@vanity. interested to hear your thoughts on the new one when you get the chance though (understandable if thats not for awhile, long albums)
i'd recommend you at least check out the video for the last song on that album though (goodbye). Even though its 17min long theres some pretty cool stuff in it and it fits the music well
:wiwe
oop
yeah i’ll probably give we had good times, don’t forget about that a try. if i give thoughts on it though, they’ll be much more brief.
gonna delay on account of the holidays if that wasn't obv
might have smthn else in the woodworks too
see ya next week famalam, theme is gonna be Best Album of 2021 if ya wanna think ahead
:wiwe
think i've given enough listens to sewerslvt's we had good times, don't forget that. i thought it was vastly more enjoyable than drowning in the sewer, and i'm debating whether i like this or draining love story more. regardless, i actually really like this change of pace for sewerslvt's music, as i get the sense that this is by far the most passionate album she's released. maybe the most consistent one too? but it's not really a drum and bass record. i mean, there's elements of drum and bass here, and it's not like i can't tell this is a sewerslvt record, but this is definitely pulling from different styles of electronic dance music. but sewerslvt's takes on these styles are incredibly hard hitting and in your face. my main problem with a lot of mainstream edm is that i just don't really feel anything after listening to it? but i get a very clear sense of what sewerslvt is trying to do here. most mainstream edm i just end up finding boring, but this album is apocalyptic, tortured, melodic, and sorta surreal at times too.
i actually found this a significantly more fulfilling listen than drowning in the sewer. mostly because i think there was very clear intent on what sewerslvt wanted to do. drowning in the sewer was 80 minutes, and felt like it was 80 minutes because it could be. there just wasn't enough rhyme or reason to it as an album. we had good times, don't forget that is an album that's 90 minutes because it needed to be. without all 90 minutes of this, sewerslvt couldn't display her emotions of mourning, anguish, anxiety, and hopelessness. i don't really think it's perfect; like with pretty much of all sewerslvt's releases, some of these songs feel a bit redundant at times, like ultradespair, [sick, twisted, and demented], and parts of light at the end of the tunnel. but that didn't really deter from my enjoyment of the record that much? i ended up loving what this album offered me. it sorta sounds like sewerslvt's music as you knew it, but matured. this also feels like her channeling her emotions in the most effective way on an album of hers yet?
i thought self destruction worldwide broadcast, the last thing she sent me, borderline, whatever, blissful overdose, and die alone were especially awesome. this album just felt like a satisfying experience for me personally. it is a bit of a stylistic departure from her prior works for sure, but i think that may be because i think she realized that atmospheric drum and bass can be a bit limited with what she could do? this album does feel like her spreading her wings a bit. i also think that this album is phenomenally diverse with some of the sounds and ideas it offers at times compared to drowning in the sewer and maybe even draining love story as well. however, i will admit that it doesn't feel like it's to the point where this would be a great foundation for another album. it does feel like it's lacking in ideas at times, especially on a song like ultradespair. or, uh. maybe what i'm trying to say is it can feel a bit one dimensional.
i really hope that sewerslvt is okay, especially given the context of why this album exists in the first place. apparently, this is also supposed to be her last album. who knows if that's true or if she'll release new music under a different pseudonym, but this was definitely a great electronic music album that i feel like i'm going to revisit a decent amount in the coming days.

Week 6 Album Exchange: 2021 AOTY
AOTY for 2021 IN YOUR OPINION... or like, a similarly very good album from this year that isn't one everyone has heard or maybe one that you think people will like. You know, whatever you want really. It's a loose guideline
We're back after a little holiday hiatus haha. I'm half expecting this week to be low on numbers on account of long break + later notice, but hopefully excited to hear some 2021 bangers

Trentemøller - The Last Resort
I liked the first track. But then nothing really happened for the next hour. I think there was one moment where I actually noticed the music and stopped to focus on it but then it was over. I put off writing a review because I thought I should listen a second time just to figure out something to say, but then my headphones broke so I've been less able to listen to stuff and I just haven't found any motivation to put this on again. Sorry.
quas wha happenin
i got busy and would have felt bad doing it like, a week or two later lol

Here's the doc for interested parties, might need to go on album exchange pause for a bit unless someone else wants to take over. Maybe monthly isn't a bad idea? Could maybe swing that

Album Exchange 7 - The Return
SORRY FOR THE DISAPPEARANCE! Walrus + irl interferes, wcyd. But we're back with the 7th Album Exchange, I'm moving this to a monthly thing because I think it gives more people the chance to participate (cough cough and aligns better with my admittedly pretty busy schedule currently).
The theme for this month is a Returning Album, so something that's either a return for an artist after a long time gap or a return to form after some uh, less than quality work. Or any other way you can justify the theme of a return!
@staypositivefriend @soah @Sunbae @ladd @vanity. @roro__b @Visorslash @Kane @lute @MyNameIsNothing @Ampharos @shubaka17 @nutella @Shad @Arapocalypse @Bloobird @Logic @Ace Marvel @PunchyTheCat @tonystarkprime @benneh @Ephemera @TripleHaven
I'd like a submission to come in by this Sunday, the 7th ideally sooner rather than later because at some point during that day I'll mix up and assign partners.
While I'm at it, I think I'll try to put up the signups for the next month towards the end of August and conclude them by September and have that be the regular schedule so it lines up on a monthly schedule a little better.
Form for this month

A very dramatic folk album put out by Joey Batey and Madeleine Hyland, Broadway veterans from the UK (and Batey is the bard on The Witcher on Netflix). The two of them are excellent vocalists and highlight themselves in different tracks across the album, but the best best vocals and songwriting are in Farewell Wanderlust. Great lyricism (with obvious Broadway influence) and

Baroque / indie prog / art rock / known for elaborate story concept albums / insert some other pretentious $%#! $%#! here? TDH are just fun but might not be everyone's thing. For catfit, this is their first full album since the completion of their 5-act concept album series in 2016, and marks the beginning of a new ambitious series. Instrumentation and composition is creative and engaging, I don't know that much about the story/themes but it's apparently some kind of sci-fi dystopia.

@Bloobird Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked At Me
Minimalist folk songs about your wife dying of cancer, this is not an album for happy boys. It is very good though. As creating it was almost a form of therapy after his wife died I feel it fits the theme.
You have until the end of the month to listen to your album and get back to the other person.

The Amazing Devil - The Horror and the Wild
The Rockrose and the Thistle: cool atmosphere, vocals not super my jam
The Horror and the Wild: this is good, also good atmosphere. vocals still aren't quite my thing but this is a good song anyway
Wild Blue Yonder: I think the musical influence is why I don't like this. I am not really a big fan of musicals. The song is obviously good, but I am finding myself not super enjoying it. It's not bad at all, just not my style sadly. Good vocal talent.
Welly Boots: The vocals work well for this song. I just think the vocals (and to a lesser extent the lyrics) aren't really connecting with me. The instrumentals are quite good, but the male vocalist is either a you love it or you don't type I think.
Farewell Wanderlust: okay, now its getting somewhere. This is good, the vocals are emotive and building up to something great. This is indeed great. Would recommend this song to anyone.
Fair: b a l l a d
That Unwanted Animal: I think Hyland is by far the better vocalist, the songs she leads are clearly the best ones on the album. So much emotion in her voice, it is a joy to listen to. Great lyrics too.
Marbles: shrugs b a l l a d
Battle Cries: good lyrics, these fellas are clearly great at putting songs together. song doesn't do a lot for me in general, but its clear the album is a good one.
Overall: The horror and the wild and farewell wanderlust are the clear standouts on the album with that unwanted animal in third. Unfortunately on the whole, the album isn't really to my taste, the broadway/musical aspects turn me off a bit, i'm just not into super theatrical music. Clearly well written and performed, and they obviously have talent especially in lyrics, but this album would be better given to someone who loves indie folk, I'm sure they'd get a real kick out of this album.
I would definitely return for farewell wanderlust, horror and the wild and unwanted animal if i wanted a bit more, but otherwise, the rest aren't super for me. Good album though, thanks for sending.
that's fair
completed my first listen to Antimai
wow this is proggy as hell, full on rock-opera stuff
instrumentation is generally nice, if a little...theatrical? half the songs sound like the 'scene setting' song in some scifi musical, that's the general vibe I'm getting from the whole album, no plot, just lots of those kind of scene-setting crowd songs. there's also a lot of weird percussion choices that really don't work for me, idk, almost certainly a deliberate stylistic choice, I think I could get on board with this with a few more listens, it's not really too dissimilar to stuff like Owen Pallett or Anathallo that I love
but ultimately I'm really not into the vocals, the lyrics or the 'concept' at all and that's killing it for me, sorry, I think a few more listens and I might be there on the instrumentation, but this sci-fi dystopia seems identical to a million other caste-based sci-fi dystopias without adding any particularly unusually interesting elements. and the vocalist EMPHASISES a lot of words and ENUNCIATES so much and it just makes the lyrics that I'm ALREADY not that into sound really SILLY
I think they want me to take it srsly, it's really earnest, but I just can't, and then it all just starts sounding a little Spinal Tap
sry nut
also dang this is basically the exact opposite to A Crow Looked At Me both thematically and musically

Hiatus - Distancer - 7.0
This has a nice vibe to it. Some slightly unorthodox instrumentation combined with a series of more eclectic trance beats make for an enjoyable listening experience. I really struggle to word this in another way but trust me it's not an insult, but this is something my mom would like.
The album really makes good use of vocals (spoken words on Arrival totally took me by surprise by the way), like on Shadowless which is a stand out track for me. And features some other distinctive features like distant moaning strings.
One of my main problems with a lot of it, especially the first few tracks, is it's a little too mellow for me and in a way that doesn't mix it up either. I like mellow albums, Depression Cherry is one of my go to's, but I think Distancer vs Arrival vs Your Place is Empty vs Realism etc all have very similar identites, with maybe marginal changes. I would have liked to see him mix up these a little more, or maybe even just split them up in the track list. Partially why I like Shadowless so much is its a bit of a change in the tracklist and feels refreshing, and this goes into Semblance which is a more subdued piece similar to the start but it flows better because it's not preceded by a similar sounding song.
This style of album can really shine in creating a single cohesive listening experience, and I think it somewhat achieves that. But it lacks the X factor to really sell it as more than a late night passive listening mixtape I think, which is a bit of a shame.
The album continues in a similar vein. I do think People In Buildings is a particularly strong showing of the album's strengths, complete with those signature wailing strings, intricate drums, and subdued synths all underscored by a rumbling bassline.
At The Gates is a nice vocal interlude, the singer (Malahat I think?) is standout. Phenomal I have to say, really sells a core identity of this album. The ending is a bit weak, but the plunking pianos set a nice backdrop for her to deliver her best performance on the album even though she has multiple features. Honestly I could listen to just an album of her, very impressed.
Mercy mixes it up shockingly, bringing in a depressive breakbeat sound, which mixes much better than I expected with the other instrumentation, and is a natural fit for the vibe. It continues to build with some sweet spacey guitars getting involved, and show off the versatility of the artist. Again I really think the album could have benefitted from maybe mixing up the tracklist to make it so the very similar slower songs didn't all appear at the start.
The album finishes with an interesting little spoken word piece on Human, which honestly I'm not super sure how to feel about. I think the delivery sounds almost, robotic in a way? Doesn't flow as well as I think it could, like he's TRYING to fit it to music, which ends up making it a little more awkward than I think it could be, but it's still a fun little closer nonetheless.
TLDR
Very nice chillwave/trance that nails a theme but starts a little slow and really picks up in the later half with some more interesting tracks.

dang id love to do this
Album Exchange 8 - The Debut
I said this was a thing now. Last month a lot of people found the theme too hard, so this time the theme is super easy, just submit a debut album from a band / artist! You have until the end of August (that is through August 31st) to submit your album.
As we adjust more to the current monthly schedule expect the signups for each month to go up around this time, and you'll have until the end of that month to listen and digest your assigned album. Don't worry if it overlaps into the next signups or whatever (ok this isn't strictly enforced so you never HAVE to worry lol)
If anyone ever wants to be dropped (or added) to the ping list just let me know and I can do that no problemo btw.
Edit: HERE is the link for this month you prolly need that huh

Awesome theme!
@ what counts as a "debut album"
i'm saying "first full length album" and if theres anything more complicated i'm just gonna say "its a for fun exchange nothing is ranked so who cares go with your gut"
:wiwe
Okay I'll play this round.
The problem is I listen to metal.
Oh if this is open to new signups then please add me. I like most genres but do not want to be submitted to slurs or similar derogatory language.
You can tell I'm a top-tier player because I can reliably trick people with 50x the mafia experience into thinking I'm scum.
Album Exchange 8 - The Debut
Apologies for the slight delay, my apartment doesn't have internet until the 7th (hell) and there was zero chance I was going to do this on my phone & I didn't make it out and about yesterday. Some fun albums in the mix this month and a nice healthy crowd of people, so I'm hype! Hopefully random.org was a little more kind to people and didn't pair everyone awkwardly. Only one switch from the rand this week as shockingly Bloody's "no top 40" request which I NEVER thought would actually come into play did, rip sk8er boy.
@BLOODYRAIN10001 SwagManSwag - Inter-Dimensional Stupidity
A weird mix of tracks with some interesting samples. Electronic stuff, post-rock, a song that's just a sax solo, you got it.

and
@TripleHaven RAISE A SUILEN - ERA
Japanese electronic rock. Very fast paced with some cool vocal contrast. Look up lyrics at your own risk (I never have).
@Ephemera Mili - Mag Mel
It's really weird. Vocals are distinctly strange in a way that appeals to me (might not to others, but I can hope!) Lyrics are pretty deep, and range from weird to depressing to strangely bittersweet.
and
@remember The Residents - Meet The Residents
My favorite debut pop album. The tape mix shows a lot of ingenuity for the seventies and the guitar breaks combine with crusty horns and intermittent jazz structures to it to create an album reminiscent of early Krautrock with a parodic horror-kitsch edge.
@Chocolate Teapot Laïs - Laïs
It's folk music by a flemish (belgian) band. Most songs are in flemish (a variant of dutch), some consist entirely of made-up words. You do not need to understand the lyrics to enjoy the music, though some of the songs tell a (mostly tragic) story.
and
@nutella Adult Jazz - Gist Is
Experimental, not sure how to describe but lots of really cool vocals and rhythms, cryptic lyrics about queerness and other themes, generally surreal vibes
@LordQuas Detektivbyrån - E18 Album
swedish music box street performer folk. blissfully tranquil
and
@Visorslash hunters and collectors - hunters and collectors
because i like good music
@staypositivefriend Stomach Book - Stomach Book
an experimental rock/noise pop/emo debut album with a broad range of influences that touches a lot upon themes of queerness and self-exploration. it's full of bangers and fascinating musical ideas and is an incredibly promising debut
and
@MyNameIsNothing M83 - Dead Cities, Red Seas, Lost Ghosts
textural electronic instrumentals from future synth pop mastermind. My personal favorite of their exceptional discography and an all time favorite of mine in general!!!
You have until the end of the month to listen to your albums and get back to your assigned person, gl and have fun!

Yay Korean adjacent music![]()
me 🤝 jess in the descriptions lol
cool stuff everyone, looking forward to my trade and others i wanna get to as well

Laïs - frist impressions, very cool and bloobird-y vibe/instruments/harmonies, def makes me feel like im in some green fields of medieval northern europe lol. Prob not looking up lyric translations on the first listen but might later, can tell that some of it is more gibberishy which is fun (second track lol, i love all the vocal articulation of these sounds).
3rd song, slower round-ish(/madrigal? idk) is nice. 4th and 5th, really enjoying the harmonies here, and the percussion, hype.
Kinda dont care for the song in English tbh.
7- omg the fiddle coming in YESSSSSSSS love it, but then the guitar...feels out of place meh
8- more of a haunting/dark feel, cool
9 has enjoyable syncopated rhythms, 10 is nice not really a standout, 11 the rock beat is an interesting changeup idk how i feel about it
12 *pats top of album* this bad boy can fit so many languages in it lol
13 this exists, 14 this is neat ig, second half gets annoying
overall really hype album, had a lot of fun at first but then i was sorta losing interest in the back half but the overall effect is enjoyable! will give it another pass with lyrics hopefully
avatar art credit to chardonnay/bland
Detektivbyrån - E18 Album
I enjoyed it. I had it one while I was doing other things and it was as it said on the tin, a pretty fun, tranquil experience. Going into each of the tracks seems kinda pointless but I enjoyed my time here enough.
A good 7 out of 10 kind of album, where it is nice to have on sometimes but you're not always searching for it.
Sorry I don't have much to say about it lol.

Mili - Mag Mel
Back when I was a teenager, I'd listen to the Oricon top 100 (Japanese music charts) every year. Why I say this is that I found the pop stylings of this album very conventional for releases in the first decade of the 2000s, so hearing this sort of this isn't as mindblowing to me (although the fact that it was released in 2014 was kind of surprising since the sound is a bit dated) as it'd be to your normal Western music fan. There were a few interesting ideas on this record, and the second half was definitely stronger than the first, but some of the more eclectic tracks being offered up next to bog-standard j-pop songs made the inconsistency seem less like an intentional choice and more like a lack of cohesion. Also, the elephant in the room is that the vocal mixing is very, very bad. I'm sure the lyrics on this are great as presented by Ephemera, and I'll have to look them up later while listening to it again to understand what she's saying.
Standout tracks:
Friction - I liked the first third. The piano has swing and it plays some interesting notes. Once the violin kicks in the arrangement becomes more kitschy and less interesting.
Ephemeral - I assume this is the usernamular track for your MU account name, lol. I like the composition, but this track being solo piano really showcased how bad the action is on whatever they used for instruments. It's either a VST, a Yamaha, or just a bad sound studio. The lack of nice timbre on the piano made the song harder to enjoy for me.
Imagined Flight - Basically like the above with a great composition, and all of the instruments being added into the mix made it way more enjoyable to listen to.
Flops:
Sacramentum - I like chants, but the her vocal range isn't very engaging when she's doing her anime voice gimmick, so this a capella track didn't work for me at all.
Witch's Invitation - The riffs are interesting, but the song is two minutes too long, so the end of the album drags a bit and doesn't leave me satisfied.
Overall, I had an alright time with the album. I saved three of the singles to my gaming playlist.
completely fair, this album isn't as good as their second
9.8 and turtle's heart are really the ones that make me like it most - the first 6 songs in the album are good, the rest are imo a tad forgettable
would you believe me that i'd never heard of the track ephemeral from mili until much much after i'd started calling myself ephemera? lol
will get to your album real soon!
