The Castle (FF8, 148) vs Find Your Way (FF8, 119)
Blinded by Light (FF13, 41) vs Dancing Mad (FF6, 200) - So what if Dancing Mad has already won once? It's Uematsu's magnum opus so if any song is going to win twice, might as well be this oneJust remember this beautiful boss theme came out of a SNES. The 1 health slash part is also blessed.
Caius' Theme (FF13, 10) vs Freya's Theme (FF9, 154)
Clash on the Big Bridge (FF5, 147) vs Balamb Garden (FF8, 40)
The amount of votes against Man with the Machine Gun pains me T_T
Looks like we lost @PforPianist
Well, just got back from my trip and I'm updating tomorrow morning either way.
Round 3 is complete!
There were no tie breaks this time due to an odd number of voters, but 9 out of 16 match-ups were decided 5-4. The roster of past champions took a hit with the eliminations of Freya's Theme and Eternal Wind. Top 15 all-timers Liberi Fatali, Dark Messenger, The Extreme, and The Castle are also packing their bags. Dancing Mad and Still More Fighting are the last two winners in the mix. Birth of the God and Clash on the Big Bridge also hung on from the top 15 crew. While that field feels a bit more thinned out than usual, Clash on the Big Bridge, Dancing Mad, and Still More Fighting are all tied for the most cumulative votes so far this year. They still have a bit of work to do to dethrone Liberi Fatali from its 1st overall position.
Newcomer Caius' Theme is giving FF13 a top 16 appearance for only the second time, following Born Anew last year. It is the final remaining new entry. FF14 accomplished the feat of pushing five tracks into the top 16. This has only happened twice before, both by FF6, in 2014 and 2019.
The biggest upset was technically 169th-ranked Crimson Sunrise knocking out 30th-ranked The Dreadful Fight, but as a relative newcomber in its third year, that placement is a bit skewed. The biggest established upsets were 104th-ranked Fealty over 14th-ranked Eternal Wind and 73rd-ranked The Man with the Machine Gun over 12th-ranked The Extreme.
The top 16 will be far less representative than last year. FF3, FF9, FF11, FF12, and FF15 all dropped out, joining 1, 2, and Tactics on the sidelines.
Here's a weird random stat. Final Fantasy 11 and Final Fantasy 13 have both appeared in exactly 193 match-ups since this game began. It's unusual given this includes qualification stages and advancements where games aren't equally represented. I noticed because my voting record was 103-90 for FF13 and 102-91 for FF11. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Round 4!
Clash on the Big Bridge (FF5, 153) vs Steel Reason (FF14, 63)
Dancing Mad (FF6, 207) vs Caius' Theme (FF13, 15)
The Man with the Machine Gun (FF8, 60) vs Fealty (FF14, 48)
Birth of the God (FF7, 189) vs Crimson Sunrise (FF14, 25)

High Treason (FF14, 49) vs Still More Fighting (FF7, 221)
Within the Giant (FF4, 106) vs Find Your Way (FF8, 125)
Round 4!
Clash on the Big Bridge (FF5, 153) vs Steel Reason (FF14, 63) ~~ FF14 is fabulous, but the only tracks that might knock me off this wagon are Home Sweet Home and Within the Giant.

The Man with the Machine Gun (FF8, 60) vs Fealty (FF14, 48)
Birth of the God (FF7, 189) vs Crimson Sunrise (FF14, 25) - I'd grown to like this FF14 song. It's pretty awesome, but thems the breaks
The Sight of Spira (FF10, 130) vs On Windy Meadows (FF14, 103) - yeah, these FF14 songs are good. Not quite there for me, but seems to be a great soundtrack.
Succession of Witches (FF8, 90) vs Home Sweet Home (FF5, 125)
High Treason (FF14, 49) vs Still More Fighting (FF7, 221)
Within the Giant (FF4, 106) vs Find Your Way (FF8, 125)

Clash on the Big Bridge (FF5, 153) vs Steel Reason (FF14, 63) (This is a sad match up T_T)

Within the Giant (FF4, 106) vs Find Your Way (FF8, 125)
Clash on the Big Bridge (FF5, 153) vs Steel Reason (FF14, 63)
Gilgamesh is a mainstay of the series since FF5. His canonical ability to appear and reappear across the various FF universes due tohave made him such an iconic character that anyone who's played one or two games since FF5 can recognize alongside Cid. Clash on the big bridge is arguably a larger part of his legacy than Ekidu given how great of a boss theme it really is. Hearing it's reprise in FF14 was one of the highlights of ARR and gave me comfort going forward with the game knowing that it wouldn't just ignore established parts of the franchise.him falling in and out of the void
Steel Reason meanwhile is both the worst parts and best parts of FF. When it plays in 14: ARR, it's the highlight of otherwise bad segments of the story. During and after the expansions, whenever you hear steel reason get a reprise, you immediately recognize it and know that whatever quest instance you're doing is going to be fun and involve good writing. One of the few things Stormblood did right was how it utilized this song.
Clash on the Big Bridge
Dancing Mad (FF6, 207) vs Caius' Theme (FF13, 15)
This entire Dancing mad segment is major spoilers for FF6 final boss fight.Dancing Mad is not only Uematsu's magnum opus; Dancing Mad is the epitome of both a character theme and a boss battle score. The boss fight is composed to be in layers instead of segments, with the different motions of dancing mad correlating to different parts of the ascended god Kefka's conflicting personality, and yet each individual part has portions of Kefka's other theme sampled into them. This song perfectly orchestrates the incredibly long boss battle into feeling like an eternal war against an all-powerful deity where the heroes can never let their guard up lest the 1 health slash occur.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk on why Dancing Mad should be the first two time winner. If the rest of that isn't enough, it was composed to come out of a SNES
I haven't played 13 so can't comment on Caius theme context.
Dancing Mad
The Man with the Machine Gun (FF8, 60) vs Fealty (FF14, 48)
While I often understate my already overstated love of FF8, Fealty is the only area theme in FF14 that had me want to ride through the zone on my mount and then look into the bottoms of all the canyons and explore the tiny details of every narrow pass. This not only perfectly encapsulates how Ishgard is portrayed prior to their expansion but gives the zone such an adventurous and yet dangerous tone throughout. Doing leve's there to get my botanist up to lvl 50 with this music on the whole time was a highlight of the game lol.
Fealty
Birth of the God (FF7, 189) vs Crimson Sunrise (FF14, 25)
I abstain
The Sight of Spira (FF10, 130) vs On Windy Meadows (FF14, 103)
I am happy they changed OWM to Saltswept in La Noscea tbh
Sight of Spira
Succession of Witches (FF8, 90) vs Home Sweet Home (FF5, 125)
Edea's theme is another song I have a lot of nostalgia for. It's such a suspenseful song in a game with a ton of great cinematic music.
Home Sweet Home when I hear it makes me think FF5 was a lot better than it was. To me in the way I've always heard it, it is a perfect melody for symbolizing a lot of the melancholy tone of FF5, and the overall sad state the Warriors of Light tend to find themselves in after the end credits. Whether it is how their hard work will forever be forgotten due to the closing of a time loop, the entire story of SoP, etc.
The FF5: Dear Friends album's lyric version is also GOAT tbh
Home Sweet Home
High Treason (FF14, 49) vs Still More Fighting (FF7, 221)
If I have High Treason to look forward to in Shadowbringers... then I am hype!!!
Still more fighting though is just an amazing battle theme.
Still More Fighting
Within the Giant (FF4, 106) vs Find Your Way (FF8, 125)
This is for not including Relm's theme!(and because I love the middle bit of Find Your Way a lot)
Find Your Way
Oh wow thanks I hate it, this was HARD!
Round 4
Clash on the Big Bridge (FF5, 153) - SUPER HARD, LOVE THE FF14 TUNE
Caius' Theme (FF13, 15) - SUPER HARD BUT PREVIOUS WINNER TIEBREAKER
The Man with the Machine Gun (FF8, 60) - HARDER THAN IT DESERVES TO BE
Crimson Sunrise (FF14, 25) -DON'T CARE THAT MUCH
On Windy Meadows (FF14, 103) - SUPER HARD, BOTH VERY CHILL
Succession of Witches (FF8, 90) - NOT HARD BUT DON'T CARE THAT MUCH
High Treason (FF14, 49) vs Still More Fighting (FF7, 221) - I HATE THIS. PING ME IF I REALLY HAVE TO PICK ONE.
Within the Giant (FF4, 106) - DON'T REALLY CARE BUT NOT A FAN OF FIRE CAVERN

Succession of Witches (FF8, 90)
Still More Fighting (FF7, 221)
Find Your Way (FF8, 125)
That wraps up the round of 16! We have five repeat offenders in the quarterfinals, including two former winners in Dancing Mad and Still More Fighting. Home Sweet Home got this far for the first time, with a previous best of losing a 7-7 tie break in the round of 16. The Man with the Machine Gun is still alive with no prior finish above the third round. It has advanced through each stage so far by a single vote or tie. And Crimson Sunrise, in its third year on the roster, has jumped up from 169th place and no prior advancement. It becomes the third FF14 track to get here in three years after a six year drought.
The most successful track this year is now Clash on the Big Bridge, with Dancing Mad and Still More Fighting one vote behind. Aerith's Theme now stands as the highest-ranked track to never make the top 8, one over To Zanarkand.
Random.org saw fit to pair the two lowest ranked and the two highest ranked tracks, guaranteeing that one of Crimson Sunrise or The Man with the Machine Gun will advance and one of Still More Fighting or Dancing Mad will not. The latter two have only actually faced each other once before despite standing at 2nd and 3rd all time. It was the third round of 2019, in which Still More Fighting pulled through 6-4. None of the other match-ups have occurred before.

The quarterfinals actually ended up being the most lopsided round so far, with every pairing finishing 7-3 except Crimson Sunrise, which still won by a two vote margin of 6-4 plus tie break. And here we are. For better or worse, fate guaranteed a Final Fantasy 5 track will be appearing in the final for the first time ever. On the other side, 169th-ranked Crimson Sunrise will need one of the biggest late upsets in the game's history if it wants to get past 3rd-ranked Dancing Mad to enter the final. Who are we sending through?

Clash on the Big Bridge (FF5, 167) vs Home Sweet Home (FF5, 137)
Dancing Mad (FF6, 220) vs Crimson Sunrise (FF14, 36)
Easily my two favorite songs from FF5, and two of my favorites from the entire franchise. I have a combined voting track record of 50-4 between them. This is rough.
I fell in love with Home Sweet Home hosting this game. Clash on the Big Bridge has been a favorite of mine since I first heard people posting MIDIs of it online in the mid-90s. All else being equal, nostalgia won out.
Clash on the Big Bridge (FF5, 167) vs Home Sweet Home (FF5, 137)
Anyone who's participated in my non-vgm music games here knows I am a huge sucker for long songs. Why be great for five minutes when you can be great for 17? For a very long time I have weighed opponents of Dancing Mad with a sort of handicap on the grounds that it already won, but that was nine years ago. The argument just doesn't hold for me anymore, and I've voted for Dancing Mad in all five of its match-ups getting here.
But I have also spent the better part of my game time over the past year indulging in the vast and lush world of Final Fantasy 14. Nearing the end of the 5.0 MSQ, I can safely call it my favorite game in the franchise. And funnily enough, my reason for that is not much different from Dancing Mad. It has, perhaps, not had a single grand moment as captivating to me as the pinnacles of FF6 and FF10, but there's just so damn much of it and it's all so consistently great from Heavensward on. Stormblood is still my favorite expansion, though Shadowbringers has a lot of potential to overtake it, and Kugane is my favorite place in Stormblood.
Any other year I might have voted differently, but this turned out to feel the easier of the two pairings when I actually sat down to pick one.

Both tracks are great, but Clash is one of my all-time favorite vgm tracks, let alone a Final Fantasy track.
Dancing Mad (FF6, 220) vs Crimson Sunrise (FF14, 36)
Crimson Sunrise is really beautiful and a wonderful track that's grown on me more over the rounds. But I really don't think the whole compares to the work done in Dancing Mad
Which is probably gonna lead to a stressful final to watch votes for
I thought I had already voted, apparently it didn't go through ^^'

My votes here should be fairly obvious given previous commentary
I just don't want to see "picking x because dancing mad won already' next round as an excuse!!!!
I concede defeat to Dancing Mad. If it wins I'll be happy.
Also, I think Clash and Home Sweet Home is gonna be resolved in a tie lol
they should both be at 6-4 uh
I'll double check when I sit down at my desktop and post the final round later tonight
