    Andreya Triana - "Lullaby"

I feel like I should like this more, but it's not quite clicking with me on first listen. I can hear the interpretation of this as a closer, but the catfit doesn't feel that strong. I do like her voice and the general texture of this song, but it’s a bit too upbeat and positive in like...I don't know how to describe it, but it feels more like the moment in a movie where someone realizes they really love someone and need to do something to let them know/win them back or whatever. Or like when they have that epiphany needed to get to the next step in their life. So like, kinda climactic, but not quite a closer. I wanted to sanity check myself by seeing what track number this is on the album, and the actual album closer would have ranked much higher for me

Kamehameha Schools Children's Chorus and Mark Kealiʻi Hoʻomalu - "Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride"

This is pretty uplifting, but this is also one of two Disney subs that I have less context for. I never ended up watching Lilo & Stitch, though not for a lack of wanting. So, I think some of the emotional impact of the song is lost on me, even with the video provided. It does work as a happy resolution track for sure, and it's pleasant in the least. This might be a bit robbed, especially for fans of the movie, but I was honestly just more into what came above it.

Killerband451 - "Turning Red vs. Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (Full mashup)"

I have not seen Turning Red, so the meme is lost on me, buuuuuut this is a pretty cool tune. Lacking a bit of catfit because(probably thanks to Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) it somewhat has opening vibes to me? But I'm guessing the song is from the credits of Turning Red, and I can definitely hear the ending credit vibes. Plus, it’s just a really cool sound that speaks to me, meme or not.

AJJ - "A Big Day for Grimley"

I like some AJJ stuff I’ve heard before, but nothing that ever really stuck with me other than “Smokin’”. Solid, decent catfit, not much more than that. The very end is cool though. I can't hear this without thinking about "A Stone" tbh. It has a pretty similar chord progression and vocal shape.

    Alvine - "ミゼレレ・メイ / Miserere Mei"

This is a cool track that's definitely got some cosmic final boss vibes. Great space. Kinda wish it had more push though. Like I really want to rank this higher, but I feel like it's really missing one last higher gear to shift into.

    CL - "Lover Like Me"

This one had to grow on me a bit, and I think a big part of that is how much I enjoy the rap part. Definitely has "fallout of a deep relationship" vibes. I wish it had a bit more conclusive power though. Not sure what I mean by that, but yeah. Still, this is a good track that gets stuck in my head every now and then.

Trophy Scars - "Time in Heaven, Forever in Hell"

Definitely a big catfit. Love the hybrid of instruments. The piano hits so strong for me. It’s not exactly my taste, but the overall vibe and structure of the song has me overlooking that. If there was a weakness for me in this track, its the vocals, but it's minimal. I do appreciate the more gruff vocals some. And I feel bad because this sub is almost a dead ringer instrumentally for one of my samples. But it just doesn't pull me past a certain ceiling no matter how much I try.

Jim Nopédie - "eventually is eventually"

This is a good dreamscape-y track. I like the simple structure and the way it wanes out at the end. Also feels like a good follow-up to the last Nopédie track(assuming this was sent by the same person). Very good music to end your day to as you drift off to sleep.

Public Service Broadcasting - "Mother of the Village"

Really dig the vibe here. Cool textures and instrumentation. Very strong catfit. Only thing holding this down is I kinda wish this either went longer or developed a bit more, but I really like it otherwise. This also could have been a good sub for Cat 7, but that has nothing to do with the score I gave it.

    Lorna Shore - "Flesh Coffin"

My girlfriend has been really into Lorna Shore lately. And I gotta say I like the new generation of deathcore more than what it used to be. It has big “final battle that ends tragically” vibes. Not my favorite track through the whole thing but it really sticks the landing. The last breakdown takes me out tbh and does so the more I listen. It's a little too much like the deathcore I hate. A shame because I think the rest of this song is sick

This is a pretty powerful track with a strong climax that really sells this for me. Strong catfit, heavy vibes, powerful ending. Yeah, this earned its place in the Top 10.

    Son Lux - "Resurrection"

Man, I really like the haunting atmosphere here. The production on this track is unreal. And somehow it really does capture a fitting image of what a resurrection feels like from the other side. I also love how ambiguous is the mood established.

Iron Maiden - "Rime of the Ancient Mariner"

This just as easily could have been one of my sample tracks. Legit one of my favorite closers of all-time, and one of my Top 3 Iron Maiden tracks. If I wanted to be a $%#!, I could dock you for picking something I'm so damn familiar with. But it's probably been at least 10 years since I've listened to it, so I'm gonna embrace the nostalgia. I love how progressive this track is. The "underwater" part in the middle is so entrancing. The whole middle passage in general is great.

    KEN mode - "Dead Actors"

Another strong catfit. I really like how downtrodden this song is. This is like some pre-sewer slide vibes. The use of harmonics in the main riff is great. The energy push in the second half amps up the climactic effect. Just a great structure all around.

The Drones - "The Grey Leader"

Strong ending for a strong set of subs, with a strong catfit. Gareth Liddiard really is great at building a track and making an impactful ending. This is greatness. Really like the middle portion of this track and how it builds into the ending. Mm. The chord change around 2:20? $%#!'s tasty.

    Mastodon - "Jaguar God"

It's been a long time since I've listened to a full Mastodon album that wasn’t Remission or Blood Mountain, but this is a great closer. Really into the way this develops. I wasn't completely into the first part of the song, but it picks up. I love the journey here and how it gets more intense over time.

And FUUUUCK the solo over the return of the main riff at the end? Chills.

Ulcerate - "The Destroyers of All"

Yes. I love this. Ulcerate is a sick band that’s great at making a crushing atmosphere. This song is not different. I can literally feel the weight of these guitars flattening me. The drums are punishing. And I’m completely enamored with the higher pitched chords. Always love when bands make un-guitar-like sounds with their guitar, and always gets me figuring out how they made that sound. This is an apocalyptic wasteland with no hope to be found, and I’m all here for it.

This $%#!'s wild. I wasn't even sure if an actual beat would come in, but damn does it hit when it does. I literally just find myself in awe when I listen to it. It’s way too awesome. Have definitely listened to this many times of my own leisure both during and after me ranking the Walrus.

Aeternam - "The Fall of Constantinople"

A lot of metal and symphonics in this Walrus, I see. This not a complaint.

I love how big this is. It’s big time catfit. The melodics are wonderful. It’s such a $%#!ing ride. With each listen it just gets more amazing. The ending is pure perfection. I struggled to find a winner between all four of these top tracks, but this one was in a bitter battle with #1 to assert dominance, and I literally went back and forth each time. Could probably catch me on a different month and I would consider this the winner. Just like the last two and the winner, this has become a regular spin for me.

    Swampborn - “Transitions"

Oh $%#!, what a cool intro that sets up a good closer, and then the EXPLOSION. Holy $%#!, this is awesome. The horns are such a great touch. I especially dig that they're not just some war horns like you'd normally hear in blackened metal. What a $%#!ing outro, too. There's something a little extra special about this track because the riff that keeps coming back that first shows up at 1:29 is the same chord progression used for one of my favorite jazz tunes of all time (Tokyo Blues by Horace Silver), which I actually recorded a metal cover of. So it hits this super niche and personal note that's cool to hear recreated in a proper original metal track. Thank you for this.

Congratulations to Shad for being the first winner of one of my Walruses! And thanks to everyone that subbed. Even if you didn't win or score high, I absolutely loved so much of what you sent me. I hope you'll be back for my next one, and hopefully we can get a few more in on it. Until next year!
