Taking Austria to the Super Bowl [Civ 5 AAR]

After representing CivFanatics in two champs finales, it's about time I try out a Civilization AAR.

On my homesite, outside of the mafia forum one of my favorite things were video game After Action Reports (AAR). They've gone by the wayside with the advent of Twitch and Let's Plays, but the basic gist is someone on the forum plays through a game and shares screencaps and commentary to anyone who wants to follow along.
Civilization V is a 4X / turn-based strategy game in which players leads a civilization from prehistoric times into the future on a procedurally generated map, attempting to achieve one of a number of different victory conditions through research, exploration, diplomacy, expansion, economic development, government and military conquest. The different victory types are summarized below:

Domination - Control every player's original capital city through military might and conquest.

Science - Build and launch a spaceship to Alpha Centauri before anyone else.

Culture - Achieve a sufficiently high level of cultural influence over all other civilizations.

Diplomacy - Organize a large and loyal enough coalition to win the vote for World Leader in the World Congress.

Time - If no civilization has achieved any of the above victory conditions by 2500 AD, the civilization with the highest score wins by default. This is the equivalent of ending a mafia game if the wolves aren't caught by a certain day, and then declaring the villager with the most posts the "winner".

    The setup:

    Mods are just UI stuff.

It's worth noting that it's been a long time since I've played Civ 5, or any Civilization game really, and was a somewhat casual player to begin with.

    « Ancient: 4000 BC »

The glorious history of Austria begins in 4000 BCE, when God-Emperor Maria founded the city of Vienna along the Vienna River, near the Vienna Forest and Vienna Flood Plains.

The mighty warrior Arnold is sent to scout the area near Vienna, while the city begins training a scout to help Arnold explore the land surrounding Vienna. Top minds begin research into the noble art of mining.

Arnold discovers ancient ruins north of Vienna, which reveal a barbarian encampment even further to the north, where a lone brute stands guard amidst the snow. Lacking the strength to attack an entrenched defender at the moment, Arnold leaves the barbarians alone for now. He then stumbles upon a Natural Wonder - the Barringer Crater, increasing happiness in the Austrian Empire.

In 3790 BC, a foreign warrior is spotted approaching Vienna's borders. Closer investigation reveals this is no barbarian, but a representative of a fellow civilized people. They call themselves Aztecs, with the immortal Montezuma as their peaceful leader. For some reason they respectfully decline a declaration of friendship.

    Clearly a man of peace.

Shortly after first contact with the Aztecs, Arnold discovers another barbarian encampment, this one in the middle of the desert, directly south of Vienna. Yes, Vienna really is sandwiched between frozen tundra and sweltering desert. With Montezuma as our neighbor. An auspicious start!

A scout emerges from Vienna, whom God-Emperor Maria dubs Sigmund. Vienna starts training a worker as its population grows.

Arnold and Sigmund team up to destroy the barbarians in the southern desert and plunder their gold. The philosopher-scout Sigmund pontificates on the nature of this attack, noting how the men who did nothing but mind their own business are declared "barbarians," while the men who burned and pillaged their camp - completely unprovoked - are "civilized". Arnold tells him not to question the God-Emperor's orders. Both units earn promotions for their work.

As we finish our research into mining with the worker nowhere close to being ready and Vienna's food output worryingly slow, God-Emperor Maria wonders if maybe we should have looked into Pottery or Animal Husbandry first.

Arnold and Sigmund explore further south, but still find no sign of the Aztec homeland, only more and more barbarians. Arnold discovers ancient ruins that bestow advanced weaponry called "spears" upon his troop, and consequently Arnold decides that he and his men are now "spearmen". Sigmund suggests that Arnold and his men are "lame". Meanwhile, Sigmund finally spots the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan, deep in the southern jungle. The city currently houses the Great General Johann Tserclaes, surely there only to fight against barbarians. Surely.

In the jungle, the mighty jungle, Johann Tserclaes sleeps tonight.

Pottery research finishes, and the top minds of Vienna, a little startled by the number of barbarians on the continent, quickly start looking into Archery. And wouldn't you know it, shortly after this new research begins, barbarians are spotted in Austrian territory! Arnold is busy fighting barbarians in the south, so for now Vienna is left to fend for itself with promises that Arnold will be back. Vienna's population grows despite the barbarian presence.

Luckily, there's absolutely nothing of value for the barbarian to pillage.

Arnold finally triumphs over the barbarian encampment he's been engaged with at the same time Vienna dispatches the barbarian trespassers... who still haven't really done anything untoward, just been killed and looted by Austrian forces. Arnold earns another promotion for his valor, and Sigmund discovers ancient ruins, finding survivors he directs towards Vienna, increasing the population. However, the food stores of Vienna are at their limit and population growth stagnates. Most of the continent has been explored, and so far nothing except the Aztecs and barbarian hordes. The worker, Ludwig, is finally ready and immediately starts working on a farm, while Vienna starts building a granary. Yes yes, shrines and settlers are nice, but having zero growth in the capital at 4 population is ... a bit of a problem.

Archery's done, on to Animal Husbandry! Moo.

Time for a social policy! Lettuce Tradition.

Sigmund finds a city-state that's been right on our doorstep the whole time, but they're just ever so slightly out of diplomatic reach; as Sigmund lacks the ability to embark onto water, our elusive neighbor remains unknown.

In time, you will join glorious Austria.

Animal Husbandry research finishes, and Vienna discovers a source of horses within its borders! Unfortunately, the food situation is still pretty dire even after Ludwig finishes building the first farm, and he soon gets to work on another farm in the adjacent flood plain. Austrian scientists begin to research Writing, which implies their previous "science" was not peer-reviewed or properly cited.

Good news, we discover more civilized folk! A trireme off the northwestern coast identifies themselves as Huns, loyal to the immortal Attila, who frankly seems like a lovely chap. Everything points to the Huns originating from another land somewhere to the west. The continent has been mostly explored, and for now it's just Vienna, Tenochtitlan, and a ton of empty space (albeit a decent amount of said empty space is land that's total crap).

Meanwhile, Arnold and his men of the spear expertly dispatch barbarian archers roaming outside Vienna with almost no casualties. Vienna finishes the construction of a granary, and starts training a settler. As this suspends population growth anyways, Ludwig suspends his work on the new farm to build a silver mine. Another policy - oligarchy!

Arnold spearheads () a raiding party in the north, killing another group of barbarian archers and eliminating their snowbound encampment, razing it to the ground and looting the remains in the name of civilization. Elsewhere, Vienna purchases an archer unit, and God-Emperor Maria selects a man named Wolfgang to lead them. The scientist cabal, after figuring out how to write $#@! down, start researching Trapping. Montezuma proposes we establish embassies with each other, and in the name of diplomacy the God-Emperor graciously accepts.

    Sure thing bro!

Witness the Austrian Empire in all its glory!

It's not long before Attila learns that Austrians can finally write, and he proposes that we establish embassies in each other's capitals. We accept, and God-Emperor Maria discovers the Hunnic homeland is likely connected to the continental mainland via a thin stretch of land branching off the western coast.

Arnold clears another barbarian encampment in the northwestern snowlands, and at long last makes his way back to the homeland. Vienna finishes its settler, and Austria is ready to expand the glory of its borders. Wolfgang and his archers escort our settler on his trek across the desert toward the resource-rich southern jungle. Unfortunately, there's a barbarian encampment right where we want to build our new city, but Arnold is preoccupied with an encampment worryingly close to Vienna's western border. Wolfgang takes the initiative and wipes out the camp's defenders, then Sigmund moves in to clear the now-empty camp. Now that civilized folk have killed all the undesirables and destroyed their homes, our settler founds Austria's second city, Salzburg, along the eastern coast.

Arnold finishes up his own tussle with barbarians. In the south, Montezuma has built a second city, Teotihuacan, bizarrely close to his capital.

Montezuma thinks he's still playing vanilla and goes with the Infinite City Sprawl strategy.

Austria discovers a new social policy, Legalism.

Nothing says culture like a certified dank legal system.

On his journey west to scout Attila's territory, Sigmund discovers a Shoshone pathfinder, servants of the immortal Pocatello.

We exchange embassies and find their home is very close to Attila's.

Bro did you just forward settle my capital with your capital?

Attila immediately asks us to declare war against Pocatello. We politely decline. Not much later, Sigmund discovers the city of Paris, ruled by the immortal French ruler Napoleon Bonerparty.

...It's also very close to Moson Kahni. Not sure what happened here. While Austria founded Vienna in a fairly isolated area with plenty of open space, apparently other civilizations were not so lucky. Maybe our start isn't quite so bad as we thought.

Monty continues spamming cities, as Tlatelolco pops up right next to Tenochtitlan. Austrian scientists uncover the secrets of Bronze Working, and realize that the only sources of iron remotely close to Austria reside in the tundra and desert. In other news, Attila officially declares war on Pocatello, but the war lasts only a few turns until peace is made. Also, new social policy!

We officially meet our first city-state, Wittenberg, a religious city to the west of the Hun-Shoshone-France trio. Austria's new caravan, upon discovering there are no viable trade routes out of lonely Vienna, relocates to Salzburg and establishes a modest trade route with Tenochtitlan.

The city-state that's always open on third down.

In 1210 BC, Austria founds a religious pantheon dedicated to fertility rites.

    Hubba hubba!

Before too long, a new settler pops out of Vienna. There's a nice-ish spot on the edge of the desert on the western coast, southwest of Vienna and a little northwest of Salzburg, that has access to iron and some luxury resources. Unfortunately, due to some $#@!ty desert tiles and proximity to Salzburg, God-Emperor Maria ultimately orders the construction of the new Austrian city in a slightly sub-optimal location in terms of access to resources, sacrificing short-term gains for (hopeful) long-term success. Behold, the city of Graz! As a sidenote, due to Austria's ability to buy out city states, there's a good chance this is the last city we settle ourselves.

    A mere 180 turns.

A Polynesian scout off the coast of Salzburg introduces themselves, and their immortal ruler Kamehameha says hi. It turns out that Polynesia was the mystery civilization with the big-ass score. Their capital, Honolulu, is east of Salzburg and looks to be on a separate landmass.

"Before you ask, no - my name isn't from Dragon Ball."

Pocatello offers us some cocoa in exchange for our extra silver, a mutually beneficial arrangement to which we gladly agree. Happiness in the empire now sits at a comfortable +6, and a worker in Graz is building a cotton plantation that will connect an additional luxury resource to Austria to further boost happiness.

In 950 BC, Austrians everywhere stroke their beards as they discover Philosophy. Ever wary of Montezuma's presence, God-Emperor Maria decides it's time to research some military techs before Monty gets too eager. Austria adopts the Monarchy social policy next, which makes you wonder exactly what government has been ruling this place for the last three thousand years.

Big news! In 680 BC, Napoleon declares war on Pocatello. We'll see if anything comes of it... aaaand they make peace in 630 BC.

Biglier news! A large Aztec force is spotted moving north towards Austrian territory, and God-Emperor Maria hurriedly uses the gold she'd been saving for a library in Graz to upgrade all Austrian archers to composite bowmen. Thankfully the Aztec troops are not very technologically advanced, but they have lots of manpower. Looks like war is on the horizon...

    Uh oh.

TBH Aztecs are probably in for a rude surprise if they actually try anything funny. Seems like the way I play too, don't have much of a military, but have the ability to conjure one in a pinch if need be, and the AI really can't deal with that.

Yeah in my experience the AI is pretty terrible tactically. Easily the biggest downside of the 1UPT change.

Doesn't look like you have too many tile improvements, so I'm guessing the worst the Aztecs can do is just harass you for a while while you whittle down their guys. Good thing it's not Attila knocking on your door, those battering rams are assholes.

Also, I'm fully expecting the last unmet civ to be Shaka considering the other leaders so far. Was genuinely surprised when it was Kamehameha instead of, like, Alexander.

It takes so long to build tile improvements in marathon, that's what I'm most worried about. But honestly I don't remember AI civs doing much if any pillaging, I recall that being more of a barbarian thing.

    « Classical: Monty's Invasion »
    Classical Era: 560 BC - Montezuma's Invasion

Witness the Austrian Empire in all its glory!

Austria enters a timely golden age as Aztec troops continue to move north. Montezuma disregards Salzburg and Graz, heading straight for Vienna.

It was the best of times, it was the blurst of times.

In a shocking twist, Montezuma declares war on Austria.

    War were declared.

The blitzkrieg to Vienna throws off God-Emperor Maria (hereinafter referred to as "GEM"), and our troops are caught out of position with their pants down.

That said, I also wasn't expecting Monty to declare war with his own troops so badly out of position.

In retrospect, maybe I'd grown a bit too complacent than I ever should be with Montezuma as a neighbor, and making a (now plundered) trade route with Tenochtitlan was probably ... suboptimal , even if there had been no other options at the time. But enough crying over spilled milk; lettuce take a quick rundown of our military forces.

Arnold, a spearman stationed near Salzburg, the closest city to Aztec lands. The OG warrior, Arnold has seen plenty of combat killing barbarians.

Wolfgang, a composite bowman garrisoned in Graz. Our first archer who's had some light experience with barbarians.

Lukas, a composite bowman garrisoned in Vienna. Never seen combat before.

Tobias, a composite bowman garrisoned in Salzburg. Never seen combat before.

    ---

And now a look at Montezuma's invasion force.

5 Jaguars - Aztec unique unit that is roughly equivalent to a warrior that's better in forest and jungle. These likely pose little threat other than the possibility of pillaging the Austrian countryside, but they're in large enough numbers that they could still be a nuisance. (You can't see the fifth one in the pictures above.)

2 Catapults - Siege engines that could cause some real damage to our cities if they get a clean look. Priority targets for Austria.

1 Composite Bowman - Not as good as catapults at attacking cities, but still a dangerous ranged unit.

Johann Tserclaes - A Great General with a suspiciously Austrian-sounding name that gives a combat bonus to all nearby Aztec units.

    Time for some #chartz.

Hopefully this ends up being merely annoying, rather than devastating.

[Quick sidenote: in Civ 5, cities can execute ranged attacks against nearby enemy units. So when I say "Vienna attacks someone," that's what I'm referring to.]

The war starts well enough as Lukas and Vienna quickly pick off a Jaguar while the rest of the Aztecs are still trying to move into position around the city. GEM breathes a sigh of relief as Aztec forces don't seem interested in pillaging the Austrian hinterlands. Our precious improvements remain intact for at least the time being.

Two Jaguars attack Vienna, doing a largely inconsequential amount of damage to the city while taking a $#@!ton themselves. One of the Jaguars, previously injured by Lukas, dies in the ill-conceived assault. That's two Jaguars down already, and one severely injured.

Lukas and Vienna greatly damage an Aztec catapult which juuuust barely survives with a sliver of health, and Wolfgang attacks the other catapult from the rear. Vienna's defenses start taking some real damage from Aztec forces which attack with a shockingly reckless ferocity, devastating their own troops in the process. Wolfgang finishes off the first catapult, then Lukas and Vienna destroy the other. Arnold and Tobias are still trying to get into useful tactical position, neither having faced any combat yet in the war.

From the initial invasion force (5 Jaguars, 2 catapults, 1 bowman, 1 Great General), two of the Jaguars and both catapults are gone, with one of the surviving Jaguars injured and another on death's door.

Vienna's defenses get seriously low as the relentless Aztec assault continues, including two Jaguar kamikaze attacks. With both catapults gone, the composite bowman is by far the most dangerous remaining threat, and between him and the suicidal Jaguars Vienna comes dangerously close to falling. Tobias and Arnold finally join the fray and take him out, Lukas kills the last Jaguar, and Wolfgang assassinates Johann Tserclaes. Despite the close call on Vienna, at the end of the day the Aztec forces have been crushed with no Austrian casualties.

    We did it! Goddamn maniacs.

After a resounding defeat, Montezuma offers peace. Normally in this spot I'd press for some concessions here, but Monty apparently has literally zero gold and zero resources to offer, so I accept a simple peace treaty. I have to say, I'm scratching my head at Monty's strategy here. With a better organized attack, he probably could have taken at least one of Graz or Salzburg, but instead he risked it for the biscuit with a poorly organized kamikaze attack on faraway Vienna and ended up crippling himself. Then again, not like you can really expect anything else from the AI. I wonder how long it'll take before he invades again.

Good luck paying me back on your zero dollars a year salary plus benefits, babe!

GEM orders Vienna to begin construction on the Hanging Gardens. Austria's golden age comes to an end in 350 BC, and Salzburg finishes building a chariot archer (led by Nikola) that it began training at the very beginning of the war, lolmarathon. Nikola is tasked with keeping an eye on the Aztec border, but for now Monty's military is going to have a few rebuilding seasons before they're even remotely a threat again.

During the war, in the midst of everything else going on, we also met the last two mystery civilizations. A Persian trireme, and later a Spanish one, appeared by the Salzburg coast to say howdy then peace out. Looks like these two are on another continent with Kamehameha.

Ha, though that was a bit anti-climatic. Too bad actually going and doing something about the invaders isn't the most productive course of action, unless you're literally fueled by petty revenge.

An inland capital on a peninsula sandwiched between a tundra and desert. Yikes. Initial ring looked pretty good with a plains river system, and oasis, but it really just went from mediocre to worse. Rough expands too, but not really sure where you could go that would've been much better. It's against AI though so you should be fine.

Yeah, though I'd like to be a little more prepared for any future invasion(s). With even slightly better planning (unlikely given how incompetent the AI is at war, but still), he could have done some real damage this time, and it's not like he's ever gonna stop spamming units. Though with how shambolic his economy (and probably science) is right now, probably relatively safe for awhile.

Yep. There's room to the north, but the land is all worthless. And there's a huge desert right in the middle of our peninsula. I guess I could try going for Petra in Vienna, not sure how viable that is at this point though.

also, I went ahead and spoilered the images in previous updates

Bypassing your two "border" cities entirely and going straight for your capital, not bothering to pillage at all, not really organizing the attack at all, and the jaguars just going ham for Vienna.

Guess they reworked the definition of Flower Wars to make self-sacrifice acceptable, eh

-edit- If Monty was making zero gold after all his dudes died, you wonder if he just decided that was the quickest way to stop paying for their upkeep while trying for a hero shot at the same time.

Reading too much mafia lately I thought you meant wall posting and I was like "What's that going to do to stop the Aztecs?!" before realizing you meant the actual city improvement.

    Classical Era: 450 BC

Witness the Austrian Empire in all its glory!

After the (First?) Aztec War, 530-460 BCE, we finally have the opportunity to send a scout out to sea. Sigmund officially makes introductions with Kabul, a cultured city-state that is practically on Vienna's doorstep despite being on a separate landmass.

Look Maria I get it, I don't know the names of my neighbors either.

Isabella offers a declaration of friendship, but GEM declines. Lady, we barely know you. We establish a sea trade route with Kabul for some dank cash - let's just say that after the war and subsequent destruction of our trade route with Tenochtitlan, Austria is in no rush to trade with Aztecs. Nikola and his chariot archers scout along the Aztec borders, and as far as he can tell there's not much of a military presence, so we should be comfortable for awhile. Also, somehow Teotihuacan still has only 1 population after all this time, wtf lol. Remember Teotihuacan was settled around the same time as Salzburg, literally thousands of years ago. In contrast, by 220 BC Salzburg officially became the most populous city in Austria. What on earth is Montezuma feeding the people of Teotihuacan?!

Sigmund meets another cultured city-state, Prague.

Naturally, they greet him with a ten minute guitar solo, but Sigmund's never been much of a fan of prog rock.

Our peace treaty with Montezuma expires, though his shambolic military and economy prevent him from being a threat anytime soon. We encounter yet another cultured city-state, Bucharest.

After that, we complete the Tradition social policy tree.

Behold, Austria's first wonder: the Hanging Gardens of Vienna!

The truncated description makes it sound hilariously pointless, but the wonder also grants Vienna a significant food bonus. The free garden increases the generation of Great People in Vienna by 25%.

While exploring the eastern continent, Sigmund dies in 120 AD after being ambushed by a relentless barbarian archer that he couldn't shake. RIP.

In the meantime, Monty's treasury contains 0 gold and his economy is generating a whopping -7 gold per turn. He doesn't have much of a military, and I didn't pillage anything during the war. What the $#@! is going on over there?

Attila asks us to declare war on Pocatello. Nah bro, I'm good. Then Napoleon asks us to declare war on Pocatello. Nah bro, I'm good (glgl Pocatello). As the logical endpoint of these political shenanigans, Attila declares war on ... Montezuma. The Hunnic military is easily the most formidable force in the world, and the Aztecs are looking vulnerable at the moment, so I'm not crazy about this development. I'm a lot more comfortable with a buffer between Attila and glorious Austria. With any luck, those two will keep each other busy for awhile and that's it.... Aaaand not even that happens, as they make peace only a few turns later. It's been a long time since I've played Civ, is this normal? Been happening a lot this game. Whatever happened, Attila's military power tumbled. Maybe Montezuma became a tactical genius since our war with him. Maybe it was Johann Tserclaes who bungled the invasion. But here's my number, so call me maybe.

Sigmund II pops out of Vienna and heads out into the world. Isabella asks once again for friendship; we once again decline. It's the same turn I notice this $#@!.

    Oh, you $#@!.

The $#@!ing audacity to ask for a declaration of friendship right after that. An Austrian advisor asks the God Emperor whether she plans to burn Seville to the ground at some point in the future. Her response:

In other news, Monty is now losing 10 gold per turn. I vaguely remember negative gold being disastrous for human players, but apparently that doesn't apply to the AI? I'm really not sure how it's even possible for him to be losing this much tbh, not like his sorry ass nation has that many expenses.

GEM sells off our extra silver to Darius of Persia for +7 gold per turn. Vienna builds a horseman, led by Jakob, which yeets towards our border cities as Vienna yeets towards Petra.

The penalties for human players are that if you're in the red gold-wise, they take it out of your science per turn, and if *that* falls long enough, military units start disbanding. You're playing on King difficulty which gives the AI minor bonuses; I'm guessing part of this is related to gold penalties. Let's split the difference and say he takes the science hit but doesn't have to worry about his guys disbanding.

After finishing our research into Civil Service, that concludes the Classical Era. Lettuce take a quick look at the current situation.

Civil Service is stupid good in Civ 5, boosting farm output is super important because more food = more science = more winning.

Going to try something different with the next update.

Sorry for the radio silence, haven't been playing much Civ recently (partly because my play sessions almost always end when the game decides to crash... )
