Whew, snuck into the playoffs! That in and of itself is a big milestone. Though it also warms the heart to see the Patriots do so poorly.

Anywho, here are my thoughts on the actual chunk we're doing this week.

Eden Prime: For a tutorial section, it's pretty good. On replays the feeling of just wanting to get it over with is still there, but not quite as much as in other games, and it has some good level design (level design is a big complaint for me in Mass Effect, as I've said, but I'll still hold off for now), so I do actually enjoy it. Nice that the guy that bites it right at the start is a reference to Leroy Jenkins. Not much else to comment on really on the main story, other than overall it grew on me more each time I played it. The first few times I felt it was kinda obvious Saren was going to be a bad guy, but I guess the more I thought about it the more I could relate to the fact that he used to be a well respected spectre and the fact that he's a baddie is a complete and utter surprise to everyone not on Shepard's team, goes for both the council and Nihlus.

Yeah, don't sweat the pic. I think ME1 was just rough around the edges like I said with the lighting and other things. Fun fact too: The reason so many conversations end with that awkward saunter off to one side of the screen for the NPC you're talking to is because Bioware literally wanted to try to replicated the "exit, stage left" effect of stage plays, which... well... I'll admit, has a certain charm to it so I won't knock it too hard, but at the same time is indeed awkward and I'm glad they moved away from it later.

Anywho, I guess that's a good prompting to actually talk about backgrounds. I whole heartily agree with what you said, but I do have to say there's also a certain charm to the navy being a "family business" so to speak, at least for me. Yes, it's cliche, and very widespread in other media, but what can I say, I'm a sucker for space navies and a good officer class (if only for the trope, not the implications), so it just resonates with me. I agree though, Shepard works better as someone who's had to face tough challenges though.

For the record on my characters, Jack was Earthborn (played as sort of someone who's the poster child for being self-made and coming from no where), Alexis was Spacer (where the by the book came from, I guess), and Natalie was Colonist.

(This was all in response to GH but I see everyone suddenly got active surprisingly )

Indeed, this is what I get for saving all my hard drives since 2006. Behold, the blond Dominic Keating (micro rant, the lighting in ME1 was terrible, but I guess they were going for kind of a film vibe, so *maybe* it's excusable.

Gaming I guess I'll take this opportunity to introduce...

I guess I'll take this opportunity to introduce the three characters/playthroughs that gave me most of my experience with the main Mass Effect line. I put focus on them because they were developed at a time I was first getting into RPGs and I've carried the three forward as kind of my "archtypes" that I build off of when playing other games, even tabletops which I've sense gotten into. I'll try and be as spoiler free as possible when describing them.

    Run One: Jack Shepard

I'll fully admit, this one was my first and was based off myself, but that's not necessarily a bad thing IMO. Sometimes it can be good to play through a game just as yourself, especially a series that offers as many choices as Mass Effect, and it's a good way to prevent yourself from being overwhelmed on first introduction to a game. Tried to make him look like myself but unfortunately came out looking like a blond Dominic Keating. (I may or may not have a picture still floating around somewhere that I'll try and find... maybe)

I played the game trying to "do the right thing", which unsurprisingly got me mostly paragon points. Not maxed, but that's okay. And I don't want to make it seem like I'm some paragon of virtue IRL, just that either through perseverance or game design, sticking to your principles is A-okay in this game. There were some low points, but I'll hit on those when the time comes (though the one I'm thinking of is in ME2, so it may be awhile).

    Run Two: Alexis Shepard

With such a big game, I almost immediately started a second playthrough after my first, intending to much the opposite of what I'd done before, IE a Renegade playthrough since I'd been Paragon, and femshep to see if anything noteworthy changed (and I'm always down for different romance options, though ME1 was sadly lacking in how many possible options there were). Alexis looks like the default ME2/3 femshep (IE redhead), but IIRC that wasn't the look in ME1 and they changed it between games, so it wasn't just me being uncreative.

Unfortunately (or fortunately???), I kind of missed my mark. Instead of playing Renegade, I played "mission at any cost, but by the book if it doesn't get in the way", which I guess was my primitive interpretation of the opposite of what I'd just done as Jack Shepard. By the end of ME1, Alexis was pure neutral on the alignment axis. This was quite the interesting development, and I decided to consider the playthrough a success, even if it wasn't what I was going for. That did however, lead to take three...

Also Alexis failed to romance anyone, a trend which would continue through all three games, though not always for lack of trying... It was definitely a unique perspective, and kinda fitting given her "personality".

    Run Three: Natalie Shepard

This time I did manage to pull off an actual Renegade playthrough, attempting to go for the more traditional RPG archtype of someone who's a little axe-crazy. Femshep again because the run was technically a take two of Alexis. Natalie looks a bit like the new Lara Croft. Mass Effect doesn't actually let you play someone who's straight up axe crazy though, which I actually think is a good thing, as while there's still plenty of latitude, it keeps you within the believable spectrum of a military officer in the given situation, albeit one with increased privileges later on. Not much more to say specifically about her right now.

I will also say I did diversify the background choices and class selections for each run too, but I don't feel as if talking about that is as important right now either.

A frustrating series of results where it seems like performance could be better. I know a lot of people don't like it, but I'd like to see the "team talk" feature from FM and just lay into the players telling them to get good.

I guess at least NIU was close. Obstinately NIU is sort of a pseudo-rival to the school I went to (not in football terms), so a good showing would have been nice, but if they're that good, I guess what can you do.
