Sorry for the delay, I decided to do discord reveals first.
Btw, if you’re looking for a bunch of technical commentary and hot takes, sorry, that isn’t what I’m cut out to do. I’m basically just giving my opinion on the song. Badly.
1: Cl - this one hit me hard. I do prefer deeper singing voices when it comes to music and johnny cash definitely delivers.
2: Jalandh - Caleb hyles is a legend and I will fight anyone who says otherwise.
3: Bloody - definitely a good song, the beginning was pretty calm and I got kind of disappointed when the music picked up its pace.
4: Star - ngl kinda teared up listening to this one. There’s not a painfully long instrumental, every second of the song is used to great effect.
5: Visor - so so calming and nostalgic, I loved it
6: Knights - nice and slow, really gives off a kind of calming vibe. The last few beats were unnecessary imo, the song could’ve ended five seconds earlier.
7: Nutella - The music underscoring the cadence of the lyrics is beautiful.
8: M Plus 7 - really good for an instrumental
9: Quas - the lyrics are emotionally heart-wrenching, don’t get me wrong, but the singer’s voice didn’t appeal to me that much
10: Owner - meh
11: Zinnia - meh
12: Silmarils - annoying loops
13: Moonious - twenty one pilots are not a band I listen to because their type of music doesn’t really appeal to me. This song reinforced that, especially in the end when the music got so loud that I struggled to hear when they were singing and when they weren’t
14: Shubaka - definitely a sad song but not something I’d listen to voluntarily
15: Gbs - the refrain was maybe the only part of the song I actually liked
16: Smilefires - couldn’t get over the incessant droning in the background but the singer’s voice is decent
17: Iaafr - please tell me I’m not the only one who can’t stand the vocals here
18: Puns ltd - It’s the principle of it at this point

First is Jalandh with Sera Was Never from Dragon Age Inquisition. Anything with a badass girl in it is going to get my attention. The voice of the singer is just phenomenal and whatever the stringed instrument is there, I’m loving the sound.
April 14th, 2020, 07:46 PM
In second is Zinnia with Orpheus by Sara Barielles. This is such a beautiful song and so reminiscent of the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. I’m a sucker for star crossed lovers. Sara’s voice is incredibly calming and relaxing and I could seriously listen to this on repeat all day.
April 14th, 2020, 07:43 PM
In third is Knights with Lady Come Down from The Importance of Being Earnest. I love the cadence of the music and the voices of the singers. My favorite part is the beginning up until they hit “O leave thy lily flowered bed”
April 14th, 2020, 07:39 PM
In fourth is Nutella with Oathpact Abandoned by The Black Piper. The beginning is epic and really gives the feel of an adventure waiting to happen, but then it calms down and the music just flows. Amazing overall. I’m usually not a fan of instrumentals but this changed my mind.
April 14th, 2020, 07:36 PM
In fifth is cl with Home at Last by Steely Dan. The instrumental parts are okay, not really my favorite. I did enjoy the references to the Odyssey. Another issue I had is that I felt like the music overpowered the singer a bit too much at the beginning. Decent song overall.
April 14th, 2020, 07:36 PM
In sixth is gbsfranca with The Veldt by Deadmau5. Got to admit, I originally hated the music at the beginning and I was all ready to hate the rest of it but it’s actually a good song and it grows on you.
April 14th, 2020, 07:35 PM
In seventh is Star with Bambi by Hippo Campus. Interesting rhythm, don’t particularly like the way that “why” and “I” is sung here. Still a decent song.
April 14th, 2020, 07:35 PM
In eighth is Quas with, uh, something. The beginning and end parts were definitely good, but the middle parts where it was going fast and the music was harsh, not really my thing.
April 14th, 2020, 07:34 PM
In ninth is Iaafr with Feed Your Head by Paul Kalkebrenner. I like the references to Alice and the singer is clearly talented, but the background music wasn’t to my taste.
April 14th, 2020, 07:34 PM
In tenth is Mooni with The Heart of Everything by Within Temptation. Both the music and the singing sounded pretty rough and that’s not really the sort of music that appeals to me.
April 14th, 2020, 07:33 PM
In eleventh is Visor with The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Iron Maiden. I love this poem, originally written by coleridge, but I don’t think the iron maiden’s style of music fits the message. It doesn’t even sound like proper singing to me, sorry.
April 14th, 2020, 07:31 PM
In twelfth is Owner with The Book Report from the charlie brown musical. Certainly an entertaining song but the sheer amount of repetition, which I know is supposed to come off as humor, just came across as annoying and unnecessary to me, and I couldn’t follow in the latter half even while staring at the lyrics.
April 14th, 2020, 07:28 PM
In thirteenth is Bloody with a song that I believe would be called The Sand Child in english. The music is nice and calming but the high pitched voice of whoever is singing kind of annoyed me and I couldn’t get past that.

Songs Inspired by Books
This cat got 14 subs and I'm honestly surprised that no one subbed anything related to LOTR smh.
In last (fourteenth place) is Puns ltd with Sofa King by DangerDoom. Too fast for my taste tbh. The lyrics are confusing and just not my kind of music.
April 14th, 2020, 03:51 PM
@M Plus 7
@Owner Of A Lonely Heart
Reveals for the next cat will be tonight at 7 pm est. Reveals will then be every other day at 7 pm est until we finish, skipping saturday because it's been brought to my attention that that'll conflict with another reveal.
Sorry for the late notice!

1st Place - smilefires
The way the beginning of this song was very slow and it gradually built up sounded amazing. When all of the singers came in it gave me chills. Truly a wonderful work of art.
April 1st, 2020, 08:11 PM
2nd Place - starryeyeddream
I loved the intro to this song, it has a very upbeat vibe to it. This is not the type of music I would normally listen to but it’s a really good song.
April 1st, 2020, 08:06 PM
3rd Place - BLOODYRAIN10001
I am blown away by this performance. There are several instruments present here that I have never heard before. The latter half of the song was my favorite, when the vocals took more of a precedence in the song. Very enjoyable to listen to.
April 1st, 2020, 08:03 PM
4th Place - Zinnia
This is a pretty enjoyable song, the lead singer has a good voice with a bit of twang to it. There’s not much that’s bad about this song.
April 1st, 2020, 07:59 PM
5th Place - gbsfranca
The singer sounds - to me - similar to some american country singers. I like the vocals, I’m kind of ambivalent on the music itself though.
April 1st, 2020, 07:56 PM
6th Place - M Plus 7
I love that you can clearly hear the passion in his voice. It’s a very upbeat song and even if you don’t understand a word he’s saying, you can’t help but be a bit cheered up by listening to this.
April 1st, 2020, 07:52 PM
7th Place - Moonious
The music itself is pretty good. I’m not liking the singer’s voice all that much though. If I had this one could have gotten a higher ranking.
April 1st, 2020, 07:52 PM
8th Place - cl.
The singers here are very talented and I enjoyed the music and the beat for a while until it started feeling really repetitive. Overall a decent song.
April 1st, 2020, 07:45 PM
9th Place - nutella
It's very interesting that this song seems to switch from calm to fast paced and loud. I very much preferred the calm sections. The intro started out pretty good. The last fourth of the song is what put it ahead of knights.
April 1st, 2020, 07:41 PM
10th Place - KnightsofCydonia
First impression was that of a decent intro, if a bit high pitched. The singer has a very good voice though. The instrumental was alright, nothing special in my opinion. I also feel that at several points throughout the song the singer was having to raise their voice to be heard over the music and I’m someone who believes that the music shouldn’t overpower the singer too much. The outro where the music fades away was a very satisfying ending to the song.
There wasn’t much variation as the song progressed.
April 1st, 2020, 07:37 PM
11th Place - Lord Quas
The intro was deceptively calming. I liked the background music aside from a sound that was similar to sandpaper in my opinion. The singer(s)? have such lovely voices and they were rather drowned out at times. This isn’t really something I would voluntarily listen to again.
April 1st, 2020, 07:34 PM
12th Place - Jalandh and Shubaku17
The message of this song is certainly one I can get behind, but the music and singing itself is a bit too rough for my taste.
April 1st, 2020, 07:28 PM
13th Place - Owner of a Lonely Heart
The beat of the song is good. The singing is not imo. Sounds more like they are screaming the lyrics when they get really into it.
April 1st, 2020, 07:24 PM
14th Place - iaafr
This isn’t really what I expected to get in a foreign language sub but it still counts. I can’t really put my finger on why I’m so inclined to dislike this song, but I just do. It’s not my type of music at all.
April 1st, 2020, 07:17 PM
15th Place - Visorslash
I like the calming feel of this song even if I don’t necessarily like the actual music. There is a certain sound at the beginning that just rubs me the wrong way, I don’t know how I’d describe it.
April 1st, 2020, 07:14 PM
16th Place - Silmarils
There’s not much else I can say for this one. I like being able to hear actual instruments and the electronic kind of music just doesn’t do that for me.
April 1st, 2020, 07:10 PM
17th Place - Silmarils
The annoyingly high pitched notes in the intro kind of set the tone of the whole song for me. I’m sorry, but this type of music isn’t something that I could ever see myself enjoying.
April 1st, 2020, 07:05 PM
Alright, reveals for the foreign language cat are now commencing.
In last (18th) place, shocking nobody I'm sure, is Puns Ltd.
I honestly should not have expected anything else from puns ltd. This song is just… there are no words. No english words at least.

Hey guys! Just a friendly reminder that the deadline for subs is in three days (the 31st). As I need to get reveals finished before the bastard mash begins, I can't accept them any later than that. If you no longer want to participate that's also fine by me, just please let me know.

you're the one reading into the order

well that's the whole point of this! I'm looking to branch out, so feel free to send me your songs. Within reason

If you guys are looking for a bit of mayhem, you're in the right place. This walrus will be slightly unusual in that the judge is deaf and her music tastes are fairly obscure - we'll see how this goes!
A bit of background for those confused by the "deaf" comment: I am 100% deaf in both ears and use bilateral cochlear implants. Cochlear implants are not to be confused with hearing aids as hearing aids do not require surgical implantation. If anyone's more curious about this, feel free to ask questions. I don't bite
Now, if I use cochlear implants, how do I listen to music? Glad you asked! I got a cochlear implant update about a year ago and the fantastic thing about this model is that it has bluetooth capabilities - as in I can stream audio from my phone directly to my implants. The only downside is that I have not yet figured out how to make it work on my computer because it requires a specific app.
So, considering my unique circumstances, I do ask that all song submissions have lyrics that are relatively easy to look up. And are mobile friendly.
Enough rambling, let's get into the good stuff.
Since I am deaf, I have found it hard to expand my music tastes from what I am familiar with and used to. Therefore, I've decided that having a bunch of strangers on the internet sending me songs is the perfect way to expand my horizons. Nothing could possibly go wrong with that.
How To Submit
I'll take submissions through PM on here or on discord. My discord username is the same as my username here.
No alts will be accepted.
Because I am a benevolent host, and because I happen to be posting this the same day that Keldeo posted his sign ups (he said it was okay before you start coming at me), I'm making the submission deadline March 31st. The reveal will be roughly a week later. You have my permission to spam me with pings if I happen to take longer than that.
What I'll Accept
I'm not excluding anything because the whole point of this is to expose me to new types of music, so have at it. Within reason. No making all seven of your songs metal to troll me (looking at you Shad).
What I Currently Listen To
Acapella, Hamilton, country, folk music, etc
I told you my music tastes are weird. Don't judge me.
I want seven songs from each person submitting. You do not have to do one per category, just make it seven songs and I'll be happy. Why seven? It's my favorite number. Deadline is March 31st, no exceptions. Please make sure you tell me which song you are submitting to which category.
1. Foreign languages
Send me a song that is sung in any language other than English. If you can get some instruments in there that aren't usually in english songs please do.
2. Songs inspired by books
Stretch the interpretation of this one as much as you want. If you can justify it to me and have it make sense I'll take it. I'm a well known bibliophile so I just had to throw this in here. Oh, or songs that inspired books. I'll take that too.
3. Songs that make you want to cry
I'm in need of a good cry. Make it happen.
4. Folk Songs
Doesn't matter what culture or country it originates from. You're mafia players, get creative.
5. A song about a deep topic
I'm purposely making this one broad. Bonus points for triggering an existential crisis.
6. Songs about nature
Human nature or nature nature, take your pick. Ode to the West Wind comes to mind, even though that's a poem. Eh, it still fits the category.
7. Free category
I might regret having a free category but here you go. The one stipulation is that you're only allowed to have one song in your submission be in the free category.
I'll rank the songs in each category and whichever song got last place will get 1 point, with 1 pt increases for each increase in rank up until the top song.

2. nutella (subbed)
4. LordQuas (subbed)

Also, if you feel like a category might not get enough interest and want to recommend a different one feel free.
A note to anyone playing in the mash: reveals will be over before the mash starts.
