    elliot smith - xo

    8.5/10

always fun to get rec'd one of my favorite artists, lol

thanks to ladd for giving me a pulpit to talk about how much i love Elliott Smith

gonna talk about some of my favs on this one

sweet adeline - Smith has a lot of songs about breakups and using self-medication to cope with emotional distress, and this is definitely one of them. being "deaf and dumb and done" the terminology for no longer being receptive to the ingoing and outgoing is a major theme of the album and fits the theme of the month perfectly

waltz #2 xo - so much to talk about here i'm gonna try to condense. Smith's upbringing comes up a lot in his songs - digesting the emotional, physical and sexual abuse at the hands of his stepfather - the first song that really impacted me from Smith's catalog was "roman candle" from 1994 which paints his anger at the situation ("he could be cool and cruel to you and me / knew we'd put up with anything") - waltz #2 sees Smith coping with his anger another way - offering undying love for his mother still suffering under the control of an abusive husband. the chorus of "i'm never going to know you now / but i'm gonna love you anyhow" offering this despite the amount of emotional armor and disconnect his mother has developed to protect herself from her living situation changing her into someone Smith will never "truly" know. of the songs Smith has written about his abuse or loving despite trauma, it's no surprise this one has endured as one of his opuses

baby britian - a triumphant ode to the founding of america, a nation anthropomorphised as a drunken idiot hollering "crimson and clover" ad nauseum, going headfirst into promises and odes of devotion despite having no idea what its getting into. don't trust the promises of an idiot - "the light was on, but it was dim"

pitseleh - a song, for all intents and purposes, about self-loathing and letting someone down. Smith cracks a joke about his ever-present l'appel du vide ("i got a joke I've been dying to tell you / a silent kid is looking down the barrel / to make the noise") to quote bo burham - ha ha ha, classic comedy! this is one of my most listened to Smith songs, haunting and drippingly sincere. the culmination of his drug addiction to cope with the abuse of his childhood on full display even if not directly mentioned - "they say that god makes problems just to see what you can stand / before you do as the devil pleases". if that aint the blues i dont know what is

i don't have too much to say about the album from "independence day" to "a question mark" - while i like most of these songs, Elliott Smith's transition from the more subdued singer-songwriter compositions that colored his early career to the more beatles-y chamber pop of "figure 8" is sort of documented as elliott plays with big crescendos and louder electric instrumentation - consistent and good but lacking the punishing highlights Smith's music can offer. he'd achieve mastery of this by "figure 8", but not quite yet here. of this section my favorites are independence day (which would have fit perfectly on figure 8) and another dose of breakups and self-loathing in waltz #1 (which would have fit perfectly on his previous LP either/or).

everybody cares, everybody understands - supposedly inspired by a failed drug intervention, they want Smith to go to rehab but he says no, no, no. from a diminished state it can seem so easy and so worthless for well-wishers to decide they can fix your life with a couple simple steps that will erase all the events that brought you here... and Smith responds to this "synthetic sympathy" with venom - "you say you mean well, you don't know what you mean, $%#!ing oughta stay the hell away from things you know nothing about" - Smith is able to tie together his punishing singer-songwriter repertoire with a powerful instrumental crescendo that delivers a levelling emotional climax leading into...

i didn't understand - the denouement to everybody cares, Smith remains the same while the world revolves around him (there's nothing here that you'll miss / i can guarantee you this is a cloud of smoke / trying to occupy space / what a $%#!ing joke). this song ends with a particularly heartbreaking excerpt from a doomed relationship:

You once talked to me about love
    And you painted pictures of
    A Never Never Land
And I could've gone to that place
    But I didn't understand

i could probably ramble about this lyric for hours, but the contrast here between the fantasy land implied in his lovers offering - one where nothing will change, and happiness will be eternal - is something Smith simply doesn't get. Smith's dour painting of Neverland - not the only peter pan reference is his catalog - feels all the more tragic knowing why Smith can't comprehened the idea of eternal happiness & the innocence of children being children, free and unrestricted by societal demands after the abuse he suffered as a child. were you expecting a happy ending here?

@ladd ty bud, had a nice nostalgia kick

Past impressions can be hard to shake, and it can feel unfair to be measured by them, especially when you feel you've made a lot of personal progress & adapted better to your environment

This can be a good learning experience re: your comment about Phighter about his actions from a game that was some time ago. People change & adapt, you yourself seem committed to continuing your personal development, so being cognizant of others doing the same rather than making judgments that you would feel hurtful if someone did to you can go a long way

Of all the paragraphs I have ever read on the...

Head coach Jon Gruden held an emotional team meeting in Oakland this week concerning the brewing quarterback controversy between the veteran Derek Carr and very good-looking rookie Ayron Hubbard. The meeting was “intense” and “at one point H'Ardclaim Noot was crying” but everyone grew closer and a big lesson was learned. Hubbard was named the starter of the Oakland Raiders, and in a touching ceremony was knighted as an official Gruden Grinder. Carr's future with Oakland is uncertain at this point; team sources say he's downloaded every Sufjan Stevens album, and is often seen with headphones, in the locker room, wearing several hats, crying, huddled on the floor, pathetically. Another source said that Carr left practice to "have a suf session" after Gruden called him "David" three times in a six-minute span.

When Newcomb subbed in a bit after Start of D4, he did so in a lost game. Town was one mislynch away from LYLO, and they were absolutely divided with no cohesion whatsoever. It was a cakewalk for the wolves. On Newcomb's first post, he dropped a reads list that had a game-winning POE despite the town's handicap. Over the next twelve hours he managed to cobble together a functioning town core for the first time all game and took the lead in correctly sniffing out the entire team without a single mistake. I have never seen the win probability in a game change that greatly, that quickly.

Two correct lynches together and the last wolf had no hope of ever winning, having to concede. The game literally turned around upon Newcomb's sub-in.
    Seconded on both
