An international forum-based tournament for Mafia players from 135 different communities
WHAT IS THE MAFIA CHAMPIONSHIP?
The Mafia Championship is an annual forum-based tournament that pits representatives from various online Mafia (aka Werewolf) communities against one another as they compete to determine the Internet’s greatest Mafia player. Each participating community democratically elects one person to represent them and play on their behalf.
If you're a passerby who doesn't know what Mafia is, we have an explanation on our landing page.
Besides being a fun, competitive event that allows players to showcase their skills and unique playstyles whilst being cheered on by their home communities, the main purpose of the Mafia Championship is to create closer bonds between communities and players.
As of Season 9, 990+ representatives have played in the Mafia Championship, representing 370+ different communities and 50+ different nationalities.
Are you ready for yet another exciting season?
SEASON 10 TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE
135 communities will participate, each sending one representative.
QUALIFIERS: 9 Qualifier Games will be played, consisting of 15 players each. I.e. every representative plays in one Qualifier Game. The players themselves vote post-game to determine who is deserving of advancement. 1st and 2nd place will advance to the Semifinal Games.
SEMIFINALS: A Jury consisting of finalists from Season 9 will select 27 additional players to advance to the three Semifinal Games. From each game, five players will advance to the Finale Game based on a post-game player vote, just like in the qualifying phase.
THE FINALE: The Finale Game is played. Once it has been completed, the players vote to determine who shall receive the title of Season 10 Champion and a winner’s certificate signed by Dmitry Davidoff, the creator of mafia.
This means any representative could play anywhere between 1 to 3 games.
The qualifier games will be played with the Adapt 6 setup (see the Season 10 Qualifier Setup tab for more details) and the semifinal/finale games will be played using a different setup. The semifinal/finale setup will be a low-powered 15-player setup, with full details to be disclosed when the jury's semifinal advances are revealed.
TIMELINE:
The Qualifier Games will have start dates ranging from the end of April to mid June. Exact dates to follow.
The Semifinal Games will be played in July and August.
The Finale Game will be played in August or September.
VOTING PROMPT
After each game ends, the players will cast their votes based on this voting prompt:
VOTING TIME
All players that participated in this game must vote for who you think is the best all-around mafia player, based on what you've seen from each player in this game (excluding any previous perceptions of each player's skill).
THIS IS NOT AN MVP VOTE, nor is it a vote for the player who had the most positive impact on the game (otherwise the people who died early would rarely be in contention). Instead, you should vote based off who you think displayed the most overall skill as either alignment. This criteria is subject to your own opinions on mafia and the game. If you are looking for examples, here are a few optional points to consider which may help with your decision:
What skills do you consider to be important to have as a good mafia player, for both alignments?
Whose play from this game would you recommend to others as examples of good play?
Are there any players who did not get much time to shine, but you believe still played well?
Which players would you be interested in playing with again, based on their play in this game?
You are giving a RANKED TOP 4.
The names should be ordered from first to last. The first player will receive 5 points, the second player will receive 4 points, the third player will receive 3 points, and the fourth player will receive 2 points. You may not include yourself in your votes.
THE JURY
The jury consists of the finalists from Season 9:
The jury will also be basing their decision on the above voting prompt. It is up to them whether they wish to specify their advancement criteria either pre-season or post-season - they are under no obligation to do so.

Town Role
Description
Vanilla Town
The Vanilla Townie has no special powers or night actions. Their only power is their vote and voice during discussions.
Town Doctor (Odd Night or 2-shot)
The Town Doctor (either Odd Night or 2-shot) may use the Protection ability on nights when their role is active, which will protect the target from death for that night. This role cannot self-target, and will not explicitly learn whether or not they successfully protected someone. If 2-shot, then this role is Non-consecutive, meaning it cannot target the same player two nights in a row.
Town Jack of All Trades
The Town Jack of All Trades, also known as Town JOAT, may use each of the following night abilities once throughout the game: Doctor, Roleblock and Motion Detect. This role may not use multiple abilities on the same night.
Doctor will protect the target from death for that night. The Town JOAT cannot self-target with this action, and will not explicitly learn whether or not they successfully protected someone.
Roleblock will prevent the target from using their night action. Players will not be informed that they were roleblocked. See "Roleblock & Jailkeep Mechanics" below for further info.
Motion Detect will detect motion if the target has either visited someone, or has been visited by someone else. All night actions can be detected, including Mafia's factional kill.
Town Even Night Jailkeeper
The Town Even Night Jailkeeper may use the Jailkeeping ability on even numbered nights (night 2, 4, 6, etc), protecting the target from death and prevent the target from using their night action. This role cannot self-target, and will not explicitly learn whether or not they successfully protected someone. Players will not be informed that they were jailkept. See "Roleblock & Jailkeep Mechanics" below for further info.
Town 2-shot Roleblocker
TheTown 2-shot Roleblockermay use the Roleblock ability on two different nights. This will prevent the target from using their night action. This role is Non-consecutive, meaning it cannot target the same player two nights in a row. Players will not be informed that they were roleblocked. See "Roleblock & Jailkeep Mechanics" below for further info.
Town Odd Night Tracker
The Town Odd Night Tracker may use the Tracking ability on odd numbered nights (night 1, 3, 5, etc). This informs them who their target visited on that night, if anyone. The Tracker will not learn what type of night action(s) their target used, only who their target visited.
If a player who is using multiple night actions on different targets is tracked, the player will be seen visiting all of their targets.
If a player using multiple actions on the same target is tracked, they would only be seen visiting the target once.
All night actions can be tracked, including the Mafia's factional kill.
Town Even Night Vanilla Cop
The Town Even Night Vanilla Cop may use the Vanilla Inspection ability on even numbered nights (night 2, 4, 6, etc). This informs them whether or not their target is Vanilla or not, i.e. whether or not they have powers or modifiers. This means that Vanilla Townies and Mafia Goons will appear as "Vanilla", whereas any other roles will appear as "Not Vanilla".
Mafia Role
Description
Mafia Goon
The Mafia Goon, or Vanilla Mafia, is a standard mafia-aligned player with no abilities other than carrying out the factional kill.
Mafia Jack of All Trades
The Mafia Jack of All Trades, also known as Mafia JOAT, may use each of the following night abilities once throughout the game: Role Cop and Roleblock. This role may not use multiple abilities on the same night.
Role Cop will reveal the target's role and any role modifiers.
Roleblock will prevent the target from using their night action. Players will not be informed that they were roleblocked. See "Roleblock & Jailkeep Mechanics" below for further info.
Mafia 1-shot Jailkeeper
The Mafia 1-shot Jailkeeper may use the Jailkeeping ability on one night. This will protect the target from death and prevent the target from using their night action. This role cannot self-target, and will not explicitly learn whether or not they successfully protected someone. Players will not be informed that they were jailkept. See "Roleblock & Jailkeep Mechanics" for further info.
Mafia Roleblocker (may be 1-shot)
The Mafia Roleblocker (may be 1-shot) may use the Roleblock ability each night, which prevents the target from using their night action. This role is Non-consecutive, meaning it cannot target the same player two nights in a row. Players will not be informed that they were roleblocked. See "Roleblock & Jailkeep Mechanics" below for further info.
Mafia 1-shot Tracker
The Mafia Tracker may use the Tracking ability on one night. This informs them who their target visited on that night, if anyone. The Tracker will not learn what type of night action(s) their target used, only who their target visited. All night actions can be tracked.
Mafia 2-shot Watcher
The Mafia 2-shot Watcher may use the Watch ability on two different nights. This informs them who visited their target on that night, if anyone. If multiple people visit the target, the Watcher will receive multiple names. The Watcher will not learn what type of night action was used on their target, only who visited their target. All night actions can be watched.
Players will not be informed that they were roleblocked or jailkept.
If an X-shot role or Jack of All Trades role is roleblocked or jailkept while they are using one of their abilities, they will lose that ability shot forever.
If 2+ of the same blocking roles (e.g. only Roleblockers or only Jailkeepers) target eachother on the same night, they can all be tracked and watched in this scenario, and should one of them also be carrying out the factional kill in this scenario, the factional kill will be prevented. These same rules also apply to longer loops, e.g. A -> B -> C -> A.
If players with Roleblock and Jailkeep abilities target eachother on the same night, roleblock actions will go through whereas the jailkeep actions will not.
If an attempted investigative ability (i.e. Track, Watch, Motion Detect, Role Cop or Vanilla Inspection) has been roleblocked or jailkept, the following feedback will be given: "Your action on Player X failed”. Note that this is different to a negative (e.g. no visit) result.
If a player has been roleblocked or jailkept, then they cannot be seen by Tracker, Watcher or Motion Detector.
Relevant mechanics info
- Day start.
- Majority elimination will not be enabled during day 1 and is not required at any point for the elimination. Starting on Day 2 and until LYLO, majority will be enabled at 12 hours after SoD (in 36/12s and 48/24s) OR at 24 hours after SoD (in 72/24s). LYLOs are an exception to the majority delay, during which majority will be enabled immediately.
- Tied votes will result in a player being eliminated at random from among the tied players.
- No outside communication. I.e. you may not contact the other players outside of the thread (unless you are Mafia and wish to speak with your teammates).
- Phase Lengths and Deadlines will be up to the players themselves (I’ll organize your representative into a game with deadlines that suit their preferences).
- Thread is locked during Night Phases.
- Votes are automatically locked in at LYLO.
- Mafia share a factional Night Kill, which is a single standard shot for their faction. The mafia faction kill is mandatory.
- Mafia may communicate at any time.
- Each individual player may make a maximum of 125 posts per day phase (this restriction is lifted 1 hour before day end).
- The game will have a host to oversee everything and make sure everyone’s following the code of conduct, but otherwise the game is completely automated (automatic votecounts, thread locks and reveals alignments automatically, the bot receives and processes actions, etc.).

HOW IT ALL STARTED
The Mafia Championship was founded on the American poker forum Two Plus Two in 2013 by Thingyman. Originally, it was just meant to be a single game consisting of elite players from about a dozen different communities. But that one game quickly grew into a full-blown season featuring 45+ communities and 100+ representatives. Now here we are, ready for season 10.
Over the years, many changes were made. The social aspect began to be weighted more heavily, and the size of the tournament evolved each season, most recently hitting 150 participating communities in Season 8. At the end of season 2 the tournament was also moved to Mafia Universe, a site that was created by Thingyman and Makaze specifically with the purpose of being a neutral meeting ground for the general online mafia community.

DISCLAIMER ALERT
The beauty of the Mafia Championship is that it brings communities closer together, and it provides an opportunity for players to learn new playstyles, metas and mechanics. And hopefully make new friends as well.
All that being said, the games can also very quickly become overwhelming and frustrating since you probably won't be able to play completely in the same way that you're used to. You don't necessarily need to adapt, but you will probably need to accept that some of the other players will have a different approach to the game than you.
We hope that you will embrace this as part of the experience. It's easy to grow frustrated with people when you don't know them (imagine how you would have felt playing with your friends on your home site if you didn't know any of them when you played your first game together), so a huge part of playing in the Championship is also getting to know the other players in some way.
Specifically, the seasons have taught us that you should be prepared for:
A very high level of activity. On average, there will be 600-700 posts per 24 hours during the early stages of the game in qualifier games, and likely more in semifinal/finale games. This is a melting pot of dedicated and enthusiastic players all gathered in one game.
You will likely face very different posting styles: Some will post walls of texts with many quotes, some will post a ton of one-liners, and some people will be very keen to interact in real-time in the thread (using the thread as a chat rather than a thread you pop into a few times a day).
A flurry of activity towards the end of the day. This means that if you check out 5 hours before the day ends, you should not be surprised to return the next day to see that the wagons were changed multiple times. If you want your vote to count, be careful to not agree to a game where you can never be around for EOD.
A few players in your game will probably have played with each other before. This has become impossible to prevent as increasingly many players have played on Mafia Universe/multiple communities.
We do not condone abusive remarks and we have banned several communities from participating based on this before, but each season features dozens of new communities, so there is always a slight risk that you might encounter abusive players. If you do, please report them and we'll take care of it.
Past seasons have shown that players get more enjoyment out of the games when they make connections with the other players, so we highly encourage you to join our Discord server either before or after the game.
While Mafia Universe runs on vBulletin, we have many custom-made features that you may not have seen anywhere else. Read this guide to learn about them.

WHAT THE $%#! DOES "WTF" MEAN?
Are you not familiar with some of the terminology used by the other players? Maybe this will help you: TERMINOLOGY EXPLANATIONS.
MAFIA GAME RULES
Rules may vary from community to community, so we highly advise you to carefully read these rules.
Only post/talk about the game in this thread. Don't PM other players, unless you are mafia and wish to talk with your teammates. Also, don't post anything about the game in other threads or on other forums.
Don't try to use the form of your role PM. So a screenshot of your role PM would be cheating.
You are not allowed to change your avatar, location or any other profile info during game in any way that could be construed as hinting at your role.
This is a game of lying. Players are expected to lie. No statement or promise a player makes within the game has any force outside the game. As an example, a bet offered in a game is not something you can collect if you win.
If we believe you to be bending the rules intentionally in a way that clearly goes against the spirit of the rules, game, and/or championship, then that would also be grounds for modkill and potential disqualification.
If you have any questions about rules, send a PM to your host. Avoid asking questions to the host in the thread.
Don't ever refer to private communications with the Game Host.
If you should ever require a replacement, PM Lissa and stop posting in the thread.
No hydra'ing / multi-accounting is allowed. Do not share your account with anyone else.
You are not allowed to reference the post-game voting during the game. I.e. you cannot post "if you lynch me, you're not getting my vote after the game" or anything like that. Attempts to weaponize post-game voting may result in disqualification.
Treat your fellow players with respect. Hostility will not be tolerated.
Refer to this post for the complete, standard ruleset for mafia games.
I will repeat this particular rule once more in big letters to make sure you understand:
DO NOT EVER REFERENCE THIS GAME OUTSIDE OF THIS GAME THREAD. YOU SHOULD NOT BE TALKING ABOUT THIS GAME WHATSOEVER ON YOUR HOME SITE. IF PEOPLE ASK YOU QUESTIONS, TELL THEM YOU CAN'T TALK ABOUT THE GAME AND LINK THEM TO THIS THREAD.
MINIMUM ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS
All players are required to make a minimum of 10 posts per game day.
Activity prods will be conducted based on the phase length of the game as follows:
If a player has made 0 posts by 6 hours into a day, they will be prodded in private.
If a player has made less than 10 posts by 2 hours before EoD, they will be prodded in private. This is in addition to the mid-day prod if the player is a 0-poster.
If a player has made less than 10 posts by 24 hours into a day, they will be prodded in private.
If a player has made less than 10 posts by 2 hours before EoD, they will be prodded in private again.
If a player has made 0 posts by 24 hours into a day, they will be prodded in private.
If a player has made less than 10 posts by 48 hours into a day, they will be prodded in private. This is in addition to the mid-day prod if the player is a 0-poster.
If a player has made less than 10 posts by 6 hours before EoD, they will be prodded in private again. This is in addition to the previous prod(s).
If a player has posted 0 times by EoD on any given day without maj, once night begins they will be subbed out as soon as possible.
If a player makes 1-9 posts during a day without maj, they have the full night to respond to the warning. If they do not respond to the warning in time, they will be subbed out.
If a player makes 1-9 posts a second time on any future day without maj, they will be subbed out.
These rules apply to all players regardless of alignment.
The game hosts and tournament organizers reserve all rights to immediately sub out any player who has not met the minimum requirement, regardless of whether or not the player has met the requirement on previous days. Similarly, if players are only meeting this requirement by spamming and/or posting in the last hour of the day, that and similar circumstances would also be cause for substitution.
SUBSTITUTION PROCEDURE
If your representative needs to sub out during a QUALIFIER (through request, inactivity, or otherwise), your community's backup will take their place, This is assuming 1) you've elected one, 2) they've registered a user on Mafia Universe, and 3) that I'm able to get a hold of them within a reasonable amount of time (i.e. with enough time left in the current phase for the sub to work with).
If I can't get a hold of your backup, I will give the spot to a representative from a community that joined the series late - or failing that, a backup from one of the larger communities.
If your representative needs to sub out during a SEMIFINAL or FINALE game, your community's backup will NOT take their place. Instead the next person who was in line to receive a semifinal or finale spot will take their place.
Can I suggest a community where you can send an invite? I don't know if this community is already in your list or not but I thought I will share this anyway....
Pretend I said that on here. I don’t usually use google on my iPad and I happened to see it while on here and then didn’t realise I was logged into that hydra account.
Willing to do flavour for either one qualifier or one Semifinal round. Please ping me via discord when the schedules are about to be set so that I can see which times will work and which times won't.
Generally stuff should be okay starting early June though.
