect)

Role Cop: Learns the role of the target, but not whether they are town or mafia

Jack of All Trades: Can use one of their abilities per night without repeats

Voyeur: Learns what type of actions were performed on the target, but not who did them

Macho: The player cannot be protected from kills

Strongman: Kills performed with Strongman cannot be stopped in any way (serves no purpose if the player is town)

Ninja: Night actions performed on the night that Ninja is used are invisible to investigative roles (Trackers, Watchers, and Voyeurs)

    MECHANICS
    • Role reveals at death are alignment only. You will not learn a player's exact role when they die.
    • Usage of night actions is optional, but unused actions will be lost.
    • Mafia factional kills are optional. Mafia may submit a factional kill each night, but are not required to. However, starting night 5, the factional kill will be mandatory.
    • Mafia factional kills are assigned. They can be tracked, watched, or roleblocked.
    • Mafia share a factional Night Kill, which is a single standard shot for their faction.
    • Mafia members may perform the faction kill in addition to their regular action at the same time.

    FAQ
Please note that Mafia Host - the Modbot - will post a FAQ as well that might contain answers to some questions that aren't covered here.

Q: What changes to the setup have been made since the practice games?

A: The Roleblocker role has been split into two roles, creating 18 total. One role will randomly be excluded from the setup, and the Mafia will be told which one it is. Also, both Tracker roles have gained Strongman modifiers.

    Q: What does Cycle mean?

A: Cycle is Modbot terminology for the night(s) on which a role can act. This is an example of how some roles might appear in Role PMs and Role Cop investigations:

    Jack of All Trades (x1 Doctor, x1 Jailkeeper, x1 Voyeur) | Cycle 1, 2, 3
    Doctor | Cycle 2, 4
    Alignment Cop | x1 Ninja | Cycle 2
    Macho Watcher | Cycle 1

Q: What do the Voyeur results look like?

A: The Voyeur sees the type of action performed on the target, but not the exact action. Modbot groups the actions into four categories: Protection (Doctor), Manipulative (Roleblocker, Jailkeeper), Killing (Vigilante, Mafia Faction Kill), and Investigative (all others). The Voyeur does not see their own action in their results. This is a sample results PM: "theknightsofneeee had Manipulative, Investigative, Killing done to them."

Q: What is the order of operations? What happens if a roleblocker targets a roleblocker?

A: The automated post at the start of each game contains a FAQ (in a spoiler tag) which answers these questions and more. However, there is one important clarification: the order of operations lists Strongman Kills first because they are immune to blocks, and regular kills are listed ahead of investigative actions because investigative roles can witness killing actions, but this only means that the target is marked for death before other actions are processed. No deaths actually occur until after all actions have been processed. In other words, dying at night never stops a player's action from happening.

The other important pieces of information are that Roleblockers act before Jailkeepers and that those roles are capable of blocking another player who attempts to use the same action. For more detailed information, please consult the aforementioned FAQ.

Q: Can Mafia players target their teammates with night actions?

A: Yes. The Mafia's faction kill cannot be used on a member of their own team, but all other actions (including Vigilante kills) may be used on members of their own team.

Q: Can Doctors and Jailkeepers self-target in order to protect themselves?

    A: No.

    Q: Which roles can self-target?

    A: Only Watchers.

Q: Are the Strongman and Ninja actions limited only to the nights listed on the chart?

A: No. If a player is Mafia, they may use their Strongman or Ninja ability on any night.

Q: Can players be investigated while they are jailkept?

A: Yes. Jailkeep is a combination of roleblock and doctor, neither of which prevent investigations on the target.

Is the one in my profile sufficient or do I need to do something different?

And @The Admiral PM'ed me asking to be swapped to Game 8, which now has an open spot after LightFoot's swap, so that fits perfectly.

So there are now 3 open spots we're looking to fill:
    GAME 2 (MAY 6, 48/24, 9 PM EST EOD)

Yes, they can. Next week I will be going to all your communities and post more info about this.

    4. A couple of representatives have dropped out last minute. Do you perhaps know a community not on this list that might be interested in participating?

You can see the list in the above spoiler.

We are, yeah. With the high activity in these games, I think having two days a week where you wouldn't be able to check in would unfortunately put you at too big of a disadvantage, as you wouldn't be posting on those days and then would be playing catch up on the days after.

I guess really it depends on how much free time you have during the other days in the week. But Wednesday is the day that Day 1 ends, for example, so that's not optimal.

But, the only requirement is that you post minimum 10 times each game day. If you're comfortable with that and want to play, let me know @DanHibiki403. If not, we might need to call on @Heroic.

And just to confirm, Game 9 is good for you?

    GAME 9 (JUNE 10, 48/24, 1 PM EST EOD)

If you want, you can switch into one of these instead:

    GAME 7: JUNE 3, 12/12, 8 PM EST EOD
GAME 8: JUNE 3, 48/24, MIDNIGHT EST EOD
    GAME 11: JUNE 17, 48/24, 10 PM EST EOD

Game 11 would actually work a bit better for me. I like being around when the day phase ends and game 9 ends right in the middle of my work day. I could probably finagle my lunch break to make it work but I could definitely be available for it in game 11.

Note that 8 PM EST is 01.00 UK time.

    Compromises:
    • @V For Vendetta strongly prefers 12/12. But does the American deadline work for you, V? And the very high activity level? If not, feel free to try to arrange a swap to a different game.
    • Thrud marked the date yellow, but he prefers 12/12 - @Thrud, would you prefer a green date instead and compromise on phase lengths?

The game that I know a lot of you have been waiting for. The 12/12 cadillac game.
Confirming for Game 7. What does the cadillac thing mean? Am I being thrown....

    @dastar512

    Sort of

It's a game consisting of many people that are or have been regulars on Two Plus Two, BoardGameGeek, DailyMafia and/or here. All of which are considered very active and very high skill communities. Only very few communities play with 12/12 deadlines, and those that do just happen to have players that are usually very good at the game. Or well, it's probably not a total coincidence - players that have more time to devote to the game on a daily basis I guess might be more likely to grow better at the game more quickly, due to getting more experience in a shorter amount of time? :P

But of course, Two Plus Two is a poker forum (so consists of players that are used to reading/bluffing others), BoardGameGeek is for ... board game geeks, and Mafia Universe and DailyMafia are for players that are so excited about mafia that they migrated to a mafia-specific community :P. Maybe that's a better explanation

Role of the Day
Hot Potato

The Hot Potato is a player who starts off with the "Hot Potato" item in their possession. On Night 1, they have to pass the item to a new player, who will in turn pass it on to someone new on Night 2, etc. Any player carrying this item cannot use any night action on the night that they are passing it off to someone new.
