Season 7, Game 4: CHESS - The Mafia Game [The Mafia Championship]

SEASON 7, GAME 4: CHESS - THE MAFIA GAME (MAFIA CHAMPIONSHIP)

Welcome to Season 7 of the Mafia Championship!

An international forum-based tournament for Mafia players from all over the world

Hosted By: Our automated @Mafia Host w/ @LanMisa providing flavor
    Start Date: May 11th, 2020
Start of Day/End of Day: 9 AM EDT / 9 PM EDT
    Phase Lengths: 36/12
Lynch Mechanics: Deadline Lynch (person with most votes is lynched at the end of the deadline). In case of a tie, one of the tied players will randomly be lynched. No lynch is a valid vote. Starting Day 2, Majority is enabled, meaning the players can end day early if someone attains a majority of the votes.
Night Chat In Thread: No, thread will be locked during Night Phases
Out of Thread Communication: Only the Mafia team may communicate with each other outside of the thread (24/7)
LYLO Rules: Votes are automatically locked in at LYLO. I.e. when the game reaches a point where one more mislynch leads to a loss, you cannot change your vote once you have cast it.
Minimum Posting Requirement: Minimum 10 posts per Game Day
Maximum Posts Allowed: 150 posts per player per Game Day (restriction is lifted 2 hours before EOD though, so if you've reached your max you can post again at that time).

    3x Mafia Goon
2x Town Jack Of All Trades (9x Doctor, 9x Motion Detector, 9x Tracker)
    10x Vanilla Townie

Note that the Jacks Of All Trades must use all three actions before repeating an action, i.e. they are rotating. This does not mean they must use the actions in the same order every time.

    Relevant mechanics info
    - Votes are automatically locked in at LYLO.
    - Mafia factional kills are assigned. They can be tracked, watched, roleblocked, etc. (In this setup, that means they display as an action to the Tracker and the Motion Detector actions.)
    - Mafia share a factional Night Kill, which is a single standard shot for their faction. The mafia faction kill is mandatory.
    - Mafia may communicate at any time.
    - Each individual player may make a maximum of 150 posts per day phase (this restriction is lifted 2 hours before day end).
    - The game will have a host to oversee everything and make sure everyone’s following the code of conduct, but otherwise the game is completely automated (automatic votecounts, thread locks and reveals roles automatically, the bot receives and processes actions, etc.).

Doctor: Protects the target from kills on that night only (cannot self-protect)

Tracker: Learns who the target visited, but not what actions they did

Motion Detector: Detects motion involving the target on that night (finds motion if the target visited someone or was visited, with no distinction between the two)

    JOAT Role PM:
Role PM for Vanilla+ Champs Test Game -- Euro-Friendly!

You are Town Jack of All Trades (x9 Doctor, x9 Tracker, x9 Motion Detector). You win when all threats to Town have been eliminated.

    Town Jack Of All Trades

As Town Jack Of All Trades, you have access to one or more night actions.

    x9 Doctor

You have access to the Protection Night Action. Protection will protect your target from being killed. You will not learn whether you successfully protected someone. Submit your Night Action each night using the form below the game thread. You may change your target as many times as you want. The last action submitted will be used. You cannot target the same player on consecutive nights.

    x9 Tracker

You have access to the Tracking Night Action. Tracking another player informs you who that player used a Night Action on that night, if any. You will not learn what type of Night Action your target has. Submit your Night Action each night using the form below the game thread. You may change your target as many times as you want. The last action submitted will be used.

    x9

You have access to the Motion Detect Night Action. Motion Detecting another player will detect any motion surrounding that player that Night. If they visit someone or were visited by someone else, you will detect motion. If they did not visit anyone and were not visited by anyone, you will not detect motion. You will not learn what type of Night Action was used on or by your target or who used those actions. Submit your Night Action each night using the form below the game thread. You may change your target as many times as you want. The last action submitted will be used.

Submit your Night Action each night using the form below the game thread. You may change your target as many times as you want. The last action submitted will be used.

If you do not submit an action, you will forego your action on that day. Keep in mind that if you have multiple uses of your abilities, you must cycle through all of them before being allowed to reuse any of them.

    BIO:
Rather than giving any useful information about my playstyle, I’m going to give you a mildly interesting history fact.

In his commentary on the Aeneid, the Roman historian Maurus Servius Honoratus describes how the traditions of Rome adapted as Rome began to grow and expand. One such tradition involved a symbolic ritual, performed when one declared war on one’s enemies, which involved hurling a spear into their territory. This posed a problem when they began to go to war against enemies from which they were separated by water. According to Servius’s account, they resolved this by forcing a captured enemy soldier to buy a local, Italian plot of land, then hurled a spear into that plot of land.

(The History major in me feels obligated to inform you that Servius was writing centuries later, and that just because he claims that it happened doesn’t mean he was correct.)

BIO: Hi everyone I'm a little lost. I was looking for the Werewolf Championchips, but I got redirected to here? It seems there's some kind of mistake. Everyone knows that Werewolf is the superior game. All of you Mafia players are nothing before the power of a lycanthrope. Alas, I hope one day to find my home: Werewolf Universe. BIO:
    Hello everyone.

I’m Carlos, and I will be representing the Neoseeker Interactive Role Playing Forum. Our forum has always had a player reach at least the Wildcard level in the annual championship here.

I enjoy the challenge of solving a game, and finding the right people to help me do it. I've been given the "most likely to be killed on Night 1" title, amongst others, for three years in a row on my homesite. Fortunately, I get to make it that little bit longer on different platforms... sometimes!

“Would you rather be the big fish in the little pond, or the little fish in the big pond?”

Who doesn't mind being the fish occasionally? That being said, I embrace the little fish periods; otherwise I wouldn't be here. Throughout the years in this game of mafia, this is what has allowed me to develop a more sound approach to the villager alignment. I'd like you to tell me what you would rather when we start playing!

About me? I’m always happy to have a chat. I’m a Psychologist, love to stay healthy, and am a long time fan of Survivor!

I’m excited to play with everyone here, and look forward to making new friends along the way!

    REPRESENTING: Mafia42

    NATIONALITY: New Zealand European

    STARTED PLAYING MAFIA (YEAR): 2019

HAVE PLAYED MAFIA ON THE FOLLOWING SITES: Mafia42, Mafia Mystery

    BIO:
all! I’m here representing my community Mafia42 for the first time! I’m fairly new to Mafia, but I’ve been playing everyday since I started! I don’t have a particular favourite role, but I do love any sort of mafia helper. I would say one of my strengths is not giving up. Even if the situation looks bad, there’s always a way to achieve victory! My biggest weakness is players lack of trust in me, due to how much I lie (even as village). I’m quite new to this style of Mafia, as the roles are quite different to the ones I deal with but I’m looking forward to playing with them and adjusting!

    11) orangeandblack5

    REPRESENTING: Liar's Club Online

    NATIONALITY: American

    STARTED PLAYING MAFIA (YEAR): 2014

HAVE PLAYED MAFIA ON THE FOLLOWING SITES: Town of Salem Forums, Throne of Lies Forums, Chief Delphi

    BIO:
I am a twenty-year-old electrical engineering student at the University of Michigan who has recently returned from a long Mafia hiatus while I worked with the University of Michigan Solar Car Team to design, build, and race our newest solar-powered electric vehicle, Electrum, in the 2019 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge. Working as one of two electrical engineers preparing the car for the race, I was able to help our team secure a third-place finish on the world stage. Before going to college, I earned the rank of Eagle Scout, spent four years rowing varsity as a lightweight, and helped found a FIRST Robotics Competition team at my high school.

I had originally started playing Mafia in 2014, but really started taking much more interest in the game when I moved to the Town of Salem Forums in 2015. I earned a solid reputation among the ToS community for suggestions made to balance the game, and came to be an on-and-off member of Flow, where I developed most of the core of my more aggressive FM playstyle.

In 2017, I made the jump to the Throne of Lies forums, initially to help out with another promising real-time social deduction game, hoping that it would be updated far more rapidly than the juggernaut that was ToS. Unexpectedly, however, I found that the forum community there was much more attractive to me than the game itself, and so ramped up my involvement with FM in general. I participated in a majority of the games on the site over the next two years, and was chosen to represent ToL in Season 5 of the Mafia Championships, where I had one of the only successful heals across the entire Season.

In January of 2019, shortly after the kickoff for that year's FIRST Robotics Competition season, I hosted the first full FM game on Chief Delphi, a FRC-focused forum I had been a member of for years. After the developers of ToL caused a massive upheaval of their forum community, running out many longstanding members, I began building a new FM community on Chief Delphi, introducing a bunch of new friends I made through FRC to the wonderful world of FM. Unfortunately, this too was fated to come crashing down on me, and the day before our one-year anniversary the Chief Delphi administrators completely banned FM from the site without warning, locking the game currently in progress and ghosting our pleas for an explanation.

Thus we arrive in the present. I had been meaning to start playing Video Mafia ever since Shakespeare, one of the founders of Liars Club Online, had originally asked me to following my defeat at his hands in Season 5 — but I was so busy with the transition to college and my involvement with Solar Car that I couldn't afford to jump in until more recently. I have found Liar's Club to be a lot of fun, especially in the current state of quarantine, and am happy to be able to represent them in Season 7, especially given their stellar track record from prior seasons, and I hope to be able to carry that legacy forward.

    REPRESENTING: Something Awful

    NATIONALITY: US

    STARTED PLAYING MAFIA (YEAR): 2007

HAVE PLAYED MAFIA ON THE FOLLOWING SITES: Something Awful, Mafia Scum, Spies

    BIO:
I have been playing Mafia on and off since college and never gave up the ghost, I guess. I have completed the arc of "always give me power roles" to "actually just make me vanilla so I can post up a storm" long ago and have never looked back, unless the power role is named "Bus Driver." Live in Phila and studied film in grad school, have a daughter on the way in July annnnnnnnnd my favorite pie is Key Lime.

    14) squire12

    REPRESENTING: Football's Future

    NATIONALITY: American

STARTED PLAYING MAFIA (YEAR): mid 90's live games while in college....mostly around some drinking and other fun stuff. Re-turned to the game in 2018 in forum based games. live vs forum is way different

HAVE PLAYED MAFIA ON THE FOLLOWING SITES: Footballs future

    BIO:
More analytical based player vs gut reads. Absorb and process content from posts, interactions and VC. Post less than what many likely will. Typical home site games are heavy role based to keep more players invested in participation, so the minimal PR will be a distinctly different setup.

    15) TvK

    REPRESENTING: Mario Kart MB

    NATIONALITY: Belgian

STARTED PLAYING MAFIA (YEAR): I think it was 2014

HAVE PLAYED MAFIA ON THE FOLLOWING SITES: mariokart64.com; mafiascum.com

    BIO:
I started playing this game on mafiascum in 2014, but to be honest, I sucked at it. Only my very last game I played, I actually felt like I contributed to a win (I won as maf in lylo). Then in 2016, we started playing mafia again on mariokart64.com. In my first two games, I established my current meta of being a very high-volume poster who is not afraid to put the heat on anyone. While I love playing like this as town, it unfortunately meant like I had to keep up this playstyle as maf, which either resulted in my postcount dropping off or me accidentily leading lynches on my buddies because I know town!me would have done the same. In the earlies games I would regularly draw the mafkill on N1 or N2. Later, I would always have some kind of suspicion over me because my town and mafplay looks really similar in the early game. That's an unfortunate consequence of meta when always playing with the same core group of about 10 players.
My favorite mafia role is without any doubt (and perhaps surprisingly) vanilla townie. My motto in every game is that my vote is by far the most powerful weapon I've ever been given in a game. As VT I can dominate conversation without any repercussions if I do draw a nightkill. I love reading into voting patterns and analysing wagons if I make it to later stages of the game. I look forward to playing with new people and I'm very curious to see if I can keep up with the level of activity.

WHAT THE $%#! DOES "WTF" MEAN?

Are you not familiar with some of the terminology used by the other players? Maybe this will help you: TERMINOLOGY EXPLANATIONS.
    MAFIA GAME RULES
Rules may vary from community to community, so we highly advise you to carefully read these rules.

    • Only post/talk about the game in this thread. Don't PM other players, unless you are mafia and wish to talk with your teammates. Also, don't post anything about the game in other threads or on other forums.
    • Don't try to use the form of your role PM. So a screenshot of your role PM would be cheating.
    • You are not allowed to change your avatar, location or any other profile info during game in any way that could be construed as hinting at your role.
    • This is a game of lying. Players are expected to lie. No statement or promise a player makes within the game has any force outside the game. As an example, a bet offered in a game is not something you can collect if you win.
    • If we believe you to be bending the rules intentionally in a way that clearly goes against the spirit of the rules and the game, then that would also be grounds for modkill.
    • If you have any questions about rules, send a PM to your host. Avoid asking questions to the host in the thread.
    • Don't ever refer to private communications with the Game Host.
    • If you should ever require a replacement, PM Lissa and stop posting in the thread.
    • No hydra'ing / multi-accounting is allowed. Do not share your account with anyone else.
    • You are not allowed to reference the post-game voting during the game. I.e. you cannot post "if you lynch me, you're not getting my vote after the game" or anything like that.
    • Treat your fellow players with respect. Hostility will not be tolerated.

Refer to this post for the complete, standard ruleset for mafia games.

I will repeat this particular rule once more in big letters to make sure you understand:

DO NOT EVER REFERENCE THIS GAME OUTSIDE OF THIS GAME THREAD. YOU SHOULD NOT BE TALKING ABOUT THIS GAME WHATSOEVER ON YOUR HOME SITE. IF PEOPLE ASK YOU QUESTIONS, TELL THEM YOU CAN'T TALK ABOUT THE GAME AND LINK THEM TO THIS THREAD.
    MINIMUM ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS
All players are required to make a minimum of 10 posts per game day.

The game hosts and tournament organizers reserve all rights to immediately sub out any player not meeting this requirement, regardless of whether or not the player has met the requirement on previous days. Similarly, if players are only meeting this requirement by spamming and/or posting in the last hour of the day, that and similar circumstances would also be cause for substitution.

If players aren't posting, the tournament organizers will always first try to prod the players in question.

    SUBSTITUTION PROCEDURE
If your representative needs to sub out during a QUALIFIER, your community's backup will take their place, assuming 1) you've elected one, 2) they've registered a user on Mafia Universe, and 3) that I'm able to get a hold of them within a reasonable amount of time (i.e. with enough time left in the current phase for the sub to work with).

If I can't get a hold of your backup, I will give the spot to a representative from a community that joined the series late - or failing that, a backup from one of the larger communities.

If your representative needs to sub out during a SEMIFINAL or FINALE game, your community's backup will NOT take their place. Instead the next person who was in line to receive a semifinal or finale spot will take their place.
    DISCLAIMER ALERT
The beauty of the Mafia Championship is that it brings communities closer together, and it provides an opportunity for players to learn new playstyles, metas and mechanics. And hopefully make new friends as well.

All that being said, the games can also very quickly become overwhelming and frustrating since you probably won't be able to play completely in the same way that you're used to. You don't necessarily need to adapt, but you will probably need to accept that some of the other players will have a different approach to the game than you.

We hope that you will embrace this as part of the experience. It's easy to grow frustrated with people when you don't know them (imagine how you would have felt playing with your friends on your home site if you didn't know any of them when you played your first game together), so a huge part of playing in the Championship is also getting to know the other players in some way.

Specifically, the seasons have taught us that you should be prepared for:
    • A very high level of activity. On average, there will be 500-600 posts per 24 hours during the early stages of the game in qualifier games, and likely more in semifinal/finale games. This is a melting pot of dedicated and enthusiastic players all gathered in one game.
    • You will likely face very different posting styles: Some will post walls of texts with many quotes, some will post a ton of one-liners, and some people will be very keen to interact in real-time in the thread (using the thread as a chat rather than a thread you pop into a few times a day).
    • A flurry of activity towards the end of the day. This means that if you check out 5 hours before the day ends, you should not be surprised to return the next day to see that the wagons were changed multiple times. If you want your vote to count, be careful to not agree to a game where you can never be around for EOD.
    • A few players in your game will probably have played with each other before. This has become impossible to prevent as increasingly many players have played on Mafia Universe.
    • We do not condone abusive remarks and we have banned several communities from participating based on this before, but each season features dozens of new communities, so there is always a slight risk that you might encounter abusive players. If you do, please report them and we'll take care of it.

Past seasons have shown that players get more enjoyment out of the games when they make connections with the other players, so we highly encourage you to join our Discord server either before or after the game.

Finally, we encourage you to at least skim some of the season 6 games to get a sense of how the games usually play out: https://www.mafiauniverse.com/forums...mmunity-Events

    FAQ

Are you unsure about how actions are processed or how roles interact with each other? Then read more here:

    ORDER OF OPERATIONS

Night actions are processed in this order:

    Strongman kills
    Roleblocks
    Jails
    Doctors
    Bodyguards
    Kills
    Investigations
    Backups

When an action was submitted during the night will never matter when the actions are processed.

    ACTION FEEDBACK

These are the results you will get when you submit certain actions.

Non-investigative roles when they submit an action (they also receive this if they are roleblocked):

Your action on Player A was received.
Investigative roles (Tracker, Cop, etc.) when roleblocked:

Your action on Player B did not return any results.
Trackers when tracking a person that didn't visit anyone (or if they targeted a Ninja):

Player C did not visit anyone.
Watchers when watching a person that wasn't visited by anyone (or only visited by a Ninja):

Player D was not visited by anyone.
Alignment Cop when investigating a town-aligned player (or a Godfather):

    Player E is Town
Watcher when watching a person that was visited by multiple people:

Player F was visited by Player G, Player H, Player I
    Voyeurs

Voyeuring another player will inform the voyeur of the types of actions done to their target that Night, if any. They will not learn who used those actions. Some example types:

Killing: Factional Kill, Vigilante, Poisoner, Arsonist (Douse)
    Protection: Doctor, Bodyguard, Firefighter
Investigative: Full/Alignment/Parity/Role Cop, Tracker, Watcher, Voyeur, Motion Detector
Manipulative: Jailkeeper, Roleblocker, Framer, ITA Boost, ITA Nerf

For a full list, refer to the official Action Types reference.

Note that Voyeurs do not see their own action in their results.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I submit my action?
Use the form below the game thread. If your role has a night action, the form will only be visible during night phases. It's not possible to submit actions in advance of the night phase.

What does it mean if the Mafia Host says that night kills are assigned?
In games with this setting turned on, the member of the mafia team that made the most recent night kill submission will be the one assigned to the kill, which means that the kill can be blocked if a Town Roleblocker or Town Jailkeeper target the mafia player in question. Similarly, the kill can be tracked and watched by Town Trackers and Town Watchers. If this setting isn't turned on, then it doesn't matter who the last person to submit the mafia kill is, as the kill is unblockable and untrackable in this case.

Where do I find example role PM's?
This thread contains example role PM's for all roles currently supported by the Modbot as well as information on the various modifiers. Here you will find the answers to a lot of questions not covered in this FAQ section.

    Which roles can self-target?
Only Watchers are able to use their ability on themselves at night. This means that Doctors or Jailkeepers aren't able to protect themselves, for example.

Which roles are not able to target the same players on consecutive nights?
Doctors, Jailkeepers, and Roleblockers are not allowed to target the same player twice in a row. Everyone else is, including Bodyguards. Note that this non-consecutive restriction still holds true even if one of these three roles were blocked the night before when targeting the person that they're attempting to target again.

What happens if Jailkeeper A and Jailkeeper B or Roleblocker A and Roleblocker B target each other (and are not targetted by other blockers)?
In the case of Jailkeepers, they will block and protect each other. In the case of Roleblockers, they also block each other. This means that the two players are trackable to each other that night by Trackers and Watchers. It also means that if one of them is mafia and happens to simultaneously be the one submitting the factional kill that night in a game with assigned kills, then this kill is blocked. This same principle applies to longer loops. I.e. in a A > B > C > D > A loop, everyone is blocked.

What happens if Jailkeeper A targets Roleblocker B who targets Jailkeeper A?
Jailkeeper A will be blocked in this scenario. Refer to the order of operations: Roleblocks process before jails.

What happens if Jailkeeper A targets Roleblocker B who targets Player C?
As stated above, roleblocks process before jails, so Roleblocker B will successfully block Player C. I.e. Jailkeeper A will fail to block Roleblocker B, but will still protect Roleblocker B.

What happens if Jailkeeper A targets Jailkeeper B and Jailkeeper B targets Jailkeeper C (who isn't targeting any of the former two)?
In this case, Jailkeeper A would prevent Jailkeeper B's block from occuring, meaning that Jailkeeper C's action is not blocked.

If an X-Shot role is blocked while using a shot, do they lose that shot forever?
Yes. A 1-shot Vigilante being blocked while attempting to kill someone will not have their shot refunded.

If someone with a Strongman modifier kills Player A who is protected by Bodyguard B, who dies?
Player A will die, and Bodyguard B will survive.

Can a mafia team choose not to kill anyone during a night?
The host can determine this using the Mafia Factional Kill setting. Kills can be mandatory, optional, or disabled altogether.

The default is No. The mafia factional kill is compulsory. This is done in order to avoid deadlocked games where the town keeps no lynching and the mafia refuses to submit a kill. If the game has assigned kills, it will be randomized which member of the team is carrying out the kill.

If there is only one mafia member left in a game without assigned kills, can the mafia factional kill then be blocked and/or tracked?
    No.

Can the mafia submit a kill for one of their own members?
    No.

If I kill someone, does their night action, if they have one, still succeed?
Yes, killing someone doesn't prevent them from performing their night action (unless they investigated someone, in which case they will not receive a report). Refer to the order of operations: All kills happen at the end of the night, and everyone pulls the trigger simultaneously.

Can individual night actions be proxied on mafia teams?
No. If the mafia team has a Mafia Roleblocker, for example, and they want to use this role's action, then the player occupying that slot must submit the action themselves.

If a Lover is shot during the night, while the other Lover is protected that night, does the other Lover still die?
Yes. It's not possible to prevent a Lover from dying of love sickness.

If a Bodyguard protects Lover A, while Lover B is shot during that same night, what happens?
A dies of love sickness and Bodyguard lives.

If there are any Innocent Childs in the game, are these confirmed in the thread right when the game begins?
No. Innocent Childs are able to decide themselves when or if they wish to have the Modbot confirm their role and alignment in the thread. Note that this is exclusively a day action and that it can take up to one minute for the Modbot to process the action.

What results are Alignment Cops, Full Cops and Role Cops given if they investigate a Godfather or a Miller?
Alignment Cops are told "Town" for Godfathers and "Mafia" for Millers. Full Cops are told "Vanilla Town" for Godfathers and "Mafia Goon" for Millers. Role Cops are told "Godfather" for Godfathers and "Miller" for Millers.

Can Role Cops tell the difference between a Vanilla Town and Mafia Goon?
No. They are told "Vanilla" when investigating either of these two roles.

If I roleblock someone with a Bulletproof Vest, will that nullify the effect of the vest?
No. Bulletproof Vests are passive modifiers that cannot be blocked from working.

If I roleblock Masons, Neighbors or Lovers with out of thread communication privileges, can I prevent them from talking at night?
    No.

If I roleblock a Godfather, will they still be revealed as being town-aligned to Alignment Cops and Full Cops that night?
    Yes.

    USING THE SOFTWARE

Are you wondering about how to vote, submit night actions or multi-isolate players? Read about this and more here:

    VOTING BBCODES

Our forum votes for someone by using the vote tags: [V]Thingyman[/V]. Preview:

    ##Vote Thingyman

Make sure that you spell out the full, correct name. Abbreviations or misspelled names will not be registered by the Modbot.

To unvote, use the tags: [UNV][/UNV] . When unvoting you do not need to enter the name of the person that you are unvoting. Preview:

    ##Unvote

    VOTING BUTTONS

You can also quickly vote for someone by clicking on the box with a checkmark icon, which will bring up an alphabetized dropdown containing the names of living players:

This will insert [V][/V] tags with the name of the player you selected in the dropdown, perfect every time.

Click the empty checkbox button to insert [UNV][/UNV].

    SUBMITTING NIGHT ACTIONS

If you have a night action, simply submit this at night by scrolling to the bottom of the game thread. Here you will find a night action form like this:

Click the dropdown and select the player whom you wish to use your night action on. You can change it as many times as you wish before the deadline expires.

    CALLING UP A VOTECOUNT

Votecounts will appear automatically at various intervals, but you can also call up votecounts yourself by following these steps:

First, you need to apply to join "Mafia Game Hosts" under Permission Groups.

Second, once your request has been approved, you will be able to call up votecounts by simply pushing the "Post Votecount" button in the top right corner of any game thread that you'd like an updated votecount for.

    VIEWING VOTE HISTORY

There are three ways to access the vote history for any game.

    1. Click on the "Vote History" button in the top right corner of the game thread:

    2. Click on the "View Vote History" link, which accompanies all votecounts:

    3. Click on Modbot in the top forum menu. This will give you a list of ongoing and completed games:

Next, simply click on "Vote History" to view all votes for that game.

Following any of the above three steps will bring you to an overview like this one:

Click on a Voter's username to view all of the votes by their slot.

Click on a Target's username to view all of the votes for their slot.

    ISOLATING A PLAYER'S POSTS

If you wish to read a player's posts in isolation, simply click on "ISO" in the top right corner of one of that player's posts in the relevant thread as illustrated here:

Alternatively, you can access a player's posts in isolation by clicking on the number next to "Replies:" in the forum lobby.

Doing so will pull up a window listing the post counts for everyone who has posted in that thread. You access someone's posts in isolation by simply clicking on the number next to "Posts:" for that person.

The ISO view itself has Quote and Multi-Quote buttons inside it, which will make it very easy to quickly quote a lot of a player's posts for analysis or commentary:

    MULTI-ISOLATING

If you wish to read not just one player's posts, but you want to ISO multiple players, then click the "Multi ISO" button to the left of "Game Tools" and select the players in question as shown here:

    MULTI-QUOTING WHILE THREAD IS LOCKED

Note that you can multi-quote posts from even locked game threads. This is useful for when you wish to reread the game and do work during night phases.

After quoting the relevant posts, you simply open a different, opened thread and press "Go Advanced". Then add the quotes to your post by clicking the prompt below the post area as shown here:

Now, of course you can't post your work in the game thread while the thread is locked, but you can copy paste and save your work to a local file or the cloud and have it ready to post the very next day phase (if you're still alive, that is).

    BOOKMARKS

Whenever you open a game thread, you are able to bookmark posts. This is for many players an important tool for keeping track of and remembering vital pieces of information, reads, claims etc.

Also, note that these bookmarks are saved to your user account, meaning that it eliminates the trouble associated with keeping notes between different computers/devices.

If you want to bookmark a post, you simply scroll to the post that you want to bookmark and press "Set Bookmark" as shown here:

This will call up 5 different colored icons (Blue, Red, Yellow, Green, and Black) on the right side of the post in question. You can click any of these icons, which will then prompt you to include a note for the post.

If you don't want to include a note, you don't have to - just leave it blank. The color coding in itself can be a valuable tool. Maybe you want to use Red bookmarks for posts that you find suspicious, Green bookmarks for posts that you find townie, Black bookmarks for posts containing claims, or whatever system you can think of that will be helpful to you.

Once this is done, you have now successfully bookmarked a post with a certain color and maybe even a note. If you wish to remove the bookmark again, click on "Unset Bookmark".

    How do I access bookmarks?

There are two ways to access your bookmarks.
    1. Inside a game thread, you can access the bookmarks for that specific game by simply right clicking on the "Bookmark" button and opening the link.

This will bring you to a separate page that is automatically filtered to only show bookmarks from the game thread that you accessed the page from.
    2. You can also access your bookmarks by going to Features in the site's top menu:

This will bring you to a page where no bookmarks are shown by default. However, you have several filtering options.

You can filter by Game, by Player and by Color - and all of them at once if you so wish.

Here's an example of filtering by only red bookmarks in one specific game:

If you want to be taken directly to one of your bookmarked posts, you just click the post number.

    How do I quote bookmarks?

You can also multi-quote bookmarked posts by clicking the little "+" button seen above on the far right side of each bookmark.

Once you have multi-quoted all the bookmarked posts that you want to quote, you will then have to go to the game thread in which you wish to quote the bookmarked posts.

Here you have two ways of quoting the posts.

    1. Click on "Reply With Quote" on another post as shown here:

You will then probably want to delete the last post quoted in the reply box, but otherwise you should be good to go.
    2. Or you can do the more smooth option and click the "Reply To Thread" button at the top and bottom of the game thread - as shown here:

By doing this you will open up a reply box containing only your multi-quoted bookmarked posts.

All chess players who are used as flavour are based on their real life counterparts. Almost all player elimination methods are based on real life examples that did occur (but which are not necessarily tied to the player flavours).

The flavour of the players was randed on the participants of this Mafia game before the roles and alignments were assigned, so flavour and alignment are independent of each other.

    Prologue: One Tournament in Bangkok
    "Bangkok, Oriental setting
And the city don't know that the city is getting
The creme de la creme of the chess world
In a show with everything but Yul Brynner"

The world of Chess was at an impasse. It's the year 2020, the year that the World Chess Championship between Magnus Carlsen and his yet unknown contender was supposed to take place. Magnus Carlsen? He is the current World Chess Champion, aged 29, and a professional model for a Norwegian suit company:

Unfortunately there are two problems: First of all, the Candidates tournament to decide his challenger had to be halted due to the Coronavirus encroaching on the play site of Yekaterinburg in Russia. The second problem is that Carlsen is literally UNBEATABLE. He hasn't lost a serious long-time game in years and sits on an undefeated record of 121 games - world record by over 20 games. So even if by some miracle the Candidates Tournament could proceed at some point it would be all but guaranteed that Carlsen would crush his opponent in the finals. And such a match would be boring and could potentially lead to a financial loss for FIDE, the World Chess federation.

Fortunately though, the main leaders of FIDE are cunning enough to solve both of these issues in one go: Instead of having players risk their lives in a tournament to decide who is the second best player in the world they decided to send clones to participate. And not just ANY clones: They cloned all the former World Champions and raised them to their prime age of 29. That way, not only would there be no harm to actual humans but there is also the chance that whoever wins the tournament will be a worthy opponent for the current champion - and that an interesting title match will result in November. A venuewas hastily prepared in Bangkok which is further away from the epidemic epicenters, the streaming rights were sold to the highest bidder and the players were shipped to the location in time.

    Meet the participants:
    1) Wilhelm Steinitz (Clone name: @TvK ): The first official World Champion, the inventor of strategical and positional play in Chess and the oldest person to ever win a Championship title. This Austrian is not to be underestimated!
    2) Dr. Emanuel Lasker (Clone name: @Macros (malazan) ): A doctor of mathematics and psychology, he held the title for over 27 years, longer than anybody else. It is only natural that he wants his title back at all cost.
    3) Jose Raul Capablanca (Clone name: @evaaaa ): The King of Endgames who revolutionised the analysis of this last part of the Chess game. At his peak he was nearly unbeatable and some say that his knowledge of chess was even greater than that of the modern champs.
    4) Alexander Alekhine (Clone name: @squire12 ): A master of combinations and blind chess, one time playing blind chess against 32 players at the same time! During his lifetime his excessive smoking and drinking held him back at times, but if the clone starts erratic behaviour, he can always be replaced with a replacement.
    5) Max Euwe (Clone name: @Random Task ): The only amateur player to ever become the world champion, being the first player who showed how much of a difference proper preparation can make in a decisive situation. The dark horse of the tournament, but will him being a former FIDE president open new avenues?
    6) Mikhail Botvinnik (Clone name: @orangeandblack5 ): Not only did he win the title three times (admittedly, after losing it twice again), but he is also the founder of the most famous school in chess, a school so influential that it brought forth three MORE world champions in Karpov, Kasparov and Kramnik. But today, Botvinnik is here to show who is the master and who is the pupil.
    7) Vasily Smyslov (Clone name: @Arete ): Being called "Jack of all trades" and "the artist on the chess board", his greatest strength lies in not having any weaknesses and his flexibility to play any style, depending on his opponent. Will this be the key to bring it home?
    8) Mikhail Tal (Clone name: @Carlos ): "The magician", one of the strongest players in terms of combinations and sacrifices. He played his games like he lived his life: Intense, full of risk and almost always with a cigarette in his mouth. Are his moves brilliant, or just lunacy?
    9) Tigran Petrosian (Clone name: @BirPhup ): The "iron tiger" was famous holding even the most difficult positions; his defensive masterpieces are in stark contrast to Tal's all-out chess. Will any chess player manage to overcome this iron wall of his?
    10) Boris Spasski (Clone name: @Drew-Sta ): The "lazy genius" and "master of all trades" might have been the best player of all times, but also the one with the most wasted potential of them all. Losing almost all interest in Chess after becoming World Champion it is to be seen whether competing with the best will ignite his fighting spirit.
    11) Robert "Bobby" Fischer (Clone name: @SAMax ): The American Wunderkind was one of the strongest and most tenacious fighters on the board, being great at understanding positions and endgames and being the only player in history to have won the US Championship while winning every single game. Unfortunately his mind deteriorated after his title win and he became paranoid. Let us hope that his clone got better luck.
    12) Anatoly Karpov (Clone name: @Exile ): Inventor of the "Boa Constrictor" style of chess, pressing the opponent on a minimal advantage over hours until they break down and lose. One of the most resourceful players, with a strong feel for positions and their demands. He is still alive, but for age reasons, his clone will have to do here.
    13) Garry Kasparov (Clone name: @Haze with a Z ): Maybe the chess player with the strongest calculation abilities. During his prime time, not a single other player came even close to his skill level. He expanded the opening repertoire massively and his dynamic and aggressive playstyle was only rivalled by Tal. A player to look out for!
    14) Vladimir Kramnik (clone name: @BleedingRayne ): He perfected Karpov's playstyle and at his peak was a player who could even win equal or slightly worse positions with his tenacy and unyielding spirit. He only recently dropped out of professional chess, still having been a top 25 player in his late 40's. Will his clone get help by the Original one?
    15) Viswanathan Anand (clone name: @Lollipopz ): The last World Champion before Carlsen and the only Asian to ever win the title. This Indian Grandmaster reached his peak rather late, partially due to only starting with Chess at an older age, and single-handedly made the sport popular in India. While the Original is still an Elite player nearing his 50's, his younger double will no doubt be even more fearsome.

There is but a slight problem: All the cloning was performed by [name unreadable] in the country of [redacted], so naturally, accidents are prone to happen. To be more precise, about one in five clones gets created without any kind of conscience, so they feel nothing about cheating and winning using dirty methods. At the same time, about two in fifteen clones are born with better perception than any normal human being and with an especially righteous mind. The FIDE claims that "naturally, none of this has happened to OUR clones", but these claims should be taken with a grain of salt.

Now, with the stage being set, the lots being drawn, let us commence with the first round of this story for the ages, the Chess equivalent of Ali vs Frazier, the ultimate battle of the human minds.

    LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

Hello all, I'm excited to get to meet you guys over the coming days or weeks. Let's all have a good game, and may the best team win!

Regardless of your alignment, I hope you'll make an effort to be active in the game, as you did sign up for it, after all! With any luck, we'll be able to skirt replacements and every player on the list will see the game to its completion. I know there will inevitably be some culture clash, and it seems like a fair few of you come from relatively new communities, but I hope we can all enjoy the game enough to be worth putting the time into it.

Right off the bat, I'm hoping to hear a bit from BirPhup, BleedingRain (what happened to CoolPanda?), Exile, and RandomTask - none of you submitted bios, so I'm interested to hear more about where you're from and who you are. Please feel free to elaborate!

In the interests of full disclosure, Arete and I are quite familiar with each other, and have talked at length over the past months. While I am disappointed to have my situation this championship so closely reflect my situation in Season 5, where I was with eevee, another player I am intensely familiar with yet can't confidently say I can read with great accurracy, I do truly think they'll be a positive addition to the game on either team and I'm happy to have them along for the ride.

    Good luck, and have fun.

Hi all, this is a note for whomever makes the final vote of this game: If you don't end the game by saying "Checkmate" I will be severely disappointed in you.

I also made a few bio reads OB. Let me get my notes. I second your right off the bat stance on said players. I look forward to playing with you.

I love a classic ice-breaker, so let’s fire off a few. Let’s get to know each other. Have some chats and figure out who we all are.

@evaaaa hello, I used to be a notorious liar as a villager too. Though I don’t appreciate the value as much anymore, I think it’s a good tactic when used correctly. My request to you if you are a villager: if you’re going to lie, keep it simple. You can have fun with it, and you can keep whoever you need to guessing all game; but I’d like to see us not fall into madness over a few lies that may have seemed like a good idea at the time. All I ask is, at least think them out. Just speaking from experience here. Hope you’re having a fun time playing the game though!

@Macros (malazan) I vibe with players that get drunk and play. Nothing else to say to you other that, though I will see through any drunken acts if they happen young man

@orangeandblack5 cool bio read, love a good Shakespeare throwback

@squire12 I also hail from a PR heavy site. Don’t worry, I find that the skill transfer works well from role madness to vanilla+ quite well most of the time; though I couldn’t say the same about the other way around. Just thought I’d let you know about me, seeing as you have provided some insight into yourself, that I appreciate a good gut read in conjunction with analytical reads.

Some guidelines around my schedule and when we can be itt together. You can expect me to not be around from now as I go to sleep normally an hour or two prior to now.

    Let’s start here!

Oh yeah I realised I didn't say in my bio, but I come from a community that has 90s days and 90-120s nights. So I am not very good at giving reads. Last I tried to give reads, I got lynched for them not being progressive. I'll try my best to still give some solid reads tho.

Yes, I saw there were a few other Aussies. I hope y’all are QLD folk!

OB/Arete, I’m curious on whether you’ve found yourself with a snap read on each other this early, seeing as you know each other.

Funnily enough, I already have a read on both of you!

    Hola all.

this is a drive by check in post, at a crucial juncture installing load bearing beams in my workshop at the minute.

regards my Bio written by a fellow Malazan member, I do have a habit of posting in games whilst drunk, sometimes to the benefit, mostly not. However, I don't *think* I'll be DPing in this game as I'm being quite sensible during this lockdown time. One never knows

Regards flavour/theme/ etc. I assume this theme was put in due to the hosts enthusiasms, alas I know nothing about chess and the flavour isn't (as far as I read the OP) related to the set up remotely. Such as this is I expect (as someone said earlier) a checkmate post when the final vote of the game is dropped, outside of that I'll probably skate over the flavour so it doesn't confuse me.

Posting/ playing style. I'm not usually a wall of quotes kind of player, the occasional big in depth post, but I play kind of old school (much to some players chagrin) as in I'll read the thread with a pen in hand and jot notes during a catch up, then post a synopsis of my thoughts and where my logic is taking me. If there's a smoking gun post I'll obviously quote it.

with all new players to me, and all new avatars to put a mind association together on I fully expect to flounder about like a drunken seal in an ice cream parlour for the first day or so. the Mafia scene on Malazan has taken a bit of a dive recently activity wise, and I don't think I've personally played a game in 2 years, would need to check that but can't be arsed.

my intention is to drop over to the laptop every time I get to a natural work break point in my build

Sure: I’ll tell you, and then you can tell me why you’re curious?

I think OBs entrance was towny: I think his introduction about knowing Arete came across in a way that he was concerned about the implications of being uninformed about their alignment. As a wolf, I would’ve expected OB to frame it such that he wanted to get it off his chest in case it bit him in the bottom for keeping it to himself.

Arete, not as sure! I’m a fan of early votes, which are clearly somewhat NAI at the moment, though I always find myself liking early things such as said vote on OB that wolves may not feel as comfortable doing.

So both early villagers for me!

I like to push people on actually sharing their thoughts and not being vague, especially since having a read isn't really info that needs to be kept private.

I really don't like this post. This feels like such an easy out to avoid posting solid reads. The only time I'll ever call anyone out for giving their reads is when they feel fabricated or not genuine. You can be wrong in all of your reads, but if you're town, you should never be afraid to post them. The only faction in this game that should be afraid of posting their reads is the one that already knows all of the alignments and is trying to fake that it doesn't.

I'm cool on that post since this is a game where we are all unfamiliar with each other's meta game (ostensibly). If Lolli follows through and posts reads then that's cool, if not then I'll rocket back in here and declare my snap fake vote real.

TvK I'm mildly curious why your post isn't accompanied by a vote given that the logical conclusion of it would seem to be that you're scumreading Lolli

    Hey guys, how's it going?
I'm okay. Can you tell us something more about yourself? You left your bio empty.

His next post probably determines whether I'll put that vote down or not.

Role of the Day
Caroler

The Caroler may each night visit a person and sing them a carol. The carol will inform the targeted player of 3 names, at least one of which is mafia. However, if the targeted person is visiting someone on that night, they will not hear the carol. The Caroler may not choose the same player on consecutive nights.
