Das Racist - "Rainbow in the Dark"

I've only heard this song like twice before, and because of that I thought it might have been Das Racist doing a Dio cover which would have been wild. I absolutely love this beat though, and it's amazing how Heems and AD have such clever flows and wordplay while talking about some of the most inane $%#!. I love it.

Let me reiterate. HOLY $%#!, this beat is too good, and the $%#!ing BARS. This $%#! is also nostalgic for me because it brings me back to when I was first getting into modern underground hip-hop in the early 2010’s. This was originally a bit lower, but I just fell in love with this even more with each listen and it’s not even a competition with anything other than Esperanza Spalding.

    6) The Experiment

Now that you've been committed enough to the album to stick it out to track 6, the band gets more bold to try something a little different. A brutal metal band throws out a jazz odyssey, or a hip-hop producer pushes the limits of what can be considered a rappable beat. It's all about flexing that versatility or pushing the boundaries of music.

This one doesn't have an "album flow" as strong as others, moreso just send me something at least a little off-kilter or atypical. Cookies if you interpret this with an example of a band's experimenting with a sound atypical to them.

    EXAMPLES:

Company Flow - "The Fire in Which You Burn" (https://youtu.be/hDdTDksU2Gg)
    Meshuggah - "Acrid Placidity" (https://youtu.be/QIfFDoNmkQw)
    Devin Townsend - "Ants" (https://youtu.be/j9a5uDh8uO0)
The Residents - "The Ultimate Disaster" (https://youtu.be/JsGs_KmabvI)

Goo Goo Dolls - "I'm Still Here"

Oof, first big whiff from Taffy. Hitting all the weak points. Not at all a catfit, a movie I don't have nostalgia for, and a song by the Goo Goo Dolls, whom I despise.

Knowing who sent this now, I’m guessing maybe you were going for something that sounded different from the rest of your subs in album context? But even then, almost all of the subs are different, so yeah. I’m sorry but this just ain’t it for me.

Doeball - “Steamed Hams but its the vocals and instrumentals of Revenge”

I live for Steamed Hams memes, but this is way more of a joke than "experimental" to me. I think this would have been better subbed to the previous cat.

Dillinger Escape Plan - "Come To Daddy"

I love this cover. Was actually one of the first Dillinger songs I ever heard. Shout out to Mike Patton. I naturally have to wonder if this was intended for the last cat, where it probably would have fared better. This is a really clever cover, though, and it does a lot to take this out of the normal realm of either Dillinger or Aphex Twin. Good catfit. The drums are just going ham here. I do feel like the guitar line feels a bit dull for the first three notes before the scramsy flourishes. But strangely enough, this song benefits from being played on external speakers(my laptop speakers to be specific), because the guitar tone doesn't feel nearly as dull as when I was listening with headphones. The final listen gave it a nice boost. I may have given it higher if I wasn't so familiar with the track.

Monkey Majik + 吉田兄弟 - "Change"

This is another one that's kind of just barely hitting the catfit with the Shamisen, but it is a very catchy and groovy song. Very catchy and groovy, but I do feel like it's kind of just barely meeting the catfit. But that groove is undeniable, and I could see myself popping this on every now and then.

    NMIXX - "DICE"

We're back to the KPop Bops! I wasn't too into the last two subs, but this one picks it back up. The stark switch-up does a lot for me to feel like this is more of what I was looking for with this cat. Enough that I'm willing to overlook the lack of catfit in favor of how much I just enjoy this song. On repeated listens, I honestly like the switch-up more than the rest of the song. Actually, it's only really the hook that doesn't grab me as much. The rest is good.

I also appreciate that this track doesn't really repeat. Which is pretty wild for a pop song. Like the hook is the only part that really repeats, and not only do I appreciate that move musically, I think it adds more weight to the catfit.

Gareth Liddiard - "The Radicalisation of D"

Oh $%#!, it's a new Gareth Liddiard project! Here I was prepared for more Tropical $%#! Storm and The Drones, and my dude has a solo project as well! I like the stripped down sound. Honestly, this seems pretty tame compared to everything else I've heard from Gareth Liddiard. Like I might have maybe considered the stripped down aspect fluctuating between two chords as at least atypical, but having had a whole crash course on the dude's style this walrus, this kind of goes against what I was looking for in this cat. Not only is it not atypical for the artist, but it's also probably the tamest/least adventurous song from someone who usually goes outside the box. I could maybe give this more of a rub for being such a long song focused on two chords, and I do really like the energy flow here and it's still a strong track.

With each listen, I got more over the "this is tame in comparison" take, because I think the general focus on crafting a very specific space for each song is something that is experimental in practice and seems to kind of underline most of Liddiard's work, so I'm not gonna say this isn't a catfit. Not my favorite sub from this set but one that grows on me more and more.

    Le Loup - "(Storm)"

Not me getting giddy from the glitchy

I wish this went on longer honestly. For as short as it is, I wish there were more musical aspects, or otherwise left me in this space longer. It's hard to appreciate it as just a brief piece of glitchy ambience.

    Darko US - "Gantz"

Some good ol' tech metal will do the trick. Overall this is a cool track. I know synth in a metal track is nothing new, and especially with something that's deathcore/djent adjacent, but there's something about the specific pieces put together here that makes it feel more unusual. We support chaos chords here

I think I like the first half more than the second half, though.

VOCALOUD x XIII SESSIONS - "MUSIC WALKER"

Intro gives me 3D Sonic OST vibes. The blend of styles lends itself to the cat, but this isn't feeling too off-kilter/experimental through the whole thing. It's mostly the two different vocal styles. I'm hesitant to call this experimental because of technical bass licks, but really, this is a lot of pieces that don't normally go together, and I have to give credit for that. Even if some parts like the hook sound fairly normal in a vacuum. This is really fun, though, and it has this unhinged quality that I love.

    Ulver - "Lost in Moments"

That beat against the horn? I love the way this keeps transforming throughout, and the "aggressive chillhop" vibes. The ending is strong. I really like it.

That all said, I kinda feel like this would have been better for Cat 4? I do really like this and the various little sections that happen in it. I feel if this were a different cat I would easily rank it higher, but as it is here, it comes just short of the Top 10 spotlight.

Getachew Mekuria and the Ex - "Musicawi Silt"

I love the way this starts with a 4/4 groove and immediately the main groove kicks in as 3/4 and it gives this like sampled quality where it feels like the riff just keeps restarting before it can finish. I'm also not sure if the guitar is still playing the opening riff as if it's 4/4 while everything else is going by 3/4, but it's a cool effect regardless.

This is arguably not experimental enough, but I think the blend of sounds and the atypical form makes this qualify for how much I enjoy it.

Sunday Driver - "For a Few Regrets More"

Already feeling the catfit out of the gate. I always want to be careful about hearing music with a non-western influence and screaming, "Experimental," but the blend of sounds really does a lot to make this feel atypical, even with the more traditional elements that make up the whole. Yeah I'm just giving out to this and loving the space it creates. The mood shift is a nice touch. I also think the vocals are wonderfully haunting and beautiful. Definitely gets the off-kilter stamp of approval

I like the synth going into the heavy. Overall, a really enjoyable track set to an AMV of one of the best modern anime. I'm...not getting major experimental vibes from this though? The combination of djent rhythms/drums and the synth and cleaner pop-like vocals and then the black metal shrieks with lo-fi production...I definitely like it even if it's not quite experimental

You nailed the off-kilter part. I love the way the lead vocal hits some unexpected notes because of the odd harmony going on here. I like the soft kick doing the constant rhythm in the background.

Yeah this is mesmerizing to get lost to, and even though it's a bit static, the vocal climax near the end hits so strong.

Lil Yachty - "the BLACK seminole"

Subbing me Lil Yachty is about the boldest move you could make. And you know what? It paid off because this is an EXACT catfit. It's the only time I've ever heard a Yachty song I like, it's completely experimental specifically for him, and is even just generally experimental. The auto tune still kind of grates on me, but this is a big winner.

Damn it, why is this so good? Like even the auto tune is softening on me. This is legit lil Yachty doing a prog rock song. And Holy King Crimson is that climax and ending awesome!

100 gecs - “Billy knows jamie”

This is how you take the nu metal aesthetic and make art out of it. I don't expect the latter half of this track and it does a lot to elevate this really high on my list. For real, this whole thing goes hard, and when that second part hits it's like a car crash shutting down your brain. Excellent sub with an exact catfit, would love more of this.

    Maximum the Hormone - "A-L-I-E-N"

I really appreciate how much Maximum The Hormone can seamlessly transition between sounds and styles. Big catfit for that alone. I love the frenetic pace of the first half. And then the ending feels like such a different space then everything before it, but the transition is so smooth that it fits. It gets me singing. Something that I think really grabs me as a catfit is that this is one of the heaviest MTH songs I've heard for the first half, and then one of the softest at the end, and it's just a big yeah from me.

I love this huge but calmly ominous sound. The blend of ambient noise and distortion with the airy vocal melody creates such a cool texture. I don't know how poetic I can get with this, I just love the sound and it's a big catfit for me. With every listen, even more "holy $%#! this is awesome" goes through my mind. And man, the way this disintegrates towards the end is awesome.

Yup, this is just an awesome package. A narrative structure, multiple vocals and vocal timbres, not quite black metal, not quite death metal, not quite opera, but a little bit of all to make it something more awesome and just kind of awe-inspiring. It’s literally everywhere and it’s great. I love the way the operatic vocals clash against the rest. Just more more more please.

    7) The Instrumental

After blazing through a lineup of tracks that cover various lyrical topics, the band takes a moment to show off their instrumental skills with no distractions. Sometimes these are breaks in the action, while other times it's the last destination before the final track climaxes the whole package.

Send me a track that's instrumental. Vocals aren't banned, but they shouldn't have a lyrical or spoken-focus if you're including them. Hip-hop/electronic instrumentals with vocal samples are acceptable.

    EXAMPLES:
Herbie Hancock - "Maiden Voyage" (https://youtu.be/hwmRQ0PBtXU)
    King Geedorah - "One Smart N*****" (https://youtu.be/wY0W7vpcfhk)
    Nile - "Ruins" (https://youtu.be/-KfhfgKUjC4)

Honestly, I like the swapping between a more techno pop sound and the guitar heavy parts. It really peaks with the last couple minutes, love the way it builds into the same part yet feeling bigger. I could tell without paying attention to the title that this is missing vocals, though, and it takes away from it a tiny bit, but mostly in the first half.

    Powderfinger - "Namaste"

I like this a lot more than the last Powderfinger song I got. Maybe it's because there are no vocals lol. But I do like the general vibe of this sound more than the other song. That said, it doesn't do a lot for me overall, feels like it ends a bit quickly, but I like the mood it sets

True story, I know the song being covered only because I recognized it from one of my favorite Skull Trumpet memes. Even though I’m pretty sure this is created from sampled pitches, it's still impressive.

Really like the dramatic sweeps here. As much as I like this, I wish it built into more. It hits a peak then resets and goes back to the same peak. I would like this to develop into something bigger.

I don't know, I appreciate the general texture here and like how atypical it feels, but it's not exactly doing a lot for me? I do really like the drums here. Very active underneath a more relaxed texture. And all the little cymbal flourishes tickle me. I don't know if there's a difference between the album and music video versions of these tracks, but when listening to the former it suddenly hit harder for me?

I like the little tag/looped ending too.

My first reaction was “$%#! YES”, immediately followed up by, “ugh, I wish this was longer and I could hear whatever the ending builds into.” It makes a really cool space and having checked out some of the album, it works well as a good transition track. But on its own, I expect this to go further and it ends too soon. Hurts this a lot for me.

Damn I love this texture. I just wanna know who Mr. East is and is it him or mom that's dying? I feel like this would have been a good cat 6 sub, but to be clear I'm not docking any points for that. Just that it could have worked for either.

I really like the space this carves out. Really cool sounds and textures. I get major samurai flick OST vibes. Not sure if intentional, but I like how the melody at the end is reminiscent of "On My Own." Feels like it brings the whole sub list together. That said, I’m still wishing there was a bit more energy from these subs and this doesn’t do a lot to remedy that.

Animals as Leaders - "The Brain Dance"

I never did do the deep dive on Animals as Leaders when I first heard them back when they were getting popular, so I appreciate this sub. Again, I would have liked this to push into a more active/driving territory. Still, this is a very vibey track that has a really cool climax.

This $%#! is wild. I love the folk instruments peppered throughout. I also like the various different sections. It comes off kind of progressive. It’s so heavy while just painting a smile on my face. I do feel like some of the transitions aren't as smooth as they could be. But man, this is just fun and GLORIOUS.

There's something about this space that I just click with. $%#! makes me want to go on a cross country cruise with no set destination and find myself crossing state lines. It’s also got the vibes of like walking through a dimly lit alley in the city. Just such good vibes and I’m just here bobbing my head and falling into it.

This is a cool $%#! sound. This song would have thrived in the last cat. Thankfully, it's thriving here, too. The little muffled voice samples are entrancing. Only thing is I wish it was longer.

Via Luna - "No One Cares"

There will probably be someone wondering how this ended up ranking so much higher than the Animals as Leaders track. Especially since a lot of my problems with this cat is the lack of energy. But I think this comes off as less noodly, which gives it more purpose. And beyond that, I think it has a lot more of the drive and energy I was hoping for in this cat. The climax near the end is breathtaking, and feels like the proper release of all the built up energy throughout.

An Endless Sporadic - "Eternal Bloom"

This is a refreshing sounding track. Also has a really cool bass timbre throughout. Oh man, the part where the groove comes in? Was not expecting that. I was prepared to like this with a level of disappointment because it would be another low-key vibey track, but this is way more than I was expecting, and I'm so into it. Parts of the intro remind me of some PS1 jrpgs, too. Like some Chrono Cross vibes.

I love the mood established here, and I like the shifts between sections. Feels like it properly builds into something more powerful. I love how much this sounds like trying to listen to a radio station that you're just out of range to hear without static. And that ending is so damn awesome.

    Hear me out.

This is honestly exactly what I was looking for.

Ignoring the fact that I absolutely love this movie, I just love the way this builds up. It uses the same motive through almost the whole thing, but it keeps recontextualizing to fit different moods/moments, and the bombast and energy is so strong. Something that was sorely missing from most of these subs. I wasn’t expecting to give a 10 to a Disney song, but this is honestly such a good composition and really fit the bill.

    8) The Closer

After cruising through a strong run of tracks, everything comes to a head with the big finale. This track wraps up the tone and themes of the whole album, whether in triumph, tragedy, or something in between.

This sub needs to have some element of finality. That interpretation is up to you, whether it's a celebratory credit roll, one final all-out assault, a tragic ending, or the dismal fallout. Like with other cats, this doesn't have to be the final track of an album, but tracks that have the vibe I'm looking for usually are.

    EXAMPLES:
Alice in Chains - "Over Now" (https://youtu.be/Id3h3eRiuOs)
Immortal - "Beyond the North Waves" (https://youtu.be/8JQDONbHBsQ)
    Death - "Perennial Quest" (https://youtu.be/qcVp-ggYIEc)
Death Grips - "Artificial Death in the West" (https://youtu.be/haintp62aO0)
