I'll sub in the next few days
The Song of the Golden Dragon · Estas Tonne
When you put this on, your friend: closes his eyes, risking a crash, and starts jamming out to it, air acoustic guitar style
Damn, this is hypnotic in the best way. That is some sick finger picking too. It's almost got like a Rodrigo y Gabriella thing going on where you can feel both Irish and Spanish influences. This also reminds me of the desert song in Ocarina of Time. I feel like this is pandering almost but I'm not docking for it. Sick sub bruah.
Crumb - Locket
When you put this on, your friend: looks impressed, vibes with it
Oh yeah. Crumb is exactly what I was thinking of when I thought of this cat; kind of under the radar overall but well known as quality in some circles. I wish you'd subbed a slightly deeper cut, I know this one really well. I'm not gonna ding you for it though I love this song.
Ralph - GIMME
When you put this on, your friend: gives you a thumbs up and turns it up
Alright fine you got me. Blatant pander, but I'll take it. This kind of pure fluff pop banger with a kickin' bassline is my kryptonite. Not a slam dunk type of sub because a lot of stuff that sounds similar to this falls flat, but this has that kind of self-awareness with lines like "i've been so patient so give it to me" make this gold. I really want to put the top down and blast this on a drive through the hollywood hills. $%#! I really wanted to put this 1st but I can't quite pull the trigger.
Everything Everything - SUPERNORMAL
When you put this on, your friend: does that face from the gif of American Psycho where he's like, ooo, nice.
This grabs you right off the bat and sticks you directly in its pocket. I was singing "goddamn right" along with the chorus by the end.
Side note, the video for this is genuinely terrifying, in a hypnotic way.
セクト 歌ってみた－遊 - mah
When you put this on, your friend: Gives you a look like he doesn't quite trust you but then he's into it
Huh. I gotta hand it to this song, I was prepared to hate it because it sounds kinda weeb-y out of the gate, but it's tense and a little funky and the vocals actually kinda work for me? I really like how the bassline anchors the more floaty synth sounds. Yeah I gotta say this is pretty legit. See, I don't just automatically hate weeb stuff.
Lesley Gore on the Tami Show (Instrumental) - Casiotone for the Painfully Alone
When you put this on, your friend: realizes he's been tapping out the synth line on the steering wheel after it's been on for a minute
Listening to this for the first time and it's like, yeah, ok. That backbeat really sells it. Cool voice, too. Bit understated. Good cat fit too, I can imagine putting this on in a car and people kind of gradually realizing they like it. I think what keeps it from like, 8+ territory is that extra kick I wish it went to, like I wish it had a section where it expanded and went a little harder or had a cool break or something. Enjoyable for what it is though.
Perfect Fit - Clues
When you put this on, your friend: Is puzzled, but intrigued
That piano's kind of fun, in a meme-y way. Catchy. Kind of like a less abrasive The Dead Science. I like how it keeps developing and keeping you interested by going in another direction. Fun song.
Frances Quinlan - Went to LA
When you put this on, your friend: nods along, looks pensive
She's got a cool voice. When she lets it go in the end there it's pretty powerful. The droning kind of plodding guitar and instrumental backing is decent, fits the song well. It faded really fast, I found I couldn't really remember much of all of it after it ended. That's not always a bad thing. Mostly hangs on the power of her voice and if you like that you'll like the song.
STARCHILD - yameii
When you put this on, your friend: would close his eyes if he could, groove to it, sway that head back and forth
Yeah yeah yeah okay I dig it. I wish the bass were a little cleaner and the percussion were a little more dynamic, but for a meme-y song I actually quite like it. That echo-y second half gets a little old.
Dirty Projectors - About To Die
When you put this on, your friend: raises his eyebrows and gives you an evaluating nod
Hmm, this is quirky. I think it's a solid cat fit, insofar as that it's not like immediately a banger but it kind of grows on you and it's a song you'd want to share with someone. I think it's kind of bordering on annoying but I end up on the side of liking it? It never completely sold me but I came back to it a few times and enjoyed it.
Nice Men In Stable Relationships - Matmos
When you put this on, your friend: makes a kind of "huh" face and keeps tilting his head
Man idk about this one. It's weird but kinda cool. Seems more like something you'd sub to MP7 but I applaud the moon shot. I'm gonna give this like a slightly above average score but my enjoyment of it varied really wildly depending on my mood when I listened. I guess in the end I'll save this and come back to it and see if it grows on me over time.
Cameron Graves - Super Universes
When you put this on, your friend: gives you a look like they're about to get a splitting headache
This definitely demands attention in a good way. That piano is so driving, if you can get into the right mindset and let it sweep you up it's pretty good, and then that little lifting run and arpeggio thing it builds up to is solid. I wish the drums weren't so cookie cutter; on songs like this I'm always paying close attention to the percussion and looking for creativity and stuff that surprises me, but this is pretty basic, if bombastic.
Madrugada - Majesty (live)
When you put this on, your friend: talks over it, but then asks who it was when it's over
Hmm, yeah I guess? Didn't do a lot for me on first listen, but it grew on me. It has a nice cadence to it. Not something I'd really listen to on my own, but it's almost soothing or something.
Chelou - Not The Man I Thought
When you put this on, your friend: taps his hand on the steering wheel and stares out the window pensively
The lyrical line is definitely catchy. I wish the backing instrumentation was a little more dynamic. This is one of those songs where if I don't listen to the lyrics too closely it's more enjoyable; the times when I paid attention to the lyrics they annoyed me with their triteness.
They Might Be Giants - Ana Ng
When you put this on, your friend: Hums along, but kind of distractedly
It's TMBG. And it's not Dr. Worm. So idk. I have to be in a really specific mood to appreciate They Might Be Giants. Mostly because a lot of the charm is in the lyrics and it's pretty unusual for me to pay attention to those. I didn't really get into that space with this specific song. It's catchy enough I suppose.
Shriekback - Nemesis
When you put this on, your friend: taps out the beat on the steering wheel, but starts talking about something else
It's catchy, and I surprisingly don't hate the vocals, it just feels too dated to really connect with. That super high pitched vocal echo in the background actually kinda works. Idk I don't hate this? It's pretty far outside my wheelhouse and I'm not really drawn in to pay super close attention to it.
BAD APPLE!! || METAL COVER by RichaadEB ft. Cristina Vee
When you put this one, your friend: starts headbanging while keeping his eyes on the road, then gives you a look of black disappointment when the lyrics kick in
lmao holy $%#!. The beginning of this is $%#!ing awesome. Like yeah it's hella cheesy and cookie cutter but if you like this kind of video game-y rock at all (I do) it really works, like you just go along with it. And then the vocals kick in looool. Not sure I've ever noped out of a song so fast. Someday y'all are gonna learn to not sub $%#! with vocals; at the very least I have to be able to ignore them. These are SO SO bad and the lyrics are SO SO stupid that I just can't. Without vocals this is like an 8. The vocals are like a negative 5. So I guess that averages out to like a 4. Sure.
Heir of Grief · TenseiMusic
When you put this on, your friend: doesn't really seem to react to it
Idk why people are subbing stuff like this to me? Did my cat give off some kind of cookie-cutter rock vibe? The orchestral elements are okay but this all just sounds super generic to me, like I've heard every part of it a hundred times before.
Marble Sounds - The Ins and Outs
When you puts this on, your friend: squints at you like the Inception leo decaprio meme
Ehh. Those vocals are super cheesy that's gonna be a no from me dawg. If I ignore the vocals the background could be kinda cool in a triumphant anthem kind of way, but it would need something very cool over the top.
*note - video had been removed when I got to it, I found the song I think this was. If this wasn't your sub I'll redo it
Psychoville - Revoker
When you put this on, your friend: makes an angry badger face
Nope. Not even a little bit.
Hey you got a get out of jail free card though if this wasn't what you submitted.
Basically, I was looking for songs that you really believe in the quality of, that aren't necessarily super easy to appreciate right off the bat.
gonna switch it up and try TV shows -
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
A Knight's Tale
Robin Hood Prince of Thieves
Are these all separate cats?
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Mr. Right (there are probably more movies than 1 named this, i'm thinking of the one where Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick throw knives at each other)
Star Trek Generations
Star Trek Insurrection
maybe for a final tiebreaker, one submission, lowest imdb score wins
Bill & Ted face the music
tv shows seem intrinsically harder to nail down
alright, straight down the middle of the road:
Friends With Benefits
Still enjoyed it though, thanks for the rec. That lead actor has some decent charisma for a (presumably) early 20's guy.
