Threadmarks: Use these to quickly navigate to important posts made by the game host or moderators.

Hosted By: The automated ModBot w/ the assistance of Askthepizzaguy* and Stork..
    Start Date: Monday, August 15th.
SOD/EOD: Day will begin @ 8:00 AM EDT and will end @ 8:00 PM EDT after 36 hours have passed. If there is early majority (see below), this schedule may shift. Generally, the mods will manually correct the deadlines in these cases to make sure a day doesn't end at a weird or suboptimal time.
Rules: See the next post for a full description.
Phase Lengths: 36/12 (2 days per entire cycle). Day 1 will start at 8:00 AM EDT Monday, Aug 15th and end at 8:00 PM EST Tuesday, Aug 16th. For weekends, Friday, Saturday and Sunday are combined to one game day.
Mechanics: Deadline lynch w/ option for majority starting on Day 2 (i.e. person with most votes is lynched at end of the day phase, unless a majority has been achieved before then, ending the day early), in the case of a tie the lynch will be randomized, no lynch is a valid vote.
Night Chat In Thread: Not allowed, the thread is closed during night phases.
Out of Thread Communication: Not allowed under any circumstances, unless you're provided with a private thread allowing for outside communication. This will be detailed in your Role PM.

    Matrix12
The setup used is called Matrix12. It was designed specifically for this season.

    A B C D E F
1 Town Jailkeeper Vanilla Townie Mafia Role Cop Vanilla Townie 1-Shot Mafia Strongman Town Odd Night Cop
2 Mafia Roleblocker Town Alignment Cop Town Doctor Mafia Ninja Vanilla Townie Vanilla Townie
3 1-Shot Bulletproof Townie 1-Shot Mafia Strongman Town Tracker Town Masons (2) Vanilla Townie 1-Shot Mafia Strongman
4 1-Shot Mafia Strongman 1-Shot Mafia Bulletproof Town Vigilante Town Bodyguard 2-Shot Town Jailkeeper Vanilla Townie
5 Vanilla Townie Vanilla Townie Mafia Jailkeeper 1-Shot Mafia Strongman Town Alignment Cop w/ n0 town check Town Jailkeeper
6 Town Vigilante Town Innocent Child Vanilla Townie Town Tracker 2-Shot Mafia Roleblocker Mafia Watcher

The host randomizes a letter or a number, deciding which setup is used. I.e. if the host rands C, then the setup will consist of the roles in the C column. The host then adds 2 Mafia Goons to the setup and fills up the rest with Vanilla Townies.

I.e. setup C would give you this:
    1x Town Doctor
    1x Town Tracker
    1x Town Vigilante
    10x Vanilla Townie

    1x Mafia Role Cop
    1x Mafia Jailkeeper
    2x Mafia Goon

    General notes on the setup:

    • The mafia's factional kill must be assigned to a single member of their team each night. This means that the mafia's factional kill can, for example, be blocked by a Town Jailkeeper or tracked by a Town Tracker.
    • For those wondering, some of the roles in the matrix (e.g. Mafia Ninja and 1-Shot Mafia Bulletproof) will indeed only have value for either the row or the column setup in which it is used and not the other. This is not a mistake, it is done on purpose to only boost the mafia side in one of the two setups.

    Notable restrictions/clarifications:

    • The Mafia Ninja's ability to avoid detection by Trackers/Watchers is non-consecutive. If a Ninja carried out the factional kill on Night 1 and enabled their Ninja ability, they cannot carry out the kill again on Night 2 and enable their Ninja ability for the second night in a row.
    • The Bulletproof roles are passively protected from the first shot fired at them during night. They will not be informed if they lose their vest.
    • None of the included roles can self-target, except for the Mafia Watcher.
    • Doctors, Jailkeepers, and Roleblockers are not allowed to target the same players on consecutive nights.
    • The Innocent Child may choose himself when he wishes to be publicly confirmed in the thread as town. He can only do it during day phases though.
    • The Odd Night Cop may only investigate on odd nights (i.e. Night 1, Night 3, etc.). He won't receive a n0 investigation check.

    Feedback PM's:
These are the results you will get when you submit certain actions.

    • "Your action on Player A was received." For non-investigative roles when they submit an action, they also receive this if they are roleblocked.
    • "Your action on Player B did not return any results." For investigative roles (tracker, cop, etc.) when roleblocked.
    • "Player C did not visit anyone." or "Player D was visited by no one." For investigative roles when tracking/watching someone where nothing happens (or if a ninja was tracked).

    Example Role PM's:
Below you will find the role PM's for all the roles used in Matrix12. Some of these will also contain additional information that wasn't outlined above.

    BPV (Bulletproof Vest)

The BPV modifier gives you one or more Bulletproof Vests that passively protect you from one shot each. Each time you are shot, your number of BPVs will decrease by one. If you lose all of your BPVs then you can be killed like everyone else. You will not be notified if a BPV is broken.

You have 1 BPVs at the start of the game.

As Mafia, you have access to the Factional Night Kill Night Action. Players targeted with this action will die at the end of the Night unless protected. Submit your Night Action each night using the form below the game thread. You may change your target as many times as you want. The last action submitted will be used.

If no Mafia submit an action, a player will be picked at random from the living non-Mafia players.

    What is the mafia championship?
The Mafia Championship is an annual online tournament series that pits representatives from various mafia communities against each other as they compete to determine the internet's greatest forum mafia player. The representatives are officially and democratically chosen to be "Champions" by their respective communities. Read more about the history of this series here.

What's the format for season 3?
    • 136 different communities are participating.
    • 8 Qualifying Games will be played with 17 players each.
    • 2 players advance to the Finale Game from each game based on post-game votes.
    • 1 Wildcard Game will be played (Wildcards are decided by a jury consisting of former finalists), determining the 17th and final spot in the Finale. Runner-ups in this game will be first in line to replace any finalists who may have to drop out.
    • If a replacement is required during a Qualifying game, I will first ask any alternate offered by the home community of the player needing to be replaced. If there is no viable alternate, an alternate will instead be found from one of the larger communities.

    Which communities are participating?

How do I spectate these games?

If you wish to actively spectate and show support for your representative, then there are two ways of doing this.

    1) There will be a private spectator thread on the site for each game that you may request access to. Simply register on the site and PM the user "Thingyman", and you will be added. Feel free to spectate games that your representative isn't in as well. These threads are published after the game completes.

    2) We have a spectator chat on Skype, with currently more than 180 people in it. It's very active and fun, I highly suggest you join it if you have Skype. Just add "thingyman".

None of these two chats/threads will be spoiled!

On Mafia Universe, we have many custom features that makes the experience of playing mafia smoother. We have even updated the ModBot in anticipation for this season, making it possible to run these games via the use of a completely automated ModBot.

Read more about how to use the MU features here:
    VOTING BBCODES
Our forum votes for someone by using the vote tags: [V]Thingyman[/V]. Preview:

    ##Vote Thingyman

Make sure that you spell out the full, correct name. Abbreviations or misspelled names will not be registered by the Modbot.

To unvote, use the tags: [UNV][/UNV] . When unvoting you do not need to enter the name of the person that you are unvoting. Preview:

    ##Unvote

    VOTING BUTTONS
You can quickly vote for someone by clicking on the box with a checkmark icon, which will bring up an alphabetized dropdown containing the names of living players:

This will insert [V][/V] tags with the name of the player you selected in the dropdown, perfect every time.

Click the empty checkbox button to insert [UNV][/UNV].

    SUBMITTING NIGHT ACTIONS
If you are mafia or a cop, you need to submit an action each night.

Simply do this by scrolling to the bottom of the game thread. Here you will find a night action form like this:

Click the dropdown and select the player whom you wish to use your night action on. You can change it as many times as you wish before the deadline expires.

    CALLING UP A VOTECOUNT
Votecounts will appear automatically at various intervals, but you can also call up votecounts yourself by following these steps:

First, you need to apply to join "Mafia Game Hosts" under Permission Groups.

Second, once your request has been approved, you will be able to call up votecounts by simply pushing the "Post Votecount" button in the top right corner of any game thread that you'd like an updated votecount for.

    ISOLATING A PLAYER’S POSTS
If you wish to read a player’s posts in isolation, simply click on “ISO” in the top right corner of one of that player’s posts in the relevant thread as illustrated here:

Alternatively, you can access a player’s posts in isolation by clicking on the number next to “Replies:” in the forum lobby.

Doing so will pull up a window listing the post counts for everyone who has posted in that thread. You access someone’s posts in isolation by simply clicking on the number next to “Posts:” for that person.

The ISO view itself has Quote and Multi-Quote buttons inside it, which will make it very easy to quickly quote a lot of a player's posts for analysis or commentary:

    MULTI-ISOLATING
If you wish to read not just one player's posts, but you want to ISO multiple players, then click the "Multi ISO" button to the left of "Game Tools" and select the players in question as shown here:

    MULTI-QUOTING WHILE THREAD IS LOCKED

Note that you can multi-quote posts from even locked game threads. This is useful for when you wish to reread the game and do work during night phases.

After quoting the relevant posts, you simply open a different, opened thread and press "Go Advanced". Then add the quotes to your post by clicking the prompt below the post area as shown here:

Now, of course you can't post your work in the game thread while the thread is locked, but you can copy paste and save your work to a local file or the cloud and have it ready to post the very next day phase (if you're still alive, that is).

    BOOKMARKS
Whenever you open a game thread, you are able to bookmark posts. This is for many players an important tool for keeping track of and remembering vital pieces of information, reads, claims etc.

Also, note that these bookmarks are saved to your user account, meaning that it eliminates the trouble associated with keeping notes between different computers/devices.

If you want to bookmark a post, you simply scroll to the post that you want to bookmark and press "Set Bookmark" as shown here:

This will call up 5 different colored icons (Blue, Red, Yellow, Green, and Black) on the right side of the post in question. You can click any of these icons, which will then prompt you to include a note for the post.

If you don't want to include a note, you don't have to - just leave it blank. The color coding in itself can be a valuable tool. Maybe you want to use Red bookmarks for posts that you find suspicious, Green bookmarks for posts that you find townie, Black bookmarks for posts containing claims, or whatever system you can think of that will be helpful to you.

Once this is done, you have now successfully bookmarked a post with a certain color and maybe even a note. If you wish to remove the bookmark again, click on "Unset Bookmark".

    How do I access bookmarks?

There are two ways to access your bookmarks.

    1) Inside a game thread, you can access the bookmarks for that specific game by simply right clicking on the "Bookmark" button and opening the link.

This will bring you to a separate page that is automatically filtered to only show bookmarks from the game thread that you accessed the page from.

    2) You can also access your bookmarks by going to Features in the site's top menu:

This will bring you to a page where no bookmarks are shown by default. However, you have several filtering options.

You can filter by Game, by Player and by Color - and all of them at once if you so wish.

Here's an example of filtering by only red bookmarks in one specific game:

If you want to be taken directly to one of your bookmarked posts, you just click the post number.

    How do I quote bookmarks?

You can also multi-quote bookmarked posts by clicking the little "+" button seen above on the far right side of each bookmark.

Once you have multi-quoted all the bookmarked posts that you want to quote, you will then have to go to the game thread in which you wish to quote the bookmarked posts.

Here you have two ways of quoting the posts.

    1) Click on "Reply With Quote" on another post as shown here:

You will then probably want to delete the last post quoted in the reply box, but otherwise you should be good to go.

    2) Or you can do the more smooth option and click the "Reply To Thread" button at the top and bottom of the game thread - as shown here:

By doing this you will open up a reply box containing only your multi-quoted bookmarked posts.

    VERY IMPORTANT!

Read these, live these, don't break these:
    • Only post/talk about the game in this thread. Don't PM other players, unless your role PM allows this. Also, don't post anything about the game in other threads or on other forums.
    • Don't try to use the form of your role PM. So a screenshot of your role PM would be cheating.
    • When the thread is open and the Mafia Host has announced the start of the day phase you can post in it. But only as long as you are a live player. No deadposting, please.
    • Breadcrumbing is allowed. Secret codes requiring keys or anything resembling that is NOT allowed.
    • This is a game of lying. Players are expected to lie. No statement or promise a player makes within the game has any force outside the game. As an example, a bet offered in a game is not something you can collect if you win.
    • If we believe you to bending the rules intentionally in a way that clearly goes against the spirit of the rules and the game, then that would also be grounds for modkill. Do not try to get fancy or angly with the rules, please. An example would include trying to blame the ModBot for a supposed error in order to make a claim of yours more believable.
    • If you have any questions about rules, send a PM to this account. I'd be happy to help. You should not be asking the Game Host questions in the thread and neither should you ever refer to private communications with the mod.
    • If you should ever require a sub, PM the mod and stop posting in the thread.
    • No hydra'ing / multi-accounting is allowed. Do not share your account with anyone else.
    • Treat your fellow players with respect. Hostility will not be tolerated.

I will repeat this particular rule once more in big letters to make sure you understand:

DO NOT EVER REFERENCE THIS GAME OUTSIDE OF THIS GAME THREAD. I.E. YOU SHOULD NOT BE TALKING ABOUT THIS GAME WHATSOEVER ON YOUR HOME SITE. IF PEOPLE ASK YOU QUESTIONS, TELL THEM YOU CAN'T TALK ABOUT THE GAME AND LINK THEM TO THIS THREAD.

We expect participation, and if you do not seem to be participating, for example, if you post less than 10 times per day phase, it is possible that we will consider subbing you out of the game. If you don't post at all, a sub will be found ASAP, at our discretion.

Please do not put me in a tough situation. It has happened several times in the past seasons that people have made comments about the game that could potentially indicate their alignment. Even saying "the game is a lot of fun" or "man, I hate this" is way, way, way, way inappropriate!

PLEASE DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING RELATING TO SUBS. Whether that be why someone subbed out or who might sub in, don't discuss it at all. If you are choosing to sub out, do not post about it in the thread. The only discussion of substitution should happen between the relevant player and the hosts, never in the thread,

Refer to this post for the complete, standard ruleset for mafia games.

    THE CHAMPIONS AMONG CHAMPIONS

    Agent Of Zion

    REPRESENTING: Fever Clan

NATIONALITY: I am from the USA currently living in Japan (and currently floating around on the high seas)

STARTED PLAYING MAFIA (YEAR): Started playing mafia in 2009

HAVE PLAYED MAFIA ON THE FOLLOWING SITES: I've played on MafiaScum, EpicMafia, Town of Salem, and the physical Ultimate Werewolf. And Secret Hitler if that counts.

    Bio:

I shamelessly stole roles, setups, tips and tricks from everywhere I could to get a mafia playerbase going on FeverClan.com. Somehow I have all of them convinced I am a much better player than I really am.

As far as anything else is concerned, I'm a much better town than I am scum, but one Mafia win I am most proud of was telling the entire town that I was mafia at the start of day one and somehow managing to convince them to follow my lead.

I'm looking forward to living past N1/D1 for a change.

    Apoc

    REPRESENTING: Playstuff

    NATIONALITY: Irish

STARTED PLAYING MAFIA (YEAR): First game in 2012. Started playing for reals in 2015 though.

HAVE PLAYED MAFIA ON THE FOLLOWING SITES: Playstuff, Mafia Universe, 2+2 POG

    BIO:

I suck for not submitting a bio.

    BFG

    REPRESENTING: Dragonmount

    NATIONALITY: British

    STARTED PLAYING MAFIA: 2012

HAVE PLAYED MAFIA ON THE FOLLOWING SITES: Dragonmount, Vendetta Strada

    BIO:

"Since beginning her mafia career in 2012, she has established herself as one of the top players on DragonMount, earning respect from her peers for not only her skill but her friendly personality in games, as well. While not necessarily a 'volume' player - though she can be, if the situation calls for it - people know to listen to what she says. If she's saying something, it probably matters.

When the site began taking nominations for players in Season 2, BFG was strongly supported by a large portion of the forum, including a former top 3 finisher and the tournament's most nominated candidate (who happens to be MU's most handsome moderator, to boot). After another strong year in 2015, she was one of the runaway choices to participate this year."

"BFG is, sometimes quietly, a solid + contributor for whatever team she is on and always a pleasure to play with. She doesn't have a 100mph fastball but she's going to go seven innings every game and that sort of dependability and poise is a rare asset."

    Damdred

    REPRESENTING: Team Liquid

    NATIONALITY: American

    STARTED PLAYING MAFIA (YEAR): 2013

HAVE PLAYED MAFIA ON THE FOLLOWING SITES: Teamliquid for the majority of the time. Starkingdoms also for a short term before the community died.

    BIO:

An undercover operation is set. Kentucky was one of the least likely places for a meth lab. Too far out of the way. Gangs preferred keeping things closer to the border where they know the territory. Cops had been on high alert after a recent bomb threat, cleverly planted by the gang itself. The stash they had been building up was about to be transported south.

A lone truck comes by, chugging in the distance. An oldie, maybe a 70's model destined for the scrapheap. Give it five, maybe ten years at best. The gang's scout, Eden, grabs his binoculars and takes a closer look. A bearded figure is spotted driving the death trap, eyes fixated on the road in front of him. The truck passes and the scout gives the all clear.

Days later, members of the gang agreed to celebrate their successful delivery in a local bar. The scout looks around but doesn't see his friends just yet. The bar is completely empty beyond the bartender, himself, and that bearded figure he spotted earlier.

    "Who are you?"

Damdred kinda just looks at him. Eden asks again.

"I saw you on the road and I don't see strangers very often. Who are you?"

The bearded man reaches into his pocket and slowly places his card on the table. Eden grabs it and notices 20 names crossed out before scrolling down and noticing his own. Right at that moment, Damdred beardbutts the young scout unconscious. He throws the body into his truck and chugs on.

    -

Damdred is a veteran of Teamliquid, participating in many games throughout its history. He's known for being a slow starter, who can solve a game out of nowhere when he seemingly had little influence or direction beforehand. Like a diesel, Damdred needs a bit of time to get going, but leave him be for too long and you won't live to regret it.

    Dr.SaaB

    REPRESENTING: MafiaManiac

    NATIONALITY: Romanian

STARTED PLAYING MAFIA (YEAR): Jan 2014

HAVE PLAYED MAFIA ON THE FOLLOWING SITES: unitedreds.net, mafiamaniac.net

    BIO:

I'm Dr.Saab and this is my bio.
Since I'm not very good at talking about myself, I'm gonna let my fellow MafiaManiacs handle my introduction.

In my early beginnings I was know for my activity ... could fill up a thread like a pro. These days tough I tend to think more & write less.
yuiop: And of course there's 3 pages already, Saab is in this BTSC.

Why I try to think more ? Gotta keep those demons & old habits at bay. What can I say, paranoia's a b****.
Inawordyes: I think sometime you have a tendency to get a little too inside your head. You're very logic-oriented, but you sometimes start to go a little overboard with the logic and cross into the illogical without realizing it, and then pay the price for it later on as people call you out and you don't know what they're talking about.
But that's why we have tinfoil!

I respect goodie (aka town) life and I don't back away from controversial subjects. Controversy creates reads, only problem is ... getting the rest of the town to trust your judgement.
Nana7: Too nice, willing to have d1 no lynch. I remember wondering if you might have been indy wanting to keep everyone alive long enough to win. I did not even consider why baddies killed you when I should have since in hindsight it looks like they didn't like you pushing Dee.

Well what can I say I'm only human :
Auramyna: Hey Barc, I'll let you in on a little secret. Feeding Saab's ego is what kills him ... or the other way around. Don't try and understand it, just take my word for it. @Saab - You shouldn't have told me your secret.

And now let's have a look at my dark side.
Boquise: If Saab starts twisting everything you say, he's most likely good. It is okay to lynch him in that scenario."
Me and Boq are gonna have a long talk after the championship.

In conclusion what can I say ... I'm not the best mafia player but I do try to give it my all. I see this championship as a chance to meet new players from different communities and with different styles. I think this will be a great learning experience for me.

    May the lynching begin !!

    Sincerely,
Dr.SaaB - Your Local Pill Distributor

    faZ

    REPRESENTING: NADoTA

    NATIONALITY: Russian

    STARTED PLAYING MAFIA (YEAR): 2013

HAVE PLAYED MAFIA ON THE FOLLOWING SITES: Nadota, epic mafia

    BIO:

I love the game of mafia because it teaches you to understand the true motives of why people do what they do.

I am pretty aggressive player and I like to put pressure on people to get reads. Don't take offense to things I saw in the game, it is just my character I swear!

Here are few things that my fellow forum players have to say about me:

"Can read mafia players with slightly better accuracy than he can Tinder bots." - Capgrass

"Not a total $#@! but nearly" - Cactus

"Decent player with the ego of a great player" - Friend

"if a slumming mexican was making guacamole and a piece of avocado dropped under the bar counter and was left there to naturally decompose for 4 months you'd get faz." - Jing (he has small $#@!, so he is mad at the world).

"Well objectively I think generally, since your early games you come across as cocky and arrogant instead of confident which leads you into making bad assumptions. However I think you have a strong presence and you add good value to the game. I enjoy people who stick to their guns and won't get bullied.

My favorite play you made was in one of the earlier games. You were the last mafia and there were 3 town alive. You purposely no killed to cause confusion. I was cracking up. You lost but it was mega enjoyable to read." -Roragok (our best game host)

    GeneralHankerchief

    REPRESENTING: The Org

    NATIONALITY: USA USA USA

    STARTED PLAYING MAFIA (YEAR): 2006

HAVE PLAYED MAFIA ON THE FOLLOWING SITES: totalwar.org

    BIO:

GeneralHankerchief, is he even still around? Apparently so. As the founding member of mafia at the .Org, he is known affectionately around those parts as being "over the hill", "decrepit", "desiccated", and "dirt's grandpappy". And yet he is so devoted to that backwater site that no one ever visits that he's never even ventured out to play mafia on another site. He's the grizzled old timer who sits in a rocking chair on the porch every day telling 70 year olds to git off his lawn. He's been through at least seven depressions and four world wars, and affectionately refers to Kaiser Wilhelm I as "that spry young Prussian boy". Please be advised that he may show up dressed like a pirate, wearing an onion on his belt, and that for him, this is perfectly normal. During this event, he may mutter things like "where am I?" or "who in the hell are you people?", and this will demonstrate that, even in his twilight years, he's still the sharpest bulb in our particular knife shed. He may talk about the "good old days", before there were any "roles" like cops added to these games, having to hunt using only wits alone, and how people used to play without alignment reveals, and if they were mafia, they had to write their own murder narrations or else it didn't count. And believe it or not, that's completely true, we had a team of archaeologists look into it. Please handle with care, as he is extremely fragile and we would like his raggedy old bones returned to us in some semblance of being intact, and he definitely has the osteoporosis.

I think they nominated me just to get the source of that smell out of the forum for a while.

    REPRESENTING: The Syndicate

    NATIONALITY: New Zealand

    STARTED PLAYING MAFIA (YEAR): 2010

HAVE PLAYED MAFIA ON THE FOLLOWING SITES: I'm representing the Syndicate, which is my home mafia site. I've also played at Spoiler TV and Revolution Mafia, both now defunct but they were two feeder sites for the Syndicate, and I also play a bit at RateYourMusic, a site that we have developed a close mafia relationship with thanks to last years championships.

    BIO:

By day, I ply my trade as a commercial lawyer. By night, I'm hoping I'm at home so I can break out my favourite TV shows or a great boardgame. On weekends, you might find me writing and preaching a sermon at my local church. And at all times, my mind is mostly on the imminent arrival of my first child.

Somewhere amongst all of that, I have to find time to get my mafia fix. Some call me a hurricane of self-assurance. Others call me a coward. Others still might consider me a paid up member of the suicidal moron club. Whatever I am, one thing is certain. If you are playing mafia with me, you'll know it.

STARTED PLAYING MAFIA (YEAR): i started playing mafia july 7th, 2010 (my board keep an archive of past games so i can look this **** up)

HAVE PLAYED MAFIA ON THE FOLLOWING SITES: well, AIM used to run a promotional game waaaaaay back in the day for the movie cry wolf, and that game was extremely similar to chatroom mafia, and i played that before playing forum mafia. its actually pretty cool (http://jayisgames.com/review/cry-wolf.php this is a synopsis of the game). ive played mafia here on smashboards, serenesforest, squidboards (where you may know me as african american), epicmafia (which sucks) and one or two other sites that i cant remember

    BIO:

i have a tendency to be what some members of my site refer to as an "*******." in reality, what i really am is somebody who prefers not to tolerate stupidity, and enjoys exploiting the inconsistencies and idiocy of others. not only is it enjoyable to me, but i wouldnt do it if i didnt think itd be worth examining other peoples reactions to what i have to say. since this is a group of people who are supposed to be representing their respective website, and therefore, at worst, experienced with the game, i wont have to be coddling and aiding possible newbs into feeling comfortable with the game, so i can play to my real self.

    REPRESENTING: Ultimate Mafia

    NATIONALITY: United States

    STARTED PLAYING MAFIA (YEAR): 2014

HAVE PLAYED MAFIA ON THE FOLLOWING SITES: home, POG, MU pretty extensively. A bit on mindromp, millenium, personality cafe, the org, jesus toast. A few games on em/ms all a year+ ago. Probably missing someplace.

    BIO:

I started playing mafia about two years ago on the Sims forums (ultimate mafia is an offshoot of there). I repped in champs season 2 a year ago and have been playing on pog/mu a lot since. I have played probably 100+ games on my homesite and 60-some off it, which is sort of ridiculous to think about for the amount of time I have been playing. I've also played something like 200 turbos.

I like mafia/ww way too much and am probably more than a little addicted.

I like to post. I post a lot. I am pretty sure I don't just clog up the thread with uselessness. I definitely post stream of consciousness style/think out loud type stuff. I work primarily off tone and interaction. (not interaction as in "is this person partnered with x", interacting with people.)

This bio is probably longer than 99% of my posts will be.

I had no idea what to say about myself, so I asked my community to write something for me, and one of them made me this image:

I'm a moderate at heart. I tend to fall into the middle of jokey vs. serious, active vs. passive, hardcore wallposter vs. lurker. I also tend to get annoyed by people at both extremes, but I respect anyone who's making a sincere effort, regardless of how it manifests.

I $#@!post a lot and love memes. I sometimes get annoyed at people who $#@!post a lot and post memes.

I'd rather lose a fun game than win a boring game. After I've lost a few games in a row, this is less true.

    REPRESENTING: Rate Your Music

    Nationality: American

    Started playing Mafia: 2011

Have played on the following sites: RateYourMusic, The Syndicate

    Bio:

I've been playing mafia for about 5 years, primarily on RateYourMusic.com (RYM), which is now PWYW as a result of the RYM Off-Topic board being shut down. Additionally I've played a lot at The Syndicate for much of the last year.

I try to take a balanced approach to the game, and to interact with and involve every single player to some degree. I try to take a relaxed and patient approach and always assume a player is innocent before I assume they are guilty. While I've not experienced a whole lot of different Mafia communities to date, I think RYM developed into a very pro-town culture over the years. By that I mean our typical play-style over there encourages strong town play, coordination and cooperation, over individual performances or anti-town play. Or maybe that's just how I perceive it because that's how I approach the game. I do not know. My biggest Mafia influence is JaggedJimmyJay who represented our community last year and kicked quantities of ass, I recall. But RYM is full of dudes and ladies who I took a lot of mafspiration from and who have kept the games fun for nearly half a decade now.

I do not know how I will respond to the climate of this particular game with so many unfamiliar faces, but you should expect me to ask a lot of questions. A lot of questions. So many questions you'll think I'm a malfunctioning robot.

As for Sloonei the person, I am a recent college graduate in America who likes spending all his free time running around the woods and things of that nature. I like baseball too much and need a new job. This bio is being written at 3 in the morning on a sleepless night. Please forgive me for what you have just read and are about to observe.

    Bio:

When I asked someone else to write the bio for me in my community I was greeted with overwhelming support to just send back "talks too much." In an effort to prove that sentence true, let's talk too much. I have a middling mafia record and have sadly only been scum once at the typing of this. I pretend to be a pro scum hunter which sometimes proves true and other times proves that I like to shout from the rooftops at whoever might be listening while pointing at someone walking through the crowd a little funny and saying he did it. Oddly, this method tends to work more often than not because one of the few things I pride myself in a mafia game is that I know how to work a room, sometimes getting the crowd to vote on something with less evidence than a cold case from the early 1800s. I've also run my own game recently which I found to be quite balanced but people took issue with a role aptly and concisely named "one shot bulletproof ascetic serial killer and alignment cop." Hmm, I thought I'd write more but I don't think I have much else to say, my favorite role to play so far has been a neutral with the win condition of either surviving or having marked all living players in the game. The marking in this case was licking them during the night and giving them a cowlick. Good times.

Im known as wvw-jelte, this stands for weerwolven van wakkerdam-jelte. Weerwolven van wakkerdam is the dutch name of werewolves. Werwolves is the most know version in dutch (altough some people know about mafia as well).
Personally I like roles that create chaos the most. Roles that can change things in the game in such a way that people are wondering what happened. I like those roles the most when they are neutral because then you dont have to worry about accidentily harming your team. Altough I like playing with roles like the doctor as well. Im not a big fan of playing with investigation roles.
Im very strong in choosing a playstyle for a game and stick to that playstyle no matter what. This certainly helps a lot if you turn evil at some point in the game. But most of the time when I start out as mafia i don't reach the end of the game.
Now if you dont mind im returning to my fellow mafia to shoot down the sherrif.

    REPRESENTING: GOG

NATIONALITY: I'm a US American beauty pageant contestant.

STARTED PLAYING MAFIA: Started playing Mafia 2014

HAVE PLAYED MAFIA ON THE FOLLOWING SITES: Have only played on GOG.

    BIO:

I’m a 40-year-old business owner in Southern California. I have two boys aged 7 and 8, so my life is basically work and kids sports/activities. I’ll be playing Mafia when I should be working, but evenings are taken up with family, and weekends can be spotty as well as Saturdays especially are taken up with hockey and baseball. (Hockey season actually ends this weekend, however, so that will free up some time!) Other than that, I am a life-long metalhead and PC gamer, which is why I came to you from the GOG forums.

Mafia bio: I started playing a couple of years ago after finding the current game thread on the GOG forum (where I was probably looking for help on a game) and thought “What the heck is this?” I had never heard of it… but I decided it looked interesting so I followed along as a silent observer.

That game was a “werewolf” setup: 11 players – 8 vanilla villagers, 1 seer, 2 wolves. Things were going quite badly for town, but at the end of the game, the seer finally revealed himself and exposed a wolf. Town agreed and lynched the protesting player… to find he was a hapless villager. The “seer”… was a wolf. Game ended in Mafia victory.

    I was hooked.

I observed one more game from start to finish and then jumped in. Since then, I’ve greatly enjoyed the game, both as Town and Scum. I would say I have a highly active, somewhat confrontational (but always heavy on the silliness and humor) playstyle. I am well-known on my forum for flipping tables and trying to smash stagnation. I hate boring, do-nothing, say-nothing playstyles, and have won friends and influenced people*1 by developing my “Slaughter the Useless” philosophy on Day-one mafia playing. *2 I also tend to howl for lynching/killing/blood/offal sprayed across the wall, even as Town, because… well, just because.

As a moderator, I highly enjoy flavor. A yogsloth game is going to overwhelm players with flavor (my last game had over 30 pages in Word of just nighttime PM writing), as I find Mafia most enjoyable when it’s a story – a complete world in which the players interact not only with each other, but also with the environment, and help to write a complete tale. I feel it keeps players more involved and active, as they want to find out what will happen next. Even if you’re Town Vanilla, in my game, you’re getting tons of flavor at night. Each player gets one little piece of the story puzzle, and when it’s all over and everything is published, they all get to see the big picture. Tons ‘o’ fun.

Here are some links to some game highlights of mine:

    GOG game #28
Sole survivor victory. The rest of my Scum team was slaughtered in the early game, leaving me all on my lonesome. Managed to be the only player left alive, despite skipping my night kill twice. Famous game on my forum for the outrageous and extremely entertaining “Town Arsonist” role-claim (not by me).

    GOG game #29
Game I moderated. A great example of how I build a story and how silly it is. I loved this one because I had a character named “Totesevil McNastiness”. He was Town Vanilla.

    GOG game #30
Check out the first post of the game. Yep, we won a landslide victory.

    GOG game #37
Another of my games. This one would be hard for an outsider to follow as it’s absolutely stuffed to the brim with inside jokes for the players involved, but tons of fun story once more. My character as the moderator is actually carried forward from a previous game where as group, without deciding beforehand, we all seemed to decide to role-play our characters. Great fun.

So that’s it! Hope I add something to the proceedings, don’t get killed in the first five minutes, and provide some entertainment for everybody. Thanks again for the invite!

    _____

*1 And by that, I mean, pissed off everybody and their pet gerbil

*2 “Slaughter the Useless” in a nutshell: Day one, the likeliest outcome is the lynch of a Townie. With little information to go on, it’s nearly a crapshoot, and the math simply makes it most likely some hapless Townie fool is going to go down for some relatively minor crime (a poor turn of phrase, a bad joke, I’ve even seen someone lynched because he had the word “wolf” in his nickname). The best play, therefore, is to lynch the least helpful player. Lynch the player who posts the least and generally doesn’t attempt to help or play.

The reasoning is simple and twofold: 1) If that player is Scum, he’s attempting to lurk his way to victory. He’s hoping you just don’t notice him and go lynch the guy with the loud tie and the stupid fart jokes. He’ll probably continue that way all game, until you get to Day 4 and realize you don’t have any info about him and now you’re screwed. Scum lurking is a stupid but effective tactic, and lynching the lurkers is a good way to discourage that play. (Similar to “lynch all liars” to prevent Townies from making foolish gambits.) 2) If the player is Town, not only is he useless to the Scum-hunting cause, but if he survives until mid-late game, he becomes a policy lynch, for the same reasons as if he’s Scum. He appears to be intentionally lurking, so you end up almost being forced to view his play that way, and lynch him… and a mid-game mis-lynch is devastating for Town.

So therefore, the best Day 1 play is to SLAUGHTER… THE…. USELESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!

I've prepared for you this game.... OR ELSE!

    Peach's Castle
    Mushroom Kingdom

It is the dawn of a new day in the fantastic land of the Mushroom Kingdom. The angry-faced sun peeks over the tippy tops of the mountains in the distance. The mist from the many waterfalls and rivers and lakes fills the spring air, and dew glistens on the many trees and bushes, some of which are known to have smiley faces. Even the plants are generally pretty friendly in this wonderful and magical land.

    ...With a few notable exceptions.

Nevertheless, the mostly peaceful Kingdom is teeming with life and joy. Flowers dance happily in the sunlight, with joyful smiling faces. The Yoshis roam freely, eating the plentiful apples that are found throughout the forests, and laying eggs even though, presumably, some of them are dudes. Don't ask me how that works. And the peaceful subjects of the Mushroom Kingdom, the mushroom-capped Toads, live in their little mushroom-shaped houses, and are up bright and early, in their fields farming mushrooms. I'm sensing a theme here.

And these people have a very interesting economy. You see, there are magical floating boxes spread throughout the lands, and rather than use a primitive banking system, or pursue wealth throughout their lives, the surplus goods in their economy are represented by golden coins, and they store these golden coins in the magical floating boxes, here, there, and pretty much everywhere. And these boxes filled with the fruits of their hard labor are totally unguarded.

These people are a bunch of idiots. Frankly, they sicken me.

And cut off that stupid sappy music. I'm not listening to that crap anymore.

    *record scratch*

    That's much better.

Those simpleton mushroom fools are in for a nasty surprise. I have been preparing another offensive for most of the year, and as usual, I'm predicting my massive army will march right in and take over the entire kingdom with ease. It happens every time. Then I'll steal all their shiny golden coins, and their precious pretty pink princess, Peach. And I guess I'll even steal all their mushrooms, just because I can.

I'm between conquests at the moment, however. You see, the last time I conquered those mushroom bums, some stupid Moustache Guy showed up and punched me in the face and threw me into my own lava pit, and single-handedly defeated my entire standing army. I won't lie, it stung a bit. Come to think of it, this tends to be the result of a lot of my evil schemes.

Note to self: Kill moustache guy.

Sometimes he shows up with his dunce of a brother. They pretty much look the same to me, but I think he has a green hat, or a gray hat. Green or gray, I can't remember. He's kind of a push-over. When they're really desperate, some of those mushroom things come at me, too. They're pretty tasty when you put them in a stew, I have to admit. I'm not worried about those bums. They only show up after I've already conquered everything. Right now, I'm having a much more serious problem.

"IT'S 8 IN THE MORNING AND I'M STARVING!!! WHERE THE HECK IS MY COPY OF THE KOOPSTON KHRONICLE, AND MY CAN OF KOOPA KOLA CRUNCHY?!?"

I swear, I'm surrounded by incompetents. My subordinates aren't what they're cracked up to be. They're known as the Koopa Troop.
I called them an army, but they're more of a ragtag bunch of uncoordinated nincompoops. I still haven't managed to teach them all how to avoid marching right off a cliff to their certain doom. I'm still waiting for most of them to impress me. I do have a few capable soldiers who have proven themselves valuable over the years. Those are the ones that I only rarely beat over the head with a brick. Once or twice a week, tops. But the others... sure, they were the ones that were lucky enough to avoid wandering into bottomless pits. So you'd think they were the at least semi-competent.

Not unless they prove themselves. Just the other day, I saw a Shy Guy march directly into a lava pit. If you ever wonder where Fry Guys come from, that's how. Bunch of dolts. I don't use them in my army much, for obvious reasons. Though I do like the fact that they're constantly on fire. That amuses me.

I've got to turn this collection of uninspiring misfits into a professional and disciplined armed force, or else they're going to lose to that pipe scrubber and his pasta-loving pals, again. It's costing me a fortune in retraining costs. I swear, if even one of these clods managed to actually catch the plumber or his dumber brother, I might promote them to second in command on the spot. But as it stands, I don't know if any of these fools is worthy of being called CHAMPION OF THE KOOPA TROOP.

I'll try to keep an open mind. But first, someone needs to bring me my breakfast. And I'm pretty sure a Goomba got flattened under one of the Thwomp traps in the corner of my bedroom, and the smell is worse than an entire pile of Boom-Boom's unwashed socks. It's putting me in a particularly bad mood.

    "SOMEONE SCRAPE THAT MESS UP!!!"

If they can't carry out my orders competently toda
y, I'm pretty sure I'm going to flatten one of them myself and feed their corpse to my fire snakes. Come to think of it, that's the best idea I've had all week! Now I have something to look forward to!

Note to self: clobber underlings for personal amusement.

Hello everyone! I've really been looking forward to this for a while

    Assumptions:

1.) We are all skilled players.
2.) That if someone is abnormally silent for long periods of time it is by choice.
3.) That people will look up my last game to get info on me. (Game 3, was scum)

    Concerns:

1.) That people might put more effort into winning the championship than winning the game, by that I mean I am worried that people will take a suboptimal stance or action based on how likely it is that they will get voted the champion as a result.
2.) That people will allow their previous games and interactions with other players in this series to influence them unduely.

    General Info:

I am based in Japan, and do have a job that allows me some but not constant ability to be online. I am generally unavailable from 2300 - 0830 daily because sleep and getting to work is important to me. For refrence, it is 2105 local time right now.

To everyone else, what assumptions are you making upon the start of this game? In what ways do you think you could have played your previous games in this series better? And after playing with it at least once, do you believe that our setup grid makes for a balanced game in general?

    Also, love the flavor.

And the fact that a tied vote results in a no-lynch. Nothing worse than a coin-flip deciding the game.

I'll freely admit that I did no research outside of my own games, that's what asking them in-thread is for.

For example: Who in this game have you previously played with and what's your opinion on their playstyle?

    Only Dr. Saab.

To be honest I don't care much for his playstyle but it certainly works for him. From what I saw he is exceedingly guarded with any information he has which I think benefits scum more than town. He seems to tunnel relatively easily as well. That said, he does read people very well.

So glad I drew town this game. My nerves would not have survived another champion game as scum.

I've played with Golden. He's methodical, which I usually see as scum. But he was town. Turned on and crushed scum Phighter on day 2 or 3 of our game.

Also just modded a game where yogsloth was scum and destroyed everyone. Don't read him based on tone.

Questions at the start of a game have intrinsic value for giving us something to work with. Scum could fake them, but only in the way that they can and do fake any pro-town behavior. Even more, the questions themselves are pretty good, some of them could send scum thinking.

Oh, it's really not so bad. At least if you win the flip ^-^

And you are wrong I believe. From the setup:

in the case of a tie the lynch will be randomized, no lynch is a valid vote.

It just says that you can vote for a no-lynch. Tied lynches are still decided via coinflip.

Host's note: That setting is incorrect. Tied votes are supposed to result in coin-flip lynches. They amuse the Bowser.

I likewise have not done research. I feel like reading individual players pre-game is so time-inefficient that it'll always be a better investment to read the actual game one more time.

I've played with Damdred. We were mafia together that game. He was fairly reserved, not getting a lot of suspicion and being townread all over the place for reasons I never quite understood. Mostly short posts, occasional long ones for catch-ups and the like. No idea how he is as town.

Assumptions: previous games have shown that players have widely differing assumptions, and often they get pressure for that. That's not good because it's not alignment indicative. Clearing it up might be helpful. Admittedly this would have been more relevant in the first round of games.

Played better: decent question because it makes scum talk about their playstyle and how they want to fake stuff this game. Do they lie? Do they not lie? Etc.

balanced game: this one is meaningless

they aren't amazing but they're okay, and in my experience, active efforts to escape RVS are town-indicative.

The damdred has landed. I have to say I am slightly disappointed thatbi did not roll scum. But pretty glad at the same time.

This is basically my first town game since 4 months are something insane.

Glad for it to be so.

Honest question. If someone thinks that we are all mafia geniuses, that NLing is always bad, or that 36/12 is too long or short to get anything done I'd like to know.

In what ways do you think you could have played your previous games in this series better?
I want to see who is capable of recognizing their own mistakes, and what the nature of the mistakes were.

And after playing with it at least once, do you believe that our setup grid makes for a balanced game in general?
I'd like to see if anyone thinks they are a winner or doomed from the start. People who think to either extreme won't be paying as much attention to the small details. Also, general discussion of the setup isn't terrible to have.

less warm fuzziness about the over-justification that AOZ did now. I think a town reaction is more likely to be snarky rather than super polite and helpful.

Off of 7 posts where the most substantial thing he says is he likes my questions?

    Literally nothing.

In a broad sense, everyone loudly proclaiming "yay I'm town" "wolves are going down" or anything else so obvious is getting a bit of stink-eye from me.

Just as in writing: Show, don't tell.

    I'll play along

    1) I assume that we won't have lurkers in this game because of how the past games played out. I also assume that we will probably punish the lurkers in some way and hold people accountable.

    2) My problem in my last game was being to reserved and playing it slightly to safe in a new environment. Besides that I did pretty well.

3)I think the setup is decemtly balanced I think it's slightly short but nothing to bad to work with. Just need to pay attention and put plenty of content into the thread.

Why? An extreme case of too-good-to-be-true? Maybe I just think that clear communication helps town, while pointless in-fighting helps scum.

I think everyone is probably pretty good, probably reserve judgement on the mafia genius assessment no lynching is generally a bad idea, few obvious exceptions, 36 is a short Day 1 but fine for after
