Yeah, I'm going to need some more time... work is going to be pretty hectic until the weekend before thanksgiving break. We'll see about doing either or both of these categories that week so I can get them in before the craziness that is most of December.

I don't have as much time as I'd like or thought I would be able to listen to new music that isn't already something I know or on my list because I listen to so much while I'm working, and the next few weeks look pretty rough, but I'm going to at least listen to my assigned album and DM Shad my thoughts. Hopefully despite my usual thoughts on Metal I'll still find something to appreciate in it! We'll see if I get around to listening to and/or saying words about any of the others, but I'll try to refrain from comments if I do unless they're of at least some positive nature.

And then somehow there's THIS. How the $%#! did you even find this? My breath is taken every single time, and I've lost track of how many times I've heard this, it's already a part of my consciousness. If the last two songs are what the Earth says and they exist in a vacuum, then this is what I see as an active participant of the nature, as from the first second it feels like there's internal processing of external stimuli. Equally as life-affirming. The way all of this composition's components come together is like the tastiest electroacoustic sound collage. This is hands down my favorite new discovery of the walrus so far, and it has some truly unprecedented and breathtaking competition so I can't believe I'm even saying that. I had to signify that in some way* because you absolutely broke my scoring system, congratulations. This feels literally composed to be tangycore, like the universe wrote this for me personally. This song is the ultimate manifestation of why I love this game. More words.

And then somehow there's this. Touching, delicate, wonderful, and magical. I've bonded with this album perhaps more than any single other during the time period since I've started this walrus, which serves as a reminder of how I'm always forming new and closer bonds with music as my life continues. I've cried to it, slept to it, studied to it, you name it, so I know this song like the back of my hand now. Somehow... it still hits me with more emotive power than ever, like I'm hearing it for the first time. This doesn't just make me feel at peace among nature, it is my happy place.

Everything I could have ever asked for in this cat, this lives and breathes of this Earth, it's speaking. Completely genius execution of both atmosphere and repetition. How does something this perfect even exist? I've had many moments in my life where I've struggled to find meaning in my life, and I've found that there's nothing more life-affirming than a truly natural setting. This song not only understands that, it exudes it.

Ahhhhh, my soul is at peace. Mother Nature's embrace sounds like this, it's just... comfort. It creates a place where I want to live forever. The spiritual successor to Plantasia for the COVID era. When I first heard this, I thought "combo sub?" but the more I hear it the more I realize that would have not done this song justice. When I hear this song, I feel like I want to run this category again just so I can feature this song as an example song.

What an epic and fun journey. My initial reaction to this was the equivalent of "LMAO WTF" especially when I saw myself looking at the runtime like 30 seconds in on my first listen, but I kept listening and at a certain point I realized I am just enjoying the $%#! out of this ride whatever it is, and somehow it kept getting better and better. After the halfway mark the song just completely shifts gears and I am so god damn here for it. The first half is a fascinating and awkward yet perfect fit, it's like an existential dirge through nature and I march on realizing how meaningless human existence is because THIS will outlast us all, and the instrumentation drives that home (triumphant, overwhelming, repetitive, existential), and then... exhaustion sets in. The second half is truly something, that soaring guitar along those field recordings is life-affirming. This has to be one of the most entertaining songs that is not at all tangycore adjacent that I've ever received, if not the single most. I... might just have musical Stockholm Syndrome, this song has taken up so much of my headspace.

I sort of need to be able to give this song two distinct enjoyment and catfit ratings, the buildup and the aftermath, so as a result I spent a lot of time trying to move this around. The buildup is very atmospheric and cool, particularly fitting visions of foggy forest and everything, and then the blastbeats and vocals come in and I start going this is still cool I guess but hmmm. Even though it loses me when it goes metal and I have some trouble engaging with it overall, a neat song nonetheless. All throughout it's so easy to picture trekking through nature.

My brain screams that I'm robbing this and it makes me sad, but my heart isn't in it no matter how much I try. It's good, but... is what I keep thinking. The mysterious wind, faint cries of life, this is a compellingly atmospheric walk. Elements of uncertainty and anxiety exist, but they don't take away from any of that, instead they give it this unique feel. The song is definitely interesting and cool, but I don't get immersed in the repetition nearly like I'd prefer to, it's lacking appropriate subtlety or something.

Walrus Still Corners - The Trip...

    Still Corners - The Trip
    Submitted by: Visorslash

A trip indeed, I can hear the memories being made as the song goes on. Appropriately vivid in terms of both the instrumentation and lyrics -- going on a long-winding road trip amid nature, driving away, seeing sights, but it's still removed in some way as we're clearly in the car (the disconnect is notable). Nonetheless, what an intriguingly lovely and dreamy submission.

Submitted by: Owner Of A Lonely Heart

Pleasant, nice, introspective, a walk around town on a rainy day. Even if somehow by my standards it's too background musicy, I still enjoy it enough. A clear Urban Natural combo for my ears, and as such it loses a bit on the catfit although it definitely conjures up rainy day feels enough to catpass pretty well.

I wish I found this more compelling, but it has a nice groove-driven atmosphere at times and I respect the journey it takes me on. I can see this as a grueling day among nature that, while breathtaking, takes its toll and leaves you completely exhausted but satisfied in ways only that escapes among nature can really do.

Superorganism - Reflections On The Screen
    Submitted by: Made

This one sort of grew on me, at first I just heard a cute little song that was too generic and not really grabbing me at all, but it kept getting stuck in my head -- that hook is sweet. The birdsong throughout is such a nice touch. As for catfit, it's such a mixed bag, with nature sounds and the general pace painting a walking through the park with things on my mind imagery... but it keeps clashing with the questionably introspective human lyrics that make me wonder if I'm just too far in my own head and not really lost in the nature around me.

    Submitted by: Wisdom

I've been Eurovisioned. Considering that, this could have been so much worse, it's actually fun. The voice is not my style but impressive, and I don't really have any complaints about this other than it's too folk anthemic in a way that makes it difficult for me to truly get into. For catfit, this has a very similar issue as the Nightwish track, it's about how humans tame nature when I really want to just *feel nature*.

    Walrus Nightwish - Harvest...

    Nightwish - Harvest
    Submitted by: KarmaDope

I had no idea Nightwish sounded like this, the metal isn't even there for a while, so strange. I see what you're going for quite easily as these lyrics are quite vivid, but it's over the top in a way that's too cheese-laden for me and it doesn't really conjure up a scene that is... natural enough, it has too much emphasis on human influence. It's a glancing hit on the target, you hit the outer edge of the target but you're still rather far from the bullseye. The song itself isn't too bad in some respects but in others it's cringey. But I can actually make it through this one!

Wait, what? I see why this was a one-hit wonder (it's oddly catchy), but also I don't at all (these lyrics what the actual $%#!?). The 1980s seem like such a bizarre time. Also lmao that I just got subbed Cannibal Ox last cat and here's the iconic sample source. Why Natural though, why??? I felt like of so many of my prompts this was one of the easiest to catpass, I don't get it.

    8. Naturalnatural, lush, foliage, watery, weather, organic

This is the counterpiece to urban, so instead of being inside my apartment sheltering in place for COVID-19 because I work from home, I want to feel like I'm transported somewhere entirely natural, of this Earth.

Rushing water, chirping birds, the sun shining on my back, water dripping off branches, feet crunching on leaf litter as I walk, etc. Hopefully that helps paint the picture. The setting could take place in a forest, in the ocean, at the beach, in the snow... it's your choice, as long as it's vivid.

Okay so I may not be able to wait for tomorrow, seriously.

I apologize for a potential last minute change, but my work and adulting schedule shifted some stuff around and I find myself a lot more wide open today and I'll be running errands in the time right before I'd reveal tomorrow, so while that could still happen in about... an hour or an hour and a half would work extremely better for me. If I can get enough turnout I'll do it, hope this is alright with folks. Hopefully we don't have to do this again.

My goal is to get through those cats before we get into December!
delay of game, offence, 5 day penalty, repeat 8th category

I think this feels more sufficiently hype now, hope to see you all this Friday, October 29th! We will be starting right at 4:00PM PT / 7:00PM ET / 11:00PM GMT.
