    That took me less than 60 seconds.

    Maybe 3 days is fine.

    Week 1 - All Time Classics »
    Week 1 Trades are here!

    Trades
    @nutella Cold Weather Company - A Folded Letter
    Baroque pop/indie folk. Band is three guys from New Jersey, two play guitar and one plays piano, they all sing (they sort of take turns being the main vocalist on the tracks and harmonize on some); other instrumentation blends in to lovely effect. Lyrics are poetic and personal, composition is beautiful and immersive.

    with
    @staypositivefriend They Might Be Giants - Lincoln
    Lincoln is an absurd, surreal indie-pop/alt-rock masterpiece that switches between genres and styles in nearly every song. It remains consistently charming and hilarious even as the songs veer into abstract and dark territory

    @Shad Summoning - Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame
    Basically Blackened Tolkiencore

    with
    @Tangrowth Steve Roach - Structures From Silence
    "Genre: Ambient
    Theme: All time favorite (a ‘desert island’ album)
    Why I like it: I’ve suffered from a lot of anxiety and depression my whole life, and this started out as studying and sleep music for me years ago to try to calm down. It didn’t take long until I started listening to it obsessively. To this day it is still probably the most calming thing I’ve ever heard."

    @Zack Everything Everything - Get To Heaven
    eclectic pop that is extremely catchy and unique while maintaining a consistent sound and cohesiveness. if you can't get down with falsetto vocals you're gonna have a bad time though.

    with
    @ploonet They Might Be Giants - Lincoln (yes we got a double sub already!)
    I don't have a single favorite album of all time, so thought I'd pick a long-time-known, impactful one of my favorites. This (and their subsequent album Flood) helped me survive high school. TMBG's absurdity resounded with me in such a relatable and simultaneously mind-altering way (omg people make music like THIS???) that they deserve the award for my musical gateway drug to the further weirdness to come.

    @tonystarkprime John Prine - John Prine
    1971 folk-country, this is the best album of all time. Every song on this album is a hit. Etc. etc. His voice is something in between Bob Dylan and a box of nails on a chalkboard, but hey at least it's not metal.

    with
    @MyNameIsNothing Belong - October Language
    When I was getting into more ambient music, this was one of the first albums that really opened my eyes to the amount of variety and depth the genre can have. The noise and shoegaze details have wedged their way into my conscience and informed a lot of my tastes today! (also it’s October and ideal listening time for it lol)

    @Ampharos Thank You Scientist - Terraformer
    Progressive Jazz Fusion Metal. Amycore. The best album by one of my favorite artists of all time. Saw them tour this live in late 2019; best show I've ever been to by a wide margin. Music good.

    with
    @shubaka17 Halsey - Badlands
    Halsey's debut album was all about that New Americana scene that I was into at the time. Dramatic, romanticized depictions of power and life as a teen/young adult combined with reactionary tracks to the Ho Hey generation of radio music make for what feels like dark pop. Kind of like Lana Del Rey, but more enjoyable.

    @Ephemera Miracle Milk - Mili
    It's quite otherworldly. The songs can feel like a dream - from fairy tales to nightmares.

    with
    @roro__b The Blaze - Dancehall
    It's uh, dancehall I guess. Classic house beats with super simple melodies in singing that just stick, themes that are deep and nice, and that I connect to emotionally really easily. Nothing out of the ordinary but has become the source of my favorite music tbh.

    @BLOODYRAIN10001 Saya No Uta OST
    "Genres: Ambient, experimental, harsh noise
    I like the album because it's very good at setting a mood and I haven't really found anything that sounds quite like it in the few years since I've listened to it.
    Link: https://youtu.be/H0gEjUEneBI?list=PLcxmC5bnWscbSwNwxKXNu1tAJ9wXkWfS 1"

    with
    @Bloobird Jeff Rosenstock - WORRY
    Pop punk for people in their 30s who are fighting against getting old, full of bangers. The second half medley is unsubmittable to walrus but incredibly awesome.

    @soah Tristania - Beyond The Veil
    Gothic metal. It's more intense and more riff-based than most other stuff in that genre while still maintaining the full amount of dark beauty. The soprano vocals are exquisite. (It has growling too.)

    with
    @LordQuas Botch - We Are The Romans
    Classic mathcore/metalcore album (and local pog)

    @Kane Bus Driver - Thumbs Up
    Thumbs up, is probably my pick for best underground hip hop album of the 2010's. This album is probably bus drivers masterpiece. Album is packed full of fun lines, and has an allstar team of features.

    with
    @Visorslash Powderfinger - Vulture Street
    rock, throwback style when it was out of fashion but not done in the cheesy over the top way of those eras. just great rock tunes with bangin vocals

    I did a random.org list and just followed the suggestions best I could, so if you got something in a genre you hate then be more specific next time (tho i might have slightly modified my sub when i saw who i got get rolled). If you want to see the full submissions doc click here.

    You have until next Monday to get back to your person with your thoughts on the album! (Which, ya know, can be one word or if you're a nerd like me a full write up). I will be putting up next week submissions like, Thurs again or Friday, tbd. I think in the future (at least for next week just to try it out) I will probably assign people *before* we swap. We can see how we prefer after that.

    Also like, you are allowed to listen to other albums on the list lol. I am going to for sure. Glgl! Hope everyone enjoys their trades

    (im assuming the album im listening to is actually just called thumbs, couldnt find a thumbs up album)

    initial thoughts: its fine. I listened to it front to back, nothing particularly grabbed me about it, probably something id enjoy more listening to the songs separately. might do that at some point in the future but for now at least its just okay. not bad by any stretch but nothing that said hey you have to listen to more of this.

    so I've listened to the Saya No Uta OST a couple of times now

    it's uh

    definitely something

    was always going to struggle a bit with this because:

    1. I'm not a huge VGM fan.
    2. I'm not a huge ambient music fan.
    3. I do most of my active music listening while walking alone in the evening. It is dark. I did not enjoy listening to this while walking alone in the dark.

    will give it a few more goes, it definitely hits the creepy atmosphere it's going for, and there's a couple of tracks which have some lovely violin in them, but overall it's kinda in this spot where it's too VGM/ambienty for me to really enjoy actively listening to it, but also a bit too harsh and spiky to enjoy as background listening

    Have listened a few times to TMBG - Lincoln. Initial impressions are that I like but don't love it, though I haven't paid much attention to the lyrics which I understand is a big part of their appeal. Pretty sure I've heard Ana Ng before, and a few songs from Flood, but otherwise this is new to me.

    I don't have as much time as I'd like or thought I would be able to listen to new music that isn't already something I know or on my list because I listen to so much while I'm working, and the next few weeks look pretty rough, but I'm going to at least listen to my assigned album and DM Shad my thoughts. Hopefully despite my usual thoughts on Metal I'll still find something to appreciate in it! We'll see if I get around to listening to and/or saying words about any of the others, but I'll try to refrain from comments if I do unless they're of at least some positive nature.

    I've listened to Jeff Rosen's WORRY twice, I wouldn't listen to it regularly but it's nice. Out of the entire album Festival Song is my favorite track, I particularly like the last half minute and how it just kind of crescendos there. Was good at setting a mood, I found that I got more into it the second time when I was tired, had eaten too much pizza, and had liquid in a bottle to swing around. Me being completely out of it seemed to fit the music well.

    So yeah, it was good although it wasn't really in my wheelhouse genrewise. The vocals really reminded me of Days of Daze.

    Apparently I pulled up a rerelease with bonus tracks and it's actually normal length

    But the best part is I didn't even question 190 until I was reading the wikipedia page

    I had a pretty awesome experience with Quiet Friend. I absentmindedly went downstairs to get a sandwich and got to thinking wow I really like this along the way, but after I got back upstairs it dawned on me that there was no possible way I could have been physically hearing the music when I thought that. It just kind of planted itself in my head.

    still roughly at about this place with it - ultimately it's not just me really, but definitely interesting

    Silent Sorrow definitely my favourite track for the really lovely violin, but the added tension into the song from the synths means it's still not something I could ever really see myself choosing to listen to

    it's doing exactly what it's intended to but an eerie tense feeling is just not really a vibe that I want to get myself into all that often

    took a skim through one track off most of the other albums

    John Prine is absolutely insane and something I'm definitely going to be listening to for a while, and Cold Weather Company and Bus Driver were both good enough to get onto my current playlist of stuff that I should listen to more

    in particular I cannot get over how good Angel From Montgomery is, it's Raymond Carver-like in the way it pulls out vivid scenes from a tiny number of words, it's just three verses and a chorus and yet you can picture her in your mind in complete detail

    and he wrote it when he was 25

    disgusting

    Since some people obviously don't know this, even though it should be BASIC COMMON SENSE, I guess i have to point it out. if you are PR, and are about to be misyeeted, YOU NEED TO CLAIM. You need to claim with at least 45 seconds, preferably 1 minute left so that people have time to refresh and unvote you. If you claim at 30 seconds, if you claim at 15 seconds, if you don't claim at all, YOU WILL BE MISYEETED. PR staying alive is extremely important for town. There was a post on the general mafia forum about win rates when PR is yeeted D1 in turbos and its 1/14 or some $%#!.

    I'm not going to call this gamethrowing, because some new players might not understand how important PR is to a setup, and others come from sites where you can't claim as PR. But please, for the love of god, claim if you're being killed. Thank you.

    Copypasta over.

    Yet King Bowser is just as stubborn and insists the kitty goes in his pocket, despite numerous failed attempts.

    In the end, kitty was never pocketed. Did not survive the process, but left Bowser bloody and shredded and looking quite the fool.

    Then everyone else in town is like, dude, Bowser, what happened to your faaaaaace. And your cat.

    I uh... cut myself shaving. I'm still totally townie, honest.

    Gave the John Prine record a precursory spin just now, and it's definitely enjoyable! Prine has been on my radar for a good while now, but I've never listened to him before today. Country in general is pretty far out of my usual wheelhouse, and when I do feel the urge for some twang I'll just toss on something safer, more modern, and alt-adjacent (e.g. Songs: Ohia or Sturgill Simpson). If I am going for something a bit more classic I've always opted for the self titled Townes Van Zandt record and called it a day.

    I think I'm better off for having held off on listening to this until now. Good instrumentals that aren't too complex and vocals that lean a bit more into Dylan territory than I was maybe expecting (without getting overbearingly eccentric), which collectively make for a fine background listen, but the lyricism is where this album obviously shines. Great storytelling on just about every track on here, and despite sounding pretty beyond his years, Prine captures a certain timeless mid-twenties malaise that hits pretty close to home. I'll hopefully have a chance to listen a bit deeper this weekend and delve a bit deeper into the songwriting, but on first couple of listens standouts for me were "Illegal Smile", "Sam Stone", "Pretty Good", "Angel From Montgomery", and "Donald and Lydia".

    Well done

    listened to "a folded letter" by cold weather company a few times today - first impression is that i really like it! stlistically speaking, it reminds me a bit of the fleet foxes but with a darker, more theatrical flair. the songs have a great sense of momentum to them, and almost all of the songs build up to something interesting or had a moment that made me say: "whoa, that's cool"

    some notes from my listening sessions -

    "another involved" has such a cool, mysterious vibe to it, and i love the usage of vocal harmonies. will definitely be a track on my regular rotation for a while!

    -"when you run" has an incredible final minute, and i absolutely love the strings

    -love the build-up in "ink and paper", and how the piano + the aggressiveness of the final chorus give it a foreboding vibe

    -love the surprisingly jazzy piano solo in "head spins", and thought it was one of the most lyrically compelling tracks on the album too

    -i really like the weird, dissonant violin(?) toward the end of "reflections", it was so out of place that it was one of the most memorable moments on the album for me

    -last minute or so of "gettsyburg" SLAPS

    i think this is an album i need to give a few more listens to fully process, but i found myself really enjoying it, and i can see it being something i come back to in the future. i'm a fan!

    I listened to the Botch album twice. I find the first several tracks to be completely inaccessible. The album progressively improves from there as they start to use more conventional time signatures. So basically my thoughts on this mathcore album are that it's fine whenever it's not being mathcore. A universal theme of -core albums is that they completely miss my musical tastes, so being tolerable was at the high end of my expectations here. That's about all I get from this album. Sometimes I listen to really weird stuff where I can't figure out what's going on, but it all seems to just work for reasons that go over my head. In this case, what's going over my head is the reasons why this album works for other people. They may not actually be playing notes completely at random, but I don't think I'd enjoy it any less if they actually were. I've already forgotten everything I just listened to.

    Summoning is very anti-angsty haha

    But I'm curious if you experience it differently
