    I apologize, this is not something I either wanted to do or really had the time to do properly.

    As you all probably know, or even if you don't, this is a project I absolutely wanted to see through to the end. I scrambled to find subs upon subs upon subs, I plopped down money to find artists to contribute to the project, and had big plans for the flavor, storyline, game events and endgame.

    That being said, life happens. Several things are interfering with my ability to continue:

    Work is getting more consistent and consecutive days off are getting less consistent. I really need a run of several off days in order to advance a round, and those are getting difficult to find. This is only going to continue.

    The project, when in full swing, does take up an enormous amount of my personal time, time that I need to use to concentrate, and.... that is time I am not using to move, or spend with my wife, or do anything for myself. The game is taking a toll on my physical and mental health, and I cannot reliably set aside the time or energy in the coming months.

    Around mid- to late August, struggling to find the time to advance the round, I noted that we had gotten through half of the game time, but it had taken more than half of a year to get that far, not even including the extended pause earlier in the year.

    If I were able to continue at full pace, which I cannot, we would get another quarter of the way through the game and then that would be it, because in December, that is when the baby is due.

    At that time and even before that, I need to be available 24 7 for my wife and the newborn. For a time I will be the one working in the house, and when I get home, it's babysitting and so forth, and finding time to sleep. It is unrealistic in the extreme to expect I will have the time or energy to continue at that point, at least for a long while.

    In the interim I will of course be losing more players, I predict. And, it's been a struggle even when the game is going at full pace to get everyone's orders in, so I will end up juggling finding and orienting new players with chasing down folks for their orders, instead of hosting when I do find the time.

    I really had hoped, when I began the project that everything would be done by the following October. With the news of the baby coming, I needed to set a hard deadline for the project for December, ideally before then. If every turn takes a week, there was not enough calendar left. I considered pushing ahead anyway for the players who are committed to seeing the game through to the end, and for my own sake as well since I really wanted to finish telling the story.

    In september it became clear to me that it is just not possible. And then I struggled to even find the time to close out the game properly. And I really, really didnt want to.

    Part of the delay in announcing anything was because, I was hoping against all hope that I could find a solution that works. Part of it was total denial, I did not want to kiss this project goodbye at all, part of it was loathing what I would have to do to close out the game and give it a good send off.

    I don't know if a solution can be found. I also know, there really isn't a way to continue and also bleed players. And I know I will bleed players because the game can't consistently continue. And if I am struggling to find time to advance the game now, it will be impossible in December and afterward.

    Wild solutions like finding cohosts or just handing the game itself off to another host entirely were considered.

    That will not work. The hosting takes too many hours out of your week. You would have no idea how much of a commitment it would be, and since it wouldn't even be your personal project, you're not going to last the 20 cycles of processing you need to do.

    When I ran the first game, it was during the economic downturn in the USA and a period of time I was unemployed. I had all the time in the world to advance the game. That game also had the move and action phases combined as one, so the game was half as long. That game also had instant death if you reached zero HP, so people dropped like flies in that game. For balance and design reasons, I wanted each player to be able to have one for certain survival of a death in this game, so that more players would survive to mid to late game, be able to contribute positively to their team before the swarm took half of them down naturally.

    So, on the whole, it's a matter of, this game is more complicated than the first, it's twice as long, and it did not have the natural loss of complexity as people died off.

    In fact, it's been a struggle to keep track of everyone's notes, keys, unique items, and each player is boasting a larger and larger inventory. When they die off, their inventory can get transfered to another player, just adding to their pile.

    I can go on, but it's just getting lengthy. There are a few things happening under the hood which are negatively impacting the hosting, which I didn't fully anticipate. Each round is becoming a snarl to untangle.

    Upon reaching the decision not to continue, I also wanted to find time to set aside so I can do a proper postgame. Reveal all the secrets, reveal all the player movement to date, release all the private threads, reveal in full how scoring was to be done, reveal my predictions for how the game was likely to have played out and who would have won and who would likely have survived and which teams, if any, would prevail in the third party teams versus third party teams.

    I also wanted to reveal the story I had planned and the endgame event I was working toward.

    All of that is a project as well and I just didn't have time to do it justice. I still do not, but I will try to do bits and pieces when I can.

    In any case, I let you folks down and I don't want to keep leaving you hanging on a cliff waiting to know what happens. It's a massive bummer and no one is more bummed than me about it.

    I officially cannot continue, and you all have survived the game and are the winners. Even the folks who died.

    Because I am going to be slow on my end, revealing spoilers and stuff, you are all permitted to reveal everything you want. All private threads can be made public by staff or whoever, if they have time and the desire to do so, with the exception of the host-only threads. Those will remain private for now, and any info in them I will make public I will do myself.

    In other words, only the resident evil comms channels can be made public.All private threads that are game related are labeled as comms channels, including threads where it is just the host and the player alone. I would offer a suggestion, which is to put them all in a subforum in the archive, so that they can be all easily found and accessed at will, without folks needing to dig through pages of other games to find them. But that's totally up to you.

    When I have time, I will post all the items, weapons, memos, locations of hidden things, story, endgame spoilers, and any other postgame commentary.

    I ask for your forgiveness, patience, and understanding, and hope that this thread stays civil. Be nice to one another, now that you can speak freely.

    Town survivor team wins and was projected to achieve all their win conditions.

    SynTech team wins and had a slight lead in objectives and map movement over the opposing team, however it was not a foregone conclusion at all.

    Umbrella team wins and had accomplished approximately the same amount of their mission as the SynTech team, and could have intercepted them and taken the win, since they end up at the same location in the end. A conflict ending in destruction of at least one team was designed into the objectives.

    Lover team wins and their survival versus the Parasite faction was not a foregone conclusion at all, particularly with the damage taken. But they were outgunning the Parasites and had successfully killed one, and had negotiated sniper support and town was assisting them. I predict one of them would die before endgame to a Parasite, but that's all a dice roll.

    Parasite team wins and they located their prey and removed their saves, making it possible to mate and consume them on the next encounter, with luck. Again, it comes down to a dice roll. The two factions had become very evenly matched by midgame. Both teams played well.

    Serial Killer 2 (Jaleb) wins and was projected to reach 1st or 2nd place in the Serial killer contest. He found very important healing and regenerative items and had infiltrated the town and was working cooperatively with them to score points, and by his own admission, would have turned on the town by endgame for his win conditions, likely scoring big.

    Serial Killer 3 (Newcomb) wins and was projected to reach 1st or 2nd place in the Serial Killer contest. He managed to convince town to hand him the Bloody Chainsaw item, and was also packing a massive horde of weaponry and had boosted his own stats, and had heals. Both of these serial killers were somewhat known to the town either due to their actions (Newcomb's early offensive movements) or due to some good detective work by Mhsmith (Jaleb), however, since town wasn't in communication with itself, only some of that news got spread around to a few people.

    Serial Killer 1 went inactive and I was puppeting them and was going to use the slot to kill off inactive players, and then have the slot get stomped by a Gigante, but the game ended before those deaths were scheduled to occur.

    Omega zombie faction loses and was getting their butts whipped.

    All three gigantes were close to death, and the survivors were so well armed and doing so well versus hordes that I would have had to deliberately keep pumping out larger and larger hordes to defeat the town. Which I would have done, to get bodies and put the outcome into question from the player's perspective, but town was really killing it here. Basically they were going to win unless I decided to make the game unplayable.

    Only possibility of a town loss is if the Parasite faction succeeded in absorbing the Lover team and became Plague Tyrants, then they would have been more dangerous than any Gigante and could destroy clusters of well armed humans.

    congrats to you and sooh on your precious baby, but i'm sorry for everything else. i hope you can feel at least some catharsis and i hope when life gets a little easier and kiddo is born, older, more independent etc. we see more of you again.

    and i'm especially sorry to you and wg for my non-participation and having to be subbed; what happened to me is thankfully over but i couldn't play any more. i absolutely loved having a mason in this game though, and i felt some reallly incredible tension while i was able to play. thank you for taking over, creature!

    Conditional flee orders
    Fleeing means not dying (or at least reducing the odds of dying).
    It’s important to have conditional flee orders in MOST situations. Do you see zero enemies at start of combat phase? There could be enemies with sniper rifles on top of rooftops outside of your view range, or there could be hiding or INVISIBLE (cough, cough, this guy https://capcom.fandom.com/wiki/Novistador) enemies. You NEVER KNOW when something is going to $#@! up your day (also I’m PRETTY sure that in last game by the end there were hiding zombies trying to set ambushes, and while I think it’s probably a bit too early for that just yet, it’ll happen eventually. Probably.); if you think you’re safe you MIGHT NOT BE (among other things, there are also multiple serial killers floating around, and it's realistic to presume a stab is gonna happen at some point, so much better safe than sorry PARTICULARLY in cases where you see no obvious enemies nearby)

    Generically, you should think about setting conditional flee order at 3, 2, 1, or “after saving throw used”. Which is best in which turn will depend on your particular circumstances. ALWAYS THINK THROUGH WHAT IS BEST FOR YOUR FLEE ORDERS.


    Groups
    Grouping up is a POWERFUL weapon against the threats this game throws at you. HOWEVER, pizza has thrown up multiple explicit counters (like, THREE gigantic ones ). Try and find ways to “hack” group mechanics.

    One potential way to do this is with radios. If you've got 8 people, and 2 of them are in radio contact, you can have two groups of four instead of one group of 8 (which should MASSIVELY cut down the aggro - IN PARTICULAR, on turn 8 we'd picked up SO MUCH gigante aggro by being a bunched group of 9 that we had to split up [at start of turn we were bunched up at and near H8/G7, JUST outside of gigante's fighting range], see the SUCCESSFUL smith plan

    (the 2 to the west were 1 fleer and one follower, so it's a guesstimate of where they landed)
    (also note that the construction of this set GUARANTEED that even if gigante DID come after us, he couldn't possibly be within fighting range of more than 2 of us... and since he started move phase 8 in I6, it was realistic that he wouldn't be particularly aggro'd by our now split up group, which turned out to be CORRECT)

    Another possibility is using river spaces to "break up" a group. You CANNOT trade across river spaces (and I think you can't do melee combat across them either) but you CAN do sniper combat and POSSIBLY regular ranged combat. Note that I EXPECT to see some kind of explicit counter to this from pizza if people start using river squares en masse (likeliest outcome: river zombies spontaneously spawning near people) so don't abuse this mechanic, but it can be helpful in specific spots.

    Extreme anti-bunching strategies definitely don't need to be used all of the time, but I cannot emphasize enough how DANGEROUS it is to bunch a large group of people together in a small space. Group mechanics can be hacked and/or massaged, but just dumping a bunch of people together will result in massive counters and massive danger. This is particularly important if any gigantes are nearby, but I believe it to be important in general. Massaging group mechanics introduces some awkwardness and need to manage things, but it also removes a meaningful portion of the danger associated with being in a group. It's probably worth the extra effort in general, even if you're limiting yourself to the simpler stuff like "walk around in a 2x2 formation instead of one large single space group". Speaking of which...


    Formations
    I THINK that a 2x2 formation is generally powerful against bot-zombies (if you have three people it's an arc, if you have two people sometimes it may be best to connect diagonally).
    If you very slightly spread out, you reduce the issues associated with a bunch of zombies piling onto one single square and forcing melee combat. If a whole horde goes onto one of your spaces, then the other three can use ranged weapons and get a free first round. Free first rounds drastically cut down on the power and danger level of a horde.

    On the other hand, if your 4-man formation has decent sniper coverage, consider what I'll call "tetris block" formation,
    something like
    Player A H16
    Player B H17
    Player C I17
    Player D H18 (or I18 for a bit more spread)

    As long as your outer members (H16, H18/I18 in this example) have sniper weapons they can support the formation against any attack, and as long as your inner two members (H17, I17) are reasonably hardy, they can engage in any battle. This gives you a bit wider of an overall viewing angle, as well as extra chances to meet up with some other group (and short-term meetups can be helpful for trading information, optimizing item distributions and herb builds, and figuring out mutually beneficial plans)

    If you have MORE than four people in a group, you should probably spread out a bit further than a 2x2 formation. Maybe a 3x3 "X" type formation, maybe something else, it largely depends on your specific setup (as well as, importantly, how many sniper rifles you have for cross-support; and how willing you are to have people join into combat allies a space or two away [ask pizza for more details on how that works if/when it comes up]). Note: by an "X" formation I mean something like:
    Player A H16
    Player B I17
    Player C H18
    Player D J16
    Player E J18
    so everyone is connected but it's a bit spread out and MIGHT attract a bit less zombie aggro. Note that this formation in particular is heavily reliant on the central member (I17 in this example) not fleeing or getting killed (which breaks up the whole group) so if you don't have someone like that consider scrunching a bit more, something like:
    Player A H16
    Player B I16
    Player C I17
    Player D J17
    Player E J18
    (this formation gets NEARLY as much spread, but will only break up if 2+ people flee/die, so it's a bit more conservative while still preventing multiple people from being on one given space)

    You also get a wider viewing range by being slightly spread out, which brings us to…


    Rooftops
    Get on a rooftop (you can only do this in action phase apparently) and STAY on a rooftop
    (you can stay there as long as you are at WALK speed). Rooftops give you 3 visibility, and 4 if you have a sniper rifle too. Sniping bad guys is good, but just as critical is simply knowing what is around you, so you can plan movements and actions better. Obviously sometimes you'll need to move at run/sprint speed so you can't ALWAYS be on a rooftop, but you should ALWAYS hop on a rooftop as part of your action phase orders and then decide whether to stay on a rooftop the next move phase or go above walk speed. The other nice part of being on a rooftop is…


    Searching
    Search CONSTANTLY. Search every move phase, and search every action phase unless you have a GOOD reason not to.
    Searching gets you new items, and searching can find hidden or invisible enemies. Every turn you’re searching is a turn where a hostile enemy who’s nearby needs to pass your search check. If you’re in a group, said enemy needs to pass EVERYONE’s search checks. This converts “hiding enemy” from “oh $#@! we’re screwed” into a problem that’s handle-able (this is one reason why search stat is valuable – not as valuable as some other stats, but still overall helpful).

    ALSO: items are CRITICAL for getting stronger and staying alive. Back on turn 7 our large group had a 6-zombie horde and got $#@!ed up by the sniper, but in the end we healed about as many hp as we lost that turn.

    That’s because we found healing items, and armor, and good weapons. Without that stuff we’d have been hard-pressed against the zombies, much less the sniper. Every turn you find new stuff is a turn where you can get stronger. This game’s only going to get harder; the stronger we get, the more formidable we are. Good armor, good weapons, good stat growth. I think we’re all behind the 8-ball in terms of where we need to be (I’d guess most others around the board are too). We need to go out of our way to make sure we catch up.

    On a related note: following is (usually) BAD. Don’t follow someone, use that turn to search instead (if you have a particular hostile who's almost dead and fleeing and you're very confident about your ability to kill them the next turn without dying yourself, ignore this point, but that should be a pretty rare exception).

    Successful search checks keep us alive and kicking in this game, and the most precious resource by far is TIME. Every turn we’re not achieving something and not getting stronger is an opportunity lost which we will NEVER get back. That +1 to accuracy you get while “defending” in combat is a little bit helpful, but what’s MORE helpful is the search check result you get after you win. +1 accuracy is +5% per strike. It’s not nothing but it’s not much, unless you're about to be part of a massive, "win or die" type large-scale group combat. THEN it might be valuable (although even then, if there's a chance of a hiding enemy, search checks may STILL be better). And at any rate, that's a decision for action phase, during move phase just run search instead of defend and see what it gets you.

    Remember, each search check could give you armor, or a good herb, or a healing item, or a good weapon, etc etc etc. I’m pretty sure that I only got those shots off on the sniper back in turn 7 because I had my armor absorbing some damage; without it, I suspect I’d have been forced to flee a turn earlier and then we'd have been in far deeper trouble. I got that item because I made sure to SEARCH (literally the first turn I showed up I made that order ), and hoo boy has it paid off.


    Item destruction
    Destroy your $#@!tiest items.
    A low damage/speed pistol? Break it into parts. The biggest downside to searching is that if you duplicate an item you already have, then you’ll find zombies instead ($#@! YOU TURN SEVEN btw). This is ALWAYS a risk, but you can minimize it by keeping your items inventory reasonably lean. The worst items are probably extra common too, so that’s really where you’re gonna find the value in not letting them take up inventory space and absorb potential rand outcomes.


    Additional Inventory Management
    You cannot SEARCH for duplicates of items you already have, but you can TRADE for such duplicates.
    In some instances, it may be useful to give one player 2-3 copies of the same item so it doesn't take up inventory space across multiple players. This is PARTICULARLY helpful when it comes to items that aren't going to be immediately useful (backup healing items [only if they're the SAME healing item], herbs that will eventually be part of combos [green herbs in particular should be common, so if like 3 people have green herbs, maybe have 1 person hold 3 herbs to minimze the risk associated with another green herb serach check?] )

    Botanists in particular should be adhering to this concept. Botanists are super overpowered in this game (borderline broken roles if played to their maximal potential), but since there's the "find duplicate item get zombies instead" nerf that is almost certainly aimed at them in particular, they in particular should work to find workarounds. The simplest one: in a party of multiple people, have the botanist trade the herbs they find to someone else in exchange for non-herb items (weapons, armor, specialty items, etc). When enough herbs are found to activate 3-herb combos, decide which player gets the combo (maybe a rotation? maybe some other negotiation?) That way you minimize the odds of the surprise zombie search check while maximizing the odds of finding useful $#@!.


    Achieving Objectives
    Figure out what specific objectives you want to achieve and work towards making them happen.
    NO ONE can do it all themselves, and “trust your teammates to do their jobs” is important too (for instance, someone sprung NPC_Cindy from the arena a while ago which probably pays major dividends down the line).

    Some other possible objectives to consider: opening key areas; killing enemies of the town; and freeing human NPCs (Alex Sanders should be *SOMEWHERE* and we're kind of running out of possible key buildings where he might be; I'd originally guessed hospital but that's obviously incorrect at this point)


    Sniper Combat
    USUALLY, if you use a sniper rifle against some target, you'll get one shot and then it'll take cover. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE ON TURN NINE IN COMBAT AGAINST WIGGLES. My interpretation of this is that if you don't have a sniper rifle, AND you're in combat with someone else, your only options are to continue combat while getting sniped every round (this is what happened to buggles and why the shots just kept on coming) OR to run away. This is potentially USEFUL for attacking really strong individual enemies; if you can combine regular combat and sniper combat at the same time, you can pile on the damage while having only some of your party actually in harm's way.

    NOTE: gigante is a partial exception to this, my understanding is that he can throw stuff (like cars) at sniper range while in regular combat too. HOWEVER, my understanding is ALSO that he'll only attack snipers who actually HIT him (so if you miss he'll ignore you) which still makes combining sniper and regular combat against him probably a lot better than the "regular combat only" (or that plus a special attack item concoction) approaches that have universally failed so far.

    Also, note that unless you're REALLY sure that you can survive multiple turns of sniper combat against a serial killer, I STRONGLY suggest you build in "if I get sniped, flee immediately" orders. If I'd had the foresight to enter those orders myself, turn 7 wouldn't have been such a disaster. Needless to say, this is now part of my core orders that I do every action phase because I will NOT let that $#@! happen to me again.


    Enemies
    Zombies (based on last game, dead players get to control zombies and actively try and kill us); key point: my educated guess is that the "standard" zombie hit points / vitality is THREE (this means that you should be able to deal 3+ damage per combat round to your enemies at this point in the game, or you will STRUGGLE against zombie groups, particularly if you're running solo)
    Two examples in particular supporting the estimate
    1) Turn 9 - An omega zombie dog, with no saving throw, was killed by a sniper shot which was likely 3 damage based on public flavor
    2) Turn 9 - the zombie horde that faced against NPC_Cindy, Ryan, etc had one of their members die on first combat round.
    I strongly suspect that particular zombie was successfully sniped by us (one hit, for 3 damage) on turn 8, which would have spent its saving throw, enabling the group to kill it outright in first combat round of turn 9

    Gigantes (autobot-controlled but still EXTRREMELY strong);
    Plagas/Parasites (at least one is literally invisible; Cory's the parasite queen who will implant eggs into townies and turn them into monsters after consuming its targets [cough, cough, us]);
    Serial killers (duh);
    Umbrella;
    Syntech.
    The latter two are probably more concerned w/ murdering each other than us (IMPORTANT NOTE: last game umbrella got points for murdering townies, this might the case here too), but removing them from the game is potentially helpful as well (side note: game #1 was won by a syntech/town alliance that had a really big fight against the plagas faction on like turn 12 or something)

    I wasn’t really sure, and tbh I didn’t super care. But at the lowest points I mainly wanted someone else to lose first
