Mechanics Update
Everything should be fixed now and iaafr will be the only one dying to poison at the end of today!!
I've set it to not flip alignments just in case, though, so the reveal will be manual just for today!
Night 1 Stuff
The real poison was on iaafr!! He is currently real poisoned and will die at the end of today!!!
Unfortunately, there were issues when fake poison testing came up, and a ton of people had their submission carry through or something!! Makaze is looking at it and a solution will be found before EoD; in the meantime, please continue playing normally!! For all the other people who were announced as poisoned but are not iaafr, you do not have to worry about dying at EoD as we'll make sure that doesn't happen!!
There will be another announcement about this before EoD, hopefully sooner than later but it depends on stuff getting figured out!!!!
Please note that mafia currently have the ability to poison themselves (for some reason), so do not read into the alignments of the people who were poisoned since they can be either alignment!!!
Will be back shortly, looking into this!!
My apologies!!!
For at least a couple years, yeah!!!
Not sure when that stopped, thought that was always there!!
As we're moving into night 1, I'll be posting some optional discussion questions in all mentor/mentee chats which you can use to talk about stuff!!!
Mentees:
~ What are you struggling with and what do you want to work on improving going forward, based on your posts so far/how day 1 went?
~ Is there anything you want to do more/less of going forward?
If you can't think of anything to discuss, I suggest asking your mentor more questions or even just talking about your posts/play and going from there - the mentees that get the most out of these games tend to be the mentees that ask the most questions!!
Mentors:
~ What advice do you have for your mentee based on their play so far?
~ Are there any strategies/ways of approaching this part of the game which you would recommend to your mentee going forward?
If you can't think of anything to discuss, I suggest asking your mentee questions about their posts/thoughts/anything they're doing, or just talking about any strategy that you think is helpful!!!
@Hally Are you making it possible to vote more than once in categories with 10+ nominations again?
There are too many good ones in funniest/most memorable moment!!!!![]()
Heads up @illario has requested to be removed from best town, so if anyone submitted their ballot with him already, feel free to resubmit!!
Mechanical UpdateAlthough a fake poison was added to the factional poison action, the mafia have been instructed not to use the fake poison, so there will only be real poisons in this game!!!
In short: clarifying that there is no change from the OP!!

Was going to do that for Best Fakeclaim, except I only saw it already was after I wrote it up!!!
Both, though!!
Nominating PERFECT FAKECLAIMS LIKE INVESTIGATIVE for Best Meme
In anni 2023, in the OP it was announced that mafia had many fake claims - regardless of how almost none of them were used!! To set the scene in lategame, Naoto Shirogane had claimed investigative, hadn't been in the thread for nearly two hours, and it was almost EoD!!! 7 seconds before EoD, they pop in with a vote, changing the day's result to kill a villager:
While many (the graveyard) might consider such a vote to be outing, the remaining living town did have 45,000+ posts to consider and ended up passing it over!!! Anyways, we come to day 7 where at the end of the day the mafia only needed to kill one more town!! Admittedly there was a larger wagon on a villager, but Naoto came in again with 7 seconds left until EoD (pretty much just for the memes at this point):
Graveyard went absolutely wild at that point:
I mean the wolves basically received PERFECT FAKECLAIMS LIKE INVESTIGATIVE WHICH ALLOWS THEM TO SKIP PAST 4 DAYPHASES
I would like to add this to the nomination of AM reviving too many times:
![]()
Nominating dota/lol being the same person as Funniest/Most Memorable Moment!
While many people have gotten dota and lol confused for each other, that hadn't yet had game-altering consequences... until this moment!!!!
Amusement ensues:
Nominating Midnight Mash for Best Mash!
A very hype game, not only with phases being the opposite of the usual, but alignments as well - opposite phases was a very nice change to have from the normal!!! The flavour was wonderful, and there was a lot of solid play from both sides!!! Mafia play in particular, with the usage of PRs/general mafia cohesion, but also town made some very strategic plays that would likely have seen the game go on for quite a while!! Fun events as well, just an overall rather hype time!!!
Nominating the GIF/QUOTE Media games for Best Setup/Mechanic!
I'll just quote the concept here:
- Players will only be allowed to post in GIFs and direct quotes from the TV-show or Movie of their choice!
- You may edit direct quotes from your chosen media for purposes of identifying information
- Please don't abuse this by quoting non-significant dialogue.
Very hype concept, lots of funny hype!!!!
Games were here and here!!
Nominating Grug for Best Gimmick!!!
G r u g G r u g G r u g G r u g G r u g G r u g G r u g G r u g
How has this not been done yet!!!
JOAT 10ers have been played before ths year, just saying!!

Secondng Hally for best replacement player!!
Probably not going to do a whole ton of these, didn't have much prepared anyway!!!
Let's see, though...
Everyone should be connected with their mentors by now!! Good luck have fun!!!
Reminder not to talk about anything you've discussed in your mentor chat in the game thread, especially your mentor's identity/speculation on other mentor identities!! For example, you can't say "my mentor said this"; for all intents and purposes, the thoughts you express in the game thread should be coming from you regardless!!

FAQ
Are you unsure about how actions are processed or how roles interact with each other? Then read more here:
ORDER OF OPERATIONS
Actions which modify other actions are processed before the actions they modify. When actions would modify each other in a inter-dependent dependency cycle, they are processed in the following order:
Passives (e.g. Ninja, Strongman)
Empowers
Redirects
Roleblocks
Jails
Doctors
Bodyguards
Kills
Investigations
Backups
The order in which an action was submitted during the night will not impact the order in which the actions are processed.
ACTION FEEDBACK
These are the results you will get when you submit certain actions.
Non-investigative actions that do not gain anything from their actions do not get feedback of any kind.
Players will not be informed if their action was blocked or redirected. Actions with reports (e.g. Alignment Cops) will show the target they ended the Night on in the report and tell them if it failed, but not why or how, as shown below.
Investigative actions return results even if the target dies on the same night.
Actions that count as visits are counted as visits even if the actor dies on the same night.
Investigative roles (Tracker, Cop, etc.) when roleblocked:
Trackers when tracking a person that didn't visit anyone (or if they targeted a Ninja):
Watchers when watching a person that wasn't visited by anyone (or only visited by a Ninja):
Alignment Cop when investigating a town-aligned player (or a Godfather):
Watcher when watching a person that was visited by multiple people:
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I submit my action?
Use the form below the game thread. If your role has a night action, the form will only be visible during night phases. It's not possible to submit actions in advance of the night phase.
What does it mean if Mafia kills are assigned?
Assigned kills means the member of the mafia team that submitted the last factional night kill target for the Night will be the one assigned to carry out the kill. Since the kill is being carried out by a specific person, the kill can be blocked or modified by other actions. Assigned kills can seen by other roles such as Trackers and Watchers. If the kill is set to mandatory and the Mafia do not submit a kill in time, then the assigned killer is chosen at random.
If assigned kills are not turned on, then the Mafia factional kill cannot be blocked, modified or seen by any actions and has no particular person assigned to do it, even if there is only one of their players left.
Where do I find example role PM's?
This thread contains example role PM's for all roles currently supported by the Modbot as well as information on the various modifiers. Here you will find the answers to a lot of questions not covered in this FAQ section.
Which roles can self-target / target themselves?
All roles have the option to go with or without the Self-targetable modifier. Watchers are typically marked as Self-targetable (and will be suggested to the host by the system). Everyone else usually does not not have this ability. This is not a guarantee that your host applied them that way in your specific game.
Which roles are not able to target the same players on consecutive Nights?
All roles have the option to go with or without the Non-consecutive modifier. Doctors, Jailkeepers, Roleblockers, Empowers and Redirects are roles that are typically marked as Non-consecutive (and will be suggested to the host by the system). Everyone else usually does not not have this restriction, including Bodyguards. This is not a guarantee that your host applied them that way in your specific game.
Note that this Non-consecutive restriction applies to what you submit. You will not be able to submit the same player the next Night even if you failed or ended up on another target in the end. You may end still up on the same player if other actions force you to violate a targeting restriction.
Will I be told be told if my action was blocked or redirected?
No. Players will not be informed if their action was blocked or redirected. Actions with reports (e.g. Alignment Cops) will show the target they ended the Night on in the report and tell them if it failed, but not why or how.
What happens if 2+ of the same Blocking roles (e.g. Jailkeepers) target each other in a dependency cycle?
In the case of a cycle of only Jailkeepers, they will block actions lower in the order than their Jail and protect each other. In the case of only Roleblockers, they will block actions lower than Roleblock in the order. This means that the players are still trackable to each other that night by Trackers and Watchers. It also means that if one of them is Mafia and happens to simultaneously be the one submitting the factional kill that night in a game with assigned mafia kills, then the kill, and any other actions lower in the order, are blocked. This same principle applies to longer loops. I.e. in a A > B > C > D > A loop, everyone is blocked.
What happens if 2+ Redirectors try to redirect each other?
Redirection actions only affect single-target actions, so there is no dependency. They will successfully redirect any single-target actions the other has, including any assigned factional kills.
What happens if 2+ Manipulatives with different action types (e.g. a Roleblocker and a Jailkeeper) target each other in a dependency cycle?
Refer to the order of operations for dependency cycles. e.g. Roleblocks process before Jailkeepers.
What happens if a power lower in the order is the first one in a line? e.g. Jailkeeper A jails Roleblocker B who roleblocks Roleblocker C?
The order only matters when the actions are inter-dependent in a complete cycle. Since Jailkeeper A's action is not being modified, their action is processed first. That makes B's Roleblock fail. If there is no other modification, then C's actions will succeed.
If an X-Shot role is blocked while using one of its shots, do they lose that shot forever?
Yes. A 1-shot Vigilante being blocked while attempting to kill someone will not have their shot refunded.
What happens if a Strongman kills someone who is protected by a Bodyguard?
Strongman ignores the Bodyguard completely and kills the original person as if there was no interference.
Can a mafia team choose not to kill anyone during a night?
The host can determine this using the Mafia Factional Kill setting. Kills can be mandatory, optional, or disabled altogether.
The default is Mandatory. If the mafia do not submit a target for their kill, then someone will be chosen at random from among the players not on their team. Hosts tend to do this in order to avoid deadlocked games where the town keeps no eliminating and the mafia refuses to submit a kill. If the game has assigned kills and they do not submi, it will randomize which member of the team is carrying out the kill.
If there is only one mafia member left in a game without assigned kills, can the mafia factional kill then be blocked and/or tracked?
No. The kill is not assigned no matter how many players are there to carry out the kill.
Can the mafia submit a kill for one of their own members?
Not using the factional kill.
If I kill someone, does their night action, if they have one, still succeed?
Yes. Killing someone doesn't prevent them from performing their night action. Refer to the order of operations. All kills happen at the end of the night, and everyone pulls the trigger simultaneously.
Can individual mafia members actions be submitted by their teammates?
No. If the mafia team want to use a role's action, then the player occupying that slot must submit the action themselves.
If a Lover is shot during the night, while the other Lover is protected that night, does the other Lover still die?
Yes. Nothing can prevent a Lover from dying of Lovesickness.
If a Bodyguard protects Lover A, while Lover B is shot during that same night, what happens?
Lovesickness is not processed as a kill, and cannot be gaurded against. Lover A dies of Lovesickness and the Bodyguard lives.
If there are any Innocent Childs in the game, are these confirmed in the thread right when the game begins?
No. Innocent Children are able to decide themselves when or if they wish to have the Mafia Host confirm their role and alignment in the thread. Note that this is exclusively a Day action and that it can take up to one minute to process the action.
What results are Alignment Cops, Full Cops and Role Cops given if they investigate a Godfather or a Miller?
Alignment Cops are told "Town" for Godfathers and "Mafia" for Millers. Full Cops are told "Vanilla Town" for Godfathers and "Mafia Goon" for Millers. Role Cops the exception: They are told "Godfather" for Godfathers and "Miller" for Millers.
Can Role Cops tell the difference between a Vanilla Town and Mafia Goon?
No. They are told "Vanilla" when investigating either of these two roles.
If I roleblock someone with a Bulletproof Vest, will that nullify the effect of the vest?
No. Bulletproof Vests are passive items that cannot be blocked.
If I roleblock Masons, Neighbors or Lovers with out of thread communication privileges, can I prevent them from talking at night?
No. Talking in a private thread is not considered an action that can be blocked.
If I roleblock a Godfather or Miller, will they still be revealed as being town-aligned to Alignment Cops and Full Cops that night?
Yes. Passive roles are not treated as actions and cannot fail.

OTHER SPECIAL FEATURES
VIEWING VOTE HISTORY
There are three ways to access the vote history for any game.
- Click on the "Vote History" button in the top right corner of the game thread:
- Click on the "View Vote History" link, which accompanies all votecounts:
- Click on Modbot in the top forum menu. This will give you a list of ongoing and completed games:
Next, simply click on "Vote History" to view all votes for that game.
Following any of the above three steps will bring you to an overview like this one:
Click on a Voter's username to view all of the votes by their slot.
Click on a Target's username to view all of the votes for their slot.
ISOLATING A PLAYER'S POSTS
If you wish to read a player's posts in isolation, simply click on "ISO" in the top right corner of one of that player's posts in the relevant thread as illustrated here:
Alternatively, you can access a player's posts in isolation by clicking on the number next to "Replies:" in the forum lobby.
Doing so will pull up a window listing the post counts for everyone who has posted in that thread. You access someone's posts in isolation by simply clicking on the number next to "Posts:" for that person.
The ISO view itself has Quote and Multi-Quote buttons inside it, which will make it very easy to quickly quote a lot of a player's posts for analysis or commentary:
MULTI-ISOLATING
If you wish to read not just one player's posts, but you want to ISO multiple players, then click the "Multi ISO" button to the left of "Game Tools" and select the players in question as shown here:
MULTI-QUOTING WHILE THREAD IS LOCKED
Note that you can multi-quote posts from even locked game threads. This is useful for when you wish to reread the game and do work during night phases.
After quoting the relevant posts, you simply open a different, opened thread and press "Go Advanced". Then add the quotes to your post by clicking the prompt below the post area as shown here:
Now, of course you can't post your work in the game thread while the thread is locked, but you can copy paste and save your work to a local file or the cloud and have it ready to post the very next day phase (if you're still alive, that is).
BOOKMARKS
Whenever you open a game thread, you are able to bookmark posts. This is for many players an important tool for keeping track of and remembering vital pieces of information, reads, claims etc.
Also, note that these bookmarks are saved to your user account, meaning that it eliminates the trouble associated with keeping notes between different computers/devices.
If you want to bookmark a post, you simply scroll to the post that you want to bookmark and press "Set Bookmark" as shown here:
This will call up 5 different colored icons (Blue, Red, Yellow, Green, and Black) on the right side of the post in question. You can click any of these icons, which will then prompt you to include a note for the post.
If you don't want to include a note, you don't have to - just leave it blank. The color coding in itself can be a valuable tool. Maybe you want to use Red bookmarks for posts that you find suspicious, Green bookmarks for posts that you find townie, Black bookmarks for posts containing claims, or whatever system you can think of that will be helpful to you.
Once this is done, you have now successfully bookmarked a post with a certain color and maybe even a note. If you wish to remove the bookmark again, click on "Unset Bookmark".
How do I access bookmarks?
There are two ways to access your bookmarks.
- Inside a game thread, you can access the bookmarks for that specific game by simply right clicking on the "Bookmark" button and opening the link.
This will bring you to a separate page that is automatically filtered to only show bookmarks from the game thread that you accessed the page from.- You can also access your bookmarks by going to Features in the site's top menu:
This will bring you to a page where no bookmarks are shown by default. However, you have several filtering options.
You can filter by Game, by Player and by Color - and all of them at once if you so wish.
Here's an example of filtering by only red bookmarks in one specific game:
If you want to be taken directly to one of your bookmarked posts, you just click the post number.
How do I quote bookmarks?
You can also multi-quote bookmarked posts by clicking the little "+" button seen above on the far right side of each bookmark.
Once you have multi-quoted all the bookmarked posts that you want to quote, you will then have to go to the game thread in which you wish to quote the bookmarked posts.
Here you have two ways of quoting the posts.
- Click on "Reply With Quote" on another post as shown here:
You will then probably want to delete the last post quoted in the reply box, but otherwise you should be good to go.- Or you can do the more smooth option and click the "Reply To Thread" button at the top and bottom of the game thread - as shown here:
By doing this you will open up a reply box containing only your multi-quoted bookmarked posts.
Mountainous Poison Mentor/mentee Shadowhydra game!
Something about a wall?Hosted By: @Arapocalypse and @DaveDob with @Garden Gnome providing flavour!
Start Date: January 30th, 2023
SoD/EoD: 5pm EST
Phase Lengths: 48/24
Night Chat: Mafia Only
Out of Thread Communication: Mafia Only, mentor/mentee private communication
Posting Requirement: 20 posts minimum, 150 post max to lift 1 hour before EoD - If you don't meet 20, we will pester/replace you depending on the circumstance!
Setup: Mountainous Poison 15er12 Vanilla Town mentees
(12 Town mentors)
3 Mafia Goons
(3 Mafia mentors)
Instead of a standard factional kill, each night mafia will have access to a factional poison action! This will poison one player each night so that at SoD the player is publicly announced that they are poisoned, and will die at EoD if not healed! With no healer, the poisoned player will always die at the following EoD, so they have one day of knowingly being poisoned!
This is a mentor/mentee game, ideal for newer/less experienced players to get some personal help throughout the game! The way this will work is that each town and mafia mentee will have their own mentor to help guide them in their personal thread/chat. You may discuss reads privately; however, mentors should not impose their reads on their mentees. Mentors should not be speculated, discussed or referred to in the main thread since all mentors will be assigned an alignment before rand. Please ask if you have any questions!
A few examples of previous mentor/mentee games and chats:
Previous mentor/mentee and reverse mentor/mentee games:
- Mentor/Mentee - Sandwich (April/May 2019)
- Reverse Mentor/Mentee (June 2019)
- Mentor/Mentee - Llamas (August 2020)
- Reverse Mentor/Mentee - Alpacas (October 2020)
Town mentor/mentee chats:
Mafia Mentor/mentee chats:
Most people prefer to use discord for their mentor/mentee chats so there's not many I can link here, but there's usually at least 1 person who wants to stick with a forum thread! Feel free to ask me if you're interested in seeing some of the discord chats, though!!
After the game ends (depending on the amount of interest) there will likely be some sort of mentor-fun game, details to be figured out afterwards!!
- Town wins when all threats to Town have been eliminated.
- Mafia factions win when they achieve Parity.
- Votes are automatically locked in at LYLO.
- Sleeping is enabled. Vote for Sleep to forgo an elimination that Day.
- Mafia factional poisons are mandatory. Mafia must submit a factional poison each night, or a player outside their faction will be chosen at random.
- Mafia factional poisons are assigned. They can be tracked, watched, or roleblocked.
- Mafia may communicate at any time.
- Tied votes will result in a player being eliminated at random from among the tied players.
Pinging to ensure you're still ready to play the game!!! Just letting me know you're good either here or through pming me works!!!
Heads up I'll be randing a little earlier than usual, somewhere around Saturday night/Sunday morning, with mentors being assigned right after rand so that you can check in with your mentor before the game starts!!
If you've talked to me about this game within the last few days or so, you can ignore this!

If you want to design a 17er setup feel free to, but you're right in that the logistical issues make it so that it's unlikely to be picked over the multiple smaller setups which have been suggested thus far!!
I've skimmed the other setups and will get into them in a bit more detail (probably) later, though one thing that does stand out is the focus on mafia hunting for PRs... that doesn't happen much when town PRs make it easy for them by claiming, which I recall was the issue with your last one as well!!!
Likewise!!!
/spec
No!!!
![]()
Ah okay yes, I see what you mean; misread it a little!!! That being said, I don't think that would necessarily make it overly complex if the mafia just get the strongman on the next night after the mafia guess!! For instance: 0 correct - An alive member of the mafia, selected by the mafia, will die the night after the mafia submit their guess!
A bit wordy, but I'd lean making the reward more immediate for the mafia!! Technically I wouldn't mind changing it to a factional dayvig instead, but don't think it really matters much given it's a strongman!!
Also yeah I see I missed you saying no guessing with 0-1 alive town PRs, makes sense!!!
Seems better, more aimed at specifically PR-claiming/recommends against guesses where they're not entirely confident about it!!! I'm assuming they aren't told which of their guesses are PRs, if not all their guesses were PRs?
For the night 1 guess, with 1/2 correct why does it stop an attack/give them an extra kill on night 3 specifically? Why not night 2?
Regarding night 2, what if there is only 1 PR left alive? Possible, with 2-3 deaths before night 2!!
We have currently (mostly) filled!!! That being said, if anyone does want to play who is newer/has not played in a mentor/mentee game before, let me know and we can figure something out!!
If you have signed up and have not filled out the mentee form, please do that!!!
There's also other things: if you're trying to aim the mechanic towards literally any claim/PR read, what about PR reads that are based on posts that are absent from the thread?
An example: reading into a person's lack of response to a PR claim/lack of response to mechanics discussion!!!
I suppose if you continue with allowing mafia to submit any post from their PR/vanilla read, then that would be fine; would still run into the above issue, though!!
Sure, but hints can be incredibly vague; what's to stop mafia from choosing pretty much any post from a town player and claiming it's hinting at them being vanilla town?
Here's just a few "hints" off the top of my head: references to the possibility of dying (ex. if I die this EoD then kill X, I might die this EoD, etc.), any reference to future plans (ex. I'll think about that tomorrow, that's a problem for the future, maybe a problem to consider in LYLO), or any post even vaguely referencing themself doing something later, etc.
All of the above could be construed as a vanilla town hint, but they also can be abused to pick many posts!!!
You also do not even have to pretend something is a hint, seeing as from what you said in the rules, the awarding of points is only calculated on whether the mafia were right or wrong about their guess!! What's stopping them from submitting any post from a town player and claiming it's a hint/claim?
That's how I would try to break it as mafia, anyway; free kp!!
What stops mafia from submitting a guess of vanilla town on every single member of the town on night 1 and automatically getting a dayvig day 2?
To clarify the last sentence: don't pm someone and ask them to mentor you in this game!!!! Just pm someone and ask them about mafia in general yourself, in that case!!!!!!!
The list of mentors will not be made public until the game has ended, so mentees can't request mentors because they don't know who the mentors are!!
Besides, if you're only interested in getting mentored by one person and no one else, you may have better luck talking to them and figuring something else out!!!
For what it's worth, lots of people who have signed up are not necessarily new players; while newer players tend to be more likely to sign up, "older" players can too!!!
The main thing is that if you are looking to improve in playing mafia and think you would benefit from having a mentor during a game, then feel free to sign up!!
I'll drop a few other nominations tonight/tomorrow, if Hally doesn't close the thread by then which I doubt!!
Seconding!!
I'll nominate Sigma Klim for best hydra then, since I see you did not here!!!
Feel free to nominate multiple times for the same category, if you want!!![]()
Easy second!!!!
Also wanted to mention that Garden Gnome is extremely good at making both high quality and high consistency flavour!! Always a pleasure to read and work with her, even with some of our more last-minute games!!!
The current meta is to please message the mod before signing up, if they ask you to do so!!
@how are giraffes real Hi, this is a mentor mentee game where you'll be assigned a mentor throughout the game!! Heads up you'll need to sign up on your main if you want to play, though; alts not allowed!!!
Agreed, we will get through it either way!!!!
After all, we're a family and family means we're a bunch of hazards to society!!!
@Mantichora Been meaning to share this with you for a while:
Congrats, you've reached peak catgirl!!!!!
I was very tempted to test that out, but okay; good to know!!!
Hmm, interesting; thought you said you didn't like my posting?
Also no, I'm not angry; just a bit incredulous that, well, actually I'm not going to waste my breath here either!!!![]()
Hmm, interesting; why would you describe that situation as sad?
I for one would be hyped if I had actually randed mafia this game, because then I would know what's genuine and what isn't!!!!![]()
