    1 v 1 Mafia Tournament Sign-Ups

    1 v 1 Mafia Tournament Sign-Ups

From the very successful run of the Team Captain 1 v 1's Game earlier this year, I have decided to create a larger tournament structure to allow players to play as a contestant or judge. The game is essentially an f3 simulation with 2 players battling it out. One rands town and the other rands mafia. The third player is a judge AKA (the clear) and they have to figure out who is the mafia between the 2. If the judge correctly votes the mafia, they win the game; and if they vote out the town, they lose the game. Whoever does not get voted out in the battle between the 2 players (contestants), wins the game.

I will discuss each aspect of the tournament throughout this document and break it down. For a brief overview, there will be a pre-sign up phase where players display interest and participate as a contestant or judge. Then the contestants who want to participate in the 1 v 1 are sorted out through tiers through surveys from the participating players. After the establishment of the tiers, these players will be drawn into groups and compete in the round robin portion of the tournament. Judges will also be drawn to their groups. The top 2 contestants from each group will advance to the knockout stage after the round robin, and the best judge from each group will advance to the knockout stage. In the knockout stage, each game will be a single elimination game with the winner moving up each time. The Judges will also advance based on their records in comparison to the other judges in each phase of the knockout stage. At the end, it will be the finale between the last 2 standing contestants and the "best" judge. The contestant who wins the finale wins the 1 v 1 Mafia Tournament. If the judge in the finale guesses correctly, they will also win the 1 v 1 Mafia Tournament from the Judge's category. And if the judge guesses incorrectly in the finale, they will be "second place" in the Judge's category in the tournament.

Additionally, throughout this tournament, I plan for there to be podcasts and large player chats to promote a fun discussion and an environment where everyone feels welcomed. There will be some livestreams for the drawing of the group stage portion of the tournament as well as some pre-game discussion on some of the player's/matches. And anyone is welcomed to spectate and watch the tournament if they do not want to play!

Lastly, all participants and winners throughout the tournament will get an award/trophy specific to this tournament that they get to display on their MU profile!!

As far as the scheduling goes, the plan for this tournament is to begin after Hydra season and begin around February and end before the beginning of Champs Season. The expectation is that this tournament will be 1.5 to 2.5 months long depending on the number of players that demonstrate interest/want to play.

For each individual game (1 v 1) it will range from 12-24 hours. These will mainly be short games and flexible according to people's preferred hours to play. Once the groups are drawn and matchups are defined, players will schedule with each other for what day/time works so they can play their matchups.

For the tournament size, the expectation is that for every judge, there will be 2 contestants. That means, the number of contestants participating will be twice the size of the number of judges in the tournament.

For this tournament and based off the previous interest, the size will be 24 players, but can expand depending on if more people want to sign up! For the 24 players, 16 will be the constants (1 v 1 duelers) and 8 will be the judges.

Before the tournament starts, there will be a survey for all the contestants to rate all the rest of the contestants in orders. Based on the total collective orders of all the contestants, players will be sorted into 4 tiers (A, B, C, and D). The top 1/4 are A, the second 2/4 are B, the third 3/4 are C, and the fourth 4/4 are D. The signification of these 4 tiers is that during the drawing for the group stage, none of the contestants from the same tier will be matched up in the same group for the round robin portion of the tournament. Each group in the round robin will consist of 4 contestants and 2 judges. Each contestant in each group will contain a player from each of the 4 tiers. For the judges, they will just be drawn into each group at random and there is no survey necessary.

For the group stage portion of the tournament, each group will contain 4 contestants and 2 judges as stated before. Each player will face off in 3 matches in each of their groups. Each Judge will have 3 matchups to judge, since there are 6 total games played from each group. There will also be a drawing for which matchups the judges will participate in within their group. After the matchups for the round robin are complete, the top 2 contestants and the top judge with the best record(s) from each group will advance to the knockout stage.

If there is a tie between 2 contestants in a group, the contestant that won the 1 v 1 in their group game wins the tie-breaker. If there is a 3 way tie between the contestants in a group, the first tiebreaker is the strength of victory against their opponents (player who's record of defeated opponents is the best). The second tiebreaker is the strength of the Judge's records they won with or against (best combined record of the judges they tricked as mafia or won with as town). The third tiebreaker is the town win percentage. The fourth tiebreaker is the mafia win percentage. If any of these tie-breakers break the 3 way tie and lead to a 2 way tie, then the head to head record is used to beat the 2 way tie after.

For the judges, if there is a tie in their record, the first tie-breaker is the strength of victory against their opponents (strongest combined record of contestants who were mafia that the Judge correctly voted on). The second tie-breaker is the strength of the victory of the contestants they found town (strongest combined record of contestants who were town that the Judge correctly found). If there is still a tie after the tie-breakers, a coin toss will determine who advances. (Could maybe do a 1 v 1 duel instead; however would need to find an unbiased judge to "judge" the game).

In the knockout stage, they are one game elimination where the winner in the 1 v 1 moves on and the loser is eliminated. For the judges, they advance to judge the next round if they guess the mafia correctly and the judge in the cross match* votes incorrectly. If the Judges in the cross match* both vote correctly or incorrectly, then the tie-breaker rules discussed in the section above (Round Robin) will be utilized to break the tie. Reminder that the tie breaker in the knockout stage will use games from both the round robin and the knockout stage.

Players and judges will compete in the knockout stage and move on until the finale, where the contestant who wins the 1 v 1, wins the 1 v 1 Mafia Tournament. And if the judge votes correctly, they will win the 1 v 1 Mafia Tournament in the Judge Category. If the judge votes incorrectly in the final, they will be second place in the 1 v 1 Judge Category. There will also be a third/fourth place battle in the knockout stage.

*Cross match is the other match in the knockout stage that leads to the same advancement match. For example, if player A vs B is one match and player C vs D is another match, and the winners from these games will face each other in the next match, Game A vs B is the cross match of Game C vs D and vice versa.

Thank you for reading through this all and I hope you consider participating in this 1 v 1 Mafia Tournament!! Based on player interests/sign-ups, that will determine if this occurs! I hope similar to the Championships, Hydra Season, Turbo Championships, and Mafia League, that the 1 v 1 Mafia Tournaments will become a staple tournament on Mafia Universe where players will have fun!!

Additionally, if you are interested in podcasts, discussions, tournament organizations, and any logistics/rules with the tournament, please feel free to leave your thoughts and feedback!! Any help/thoughts are appreciated!!!

And when you demonstrate interest or want to sign up, let me know if you prefer playing as a contest or judge, or if you have no preference.

The survey looks awkward tbh but it looks like judges don't have to submit one?

The survey is only for the "tiers" to ensure groups are fair when drawn.

I can keep the tiers hidden and have it incorporated when doing the draw.

I More meant having to submit a list that someone gets to look at.

I could also do a random drawing disregarding "tiers" if no one really minds how the groups could be drawn. But can discuss that as it gets closer to it.

If you do run the tournament using the surveys, I'd be very interested in seeing the overall statistics for how well people performed compared to how skilled people perceived them to be in the poll (willing to help out on that if necessary, not meaning to dump more work on you).
