Hope you all enjoyed the marathon that was running the qualification rounds as part of the main game. This was always intended as a one-off exercise, but I really enjoyed how it all shook out, both in getting to engage so many more songs this year and in significantly breaking up the status quo rolling into the round of 128. Qualifications are probably going back to being a low key in-between event next cycle, but having a small handful of people pick them is done for good; they'll be public to anyone who wants to vote.
So here we are where the game normally starts, but the contenders are pretty significantly different from what the game's used to. A lot of tracks that had always gotten a free pass to this stage were given the opportunity to lose, and plenty of them did! Coming into this year, the list of songs that made it this far all nine times stood at 39, meaning almost a third of the roster never changed. Out of that list, we are bidding an early goodbye to, in reverse order from all time ranking:
Rabanastre Downtown, The Nightmare Begins, Wild West, Chateau d'Oraguille, Airship, One-Winged Angel, The Decisive Battle, Find Your Way, The Place I'll Return To Someday, Freya's Theme, and Still More Fighting.
I mean sure, I love a lot of those songs, and if I only had one opportunity in my life to rank everything they would certainly make my top 128, but we do this every year. Chopping down the list of permanent fixtures by 11 to only 28 leaves room for 100 less frequent players in the field. What's more, the record for new entries in a single year previously stood at 12. This year, a whopping 34 songs are appearing in the round of 128 for the very first time, bringing the all time total participants up to 240.
Another 27 tracks that missed the cut last year are back in the mix, meaning 61 songs, almost half of the field, are new. I can definitely feel it in the match-ups, and I'm really excited to see how it shakes out. A few old standards look set to go as deep as usual, but we're virtually guaranteed to see some new blood reach the higher stages.
I am pleased to say that every title will be represented this round. FF13 had an absurdly poor performance, but Saber's Edge managed to solo carry the torch on a tie break. Crystal Chronicles was at pretty high risk for having only three songs in the mix, but Annual Festival made it through on another tie break. FF3 and Tactics had rough goes, only advancing two and three songs respectively. FF12 had its worst showing to date but still managed to push six songs through. FFMQ debuted strong, with four out of six entries advancing. FF1 and 2 did quite well, all things considered, and will have five songs represented between them. There have been previous years where I felt compelled to pity vote just to get them in the mix at all.
The biggest splash of the year is FF14. Yes, it was given the largest pool to start from, but that's reasonable considering it once held the Guinness World Record for most original pieces of music in a video game. It's a testament to their quality that very few flopped. A whopping 23 songs will be representing the game... roughly three for every 100 hours it takes to beat the main story line.
Is this the year of the ballads? I don't know. I've never been keen on them myself, but all of Aria di Mezzo Carattere, Eyes On Me, and Melodies of Life won their match-ups, the latter two as underdogs. Only Suiteki da ne dropped out, in a close 4-5 loss to Beauty's Wicked Wiles, a fellow vocal-driven track.
Upsets? Upsets! I always make these sound like a big deal, but there's really no prior precedent for what happened this year. Because of the seeding, there were far fewer even matches. But that didn't stop people from voting the underdogs, resulting in by far the most statistically huge upsets this game has ever seen. Where to even begin?
After making the round of 16 in its debut, Caius' Theme fell to 186th-ranked Eternal Harvest.
86th-ranked Blinded by Light was a relative newcomer to the game but rose up the ranks fast, performing decently every year before getting dunked this year by 174th-ranked Mystic Mysidia
The stretch of songs from 30th to 40th all time was absolutely massacred:
38th-ranked The Phon Coast fell to 137th-ranked Gold Saucer
37th-ranked Besaid Island fell to 139th-ranked Matoya's Cavern
35th-ranked Succession of Witches fell to 191st-ranked Desert Moon Defied, a song that had never even reached the round of 128 since qualifiers were introduced in 2016
34th-ranked Chateau d'Oraguille fell to 144th-ranked Daughter of the Great Summoner
32nd-ranked Airship fell to 150th-ranked Main Theme (FF2)
30th-ranked On Windy Meadows fell to 194th-ranked Diner Car, another one and done entry that has been in the mix since 2017 but only made a single appearance in the main game
26th-ranked One-Winged Angel? One of the most iconic boss tunes of all time? Gone to 153rd-ranked Assault
21st-ranked The Decisive Battle, previously reaching as high as 3rd all time? Gone to 160th-ranked Reel Rumble
18th-ranked The Place I'll Return to Someday? Gone to 162nd-ranked Melodies of Life, and it wasn't close.
Past champions were not safe. 8th-ranked Freya's Theme said goodbye at the hands of 183rd-ranked Urban Chrome
19th-ranked Find Your Way could have set the record for biggest upset by the numbers in the history of this game, failing to qualify due to 198th-ranked Battle Scene (FF2)
But that was not to be, thanks to FF1's Battle Scene, ranked 200th out of 206 all time. It eliminated 3rd-ranked Still More Fighting with a vote to spare.
This is probably already weirder than the year Vamo Alla Flamenco and Ronfaure met in the final.
Round 2A
Cid's Theme (FF7, 46) vs Clash on the Big Bridge (FF5, 179) - Clash had it's moment last year, and I love Cid's Theme, but don't think I can make the leap here.
Force Your Way (FF8, 28) vs Trisection (FFT, 54) - Tough draw, but I've always loved this boss theme
Westward Tide (FF14, new entry) vs The Sanctuary of Zi'Tah (FF11, 18)
Locke's Theme (FF6, new entry) vs Main Theme (FF4, 176)
Home Beyond the Horizon (FF14, new entry) vs Eternal Harvest (FF9, 5) - The Radio Song is neat but not enough in isolation for me
The Prelude of Empty Skies (FF5, 12) vs Daughter of the Great Summoner (FF10, 20) - Oof, this is tough. Not sure how both of these have done so bad(probably bad seeds), but unfortunately one must continue the trend.
Shattered (FF14, new entry) vs Liberi Fatali (FF8, 237) - Why not?
Kuja's Theme (FF9, 36) vs Devil's Lab (FF6, 102) - Kuja's theme really doesn't do a lot for me outside of the context. Whereas Devil's Lab always reminds me why I love it both sonically and contextually.
Round 2A
Cid's Theme (FF7, 46) vs Clash on the Big Bridge (FF5, 179) Force Your Way (FF8, 28) vs Trisection (FFT, 54) - tough call here Westward Tide (FF14, new entry) vs The Sanctuary of Zi'Tah (FF11, 18) - this would have been another tough choice, but I have to give it to Westward Tide for 1:40.
Locke's Theme (FF6, new entry) vs Main Theme (FF4, 176)
Home Beyond the Horizon (FF14, new entry) vs Eternal Harvest (FF9, 5) The Prelude of Empty Skies (FF5, 12) vs Daughter of the Great Summoner (FF10, 20)
Shattered (FF14, new entry) vs Liberi Fatali (FF8, 237)
Kuja's Theme (FF9, 36) vs Devil's Lab (FF6, 102)
Cid's Theme (FF7, 46) vs Clash on the Big Bridge (FF5, 179) ~~ I... hmm... I've been feeling FF7 nostalgia through the first round for sure and Clash just won last year. I kinda want to do it until I put Clash back on and the choice feels obvious again. Plenty of rounds left to betray it later on. Would I flip this vote if it was decisive? Maybe.
Force Your Way (FF8, 28) vs Trisection (FFT, 54) ~~ Force Your Way has never been my cup of tea, and I love the Tactics battle tracks. Easy choice.
Westward Tide (FF14, new entry) vs The Sanctuary of Zi'Tah (FF11, 18) ~~ Both of these songs found their way into the mix after I stumbled into their respective zones in-game and was captivated by the sound. This is a really tough call. As the one human being on this earth who actually found the Ruby Sea enchanting and a big fan of nautical themes in general, gotta roll with Westward Tide here. I'll be happy to see either advance though.
Locke's Theme (FF6, new entry) vs Main Theme (FF4, 176) ~~ Main Theme, on the other hand, I never have to betray because it didn't actually win either of its appearances in the final!
Home Beyond the Horizon (FF14, new entry) vs Eternal Harvest (FF9, 5) ~~ I love what Home Beyond the Horizon accomplishes in game for setting such a distinct and appropriate tone for the scene, but taking in isolation it's not really all that distinct from any other trip hop tune. Eternal Harvest is really imaginative, and I feel like it's only not gone far in the past because it's brief.
The Prelude of Empty Skies (FF5, 12) vs Daughter of the Great Summoner (FF10, 20) ~~ FF14 Omega raids gave me a late-blossoming love for Prelude of Empty Skies that I'm not willing to let go of just yet.
Shattered (FF14, new entry) vs Liberi Fatali (FF8, 237) ~~ Let's goooooooooo
Kuja's Theme (FF9, 36) vs Devil's Lab (FF6, 102) ~~ Kuja's Theme is nice but I have no deep love for it. Devil's Lab is a classic.
Round 2A
Cid's Theme (FF7, 46) vs Clash on the Big Bridge (FF5, 179)
Force Your Way (FF8, 28) vs Trisection (FFT, 54)
Westward Tide (FF14, new entry) vs The Sanctuary of Zi'Tah (FF11, 18) Locke's Theme (FF6, new entry) vs Main Theme (FF4, 176)
Home Beyond the Horizon (FF14, new entry) vs Eternal Harvest (FF9, 5)
The Prelude of Empty Skies (FF5, 12) vs Daughter of the Great Summoner (FF10, 20)
Shattered (FF14, new entry) vs Liberi Fatali (FF8, 237)
Kuja's Theme (FF9, 36) vs Devil's Lab (FF6, 102)
Wisp: how are u a god and unable to read at the same time
PunchyTheCat: WHAT TEH ACTUAL $%#!ING WHAT THE ACTUAL WHAT WHO LET THIS HAPPEN WHY WISDOM WAS SOOOO TOWNY WTF

Locke's Theme (FF6, new entry) vs Main Theme (FF4, 176) Home Beyond the Horizon (FF14, new entry) vs Eternal Harvest (FF9, 5)

Round 2B
Relm's Theme (FF6, new entry) vs The Man with the Machine Gun (FF8, 69)
Troops March On (FF6, 31) vs The Mines of Narshe (FF6, 84) Slam Shuffle (FF6, 63) vs Stand Your Ground (FF15, 67) Perfumed Eves (FF14, new entry) vs Reel Rumble (FF15, 16)
Imagination (FF14, new entry) vs Birth of the God (FF7, 192) Despair (FF11, 35) vs Phantom Train (FF6, 86) The Pioneers (FF11, new entry) vs The Dreadful Fight (FF4, 112) You're Not Alone! (FF9, 71) vs Aerith's Theme (FF7, 128)
Round 2A
Cid's Theme (FF7, 46) vs Clash on the Big Bridge (FF5, 179) Force Your Way (FF8, 28) vs Trisection (FFT, 54)
Westward Tide (FF14, new entry) vs The Sanctuary of Zi'Tah (FF11, 18) Locke's Theme (FF6, new entry) vs Main Theme (FF4, 176)
Home Beyond the Horizon (FF14, new entry) vs Eternal Harvest (FF9, 5) - I like both, I am just curious if when I get to HBtH ingame there will be a lalafell in the corner swaying back and forth to provide the experience I am expecting. The Prelude of Empty Skies (FF5, 12) vs Daughter of the Great Summoner (FF10, 20)
Shattered (FF14, new entry) vs Liberi Fatali (FF8, 237) Kuja's Theme (FF9, 36) vs Devil's Lab (FF6, 102) I like both so I am voting for the underdog
Round 2B Relm's Theme (FF6, new entry) vs The Man with the Machine Gun (FF8, 69) Troops March On (FF6, 31) vs The Mines of Narshe (FF6, 84)
Slam Shuffle (FF6, 63) vs Stand Your Ground (FF15, 67) Perfumed Eves (FF14, new entry) vs Reel Rumble (FF15, 16) I gave myself a mini spoiler opening Perfumed Eves, but I don't care, it's so good
Imagination (FF14, new entry) vs Birth of the God (FF7, 192)
Despair (FF11, 35) vs Phantom Train (FF6, 86) - I am fine with either passing, could switch. The Pioneers (FF11, new entry) vs The Dreadful Fight (FF4, 112)
You're Not Alone! (FF9, 71) vs Aerith's Theme (FF7, 128)
Round 2B
Relm's Theme (FF6, new entry) vs The Man with the Machine Gun (FF8, 69) -I just love this track too much, even though Relm's theme is gorgeous
Troops March On (FF6, 31) vs The Mines of Narshe (FF6, 84) Slam Shuffle (FF6, 63) vs Stand Your Ground (FF15, 67)
Perfumed Eves (FF14, new entry) vs Reel Rumble (FF15, 16)
Imagination (FF14, new entry) vs Birth of the God (FF7, 192) - I can't, sorry
Despair (FF11, 35) vs Phantom Train (FF6, 86) The Pioneers (FF11, new entry) vs The Dreadful Fight (FF4, 112) - $%#! it, let's get nuts
You're Not Alone! (FF9, 71) vs Aerith's Theme (FF7, 128)
I'm posting in a new format now so my comments can be seen.
Round 2A Clash on the Big Bridge (FF5) - This took several re-plays and I had to come back to it after a few days. Sorry Cid the VIth. Force Your Way (FF8) The Sanctuary of Zi'Tah (FF11) Locke's Theme (FF6) - tough call, but I love FF6. Eternal Harvest (FF9) Daughter of the Great Summoner (FF10) Liberi Fatali (FF8) Kuja's Theme (FF9) - I'm surprised I'm doing this.
Relm's Theme (FF6, new entry) vs The Man with the Machine Gun (FF8, 69) ~~ I... really don't care much for The Man with the Machine Gun tbh. Maybe if Tim Follin has written it and ten years sooner. Relm's Theme is great but I feel like I would vote almost any alternative here.
Troops March On (FF6, 31) vs The Mines of Narshe (FF6, 84) ~~ I came into this feeling like it would be an easy opportunity to vote the underdog, but I love Mines of Narshe too much
Slam Shuffle (FF6, 63) vs Stand Your Ground (FF15, 67) ~~ I'm not deeply in love with either of these but the Shimomura feels a lot more fresh to me, probably because I've heard Slam Shuffle for literally hours over the years.
Perfumed Eves (FF14, new entry) vs Reel Rumble (FF15, 16) ~~ Brutal match-up. Reel Rumble's in my top four tracks out of the 16 options here, but Perfumed Eves is in my top one.
Imagination (FF14, new entry) vs Birth of the God (FF7, 192) ~~ Speaking of top four in this group, here are two and three. Ugh... Wasn't sure where I would end up, but it's close enough that I'm taking the underdog.
Despair (FF11, 35) vs Phantom Train (FF6, 86) ~~ Phantom Train is super nostalgic and I wish it the best of luck but Despair is such a hidden gem. Every year I put it on forgetting where it will go and am left so satisfied by the progression.
The Pioneers (FF11, new entry) vs The Dreadful Fight (FF4, 112) ~~ Ok The Pioneers is absolutely delightful. Never heard it before putting together this year's game but I'm smitten.
You're Not Alone! (FF9, 71) vs Aerith's Theme (FF7, 128) ~~ The most nostalgic thing about Aerith is her dying. Let's relive that experience together.
Dungeons and Waterfalls (FFMQ, new entry) vs Crimson Sunrise (FF14, 40) ~~ Nope nope nope sorry second favorite FFMQ track you lose. ...But I won't hate it if you don't. 2C is one of the strongest brackets imo.
Eruyt Village (FF12, 46) vs Red Wings (FF4, 71) ~~ ugh ugh ugh Red Wings is basically the first song I ever heard in a JRPG I thought I would let my pure unadulterated love for FF12 music shine but I cannot do this
Terra (FF9, new entry) vs Nobility Obliges (FF14, 38) ~~ I wanted to love you Terra why did you have to rand this pairing. .... Oh dear there is a real possibility of a Crimson Sunrise vs Nobility Obliges match-up down the road.
Beauty's Wicked Wiles (FF14, new entry) vs Bombing Mission (FF7, 152) ~~ I don't think Lakshmi's Theme is ever winning this but it's a game-changing moment in FF14 progressing from a game I enjoyed to a game I was fully bedazzled by. Bombing Mission is merely fantastic. ... Typed that before I actually clicked Bombing Mission and I almost feel silly but I'm sticking to my vote lol. These are both great.
Battle 3 (FFMQ, new entry) vs Steel Reason (FF14, 65) ~~ I let my FF12 love affair fool me into thinking Battle 3 would not get this far in the first place but unfortunately I also have a love affair with Steel Reason too. There is a world where I vote for it if it survives this round haha, really do enjoy it tremendously. ....... Really it's quite amazing how awesome Steel Reason sounds despite appearing in the single most tedious feature of the entire game. It might be the only thing that makes that roulette bearable.
Tower of Bab-il (FF4, 19) vs Gold Saucer (FF7, 24) ~~ I voted against Gold Saucer last round because it randed The Phon Coast my beloved but I am a confirmed Gold Saucer theme adorer and let's $%#!ing go. Break my heart by facing Steel Reason next round please.
Gangos (FF14, new entry) vs The Extreme (FF8, 158) ~~ The Extreme is one of those many FF8 songs that I enjoy at exactly average...maybe in this case somewhat higher...which makes it stronger than half the field for me but always eats at me when it goes deeper than I want it to. Cool tune, might vote it next round over either option if it survives, but Gangos is so subtly intense and delicous umffff...
Assault (FF10, 18) vs Prelude (FF4, 76) ~~ Assault beating One-Winged Angel in the qualifiers might be the single most legitimate wtf thing that has happened in this game from my pov...I mean at least Still More Fighting and Freya's Theme have won before...but it bought itself an easier challenge this go around and I'm down to see that through. Prelude was a rad theme on the NES and SNES but modern composers haven't manged to keep it fresh imo.
Dungeons and Waterfalls (FFMQ, new entry) vs Crimson Sunrise (FF14, 40) Eruyt Village (FF12, 46) vs Red Wings (FF4, 71)
Terra (FF9, new entry) vs Nobility Obliges (FF14, 38) Beauty's Wicked Wiles (FF14, new entry) vs Bombing Mission (FF7, 152)
Battle 3 (FFMQ, new entry) vs Steel Reason (FF14, 65) Tower of Bab-il (FF4, 19) vs Gold Saucer (FF7, 24)
Gangos (FF14, new entry) vs The Extreme (FF8, 158)
Assault (FF10, 18) vs Prelude (FF4, 76)
Relm's Theme (FF6, new entry) vs The Man with the Machine Gun (FF8, 69) --- Machine gun is one of my ff8 favs tho
Troops March On (FF6, 31) vs The Mines of Narshe (FF6, 84) --- Two very memorable tunes from the game, but if I have to choose I'd say Mines is a bit to unimpactful, mostly due to how it's not associated to a scenario except when you're running away in the beginning!
Slam Shuffle (FF6, 63) vs Stand Your Ground (FF15, 67) --- Ergh, my second favorite city tune in the whole series (after Cosmo Canyon) vs what's probably my favorite FF15 tune. Drat! While Slam Shuffle is associated with a certain point in the game, which Stand Your Ground isn't as I recall it, it's still a really boring city... Stand your ground it is!
Perfumed Eves (FF14, new entry) vs Reel Rumble (FF15, 16) --- A city tune I haven't gotten to vs a song I don't even know the context of... Hard for the wrong reasons. I guess I prefer the city one?
Imagination (FF14, new entry) vs Birth of the God (FF7, 192) --- Imagination really nails the vibe of ff14, while I think Birth of the God is a really messy boss tune.
Despair (FF11, 35) vs Phantom Train (FF6, 86) --- I don't know the context of Despair, but while it gets the vibe right I think it's a bit too monotone. Phantom Train is another memorable classic! R.i.p. Cyan's family, that train deserved to get suplexed!
The Pioneers (FF11, new entry) vs The Dreadful Fight (FF4, 112) --- Both good, but I guess I'm a sucker for fight tunes in this one
You're Not Alone! (FF9, 71) vs Aerith's Theme (FF7, 128) --- Pfft I don't care if it won already, and if Aerith is gold, I just love this tune!
Wisp: how are u a god and unable to read at the same time
PunchyTheCat: WHAT TEH ACTUAL $%#!ING WHAT THE ACTUAL WHAT WHO LET THIS HAPPEN WHY WISDOM WAS SOOOO TOWNY WTF
Round 2B
Relm's Theme (FF6, new entry) vs The Man with the Machine Gun (FF8, 69) Troops March On (FF6, 31) vs The Mines of Narshe (FF6, 84)
Slam Shuffle (FF6, 63) vs Stand Your Ground (FF15, 67) Perfumed Eves (FF14, new entry) vs Reel Rumble (FF15, 16)
Imagination (FF14, new entry) vs Birth of the God (FF7, 192) Despair (FF11, 35) vs Phantom Train (FF6, 86)
The Pioneers (FF11, new entry) vs The Dreadful Fight (FF4, 112) You're Not Alone! (FF9, 71) vs Aerith's Theme (FF7, 128)

Dungeons and Waterfalls (FFMQ, new entry) vs Crimson Sunrise (FF14, 40)
Eruyt Village (FF12, 46) vs Red Wings (FF4, 71)
Terra (FF9, new entry) vs Nobility Obliges (FF14, 38)
Beauty's Wicked Wiles (FF14, new entry) vs Bombing Mission (FF7, 152)
Battle 3 (FFMQ, new entry) vs Steel Reason (FF14, 65) Tower of Bab-il (FF4, 19) vs Gold Saucer (FF7, 24) Gangos (FF14, new entry) vs The Extreme (FF8, 158)
Assault (FF10, 18) vs Prelude (FF4, 76)
Dungeons and Waterfalls (FFMQ, new entry) vs Crimson Sunrise (FF14, 40) - This is probably just down to taste preference and in the moment feelings, but the vibe of Dungeons and Waterfalls is engrossing
Eruyt Village (FF12, 46) vs Red Wings (FF4, 71) - This was a tough call and I could go either way, but not only does Red Wings sound great, but I love the context of the melody here and how it's repurposed to fit the narrative throughout the game.
Terra (FF9, new entry) vs Nobility Obliges (FF14, 38)
Beauty's Wicked Wiles (FF14, new entry) vs Bombing Mission (FF7, 152)
Battle 3 (FFMQ, new entry) vs Steel Reason (FF14, 65) Battle 3 is so damn good, but Steel Reason has such a larger atmosphere
Tower of Bab-il (FF4, 19) vs Gold Saucer (FF7, 24) - I gotta support this tune. It just makes me want to go to an actual Gold Saucer
Gangos (FF14, new entry) vs The Extreme (FF8, 158) Assault (FF10, 18) vs Prelude (FF4, 76) - Prelude is lovely, but I'm keeping my flag planted behind Assault for now
Round 2A
Cid's Theme (FF7, 46) vs Clash on the Big Bridge (FF5, 179) Force Your Way (FF8, 28) vs Trisection (FFT, 54)
Westward Tide (FF14, new entry) vs The Sanctuary of Zi'Tah (FF11, 18)
Locke's Theme (FF6, new entry) vs Main Theme (FF4, 176) Home Beyond the Horizon (FF14, new entry) vs Eternal Harvest (FF9, 5) The Prelude of Empty Skies (FF5, 12) vs Daughter of the Great Summoner (FF10, 20)
Shattered (FF14, new entry) vs Liberi Fatali (FF8, 237) Kuja's Theme (FF9, 36) vs Devil's Lab (FF6, 102)
Round 2B The Man with the Machine Gun (FF8) - Another really tough call on the first match up. Went back and forth too long on this. The Mines of Narshe (FF6) Slam Shuffle (FF6) Reel Rumble (FF15) Birth of the God (FF7) Phantom Train (FF6) The Dreadful Fight (FF4) - Sorry Pioneers. You've been Dreadful'd! Aerith's Theme (FF7) - still gets me in the black heart.
Round 2B Relm's Theme (FF6, new entry) vs The Man with the Machine Gun (FF8, 69)
Troops March On (FF6, 31) vs The Mines of Narshe (FF6, 84) Slam Shuffle (FF6, 63) vs Stand Your Ground (FF15, 67)
Perfumed Eves (FF14, new entry) vs Reel Rumble (FF15, 16)
Imagination (FF14, new entry) vs Birth of the God (FF7, 192) Despair (FF11, 35) vs Phantom Train (FF6, 86) The Pioneers (FF11, new entry) vs The Dreadful Fight (FF4, 112)
You're Not Alone! (FF9, 71) vs Aerith's Theme (FF7, 128) - this ff9 one is awesome though

Round 2D
Battle Scene (FF1, 2) vs Aria di Mezzo Carattere (FF6, 47)
Cursed Earth (FF5, 26) vs Selbina (FF11, 44) Autumn Footfalls (FF11, new entry) vs Mystic Mysidia (FF4, 11) The Skycity of Bhujerba (FF12, 66) vs Vamo Alla Flamenco (FF9, 146) - I like both of these
Wizardly (FF14, new entry) vs Desert Moon Defied (FF14, 4)
The Royal City of Rabanastre (FF12, 34) vs Last Dungeon (FF6, 87)
Judgement Day (FF7, new entry) vs Eternal Wind (FF3, 152) With Hearts Aligned (FF14, new entry) vs Fight 2 (FF4, 122) - Again, I like them both, but I'm favouring the new track over the established classic.
Round 2D Battle Scene (FF1, 2) vs Aria di Mezzo Carattere (FF6, 47) - I'm normally not the kind of person that has this problem, but I think I genuinely played FF6 too late to be enamored with the Aria scene, and the song on it's own doesn't do much for me. Meanwhile, Battle Scene is iconic.
Cursed Earth (FF5, 26) vs Selbina (FF11, 44) - Cursed Earth is a really underrated track IMO, especially with its ranking here. Selbina is nice, but the vibe and memories attached to Cursed Earth are too strong.
Autumn Footfalls (FF11, new entry) vs Mystic Mysidia (FF4, 11) - I love the context of Mysidia and it's a really fun tune, but even without context, Autumn Footfalls hits me a bit harder
The Skycity of Bhujerba (FF12, 66) vs Vamo Alla Flamenco (FF9, 146) Wizardly (FF14, new entry) vs Desert Moon Defied (FF14, 4) - pretty close call, but the retro vibes grab me more here
The Royal City of Rabanastre (FF12, 34) vs Last Dungeon (FF6, 87) - This is a really tough one, but I sometimes forget how much of an orchestral masterpiece the Rabanastre theme is
Judgement Day (FF7, new entry) vs Eternal Wind (FF3, 152) - I won't be upset if Judgment Day goes through, especially since Eternal already won, but a lot of you already know my dedication to Eternal Wind.
With Hearts Aligned (FF14, new entry) vs Fight 2 (FF4, 122) - Could go either way but With Hearts Aligned feels like it's missing a little something to edge out Fight 2.

Round 2E
Kazham (FF11, new entry) vs Dancing Mad (FF6, 231) Cloud of Darkness (FF3, 29) vs New Continent (FF6, 65)
Challenge (FF10, 19) vs Prologue (FF4, 65) - Sigh, I like both of these, but as of right now, this is the one I'm more in the mood for.
Song of Salt and Suffering (FF14, new entry) vs Opening Theme (FF6, 157)
Doom Castle (FFMQ, new entry) vs High Treason (FF14, 51)
The Dark Which Illuminates the World (FF14, 16) vs Seeking Power (FF12, 90)
The Fight is On! (FF15, new entry) vs Dark Messenger (FF9, 180) Quina's Theme (FF9, new entry) vs Main Theme (FF2, 18)
Round 2E
Kazham (FF11, new entry) vs Dancing Mad (FF6, 231) Cloud of Darkness (FF3, 29) vs New Continent (FF6, 65) - I'm gonna show love to Cloud of Darkness. It really is such a nice build up track, and I love the chills it sends when you are in the cave approaching the final encounter. The boss anthem part is appropriately parts inspiring and terrifying. The tremolo/arpeggio effect is awesome, too. Won't be too upset if New Continent wins, though.
Challenge (FF10, 19) vs Prologue (FF4, 65) - The novelty of the first 16-bit Main Theme is lovely and helped push it over for me in the qualifiers. But I'm more here for the vibe of Challenge right now. For as stripped down as it is, it's really engaging, both in terms of build and effect
Song of Salt and Suffering (FF14, new entry) vs Opening Theme (FF6, 157) - Same thoughts as before. I did almost vote Opening Theme over this, but I think the other one is just too epic.
Doom Castle (FFMQ, new entry) vs High Treason (FF14, 51) - Doom Castle is just too cool
The Dark Which Illuminates the World (FF14, 16) vs Seeking Power (FF12, 90)
The Fight is On! (FF15, new entry) vs Dark Messenger (FF9, 180) - The Fight is On! Is good but doesn't compare in originality
Quina's Theme (FF9, new entry) vs Main Theme (FF2, 18) - Main Theme is honestly one of the best melodies in all Final Fantasy tunes, but it's too repetitive in comparison. Especially because for as goofy as some of the tone is as well as the goofiness of the character, Quina's theme is one hell of a piece of music.
Dungeons and Waterfalls (FFMQ, new entry) vs Crimson Sunrise (FF14, 40)
Eruyt Village (FF12, 46) vs Red Wings (FF4, 71)
Terra (FF9, new entry) vs Nobility Obliges (FF14, 38) - I like these both almost equally.
Beauty's Wicked Wiles (FF14, new entry) vs Bombing Mission (FF7, 152) Battle 3 (FFMQ, new entry) vs Steel Reason (FF14, 65)
Tower of Bab-il (FF4, 19) vs Gold Saucer (FF7, 24) - not a big fan of either. but I heard the first little bit of tower of bab-il a billion times on account of the song restarting after each and every battle for some reason
Gangos (FF14, new entry) vs The Extreme (FF8, 158)
Assault (FF10, 18) vs Prelude (FF4, 76)

I was transported to a different world listening to this music. I'm voting the 9 tracks cause they are so classy. would love to see a ff9 remake, even if not, we have a beloved rpg to admire again
