And we're closed, with this roster just shy of 40

So reveals are gonna be quite long, prob with some skipping in the low scorers. I'm tentatively looking at weekday afternoons/evenings, say Wednesdays at 4pm Pacific / 7pm eastern. Lmk if that works/doesn't work/any strong preferences.

    Hype!!

I probably won't be able to make reveals during the week until the semester is over, but I hope they're fun! I'll follow the thread results after the fact.

    1. Amuse-Bouche

An amuse-bouche serves to excite the palate. I want you to excite my ears with some trippy soundscapes. Give me your beeps, your boops, your fuzzy textures yearning to glitch free. My ears want to be fully engrossed in compelling noises, beats, shapes, patterns, textures, abstract sculptures of sound. A surprising range of [sub]genres can hit this sweet spot, but most on-the-nose examples are some flavor of electronica.

Tasting notes: crisp, percussive, glitchy, crackly, trippy, textured, clicks, bubbly, crunchy, asmr

Pairings: prosecco or other sparkling beverages, tart berries, sharp cheeses, salty crackers, poprocks

    The Bel-Air-Izer vs Deadmau5 - Animal Rights

Look mom I found a moose in the wild.

    4.5 + .5 = 5.0
    Moose

    38th
    dltzk - 52 blue mondays

ah. this is not quite for me. the vocals kinda turn me off and while I can enjoy some of the breakbeat stuff it's not really something I'd come back to. I like the last 20 seconds most lol

    5.1 + 0.5 = 5.6
    LordQuas

    37th
Vince Staples - Crabs In A Bucket

eh, this doesn't stand out to me at all, the backing effects are just repetitive and neither main vocal section does much for me. kinda just forgettable :/

    5.3 + 0.5 = 5.8
    Schiavetto

    36th
    Hinkik & A Himitsu - Realms

This is a little generic and doesn't do super innovative sound things imo, not super unpleasant but doesn't do much for me.

    5.8 + .5 = 6.3
    Ace Marvel

    35th
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - The Donkey-Headed Adversary Of Humanity Opens The Discussion

That album cover?? That artist name and track name?? What. What am I getting myself into here......okay these vocals aren't quite my style but I don't hate this, it's chaotic and I'm not sure I understand it. Not great as far as catfit tbh, it's certainly *engaging* though. I actually love the instrumental section at 3 minutes in, and some of the parts that develop afterward.

    5.9 + .5 = 6.4
    soah

    34th
CLOCK DVA - The Hacker (****MAJOR FLASHING WARNING FOR VIDEO LINK****)

....happy halloween?? this has a very spooky vibe. It's got a nice beat but as far as the cat goes it's kinda too fuzzy/not *crisp* -- it could be almost more of a Soup fit but generally doesn't do a ton for me.

    6.0 + .5 = 6.5
    hollowkatt

    33rd
    Grouplove - Deadline

Catchy and entertaining, but not a great catfit and ultimately rather generic -- not in a bad way, this is the kind of song I would save and jam to from time to time but it just doesn't particularly stand out.

    6.1 + .5 = 6.6
    shubaka17

    32nd
    Infected Mushroom - Converting Vegetarians

I shouldn't be surprised to see IM in this cat should I huh. These farty effects are...not my favorite, sorry. Some parts of this track are more tolerable though and it does fit the cat.

    6.2 + .5 = 6.7
    Macdougall

    31st
    Watsky - Fireworks

Hi Knights. Fireworks noises I guess fit the bill lol, unfortunately I can't bring myself to enjoy Watsky much. Still fairly fun track oh god why is this child talking at the end

    6.3 + .5 = 6.8
    KnightsofCydonia

    30th
Diablo Swing Orchestra - Mass Rapture

I've liked what I've heard from DSO but don't think this is one I've heard so you get the bonus. It is chaotically entertaining as expected but not really a vibe I'm looking for in this cat specifically or that I seek out often in general.

    6.8 + .5 = 7.3
    KarmaDope

    29th
GUNSHIP - CTHULHU (feat. Corin Hardy)

Huh this is a bit much imo. It's certainly *a* vibe. It's definitely cool in parts but don't think this was the category for it.

    7.1 + .5 = 7.6
    Logic

    28th
Shane Rogers - A Tale of Six Trillion Years and a Night

Sounds like vgm or something adjacent? It's a pretty hype tune but the timbres don't excite me.

    7.2 + .5 = 7.7
    ignoramus

    27th
    Vagabond - Greenskeepers

Whoa this slaps though. I can't help but tap my feet and bop my head like the vibecat. Unfortunately doesn't hold up a ton on subsequent listens and while the bass is nice it falls sorta flat on category fit.

    7.3 + .5 = 7.8
    Owner Of A Lonely Heart

that's the bottom third, sorry am behind a bit in posting here. more to come!

    26th ** rescored, moved to tie with 15th **
Lydmor - If You Want Capacity

Had to find a different link for this, should be right I hope. The synths and beat are rather nice and her voice meshes well; the effect in the last minute is cool too. Ultimately it's good but not as ~innovative~ as some other subs wrt the category. Idk might be robbing.

    7.4 + .5 = 7.9
    Viggorous

    25th
Wave Racer - Flash Drive (feat. B▲by)

    .....huh. Video says v a p o r w a v e but music says...idk futurebass or whatever this is. Enjoyable in a zoomer-kitschy way.

    7.5 + .5 = 8.0
    Newcomb

    24th
    Moses Sumney - Cut Me

Huh. I can't say this is what I was expecting for this cat but it's pretty nice. Got some really cool panning and various background things that hold my interest, behind an already pleasant main melody. I really dig the brass especially. Oddly this would fit both cats 3 and 6 more than this one I think? But really really cool stuff, I'm intrigued by this artist.

    7.6 + .5 = 8.1
    Shad

    23rd
    Iglooghost - Super Ink Burst

Ok this is really fun and there's a lot going on. Ultimately maybe too much? There are parts I like, the ...clarinet? sax? is lovely, but generally don't know how to feel about the degree of maximalism. I'm like... p sure I'm robbing this, I can't settle on where it should land.

    7.7 + .5 = 8.2
    Made

    22nd
    Three Trapped Tigers - Engrams

Hi Amy. This is pretty cool tbh. It's a little loose on the catfit if I'm being honest but it's definitely something I enjoy.

    7.8 + .5 = 8.3
    Ampharos

    21st
    Mid-Air Thief - "왜? (Why?)"

This track definitely does some cool stuff with sound but somehow doesn't really captivate me a ton? I think it's the more calm vibe of the vocals, though the second half gets more active and has me bouncing a bit. Mrrrr I'm robbing this arent I

    7.9 + .5 = 8.4
    Godot

    20th
    Ravyn Lenae - Venezuela Trains

Groovin beat and a silky voice. The production on this is fantastic, the layering in the last minute would also make it great for cat 3 but the beats are def what I'm looking for here so nice pick.

    8.0 + .5 = 8.5
    Adam

    19th
Brother Android - The Stars Come Out

...think this is Ranmilia? I'm pretty sure I remember listening to this after you linked something from the album. Gonna be pedantic and leave off the bonus. But it's great. Super chill, like listening to the tide at night, and I love the little tremolos. Just... this is really calming.

    8.6 + 0 = 8.6
    Ranmilia

    Tied for 17th
Mid-Air Thief - "쇠사슬 (Ahhhh, These Chains!)"

Heh, two subs from this artist and oddly enough on my randomized list they were the very first and very last songs I listened to on my first runthrough. I like this one more than the other for the cat. There are some pretty nice sounds in this but also some I find irritating. I don't love the vocals or the distorted-y stuff in the beginning, but the strings and plinks are nice and it gets better as it goes. I LOVE the part at 3:17 hhh okay this was a journey and I like it more on further listening.

    8.3 + .5 = 8.8
    Esooa

    Tied for 17th
    Burial - Archangel

Mmmmm yes. This is a good pick. I'm certain I've heard this before, just familiar enough to miss the bonus sorry. The vocal effects are a bit of an acquired taste for me but maybe one I've actually acquired? at least in this context with the fantastic percussion and stuff going on.

    8.8 + 0 = 8.8
    staypositivefriend

    16th
hitori tori - we need blips

Oh you know it we sure $%#!in do. In the end this doesn't grip me, it feels like it kinda just exists to exist and doesn't really have much intentionality or feeling to it? Like stuff is just happening for no reason and it ends up sounding....samey as it goes on, oddly enough.

    8.4 + .5 = 8.9
    BLOODYRAIN10001

    15th
    [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4bbcnrekOo]Ultraísta - Tin King[/url[

Hmm. I don't super love the vocal singing the same note for a while, but this piece does certainly build into a nice creation. The production and fullness/lushness of the sound as it builds is pretty entrancing. Def got bumped up after a couple listens.

    8.5 + .5 = 9.0
    Sloonei

    ADDENDUM Tie for 15th (Rescore)
Lydmor - If You Want Capacity

**RESCORE with full version:** Alright the extra couple minutes actually bop, there's nice beats that do make it a stronger catfit. I love the little drop at 3:56 and as a whole composition it's definitely engaging. Bumping up to:

    8.5 + .5 = 9.0
    Viggorous

    14th

Aaaaaaaaaa gotta go fassst this makes me want to bounce around like a hyperactive child

Sadly think this one just barely misses qualifying as unfamiliar, though I def forgot this record existed lol. Absolutely need to go back to it bc it's more my thing nowadays. Awesome fit. Also I don't even need to say who I think subbed this lol

    9.2 + 0 = 9.2

    Tied for 11th
    SOPHIE - BIPP

I was only vaguely aware of SOPHIE's music before I heard of her passing, RIP. Definitely good stuff, though not quite the sort of thing I typically seek out. This, as the kids say, slaps.

    8.8 + .5 = 9.3
    Sunbae

    Tied for 11th
    Lindsay Lowend - GT40

Alright this is a bop lol. There's a bunch of different components almost seamlessly collaged together and it's just fun.

    8.8 + .5 = 9.3

Oooooooh. This is dark and brooding and glitchy in all the right ways.

    8.9 + .5 = 9.4

    9th
I Am Robot And Proud - Center Cities

This is really nice in a more low-key way, it's not chaotic like a lot of the other subs, but has a lot of pleasant and crisp components that are nicely arranged. It feels good on my brain. Something I'd come back to for sure.

    9.0 + .5 = 9.5
    MyNameIsNothing

    8th

Yep. This is the kind of stuff I'm looking for. It maintains my interest throughout, and the slower section is a nice contrast as well.

    9.1 + .5 = 9.6
    gbsfranca

    7th
    Anna Meredith - R-Type

Holy $%#! this is cool. I'm a simp for cello in any context lol and as a whole this is just a really fun composition. Actually reminds me a ton of Battles -- quite a bit in actual sound but even more so in the stylistic vibes of like, the dedication to the craft, making love to their instruments and just having a hell of a good time.

    9.2 + .5 = 9.7
    vanity.

    6th
    Lorenzo Senni - XBreakingEdgeX

Oohh this is cool. It's a bit on the abrasive side but definitely compelling. Really grew on me a couple listens in. Ended up moving significantly higher than I originally had it tbh, really great sub.

Buckling in for 14 minutes of Tangycore hype. I should check out more Autechre, this is hitting a lot of qualities I like. When it gets going it's pretty decidedly awesome.

Great reveal, many albums to download and lots of awesome music suitable for future gaming sessions. If the reveals are of similar length in the future, this fits into my schedule absolutely perfectly!

This is the single edit version of the song which is nearly 3 minutes shorter than the album version that I sent

Edit: and the composition of the song is altogether different. There's even some of the instruments omitted on the single version.

Had to find a different link for this, should be right I hope. The synths and beat are rather nice and her voice meshes well; the effect in the last minute is cool too. Ultimately it's good but not as ~innovative~ as some other subs wrt the category. Idk might be robbing.
This is the single edit version of the song which is nearly 3 minutes shorter than the album version that I sent

Edit: and the composition of the song is altogether different. There's even some of the instruments omitted on the single version.
Ohhh no the video wasn't available for me and i thought the one i found would be the same, sorry!! I can look for the album version and give it a re-eval.

That'd be very cool, I think the album version is more interesting at least. I believe it can be found on SoundCloud or Spotify in the OG version

**RESCORE with full version:** Alright the extra couple minutes actually bop, there's nice beats that do make it a stronger catfit. I love the little drop at 3:56 and as a whole composition it's definitely engaging. Bumping up to 8.5 base/9.0 total (tieing 15th).

Apologies again for missing out on the correct version, it is in fact better lol and adjusting your score accordingly.

A reminder that for Category 2 (Bread and Butter) you are permitted/encouraged to include a brief writeup contextualizing your own personal connection with the song -- only about a third of you did, so thought I'd give the rest another chance to append them. I can't guarantee it will affect your score at all lol but it is cool to get further understanding of the selections for those comfortable sharing (and I'll share them in the reveals unless you request to keep it private). I'll accept them up until the day before reveal, which *may* be as soon as late next week because I'm crazy, but not sure yet.

    2. Bread and Butter

What's better than freshly baked bread? The warm scent that brings you cozy memories of a home kitchen, tearing open the crust to get to the soft, fluffy interior... makes you just want to climb inside and take a nap. Send a song that brings you comfort, or makes you nostalgic for your childhood or an earlier time -- whether it's something tied to a specific sentimental memory, or associated with an unrealized daydream you long for, or simply is a song that you've been intimately familiar with since you were young and holds a special place in your heart. I obviously can't really judge catfit on this one since it's subjective and based on your experience -- hope I don't hurt too many feelings with robs. On that note, I might as well say $%#! it with anonymity for this cat and allow you to send in a writeup that contextualizes your personal connection to the song, so do that if you like.

Tasting notes: warm, sentimental, nostalgic, comforting, familiar, cozy, soft

Pairings: :joy_butter:, fresh herbs, roasted garlic, flaky sea salt, extra-virgin olive oil

Dan Zanes & Friends feat. Rankin' Don And The Rocket Ship Singers - Father Goose
Lol what it's children's...oh god whatever this is I don't remotely enjoy even one single component of it. The kids' voices are just bad and everything else is supremely cringey. This is. Unlistenable lmao. If this is what you listened to in your childhood I'm sorry. For your childhood. Half a point for uh, the audacity of sending this.

heh, this is. not my genre. the fiddle is kinda nice tbh! but the twaaaaang
    4.2 + 0.5 = 4.7
    Shad
Shad's writeup: This is the stuff inevitably playing on the radio while we putzed around my uncle's barns all summer, reeking of motor oil and trying to be useful while we wondered how grown-ups always manage to find so much work to do. And pop country never gets walrus love.

    37th Place:
    Marty Robbins - Big Iron
ah yes this reminds me of my past life as a gunslingin' outlaw. lol jk but this does strike me as something you almost *need* a childhood memory of to even connect with at all, it does nothing for me on its own
    4.8 + 0.5 = 5.3
    hollowkatt
hollowkatt's writeup: Short write-up: When I was young my dad used to play guitar and sing this to me to help me fall asleep. He had a deep baritone voice that worked perfectly to get me sleeping.

lmao. okay i can't really say i don't at least enjoy this a little bit.

    35th Place:
Linkin Park - Points Of Authority
Never really connected with Linkin Park, but even their general sound conveys a tinge of memory of its time period. The song itself doesn't particularly do anything I enjoy.

    KarmaDope

    34th Place:
Evelyn "Champagne" King - Love Come Down
This totally faded into the background for me aside from some mindless foot-tapping, nothing about it stands out or sticks with me at all, it's just...disco. and it's a bit too repetitive for too long
    6.0 + 0.5 = 6.5
    MyNameIsNothing
MNIN's writeup: a slice of white bread with a bit of butter was always my favorite part of any spaghetti dinner as a kid, a vessel for any extra sauce, so had to throw it back with a track that reminds me of my mom! she would always always blast music when cooking dinner/cleaning/in the car, definitely have her to thank for my love of music today. our relationship has always been pretty rocky, but hearing this song just takes me back to the best moments with her! she was never much of a singer, but would always wail over her favorite disco hits, never quite hitting the right note lol. the single mom listens to disco -> gay pipeline is very real and i feel she also fueled my later interest in house and dance music~ "love come down" is $%#!ing timeless, and it'll always hold a special place in my heart!

i have a whole playlist of tracks she always played (that i still love today, i will never listen to the doors again because of how much she played them in my youth lol) that you can skim through if u want, any track from here is a viable sub for this cat!

    33rd Place:
Robert Lamm - Watching The Time
For some reason this makes me feel like I'm in like... a dimly lit fancy hotel bar in the heat of summer?? I don't know if I can explain that but it's a vibe lol. As a song...meh?
    6.1 + 0.5 = 6.6
    Owner Of A Lonely Heart
Owner's writeup: This was just one of the songs my Dad would play during car rides. I really enjoy it.

    32nd Place:
Proyecto Uno ft. Magic Juan - Pumpin'
While neither your writeup nor this genre is personally relatable to me, it's definitely evocative of a specific vibe and does its job in transporting my imagination. I wanna get drunk and dance all of a sudden. It goes on doing the same thing a little too long to maintain my interest but I suppose that's the place/purpose of this style of music -- sorta not suited for walrus judging tbh.
    6.2 + 0.5 = 6.7
    Guillotina
Guillo's writeup: You’d ask, why a tropical Spanglish song makes me nostalgic? Cause it represents the happiest era of my life, when I had no worries about the world and I just hung out with friends and girlfriends and we just had a great time. A time where friends stuck around whether you were broke or you had money to spend on drinks and partying, a time where I adopted a new family, a family that I eventually lost when I moved to this country looking for a better future.

    31st Place:

That's so 70s! Hard for me to connect with personally, but at least the bass is groovin.

    30th Place:

    29th Place:
Fleetwood Mac - You Make Loving Fun
How much flak am I going to get for marking this unfamiliar? I've actually never listened to this album in full lol. The harmonies and bass are nice but the main vocals and shape of the song don't pull me in. But I can imagine it being the sort of thing to connect to a memory for sure.
    6.9 + 0.5 = 7.4
    schadd
schadd's writeup: a friend and i listened to this song a bunch together when we were in high school. the song has a naturally reminiscent feel, it works for me as a mental anchor to the good things that were going on for me at that time

    28th Place:
Dot Hacker - Whatever You Want
For whatever reason this song isn't sticking to me, it's like *fine* but makes very little impression on me in its execution. I don't dislike it, but it's...just kinda there.
    7.0 + 0.5 = 7.5
    Ampharos
Amy's writeup: a very good song subbed to one of my older walruses by an old friend. helps that the song itself has a bit of a nostalgic feel as well.

    27th Place:
Soda Stereo - En la Ciudad de la Furia
Well this sure is very 80s sounding lol. The lyrics are about Buenos Aires with pretty evocative imagery so I can see how this would be meaningfully tied to memory-as-place. As much as it fades into generic synthpop to me, it's a rather pretty song and does carry some vicarious nostalgia.

Go Betweens - Streets of Your Town
From the writeup I see that this is special to lots of people from Brisbane, great pick for the cat in that sense. The song definitely has a nostalgic vibe and somehow I can forge an association to early childhood memories of car rides and taking in the surroundings of the area I grew up in.
    7.3 + 0.5 = 7.8
    Macdougall
Mac's writeup: This song is by the most beloved Brisbane band that exists. As a child it notably featured on a filler TV commercial on a regional TV station with scenescapes of the towns in the viewing area. When I hear this song I VIVIDLY recall that commercial and it takes me straight back to my old home in the early 90s, the smells, the heat. Whichever producer at Prime Television made that decision left an indelible mark on tens of thousands of people. It doesn't hurt that they are one of the greatest Australian bands ever and this is arguably in the top 5 Australian song of all time.

They are Australia's best answer to Joy Division. Better than The Church and better than Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. Oh and they have a bridge in Brisbane named after them.
Read the YT comments for more vibes.

    25th Place:
    IU(아이유) _ eight(에잇) (Prod.&Feat. SUGA of BTS)
very powerful writeup, thank you. the song's upbeat-ness doesn't detract from the genuine emotionality of it. however it's ultimately somewhat generic musically
    7.4 + 0.5 = 7.9
    Ace Marvel
Ace's writeup: This is song has such a deep meaning for me, IU makes song related to her age at the time in this case eight is about 28, we share the same age. And although this song was released in 2020, it brings me back because of the message, the main topic is memories, somewhere we can be forever young and happy, and good byes don’t exists.

Not confirmed by her, but the song is believe to be about Sulli and Jonghyun, to idols that committed suicide, because of online bulling, as someone that has experience loss my self, for years I used music as a way to let out emotions about that topic, but until I listened to this, I found away to express them through happiness.

The part of so are you happy now? Is pretty deep, because is a double message, because is a message to her friends, to know if there are at peace, but also to the haters, to see if they are happy they achieved what they wanted and the are no longer here, but and this is a big but, jokes on them, because they will always live in the memory of the people that loved them, and this apply to everyone I have lost. So this song is not only a good one in my opinion, but emotional wise is one of the best song ever written to me. Even in comes from a dark moment this song expresses comfort and happiness.

    24th Place:
Alabama - I'm in a Hurry (And Don't Know Why)
This is not a type of music I would seek out, and yet I get from it an odd sense of nostalgia for decades I didn't experience lol. The vocal harmonies are quite nice.

There's a lot going on in this, it's captivating and fun. Of all the components I think the piano strikes me as most sentimental.

    Esooa

    22nd Place:
The Be Good Tanyas- Ship Out on the Sea
I almost feel like I should enjoy this a bit more than I do? Idk I like the banjo and stuff but the airy vibrato-y vocal style doesn't quite do it for me. Generally sweet and chill vibe though.
    7.7 + 0.5 = 8.2
    Sentenza

    21st Place:
fastball - G.O.D. (Good Old Days)
Sounds like 90s radio fodder but with the horns elevating it quite a bit -- that's really the highlight. Dooters go doot.
    7.8 + 0.5 = 8.3
    KnightsofCydonia
KoC's writeup: it's an old favorite from my high school years

    20th Place:
Jack Johnson - Do You Remember
The "young love" vibes of this sorta remind me of "5 Years Time" by Noah and the Whale but from the later perspective instead. It's really sweet in evoking a love that has lasted and is felt in the smallest details. Jack Johnson's style somehow isn't quite my thing but the vibes work.
    7.9 + 0.5 = 8.4

    8.1 + 0.5 = 8.6
    Made
    Made's writeup: anemoia - n. nostalgia for a time you’ve never known

    17th Place:
    Autechre - Rae
Ahhh I'm gonna enjoy having your Autechre subs in every cat lol. It's sort of hard for me to get out of the Cat 1 headspace for it though. But I like it, and this particular category is hardest for me to judge on "catfit" rather than my enjoyment, so. Cool stuff that I *wish* I could have a nostalgic connection with.
    8.3 + 0.5 = 8.8
    Tangrowth

    16th Place:
Gregory and the Hawk - Oats We Sow
This is one I've heard before, it's simple and pretty. I adore the flute and voice, but there's something about the piano/guitar parts that brings it down a notch.
    8.9 + 0 = 8.9

    Tied for 14th Place:
Ramshackle Glory - Your Heart Is A Muscle The Size Of Your Fist
Familiar with this one from my folk-punk phase, it's a great sample of the raw expressiveness of the genre and conveys its message powerfully. Strong choice
    9.0 + 0 = 9.0
    staypositivefriend

    Tied for 14th Place:
Pain of Salvation - Road Salt
This sounds emotional, the juxtaposition of the vocals and synths is unique, and then the bridge section is really cool, as a whole package it somehow doesn't entirely click for me though it did grow on me a bit. Your writeup is heartbreaking though wtf With how expressive the singer is I can imagine how this can be rough to hear if tied to a memory.
    8.5 + 0.5 = 9.0
    roro__b
dobby's writeup: So this song isn't from my earliest childhood, but it's one of those that I struggle to listen to because of what it's tied to, probably one of those that bring back the most memories, from the band I used to play with, the girl I loved, the times we spent alone singing and playing this song, being just fully absorbed by the power of that moment and our voices together. I could probably write a full book about this.

Oh $%#! this song lmao. Everything I've heard by this band is legit banger territory. I don't have a direct association and yet it does really make me miss the days of weekend nights hanging out with college friends and just being goofy and affectionate.
    9.1 + 0 = 9.1
    shubaka17
shub's writeup: i'm really sorry for sending a song that everyone's heard, but this is the only song i want to send here. the opening guitar strum, the meaningless lyrics, the fact that the chorus has that weird $%#! crescendo that reminds me of . this song is perfectly timed that when you enter the Bolio gate at my college you put this song on, and when you're pulling into the same spot i always parked in the song fades out. every time it comes on shuffle it just reminds me of coming home after a great night with my friends. many a night spent fumbling around the back with not one seat belt on, many a night with your hands on my cheeks and your shoulder in my mouth

    Tied for 11th Place:

    heh. yeah okay fair. this sure is.....what it is. definitely nostalgic and just, a good example of an extremely popular song that is actually deserving of it tbh. it's good. that instrumental interlude aaaa ;_;
    9.2 + 0 = 9.2
    ignoramus
igno's writeup: I submitted that song because it helped me to sleep really quickly, and it still does tbh
It also reminded me of times when I never thought of myself as anything but a girl (someone who went by she/her, since as a child I only thought 2 genders existed and everyone was straight) and I never needed to worry about possibly getting kicked out if I told my parents who I really am.
It's also a bonding song for me and my dad because he likes this song too. Maybe that's one of the many reasons I'm more comfy with my dad than my mom.

    Tied for 11th Place:

At first it's like, okay this is simple but effective, nice guitar etc. Then it goes nuts halfway through lol, got my attention for sure. I was afraid I was gonna use the word "generic" again lolme but by the end of the song it really made a deeper impression.

    8.8 + 0.5 = 9.3
    Ranmilia
Ran's writeup: The track in question should be Slipping Into Ash-Filled Streets, from the album Neon Impasse, by the artist City Girl.

The artist's own narrative description of the album follows: (feel free to omit this during the reveal, or cut it down to the last paragraph, though I like the whole thing)

"As the sun finally burrows its way into bed, you leave Ji-eun's apartment, finding the empty street outside lost in mist. You know your way back home but you don't take it.

Throughout the city you find velvet gardens draped in the colors of nearby shop windows and cafes. The tender stare of a stranger, their face illuminated by phone light from below and street lamps from above. The steps you take start to melt into one another, softly being enveloped by some unknown force that carries you forward.

The night blooms further, the light becomes more and more neon. The skyline turns obsidian and the same old doubts replay in your head. But the momentum of something greater than yourself pushes you forward. Into and then back out of the lights of different entrances, effecting your egress into the night over and over again.

You lose track of time, slipping into ash filled streets farther from the center of the city. Outskirts where all color has been lost save for the silver rain of moonlight. An empty palette, a lake of mercury and ash, obsidian and velvet. Would any life have been lived the same as yours, City Girl?"

This album is relatively recent (2018), but the recurring dream is as old as I can remember: being a lone ghost wandering a silent, monochrome city, filled only with ash, rainwater and the flickering ghosts of skyscrapers.

I, too, am relatively recent, despite being ancient by internet standards. In many respects I did not exist before 2018; in some aspects not until later still. I've played this album several hundred times, at least.

I used to think that I was alone in the world, in my head. That there was no 'me,' only a featureless ghost puppeteering a body and fleeing two inevitable destinies. Not a real person. No one else thought like I thought, felt like I felt, whether in life or fiction.

An empty palette, a lake of mercury and ash, obsidian and velvet. Would any life have been lived the same as mine?

At this point you're probably thinking 'oh, so this is a trans thing,' and you're half right - the color scheme City Girl uses for her album art is not unintentional - but only half. The dream runs deeper than that, but it does so in ways that cannot be so easily put into words.

The dream is reflected in this song. (In the entire album, really, but 40 minutes is perhaps a bit long for a walrus that already is chock-full of participants.) A simple, hypnotic melody reflected and re-reflected between tape and synth and piano and the ticking of a clock, as it walks and floats through the streets, tracing the flakes of ash as they gently float by.

Music to get lost to, dissolution in mercury and ash. To slip into somewhere else, liminal and eternal, as the momentum of something greater than yourself pushes you forward.

Would any life have been lived the same as mine?

    The Hush Sound - Molasses
Bouncy and fun, great voice too. Can't really think of anything else to say just that I enjoy the song lol.

wow. $%#!, this one really hits hard. love is worry indeed

    gbsfranca
gbs's writeup: This song is part of a 10-track medley, so the intro and outro are pretty much cut off. It particularly touches me because, as an introvert, I have always struggled to let my parents know how much I love them, and it has gotten even harder as I moved out for university last semester. Listening to this encourages me to be vocal about my feelings and cherish all the memories I have with them now, because it's when it matter the most. It's bittersweet, so let's associate it with some Christmas morning spiced bread...

    7th Place:
The Floor Is Made Of Lava - Traditional 84
Ahhh themes like this can really get to me emotionally (nostalgia for the innocence of childhood, finding your place as an adult, managing expectations, uhhhh gifted burnout syndrome....). Really expressive vocalist and nice rhythms, I really dig this song.
    9.2 + 0.5 = 9.7
    Viggorous
Viggo's writeup: The song, or in fact the whole record (which you should definitely check out if you like the song, especially "Lost in the woods" and "place in the sun) is about growing up in a "safe" and comfortable environment and not knowing where to go or what to do when you grow up, the disillusionment of growing up, how the magic disappears.
It's a song (album) that resonated/resonates a lot with me both when I was younger but also today, still feeling that adapting to a "normal" adult existence is difficult and how, in some regards, you miss the magic of being a child.
It's very general in that sense; it's not like it's a particular song to go along with a particular memory, it's more of a song from that period that I still listen to that always makes me nostalgic.

Oooo I dig this. Shimmery and immersive. Yes this reminds me of drugs ok.

4th Place: Metric - Gimme Sympathy

I...don't think I've ever heard this whole album and I need to fix that. Metric's sound in general hits specific nostalgia for me, when I was a young teen in the years right around when stuff like theirs came out and I was just starting to explore modern alternative music and it was like a whole world was opening to me. I...$%#! I didn't expect to have so many feelings about this. It's just a total bop, and the lyrics have all sorts of potential for sentimental depth. Why did I never really get into Metric lol whoops

3rd Place: Syd Matters - Obstacles

Ooooh this is gorgeous. I watched a friend play through Life is Strange a few years back but don't remember the song at all tbh. But remembering some of the emotions and vibes of the game this definitely fits.

    Keldeo
Keldeo's writeup: Not a childhood game by any means, but since video game soundtracks got me into music, it was still important to me to choose a song used in a video game. This appears in Life Is Strange. To me, the lyrics very much recall fond nostalgia, a sense of carefree innocence worn away over time but present in memory.

2nd Place: Radical Face - Baptisms

Hello again Sloonei old pal. I love Radical Face and yet don't think I'm familiar with this album - oh it's an EP, well I'll have to remedy that. Everything on the Family Tree albums has such a strong emotional pull and this is no exception. The strings alone can bring tears to my eyes let alone the lyrics.

1st Place: Sparklehorse - Gold Days

Ooh this is really lovely. Somehow I'm not familiar with the artist (maybe have heard the name) but I clearly need to fix that. Very much in my wheelhouse and definitely hits a 2000s-indie-pop emotional nerve -- flavored like Phil Elverum, Ben Gibbard, James Mercer, Conor Oberst, etc. I love the vocals quite a bit and the overall production is perfect. I.... think this is a lip-smacking ten. (That vanilla. That cream.)

Metric's Fantasies is my favorite album so I definitely think you should check it out if you liked this one. I'm pretty sure I submit this song to every other walrus I enter but it's just my favorite song that always makes me happier than I was before I started listening to it.

Metric's Synthetica is a good album but rather different to this one. It has some bops though I don't think more than two songs from it crack my top 12 of theirs (Lost Kitten + Synthetica)

edit: i forgot about Breathing Underwater somehow. It's in here too
