This game, despite the wild last day I thought went pretty well. I talked about it a bit in discord, but I know I had I think 1/2 newer mafia players against a really stacked town team. I actually thought about rerolling for the briefest of seconds, but I care a lot about Game Integrity even more than balance. If I had an imbalanced game, you can say I was fair and just $%#!ed up. If I don't have good Game Integrity, people can't join trusting I am doing a fair rand, or might favor a friend over someone I don't know. Few things specifically I wanted to mention
1). Stone Balance I thought was so much better than last time
My initial thoughts on going 3-3 to take mass claiming day 1 off the table was "well shoot, if mafia are good, this might turn into a mountainous really quick, unless a loot pinata of a mafia member is popped." Time stone obviously was nerfed from last time due to being able to continuously protect the same person. And I added an additional ability to the Soul and Space stone so that they had an ability the mafia might actually use (Space and Soul og abilities are a lot stronger in town hands).
2). Mafia needs to be fun to be a team
I know there are people like Rem that like rolling wolf, and some don't mind it. I tend to prefer wolf, but don't like doing large number of wolf rands in a row. I try to create a balanced game, but even if a game is more town leaning, I want to make sure the wolves have a chance something cool to do. Here, they got some stone powers that were nice, and a lot of information based on which stones they had, they knew which ones to watch out for. I think that leads to a lot of cool mechanics for setting themselves for success if they can hide in the town.
3). In the end, there will probably always be something missed that makes it hard to lie
Obviously, the elephant in the room from the mafia perspective was that it wasn't clear from the OP that failed abilities would not cause the stone to pass on use. Manetric knew this because he had failed to vig N3 I think when he was time stoned. I think in an open setup with mechanics, I think its important to be clear how mechanics everyone knows exist interact with each other. For instance, a player needs to know if they were redirected or not. The mafia didn't have any abilities fail, so it is unclear that they knew how to fake it. Now from an end result scenario, I don't think it mattered in the grand scheme of things since even if the deception worked, Lukeh flipping town immediately outs Bystander as a liar. But it could have made for a closer game, and even perhaps a mafia win if wiggles fired and was redirected (but even that was a 50-50 and ONLY if wiggles didn't holster).
In the end, I was very happy with how the balanced worked. The fact that one more mishang could have been a mafia victory made this a nailbiter towards the end when by day 2, it looked like it was going to be a town stomp. I hope all of you had fun and I would love if any of you joined another game Ill do after Hydra season. Or if you need a player for a game you want to host, ping me if you need some people.
Gg to everyone!
