International 'Representation' Hydra Mafia

Please note that this isn't a signup thread - it is an expression of interest thread.

The Premise

Represent your country in a game of mafia against other countries in similar hydras. If the logistics could work, I think it would be some great fun.

If there lots of people from one country, that country can have multiple teams. Lots of ways to be part of any individual country (see below).

Format 1: HYDRAS

> A game with hydras (all players can post at any time/day phase).
> Account names will be called USA, Australia, etc.
> I'd probably be looking at 2-4 people per hydra.

Format 2: TEAMS

> Team mafia (one player subs in per phase, everyone else participates in a group chat).
> I'd probably be looking at 2-4 people per team

I'd personally prefer format 1 as I think it more closely represents what I envisage - but maybe format 2 is better? Comment why.

I have inevitably written someone's name, identifying country, or both, incorrectly. Or I may have done something else similar that could be a mistake. Please PM me (discord or MU) to fix these mistakes rather than posting in this thread - this list was made primarily by the turbo crew.

What is needed from you

How do I be 'part of a country'?

Personally, I would be fine for people to be part of a country if they're any of the following:
> Speak the main language well/fluently
> Were born in that country
> Live/lived in that country
> Have other reasons to be connected to that country (eg: family, cultural connections, etc. I don't think being too strict is necessary, though there should be some connection).

If this does sound interesting, would format 1 or format 2 be more appropriate? [see poll]

I'd be more than happy for there to be a 'team leader' for certain countries, and they can organize with their fellow country people how to construct their team/s (eg if there are 5 people). Should another system of making a team be used?

Larger countries: Australia, Canada, England, Sweden could all field multiple hydras. Does that sound OK?

USA would absolutely be able to field 5+ teams. Is that OK?

How should USA be divided up? Timezones? Randed between players who want to play? States?

Would you be OK if a team is substituted with a player from another country if they can only find one player from their country (and wants to participate)?

Anything else?

Voting option 3 here, I just don't think it would be fair with the whole multiple teams thing.

A few ideas that could provide more playerbase balance to the idea. Pick and choose if you think any of them sound good.

1) Teams of hydras. Each team consisting of five two-player hydras, ten players in total per team.

2) Nerf USA by splitting it into three regions: East, West, and Midwest.

3) Consolidate the map with regional teams like Team South America, Team Central America, Team Scandinavia, Team Eastern Europe, etc.

Sounds good on 2 - I’m personally not that in tune with where a majority (if one exists) of people in the US exists, so if/when I go ahead with this - I’ll go with what you’ve suggested here (east west mid) and see how the signups fall.

For 1, the problem would be finding the people for some countries to field 10 people, there’d be a few that could though.

Based on the poll it looks like people would prefer a team rather than hydra format.

The reason I was leaning hydra was that I think it would be cool to have everyone be able to post at any time rather than potentially not get to play at all. Of course the natural criticism of larger hydras is that it gets super messy, though I think it would be fun to navigate for the “flavour” of countries here.

That being said, based on the poll currently, i’d do teams.

Current intentions are to look at organising this in the next few months at the moment, so feedback at anytime is welcome

I know the post says 2-4 people per hydra, but the idea of having like a 40 person hydra for team USA sounds amusing to me despite it being obviously a bad idea.

I wonder, what are peoples thoughts on a central account (ie, “Italy, West USA”) being used everyday, still in the teams format as requested by the masses. It would be kind of in line with what I’m going with re: “representing your country” more than simply playing on personal accounts.

To do this I could change the password each day phase on an account I made, only sharing it with the player who’s set to play…

Or, it could be done using the anonymous accounts system too (subbing out a players personal account into the “USA slot”), which probably decreases likelihood of illegal account sharing.

If I did it, I’d allow players to determine whether or not they share their identity with the thread.

It’s certainly something I’d prefer from a “flavour” perspective, as a host, but lmk if you feel differently.
