From John Travolta: Dugong Jr feat. Tashka - Secrets (YesYou Remix)
There’s enough background stimulation and variation that this doesn’t become generic. It feels like she’s going a little too high at the very start, and the shriller noises get on my nerves a bit, but the song overall feels refreshing. That really short segment of drums at about 2:00 is a nice touch.
From Zack: 100 gecs - stupid horse
I honestly expected to dislike this much more than I did. But it’s absurd and frantic, and that makes it endearing enough to balance out any irritation from the abrasion of this style.
From Sentenza: Jeff Williams - This Will Be the Day (James Landino's Magical Girl Remix)
This is dancefloorish and has a super fun, refreshing rhythm to it. I’m not a huge fan of the vocal segments, but I haven’t heard the original of this song - maybe it’d hit me harder if I had.
Also from Sentenza: Relay Bros - Grass Land 1 (Kirby’s Dream Land 3)
Continuing a bit of a trend here, this is incredibly fun to listen to even if it’s not very deep. It sounds like there’s a sound effect from the Sailor Moon dub somewhere in there? There’s a really interesting blend of different styles, and I appreciate how it doesn’t really try to sound like a single song.
From LordQuas: PIXL - Laundry Matter
This is neat and snappy enough to hold onto. I’m not super sure how to feel about the shift in foreground beats in the middle, but it’s attention-getting for sure and I think I come down on the side of liking it. Not totally sure why this laundry machine is bopping, but that’s okay - this is a cool track.
From gbsfranca: Charli XCX - Silver Cross
I keep waiting for something heavier in the instrumentation that doesn’t really come, but I can vibe with it staying light. I'm a fan of her vocals throughout.

From OrangeP47: The Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight, Tonight
The orchestrals here definitely feel adventurous. I enjoy the balance between the more stripped-down sections and the ones with more expansive instrumentals.
From sande: Coyote Kisses - Six Shooter
This chorus is a lot more catchy than I expected! Keeps the instrumentation from being too forgettable. I generally appreciate the aesthetic and energy it’s going for.
From nutella: This Town Needs Guns - Adventure, Stamina & Anger
I’m a sucker for the dynamism of this sound. I particularly like the twisting feel of the introduction and twinkling feel of the background. The vocals don’t totally win me over and the song feels a bit meandering, though.
From Panini: YONAKA - Teach Me To Fight
This is assertive and heavy right off the bat, and I really enjoy the heavy instrumentals. It has a very similar feel to Six Shooter, to me, but I like how it goes in a few different directions.
From KnightsofCydonia: Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats - S.O.B.
Man I didn't know what to make of this for a while. It's so cheery for the subject matter, haha. I don’t always love the rawness of his vocals, but I like the steady rhythm of it and how self-aware it feels about the subject-tone disparity.
From Zack: Moses Sumney - Rank and File
I enjoy the vocal style and bursts of ominous instrumentation. There’s a really interesting layered sound that builds here, and the “fall right into rank and file” refrain is enthralling.
From M Plus 7: Underworld - Cowgirl
Mmm, the build to a more complex sound in this piece is really nice. It starts off with a gritty feel that makes me anticipate that build, and keeps running with it in a very intentional way.
From Zack: Death Grips - Hacker
The spacey, scrabbling background noises and stabs pair really well with the aggressive vocal delivery - the song just grabs you and keeps going. The chorus is almost catchy. I’m in, I’m into this.
From ladd: Carly Rae Jepsen - Run Away With Me
You really can’t deny how irresistible the energy of this is. CRJ’s delivery is excellent, and the buoyant, oversize instrumentation complements that really well. I don’t really know what that sentence means, but I really like this song. It’s exultant.
From Dobby: Mumford & Sons, Baaba Maal - There Will Be Time
Wasn't really sure where to place this. I like the strength of Baaba Maal’s delivery. The sparse instrumentation at first works to spotlight the vocals, and the break into instrumentals is vivid and intense in a really nice way.
From iaafr: Sleigh Bells - Riot Rhythm
Super fiery. I really enjoyed the bold sound of the instrumentation and shouts along with the gentler vocals - it’s definitely rousing. I almost want to say it’s cutesy even though it’s clearly got an edge. I wish it went on for longer and maybe went in new directions, but it’s very nice where it is.
From Newcomb: Mura Masa - What If I Go?
Ooh, I’m a big fan of the vocals in this piece. The background instrumentals are peppy and bright, pretty well-organized around the vocals, dynamic enough to keep me engaged. I wasn’t totally sure about the distorted vocal segments at first, but they grew on me a ton. Really catchy and smooth.
That's all for category 5!
I'll put the scores so far in this post sometime before the next reveal.
Next reveal will be probably around the same time on a weekend in a week or two, I'll announce the details closer to.
That was fun, thanks Keldeo! Looking forward to next reveal.
Planning for a reveal this weekend! I'll tag everyone once I've finalized the details.
Hi, revealing category 6 (water) tomorrow at 1 pm PDT / 4 pm EDT / 9 pm UK time! Only one person didn't submit to this category, so I thought it would be the best for a solo reveal. The category should run for a bit over 2 hours.
Sweet, was one of my favorite categories. Dunno if I'll be around at that time though, but it's okay.
Any word on the scores for the last reveals?
hype i guess
i didn't submit anything in water so

There's a chance I'll miss the start, but still, hyped!
Sorry everyone - something came up, so this will be happening an hour or two later than scheduled. I'll ping everyone here and on Discord when it starts!
From Egix96: Chris Kogos - DEKAY
Haha, I can’t say I ever expected to be sent a song made of Spongebob meme sounds. I guess the setting fits the category, doesn’t it? This is surprisingly quality for being made up of meme sounds. It’s a little repetitive, but it has a chill feeling that I appreciate.
I'm going to have to give it a no dawg
From sande: 【 ぽわぽわP 】 アストロノーツ ~ 【 PowaPowa-P 】 Astronauts (acoustic ver.) ft. wonderlandica
I don’t have much deep to say about this song. I like how the layered elements of background noise throughout add to the melancholy, drifting vibes, and enjoyed the outro because of it. I feel like if I understood the lyrics or context behind the song more, it might be more touching.
From Frog: UPSAHL - Drugs
There are these dissonant touches in the vocals and background sounds that keep me from getting too comfortable with this song, which is a nice effect. The almost gloomy backing vocals are cute. I can’t really get into the lyrics, though...
From ladd: Jackson Browne - Late for the Sky
I’m not a huge fan of the vocals for some reason, but otherwise this is pleasant. I feel like it drags on a little bit, but I didn’t feel bad about anything in particular here.
