• I work as a software engineer.
• I've been playing forum mafia for a year and a half now and have completed 28 games. (30 if you count hydra games. 31 if you count hydra games where I let Nanook do all the posting because the game was too off the rails for me. 35 if you count games that ended early/no contest for one reason or another)
• I also love hosting games and have hosted 5 games of my own! (And am hosting a large game soon and would love for people to play!)

do you have any advice on being better at FM (in general)

I don't consider myself to be a particularly experienced player and still have lots of ways to improve myself. Even putting that point aside, I don't have any specific advice, but rather methodology advice:

Play more with the intention of getting better. After each loss try to figure out what went wrong - and I mean really try - don't just scapegoat onto something outside of your control. And don't just say something like "I should just have better reads" - figure out why your reads were bad, figure out what wolfy things you missed that you could have caught, figure out what things you miscleared, etc. Try to think critically as to why the game resulted in a loss and what things within your control you should have done differently. Asking the other players in the game for advice can be very insightful for this too! And make sure to do this reflection ASAP! The fresher your thoughts are in your mind when you can reflect like this, the better. And then in your next game, focus on improving in those areas.

Basically:
- Play More
- Play with the deliberate intention of improving and playing better
- Figure out what went wrong, what went right, and what you could have done better ASAP


This is really just more general advice for "how to get better at things" rather than how to get better at FM, but it's universally true. There's no silver bullet for just "being good"

Black pen - boring I know. But so many documents require only black or blue pen! Some don't even allow blue pen! And not being able to fill out paperwork sounds like it'd be a huge pain!

It entirely depends on what toppings are available. IMO thin diner-style pancakes are better if all you have are butter + syrup. But if you have a bunch of fresh fruit (and maybe a little bit of whipped cream) then waffles easily surpass pancakes.

Hmm - I really love a grilled Cuban sandwich - ham, roasted pork, swiss cheese, salami, pickle, tomato, lettuce. I don't like Mustard though, so I'd replace it with chipotle aioli.

Whiteboards.

All my comp sci classes used whiteboards, all my math classes used blackboards.

I don't like the sound of chalk on blackboards nor the texture of blackboards and they're so much of a hassle to clean with chalk dust everywhere. Whiteboards are so smooth though and the markers just glide over them - much better.

I love the rain - it's perfect for just staying inside with a hot drink, cuddling on the couch, watching tv shows, playing games, listening to the sound of thunder in the distance

What did you want to be when you were a kid?

In kindergarten as a part of the yearbook they asked every kid what they wanted to be when they grew up. Kindergarten me said I wanted to be a scientist. When I got a bit older I decided I wanted to be either a professor like my grandpa or an engineer like my parents were before they switched careers (my mom was an electrical engineer and my dad was a chemical engineer)

Hard to say!

If they just got a description of me with no chance to actually interact - they might be very sad that I didn't accomplish more academically or professionally. And they might be surprised by some other things


But if we got the chance to hang out, I'm sure we'd get along extremely well and it wouldn't take long for them to realize that the future's bright!

I've used Java and C++ in competitions so I'm very proficient in writing any sort of algorithm or single threaded command line application in them. But I've never actually done application development in either of them.

I've used Python extensively for quantitative analysis at a previous job, have used it a fair bit for more math oriented applications thanks to numpy and matplotlib, have used it for quick and dirty scripting tasks, and have made a couple of discord bots in it.

I've used Javascript a ton and it's my go-to for web frontend or backend

I've used CSS for front-end web dev a bit, but I wouldn't consider myself even close to fluent in it.

At a previous job I did application development in C# - but it's been a while, although it's similar enough to these other languages that I could probably use it tomorrow if I needed to without issue.

I also theoretically know C - but it's been a loooong time since I've used it.



But really programming languages aren't like linguistic languages - there's so much similarity between languages that once you know how to code in one language, picking up a second is much easier, and then picking up a third is even easier, and then eventually picking up a new language can be done in a trivial amount of time unless the language is different in some core way (e.g functional programming langauges) or used in a context that you're not used to (e.g coding low level C code when you've never done that before)

Having a neighborhood with Arete and Ace in Anni was also pretty great, even though Arete was a woof.

There are a lot of plays I'm proud of and it's really hard to pick just one!

What role would you really like to rand sometime and haven't managed to yet?

This isn't really a role that you can just rand, but I still think it's one of my favorite role concepts I've ever seen, designed and submitted by @Gikkle in a ?KRC game:

The Breadcrumber

The Breadcrumber can do any action imaginable that doesn’t break the game (Must ask the hosts if the action is possible or not), but they must spell it out completely using the first letter of a string of posts during the most recent day phase(they must quote the string of posts to prove they did it to the moderator). The longer the string of letters, the stronger the action can be. The action doesn't have to be an already established role. Additionally, the post with the first letter must contain one of the keywords “start” or “begin”, and the post with the last letter must contain one of the keywords “end” or “stop”. It is up to the moderator whether this can be used during both the day and the night, or just the night. It is up to the moderator to determine how many "breadcrumbs" the breadcrumber has(however they always have at least one, and they have at least two if they can only do their action during the night)

Example string of posts, where the first letter of each post makes up a sentence:

Hello everyone, lets get this started (the word "start" is said here, initiating the breadcrumb)
Everyone, tell me your top 3 scum/town
All votes on this wagon are dumb
Look at this post

Oh, I didn't see that
But you said you TRed him, when did that stop? (the word "stop" is said here, ending the breadcrumb)

All in all, the first letter of each of these posts would spell out "Heal Bob", which would heal the player named "bob" in this scenario.

I'll give two answers to the second question, since one of the answers also kind of addresses the first question

1) The post volume of games on MU is too high.

Super high post volumes make games:
- Inaccessible to people with limited amounts of free time.
- Inaccessible to people that come from sites with lower post volume metas.
- More difficult to solve as even the best players miss connections and experience information overload when faced with thousands of posts to sift through and threads with five-digit or near-five-digit post counts


Any three of those points could be viewed as the "most important" point depending on what you care about. I think lower post caps would be a good thing, although this seems to be a pretty unpopular view - hence it's my hot take lol.

It's applicable to other sites as well though, so it's more of a general mafia take.


2) MU seems to have some of the most wolf-favored setups.

I don't know if this is as much of a hot take as it is just an observation, but from what I've seen across my limited sample size of sites, MU tends to have some of the most wolf-favored setups.

I personally don't mind it though as I much prefer playing as town, and so having a wolf-favored setup is a nice consolation prize to randing wolf.

Well I live in Illinois and only visited the PNW once, so I might not have a super nuanced opinion on the topic!
But the large number of tech jobs there is nice! I also really love evergreen trees! I drove there the one time I visited and driving into the Seattle area through those evergreen forests was so pretty and scenic!

I have my grey hoodie that I got as a gift freshman year of university 8 years ago that I still wear around the house on an daily basis.

I have my mug that I also got as a gift freshman year of uni that I still use on a regular basis for coffee and tea. The mug is really neat it has all sorts of famous math and physics equations printed on the outside like euler's identity, the reimann zeta function, fourier transformation, actually, here's a link to the mug - apparently they still make them!

And I have my little stuffed dog that I've had since I was probably seven or eight? Though he lives on my desk now so that he doesn't get torn apart by our non-stuffed dogs!
