    six chambers of justice

    six chambers of justice (aka EHOBBNEHIITSC)

    an EHOBANOHAR-esque mash.
    here,
    everyone has one bullet, but not everyone has it in the same chamber.


    the premier game in kai's vitamin water aesthetic (kvwa) series.

    60+ players. freeform days (see below), 24hr nights.




    • there is no elimination vote; instead everyone has a six-shooter with one bullet to dispense justice and/or purge their enemies. in other words, each day is a perpetual ITA session where everyone gets one shot – or alternatively, a game of russian roulette where you bet some other sucker's life.
      • the playerlist will be divided into six numbered sections as evenly as possible, representing which chamber each player’s bullet rests in. if your section number matches the day number, your shot has a 100% hit rate; otherwise, it is 0%.

      • thus, the game lasts a maximum of six cycles.
      • nobody knows which chamber their bullet is in.

    • any informed faction consists of a leader and several “recruits”. there will be a special “night 0” stage for these leaders to build their teams.
      • faction leaders have a fixed number of recruits that are all used n0; they do not grow in a cult-like manner throughout the course of the game.
      • leaders are themselves unrecruitable, and any recruits that are in conflict will cancel out.
      • there may be multiple anti-town factions.
      • there may or may not be third parties.

    • pacifism modkills are active during the day, and run on a 12-hour timer which resets on each shot taken (or each modkill). If it expires, a random player who has not shot yet (and has not had a successful shot during a previous day phase) dies. day phases proceed until either all living players have expended their shots, or have been modkilled for not doing so.
    • night phases (aside from night 0) function as normal.
    • the town wins as soon as all anti-town factions are eliminated.
    • an anti-town factions wins if:
      • there are still shots remaining, but all other teams have been eliminated and they have irreversibly overpowered the town OR
      • there are no phases remaining, and their team outnumbers all others.
      • in the case of equal numbers, the team that still has a living leader will win; failing that, they will draw.



    this game will rand on october 12 2021, 7PM UTC-6:00. this commences night 0.

    In the case of multiple factions, the faction with the most members alive wins. If equal, the one(s) with a living leader win. Draws occur between those equal both in number and leader status.

    So @GGhana (and any other people on the fence about this game), allow me to phrase things differently and two-casèd-ly!

    A six-shooter is another name for a revolver (gun) with six chambers in its cylinder, each holding one bullet. In the normal course of operation, you load the cylinder, then pull the trigger, which drops the hammer on the active chamber and fires the bullet within. Then you release the trigger, and the cylinder rotates to the next chamber which (normally) has another bullet, ready to fire again.

    In this game, however, every player gets a revolver with a cylinder that looks like this:



    That's just one bullet out of six chambers - five will be empty. And nobody in the game will know whether the active chamber actually has a bullet or not. They have to guess, using their ITA.

    On each Day, every living player gets to aim at someone else with their six-shooter and pull the trigger once. If there happens to be a bullet in the chamber:

    BANG!


    Their shot is successful, their target dies, and they know they can't shoot again (so they are exempt from the pacifism kills). If not:

    ...click!

    Nothing happens – they'll have to try again the next Day, with the next chamber in their gun. There might be a bullet in that next chamber! There might not.
    But live long enough, and you will get a successful shot eventually.

    The position of each player's bullet is random, but the total amount of each position (or equivalently, the amount of possible successful shots per Day) is distributed as evenly as possible – on its face, this works out to a ~16.67% chance of any given shot being successful. So it's very likely this will feel like your normal 15% ITA mash in terms of death rates. However, the "one-bullet" mechanic adds a subtle twist, in the form of being able to evaluate who might be a threat when. If someone's shot is successful on a certain Day, you know that they're not going to be a threat in the future...and conversely, if someone shoots but misses, the chance of their next shot being successful climbs higher and higher as the game drags on.

    It's also true that – due to every player being equal in the ITA regard, and there being no vote – this game contains less overall kill power than the average mash. The possible proportions have been calibrated in an attempt at balancing this, but nothing can be guaranteed.

    While the formula for this game doesn't require 60 players, as numbers lower past the 50s the balance seems to start suffering. I would not run this game with under 48 players.

    i don’t think this game not filling really has much to do with your reputation as a host or lack thereof - even a well known host would probably have trouble filling this i think

    unfortunately a game of this size with 24 hour nights and nonstandard death mechanics that’s also multiball, has recruitment, etc is probably going to be a tough sell with our playerbase, which is used to the standard mash formula of 12/12 with ITA’s, etc

    i think a lot of people look at this game and get scared of signing up when they’ve never played anything like it before and don’t really know what to expect, so they don’t want to risk sinking so much time into such a large game without knowing what the payoff will be

    i’m not really sure what might help you be able to run games like this but maybe others have some ideas?

    Other than building that skill, I think I just need to design and run a bunch of simple games that slowly walk MUers through my whole bag of tricks :shrug:

    For what it's worth, while reputation is a factor, I would say it's more about knowing the audience you're trying to attract and working with that!! While it's cool if you want to do something more unconventional, it's useful to have at least some standard-ish elements which people will for sure enjoy, whereas the combination of having multiple unfamiliar, more risky features can be a little offputting!!

    Also, advertisement plays a major role in people signing up, regardless of reputation!! Active recruitment of players should definitely not be underestimated, as lots of people don't check signups on a regular basis and only play once invited!!!


    I could expand on this and a few other points such as specific mechanical details/game attractiveness to players/flavour/knowing the audience/overall hype in signups, but I don't want to drop an unsolicited essay here; feel free to dm me if you would like elaboration, however!!!
