    2R1B Signups and Interest Check [Finished!]

    When I’m not online playing mafia, one of my real life hobbies is playing board games with friends, which occasionally… ends up in playing mafia. Specifically One Night Ultimate Werewolf, a mafia adaptation I’m sure a lot of people are familiar with. (If not, consider checking it out, it’s a great way to get friends and family into playing without it becoming too complicated)

    One of my OTHER favourite boardgames to play is Two Rooms and A Boom (2R1B), which carries some of the same themes as mafia (Deception, socialising, team play and solving) but has a different set up altogether.

    Allow me to explain a bit about the game :
    (Or if you don’t feel like reading my ramblings, there’s a video guide here)

    General Overview

    Whereas werewolf is a battle between the uninformed majority and the informed minority, 2R1B is a game of two uninformed teams of equal size, the Red and Blue team. As the name suggests, it’s played in two rooms (In this case, private threads). Each room has a random mix of Red and Blue players at game start. Players cannot communicate with the other room.

    The Blue team contains a player with the role of the President. Every member of the Blue team wants the President to be alive at the end of the game in order to win.

    The Red team contains a player with the role of the Bomber. The Bomber automatically sets off his bomb at the end of the game, killing every player in the same room as him simultaneously. Every member of the Red team wants the Bomber to be in the same room as the President at the end of the game, because their win condition is to kill the President.

    The game is played in three rounds (Or sometimes five if the group is large). Each room elects leaders by majority and they decide on a number of hostages (determined by the game size) to send over to the other room in between rounds. The last hostage exchange is at the end of the game, after which cards are revealed and victories are determined.

    Some other details (For these I pretty much just ripped the paragraphs straight from the rulebook and modified some things for forum adaptation):

    More Deets on Leaders
    Leader Responsibility and Hostages
    At the end of the round the leader selects a certain number of hostages. Hostages are players that switch rooms. The number of hostages depends on the round and the number of players in the game. IMPORTANT: a leader can never be a hostage.

    Nominating a Leader
    The first player that is voted by another player to be the leader becomes leader by default. That player will be formally declared as the leader. If other players are not happy with this leader, they may attempt to change leaders (see Changing Leaders below)

    Changing Leaders
    A leader remains the leader of a room until one of two events occur:

    1. Leader abdicates leadership to another player
    If the current leader no longer wants to be the leader (usually because the leader wants to be a hostage) then the leader simply hands the leadership to another player. The player receiving the leader card may accept or decline leadership. If they decline leadership, the original leader remains leader. If they accept leadership, they become the room leader and they cannot abdicate the leadership card back to the previous leader until the next round (no givesybacksies).

    2. Usurping the Leader
    Any time a player does not want the current leader to be leader, they simply announce their desire to usurp and vote for the player they desire to be the new leader. Note: a player is permitted to vote for themselves. Once the number of votes for a single player equals more than half the number of players in the room (a majority of the room's players), that player becomes the new leader and receives leadership.


    Types of Card(Role) Sharing
    This terminology has been slightly changed to be more precise for forum.
    It is Very Important that everyone understands the difference between initiating card shares and card reveals.
    There's a 5 possible ways to share information about who you are to people:
    Private Reveal - any form of card revealing from one player to another that does not require reciprocation (nonrevealing player is not expected to reveal). This include both team colour and role.
    Card Share - a “consensual” form of card revealing where 2 players temporarily exchange character cards. The card exchange is traditionally done to see what character a player is. Once initiated, both involved players are expected to card share with one another. This include both team colour and role. If you don’t intend to share cards, don’t ask.
    Color Reveal - any form of colour revealing from one player to another that does not require reciprocation (nonrevealing player is not expected to reveal) This is ONLY team colour and does not include role.
    Color Share - a “consensual” form of reveal where 2 players only reveals the color portion of their character cards to one another, thus only revealing the color of their card (and possibly their allegiance). Once initiated, both involved players are expected to color share with one another. This is ONLY team colour and does not include role. If you don’t intend to share cards, don’t ask.
    Public Reveal - any form of card revealing towards multiple players that does not require reciprocation (nonrevealing players are not expected to reveal). If a player has to permanently publicly reveal, this means that they can no longer do any other form of sharing or revealing. To do so would mean ceasing the permanent public reveal, which shouldn’t be done. This include both team colour and role.


    Whispers and OOT Information (New!)

    Unlike mafia/werewolf where discussion must take place amongst all members to be fair, 2R1B has no restrictions on privately sharing information between people since both teams start off uninformed and private shares and reveals are intended to help develop knowledge of your network of allies without jeopardising your key players unnecessarily.

    As such in order to bring it to a forum format, there need to be ways to privately communicate and this will be implemented in the form of whispers.

    To send a whisper you would need to do the following:
    1) Declare in thread "/whisper to [player x]"
    2) Send that player a pm, CCing myself.
    (You do not need for me to process your whisper in any way, as long as you follow this format)

    You MUST perform step 1 before step 2. This is to emulate everyone being able to see you whispering IRL. If you do not, not only will I publicly announce your whisper for you, but I'll be very upset because this is the one thing I don't need to be hands on for


    Please DO NOT initiate whispers that DO NOT CC ME!!



    Gambler
    If you are playing with an odd number of players, it is impossible to have an equal number of Red Team players and Blue Team players. This is why the grey Gambler card is shuffled with the other cards. At the end of the last round, before all players reveal their cards, the Gambler must publicly announce which team, the Red Team or Blue Team, they think won the game. If they are right, they win the game; if they are wrong, they lose the game. It doesn't matter where the Gambler ends the game, whether with or without the Bomber. The Gambler simply wins if their prediction is correct.


    For a while now I’ve been wondering if this is ever run on forum and it turns out Board Game Geek runs a popular Play By Forum board for it, but I think it would be really fun to run it over here and I’d love to give it a shot if people are up for it!

    It probably needs a bit of workshopping, so I’m looking to do a smaller game first as a test run and go from there, probably like 18 players max with only a few non vanilla roles in play, 3 rounds.

    Phase lengths need to be determined and I’m not sure what the best way to execute them is. Since it’s more conversational of a game rather than high deduction, short phase lengths probably work best, so we’ll start with 12/12 and if it seems a bit slow/long (I doubt the latter) we can tighten it up or consider running on discord or something if it runs again.

    Mechanics: Colour shares allowed.
    Communication: Both threads locked during night phase. NO DISCUSSION OF THE GAME MUST TAKE PLACE OUT OF DESIGNATED THREAD'S Except for whispers. This is intended to be a light game for fun, so post minimum is set to 3.
    No maximum post limit.

    Setup: TBD depending on fill and other factors. Likely to contain the following roles:
    Bomber - Everyone in the same room as you at the end of the game gains the "dead" condition. The Red Team wins if the President gains the "dead" condition.
    Engineer - when playing with the Engineer, the Red Team has the following additional win condition: the Bomber must card share with the Engineer before the end of the game or the Red Team loses. At the end of the game, the Bomber will be asked if he/she card shared with the Engineer. At that time both players will verify or deny having card shared.
    President - Blue Team wins if you do not gain the "dead" condition.
    Doctor - when playing with the Doctor, the Blue Team has the following additional win condition: the President must card share with the Doctor before the end of the game or the Blue Team loses. At the end of the game, the President will be asked if he/she card shared with the Doctor. At that time both players will verify or deny having card shared.
    Spy/Spy - You colour share as the other teams colour, even though your win condition is not that colour (I.e. Red spy colour shares as Blue, Blue spy colour shares as Red)
    Coy Boy/Coy Boy - You begin with the "coy" condition. Players with the "coy" condition may ONLY color share even when a character's power might force a card share. They may not card share, privately reveal, or publicly reveal their card or their color.
    Negotiator/Negotiator - You begin with the "savvy" condition. Players with the "savvy" condition may only card share. You may not publicly reveal, privately reveal, or color share.
    Usurper/Usurper - USURPER power: During any round but the last, you may publicly reveal your card and automatically become the leader. However, your card must permanently remain publicly revealed for the rest of the game. This means that you can only use this power once. The Usurper cannot be usurped during the same round in which the Usurper stole leadership, not even by another Usurper. If 2 Usurpers use their power in the same room during the same round, whichever Usurper used their power first remains the leader, the other Usurper wasted their power.
    Mayor/Mayor when you publicly reveal your card, your vote counts as two votes. This means that you can publicly reveal your card to count as two people for OR AGAINST the nomination of a new leader.
    Enforcer/Enforcer - ENFORCER power: Once per round, you may privately reveal your card to two players. Those two players must card share to one another (not to you). You cannot use this power on yourself, but another Enforcer can use their power on you.
    Immunologist/Immunologist - You begin with the "immune" condition. Players with the "immune" condition are immune to all powers and conditions without exception.
    Gambler (3P, only in play if the player list is odd) - at the end of the last round, before all players reveal their cards, you, the Gambler, must publicly announce which team (Red Team, Blue Team, or neither) you think won the game. If you are correct, you win. If you are incorrect, you lose.

    Actions possible:

    All actions must be bolded and phrased in the format as listed here, or else I will disregard the action request.
    You may ping me and quote your command if I do not process it within the hour it was requested (Unless it is in the last hour of the phase, in which case you may ping me in the same post as your action).

    /private reveal to [player B]
    I will mod confirm your color and role to player B. Player B will not reciprocate by default.
    /card share to [player B]
    Player B must respond to your request with either /accept card share with [player A] or /deny card share with [player A]. If the card share is accepted, I will mod confirm both parties color and role to each other.
    /color reveal to [player B]
    I will mod confirm your color to player B. Player B will not reciprocate by default.
    /color share to [player B]
    Player B must respond to your request with either /accept color share with [player A] or /deny color share with [player A]. If the card share is accepted, I will mod confirm both parties color to each other.
    /public reveal
    I will mod confirm your color and role in thread.
    /whisper to [player B]
    Must be declared before you send a pm to player B, CCing myself. You may say whatever you want in the whisper.
    You MUST declare this action before sending the PM, however you do not need to wait for my approval to send a PM after it has been declared, as long as you CC me in the PM.
    See above for more details on whispers.

    If you are a Usurper:
    /Stage a coup
    Activates your usurper power, publicly revealing your color and role and automatically assigning you as leader for the rest of the round. This action cannot be taken in the last round (Round 3) and may only be activated once per game.

    If you are a Mayor:

    /Roll out the parade
    When you publicly reveal your card (Via /Roll out the parade), your vote from that point onwards until the end of the round counts as two votes. You may activate this power every round, if desired, but you must public reveal every time it is used (Via /Roll out the parade).

    If you are a Enforcer:

    This requires no public actions
    Instead you must PM me with the names of the two players you wish to force a card share between. I will privately reveal your color and role to both of them and then activate a card share between them regardless of consent. This power may not be used on yourself. This power activates once per round.

    If you are the current leader:
    /abdicate to [player B]
    Player B must respond to your request with either /accept leadership from [player A] or /deny leadership from [player A]. If the leadership is accepted, player B automatically becomes leader. (Player B cannot abdicate back to player A until the next round)

    If you are a leader at the end of the round:
    This requires no public actions
    PM me directly with the subject line "Hostage picks" and tell me the names of the player(s) you would like to send to the other room during "night phase" (I.e the down time in between rooms). I will declare in thread how many hostages are required for exchange at the start and end of each round. Hostage submissions must be decided 1 hour prior to SOD (6 AM PST). :00 Good, :01 Bad. Failure to submit in time will result random selection of hostages to send.




    I will run this regardless of how many fill provided we get more than 6, but 18 is the max I want to run for this first game. I will close signups at 7AM PST on the 28th to make final changes before rand.

    You didn't say anything about what colour-sharing/card-sharing is in the OP. (edit: either I type too slowly or you edit very fast)

    I'll play, personally prefer more roles though (especially Engineer and Doctor, or whatever the blue equivalent of Engineer is). Maybe we can add them if we play a second game after people get used to how to play.

    I just put some info up and will also update a bit later once I figure out how to implement actions such as whispers and reveals.

    Re:roles. I'm definitely down for adding more roles if people feel comfortable with the concept it's just that since this is preliminary so it's kind of up in the air just how many people we have anyway and I think the concept is easier to get with a simple set up to start. If we get to the upper ends of filling I'll definitely consider at least adding Engineer and Doctor to the mix because I think those definitely help reduce stagnation. Let me know if you have other recommendations~

    On Second Thoughts, bbt is 100% right about this being too role weak. I'll be adding some more interesting roles to the signup post and let you guys know which ones stay in once we're capped.

    I may also throw up a smaller exhibition game (Probably 6-9 players) starting next week or next next week just to do a quick test run and work out some of the kinks. I'll link it here once it's up.

    I'd rather not shut the door on it just yet, in case of some last minute recruitment, but I'll finalise the set up on Saturday during the day (PST) and correct the OP accordingly.

    Technically color sharing is 10 or fewer players, but I'm okay to play loose with it and just not worry too much unless it really bothers you guys that I want to leave it in. Presuming we stay at 10 players probably I'll go with something like this:

    President/Bomber
    Doctor/Engineer (I'm debating whether to leave these in or switch them to Vanillas, thoughts on this?)

    I'd say for a first game leave out Doctor and Engineer as long as the game is relatively small. You could add them in after a few games if things start getting stale (like the last round starts just feeling like a coin flip every time).

    Oh yeah I guffed up the wording, I meant 11 or more. And yeah that's true, I'll probably just use Vanillas if we're going to run with 10.

    This is also true... Hm, I think with 12 it should probably be fine to leave them in? The big problem with running them in small games is that increasing chances the President/Bomber's cover is blown when they're looking for the Doctor/Engineer can be a little frustrating, but I think having to trust people eventually, especially with the other roles we're playing with, is maybe more interesting than having the Pres/Bomb just kind of sit around.

    Votes for leadership should be made in the typical Modbot format and will be kept track of by Modbot. I.e. ignore all the typical stuff about votes being for a lynch. Since I can’t turn off the lynch completely, if you “”die”” don’t panic - it means nothing in the context of the game we’re actually playing.

    Everytime the leader officially changes I will declare it formally in thread and also re-declare who was effective leader at EOD, so you’ll know who gets to pick hostages.

    Modbot will do the inital rand. You will each receive a PM with your full card (colour and role) as well as a link to a private game thread that functions as your starting room. Remember that once PMs are sent out all contact with members not in your room (Including via whisper) is forbidden!

    I will create a new thread for each room overtime a new round starts so no one who enters partway through will know what has been said previously. The link to the thread you should be in will be sent via PM. This means you will receive a new room link for each of the rounds - the previous round threads will be closed.

    One last note, make sure you have space in your PM inbox. I have no idea what to expect as far as volume of whispers sent, but I anticipate it might be a lot, so make sure you have the room to receive a decent amount of messages and notifications turned off, if you’re so inclined. Expect people to try and communicate via whisper (pm) and make the necessary changes for your sanity.

Forger

The Forger may target a player every night and rewrite their last will. If the targeted player dies that night, their altered last will is published. The Forger may rewrite 3 last wills at maximum.
